Lab Report Biology IA Salinities affect on Seed Germination
Simmo2108 posted a topic in Biology and ESS
I have to do a IA on the germination of seeds. I have my independent variable which is salinity. I am looking at it effect on the time it takes for a seed to germinate. I have a few questions, What is a good range of concentrations? How much of the concentration should I add? What is the best way to get my concentration? Should I add the concentration to the soil and add the salinity of the soil on top, or change the salinity of the soil to a fixed point? E.g. add 1% to soil or make the soil have 1% salinity. All help would be great! Thanks!- 6 replies

In this lab I had several problems: * Concentration of CuSO4 was 0.2 M. *No major changes in temperature. Min: 28 Max: 34 *Huge percentage error of 207.38% *We had to increase the amount of CuSO4 and Zn to be able to read the temperature because the thermometer couldn´t reach it. * We used an old polyestirene cup and a normal thermal cup's lid. *Lab instructions told me to use 25 ml of 1.0 M of CuSO4 and 6 grams of zinc, but I used 75ml of 0.2M of CuSO4 and 18 grams of zinc. *The graph I plotted with the data I got from the experiment is awful. Also, I was asked to trace a perpendicular line f

Please help me! I am supposed to design my chemistry IA, but I honestly have NO IDEA on how to even start. Chemistry is my worst subject and I have a lot of trouble in understanding it. I always try so hard on my IA's but I always end up making B's. I have to decide on one factor that affects the rate of a reaction to investigate in my design lab IA and this lab is supposed to be easily reproducible. Here's my IA guidelines: Aspect 1 includes: Formulating a focused problem/research question and identifies the relevant variables. Aspect 2: Designs a method for the effective control of the

Hello, we did an experiment of heat of neutralization. The objective is to calculate the molar heat of neutralization we are using calorimeter to determine the heat transferred and hence the heat of neutralization, DeltaH ( rxn) we have 2.00M NAOH and 2.00M HCL . and collected 25 mL of each solution. My question here is how do you calculate the above? I need a gerneal sense of idea of what to do, and it's due tomorrow. I'm keeping my cool and calm to not freak out and so far it is working here with you people. You guys are very helpful. I also want to know for the calculations part, how d

So i'm thinking about my IA Topic for bio and my teacher recommends doing something that interests me. The only thing that comes to mind is the Miller Urey experiment and the topic of Abiogenesis. I'm wondering if there is anything I can do surrounding the experiment or abiogenesis.

Hey! A quick little post to kindly ask if any of y'all could fill out this form for my data collection for my Biology IA. All you have to do is complete a small online colour vision test and then add your result. Thank you ahead of time for the help! https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfxh562qoHj7CO0XPgMwOVFrkjR1ZvDGwMublGAkQ3opAGFYw/viewform?usp=sf_link

Hello! I think you might be familiar with the Briggs-Rauscher reaction, where you mix 3 solutions and then they do oscillate between colorless-yellow-dark blue for a couple of minutes. I thought this kind of reaction would be quite useful for measuring the effects of temperature over the duration of the oscillations, because we were supposed to investigate a factor that might had an effect over kinetics. Right after you mix the solutions, they turn into a yellow color, then blue, clear, yellow, blue... So I decided to measure the time it takes for the solution to undergo the cycle blue-clear

Hello fellow IB students, I am currently writing my Biology Internal Assessment Lab-design and I am struggling to determine the controlled variables in my experiment. I am writing about the effect of different temperatures on the ripening process of Bananas. (the ripening process in Bananas is controlled by different enzymes). Now my question is what would be the controlled variables in this experiment? Thank you for your help!

Does the IA topic "To study the changes in the iodine value of edible oils such as olive oil, flax seed oil, coconut oil, canola oil and rice bran oil on subjecting the il to heating and reheating at various temperatures." make good sense. I'm trying to link iodine value to nutritional value. Would appreciate any help in putting this together. I'm confused because they now say saturated fat such as coconut oil is better for health and it has a low iodine value. They say higher the iodine value, higher the unsaturation and better for health...so a little direction would help in streamlining t

I think I have an idea of what I want to do but I reckon it is too simple, can I please have some advice- I am thinking of changing the concentration of a ligand (not too sure which one) and measure the absorption, or maybe do this with one or two other ligands. Then I will sketch a graph and use the Beer-Lambert law to determine the value of eb. Please let me know if it is bad or not, I am kind of struggling.

I was considering doing my IA about tea (because I'm obsessed with it heh). One idea that I have is measuring the effect of water temperature on the caffeine content of black tea. Considering I'd have to measure the caffeine content at different temperature intervals, and also take multiple trials, is this far too complex? And is extracting caffeine itself a complex procedure for an SL Chem IA? merci merci merci for any help Also, any other suggestions would be highly appreciated.

My IA is to titrate the bases of different medications with the methanoic acid produced by bee stings; however, I am not finding any bee sting medications that have bases as their active ingredients, so I don't know what to do. Can antacids treat bee stings? Also, will I be at a disadvantage for having such a simple topic? Thank you.

Hello, I have to conduct an experiment for my Biology IA and I was thinking it should be about Caffeine. I am a Caffeine intolerant and I would want to make some experiment of "how to reset caffeine tolerance" and to see if its possible. Perhaps I could measure my heart/ pulse rate for 3-4 days and see if there is any difference. Now I really need to now if this idea would work for the Biology IA and I would really appreciate if any of you could suggest how I should write the research question for this experiment in this case. Now first of all, can I do this if I have human consent fo

Hello people of IB Survival, I desperately need your help with brainstorming an idea for my Physics IA. I was thinking about doing an experiment on the affect of the angle made by a rooftop (which has crushed ice on it), on the range that the crushed ice covers - basically how further away it falls from the edge of the rooftop. This applies to real life since ice slipping off rooftops is an actual problem in countries that have those heavy snow fall days. But, I believe that we are meant to expand on the syllabus for the IA... and hence I think this RQ and this investigation would be to

Hey guys, so I am doing my Chemistry IA on enthalpy changes of alcohol.. and so I was like half done my experiment (collected data) when I came across an IA topic researching exactly what I am researching, like my introduction, background info are different but our methodology to carry out the experiment is the same and data processing method is the same.... I was wondering is it okay to carry on? I still have my own original data, original background information, original introduction...its just our method to carry out the experiment and the way to find out the calculations is the same.......

So I have this idea for my chemistry IA that I'm not sure of. I want to compare and contrast the effect of the different ratio between baking soda and acid vs. the amount of baking powder on the height the cake after baking. Baking powder is a mixture of baking soda and another acid that reacts when mixed with wet ingredient; it is used to make a cake "fluffy." I want to see if baking soda + acid will have the same effect as baking powder and how different amount of it will affect how much the cake rises. Possible variables: Independent- the ratio between baking soda and an ac

Hi, I'm supposed to come up with a rough proposal of the chem IA. I've thought some and as I need to connect this to myself, I tried to something Korean. So I thought of measuring Vitamin C content in kimchi and its change according to the storage period of kimchi, and I'm not sure if this suits an SL IA. I also haven't learned oxidation and redox things yet, so would it be hard for me to do this without any pre knowledge? Thank you for your help

Here is a website our bio teacher gave us, after seeing the amount of idea requests, I thought it might be an idea to share it. It has a list of practicals, most of which can be used for an IB bio lab report. There are also some documents such as examples, and consent sheets. http://www.nuffieldfoundation.org/practical-biology/topics

Hi, so I'm not sure about my research question. I've been told that I need to be extremely specific and that the reader should know everything about my experiment after reading my research question. When I tried framing it, I saw that it was too long, but my teacher said it was okay. I'm really confused, because I've never seen such a long research question before. It is: What is the effect of different sugar concentrations (0.8M, 0.9M, 1.0M, 1.1M, 1.2M, 1.3M, 1.4M of 1:1 glucose/fructose solution) on the percent of sugar fermented by measuring the amount of ethanol when 1.00 ± 0.01g of
