Hello! Just a quick question (I searched some handbook thogroughly, but found no answer): How many lab reports do we send to the IBO per student? Is it just that I can select a few of my best or do they require all? Also, I heard something about selecting some labs for marking only a certain part of the report - e.g. I would like my Data Collection & Processing to be examined in Lab 1, but in Lab 2, I had a better Conclusion & Evaluation ... Is this so?

I'm trying my best to turn my dream into reality in biology but there are other doubts in it and questions which I need you guys to answer please!!!!! 1. We are almost done with our IA in biology and I'm quite sure I will get a solid 5 or 6 but there are some other doubt which are pulling me down like the possibility in getting 7 in paper 1,2,3? 2. Do the examiner used to repeat biology multiple choice question in paper 1 from the previous years? 3.Can any one clarify to me what topics came last year in the exams especially in paper 2 may exam ?

Hello everyone! Do you know what do the aims within the bio syllabus, such as Aim 7: Data logging can be used to measure changes in conductivity in distilled water as Na+ and K+ diffuse out of salt–agar cubes or dialysing tubing.. it actually mean? Would this mean that this could actually be the subject of the data analysis in section A of p2? Furthermore, In the question about suggest a method, is the answer reflect whether you have read around the subject or not or just you have to stick to the syllabus? Another question to ask, what do you think about starting with section b that has more marks than too start with section A,so you get the long-answer questions firs…

I am in higher level biology with a teacher that has taught for many years in IB biology but seems to be falling behind this year. She started teaching college classes on the side and it has really had an effect on our class. Everything she assigns is simply taken off of the internet, there is literally NO class notes, learning, or help from her. We do everything on a computer and if we have a clarification issue she simply says "look it up." We have taken this up with our IB coordinator and he has talked to her but that has only made her become more strict on due dates and homework and not changed her teaching style. We don't have another teacher that can fill her spot s…

Hey guys, I'm looking to do an Extended Essay in Biology, focused on Option E: Neurobiology and Behaviour, as I'm looking into entering a Neuroscience program for University. I was wondering if anyone here has any ideas on what type of experiment I could do or anything like that. Thanks!

Is it a bad thing that I didn't run my trial 5 times? Or could that just get put in evaluation... my teacher approved a plan in which i measured my data every 30 minutes for 2.5 hours, not one in which i did the same thing 5 times, if that made any sense. My teacher is of no help. She gave us a poor copy of the rubric and an even more poor copy of a sample lab report.

Hello people-i have an important question about my lab report about germination period of "Cucurbita pepo"(zucchini). I am experimenting the effect of adding organic acid(vinegar) to it and some has not germinated since i started(14 days) and i need to write its report. Should i take 14 days of germination period for the ones that didnt germinate(because i need to calculate an average day of germination, deviation, variance etc., with the explanation why i did write 14) or should i take them as 0 because they had not germinated at all?-Thank for your help

Hello. I was just wondering how long your biology IA labs were, including title page, appendices, works cited? How many pages in total would be reasonable? More specifically, how long of a conclusion is long enough to cover everything? I think I could be able to go on and on for 10 pages of conclusion (excluding evaluation), but I think that's obviously not what IB wants? (Even though this is internally assessed...) An unrelated question: can there be some handwritten parts? Such as the labelling of hand-drawn diagrams? Thanks.

Hi Okay, so in Biology we're doing our final IA and it's meant to be on food enzymes. I've researched a lot on different enzymes and I've come up with 2 that I could possibly research but I'm not sure how. I'm really confused. I found Papain, which is an enzyme found in Papaya which breaks down proteins in the stomach and another one is Pectinase, which is usually found in fruits (specifically Apples) but I don't understand how I'm going to test them and on what? Help please?

Okay, so we're doing a lab on how certain factors affect enzyme activity. We were told to do either ph, substrate concentration or temperature and we can pick one of these four enzymes: diastase, lipase, pepsin or pancreatin. Also, we need to measure the results quantitatively. I need help! i have no clue what to do! I was going to use pepsin, temperature and egg whites (boiled) and see how long it took to dissolve and use the mass for my results but apparently dissolving the egg could take 12 hours and i don't have that kind of time. Does anyone know a simpler, faster experiment??? (oh and we're also allowed to use other enzymes if we want, like the ones in pineapple j…

At the moment I'm doing a prac on how yeast respires in different sugars. Basically, all the information I am finding is contradicting each other and I am so confused. My question is, should glucose or fructose have the highest rate of respiration? I would think it would be fructose because in cell respiration glucose is turned into fructose before pyruvate, but some sources I've found say that fructose must be turned into glucose before it can be used. I really don't know what to trust and could really do with help from anyone that knows anything about this.

For all section B questions, it always says "Up to two additional marks are available for the construction of your answers." What does this mean? What exactly are they looking for in the "construction of your answers"? My teacher was incredibly ambiguous and confusing regarding this and I don't want to lose those 2 marks due to confusion.

We must find out the following about our insect: Habitat and Distribution Lifecycle Anatomy Diet Predators Classification Interesting Behaviors Impact on environment Help me please? It's hard with so little information about what we are supposed to design

I have encountered a problem with calculating the percentage error for the enthalpy change. In the reaction solid sodium carbonate was added to aqueous sulfuric acid. I already calculated percentage uncertainties for m (acid) and delta T, and added them. However, I suppose that is not the end, and I should also calculate the percentage uncertainty either for the amount (in this experiment amount of acid = amount of carbonate) or for the mass of carbonate. I don't know which one to calculate. In the textbook I have they also calculate the % uncertainty for K, however I don't think it should be included, but I might be wrong. I know how to calculate next steps, but I am stu…

Hello can anybody suggest me a good option for Biology SL? My teacher said we need to study ourself the option topics. I am not good at science, so I want to know what is the easiest option. Ive looked at options, and I think Option A (human nutrition and health) and Option B (physiology of exercise) seems to be easier than others. What did you choose for your option? thanks for reading!!

Has anyone done that lab with the agar cubes where you put them in NaOH and calculate the rate of diffusion? What type of graphs should I make? What should I be comparing? Any helpful tip/hints that would help me? Thanks!!!

Hi there As most of you know during the IB course we have to design an experiment! Now we have been told to design an experiment which demonstrates or relates to global warming. I have my concept and everything [so no I'm not asking for a topic!] however in my method I will obviously need to make it detailed. I am wondering which is the best method [for a basic lab] to obtain the following gases; Carbon dioxide, Methane, or any other suggestions you may have. This would make a big difference to my process! Thanks

As it says in the description, how many strengths and limitations/improvements are considered a good amount for a DCP/CE Lab? Also, can't we just use the controlled variables from the design as the strengths? Because they technically are the strengths. What sets controlled variables and strengths apart? THANKS IN ADVANCE!

The new vehicle needs to meet the following requirements/features listed below and be the most environmental model available. Not sure if every school's the same, but for Biology, we will learn the basic things needed to be learnt, but I guess we have 2 main topics we will be focusing on extensively? Anyways, I was wondering if anyone here had to choose like 2 topics out of around 8 or 9 to learn about. We're doing Neurobiology and Ecology, the latter only to get higher marks because the teacher said it was easier. So, anyone had to choose like one or two topics to focus on?

So for this year, my second year of HL Biology, we got a new teacher because our teacher from last year retired. Our new teacher this year does not seem to know very much in my opinion and it's difficult to learn in his class because of the fast pace and his jumbled class structure. A lot of us are pretty scared that we'll fail the exams for HL Biology. What I'm wondering is, if I basically studied and read the Heinemann Baccalaureate Study Guide intensely and thoroughly, would I be in good shape? At least pass I mean? The textbook we use right now is for Advanced Placement Biology and goes really in depth; subsequently our teacher takes the lecture powerpoints from the t…

Teacher asked us several questions that I am not sure how to answer. We were working on seeds of beans. May I relay on your help?? Discuss some of the factors that might affect the accuracy of your estimates. 2)Why is it important that the times between the first and second samples be a short time compared to the organims's life span? 3) How did …

i just wanted to clarify a few things on biological drawings and uncertainties, particularly on the latter. a couple of questions i need answered: 1) in biological drawings, must the entire field of view be drawn? or only (at most) 3-4 cells that can be seen? 2) i'm still quite confused on how to get uncertainty values. us bio kids always argued with the physics and chem kids because, for some reason, our uncertainty values would be different. can someone please give me an example? for instance, let's say we're measuring the mass or the length using (g) or (cm) as a unit of measurement. how would you come up with the uncertainty value? help would be much appreciated ^^ th…
