Hi, I'm Biology SL student and currently designing an experiment about yeast fermentation. My teacher told us to do the lab by varying one of the factors affecting yeast fermentation. But.... I mean, isn't it too simple? For example, I could just change the temperature of each dough by putting each of the the bowls or whatever in water bath, ice bath, room temp, etc and see the results. How to do that kind of experiment is like everywhere in the internet. I've always been wondering if it's more important to invent a very creative lab which not others can think of (the results even can be unpredictable, too!), or it's just fine to do a very normal and predictable one as…

Let me keep it short and sweet: Does one have to graph a control in the results section of the IA? I tested the effect of urea concentration on the rate of reaction of urease- i did a control trial using 0% concentration (water) would I have to graph this? if yes, I have a slight problem seeing that my data points have a clear logarithmic shape to them (like those enzymes graphs in textbooks with the plateau phase), however logarithmic best fit lines are N/A with data points at 0. Thanks in advance

Hallo, I have a really huge problem conserning my assessed laboratories in IB Biology. Please do not think I am exaggerate read the post first and judge later. My teacher in Biology cannot grade labs, at all. He does not know the criteria and does not bother learning them. As he is the only IB biology teacher with a license in the region he cannot be fired. He grades everyones labs waaay too high or is extremly affected by the personal relationship with him (if he does not like you, you WILL get a lower grade). Now so that you do not think I exaggerate I can tell you that the last year students were all lowered by 20 points which is the margin of 40% possible points to ac…

Hi, Ok so we did a photosynthesis lab measuring the effects of fizzy water and limewater on photosynthesis by looking at the change in CO2, O2, LIGHT INTENSITY AND TEMPERATURE. I have all the data and about 4 sets of runs. How and what should I graph? For example if I want to graph the fizzy water vs the lime water.. what should be on the y and x axis, Im sooooo lost.. thanks

I have a few days to come up with a research question on Photosynthesis. So far, I have came up with 2 ideas that may or may not be very good.. =/ 1. pH on the rate of photosynthesis. The problem with this one is how I would actually carry out the experiment. I'd need 5 different pH values, and I intend to use 2, 4, 6, 8, 10. I need suggestions on what chemicals should I add to get the mentioned pH values.. help anyone? 2. I was thinking since Ribulose bisphosphate is an important component in photosynthesis, is there any sort of chemical/enzyme i can add into the experiment that'll either increase or decrease the amount of Ribulose bisphosphate present in the plant lea…

I am lost in my data and can't figure out what statistical tests to run. I exposed plants to five different wattages of light over 15 minutes. I have a measurement for each minute, and I did five trials for each wattage so my data table for each wattage is five trials by 15 minutes. If I take an average of each minute, I can compare by wattage for rate of photosynthesis. What other statistical tests could I run with this data?

What is the highest standard deviation that is acceptable in IB lab reports? For example, when you do tests like the mann-whitney test (in psychology) there is a certain value and when you get a value above it, you know it's significant (or insignificant). The problem with the standard deviation is that the "best" or least value you can get is 0, but then there is no maximum for standard deviation. I got 20.83 for some results, and is that ok? How do I know whether that is too large anyway, for any experiment? thanks

Unfortunately, I am a Biology HL student. Choosing Biology HL was actually against my will; I had to take it, because I had B&M and German B, both SL, no HL. Given that I didn't want to change B&M or German to any other subject, I took a chance and chose Biology HL. I regret it 24/7. I have no desire to study either Medicine or Biology, or anything else closely related to Biology, for that matter. However, my teacher is not very devoted to us (yes, there are only 2 HL students, including me) and I have to learn everything by myself. Has anyone got any tips? Anything that could assure me I can pass this freaking exam? And yes, my Biology exams are on 17 & 18 Ma…

I've been staring at my lab report for about three hours right now and I can't figure it out. It's on a topic that I am having a hard time understanding generally so I could really need some help! Its a design lab and my aim is; The aim of this investigation is to find out how different climate circumstances can alter the rate of heat loss on various shapes. But now I can't figure out a proper hypothesis since the body shapes will be two different kind of shapes (rectangular vs. a more square shape) and thus, I will get different results for them I am assuming..? so how do I phrase this hypothesis? My teacher gave me this: "If variable (x) is ..............then .....…

My class is doing these experiments, as probably most you do, after which you have to write a report. However, most of the people call it different names and write different names on it. I just want to make sure, which is the correct one. Here are some of the examples of our names: Biology practical work Biology laboratory work Biology laboratory report It's a simple question, but I couldn't find a precise answer.

Hi everybody! For our IB Bio HL Year 2 class we have to design a lab involving biodiversity for practice for the actual internal assessments. Since this is not an actual IB exam, it wouldn't be academic dishonesty asking for some ideas. Me and my partner are currently considering doing a lab about the pH level of the soil in different areas and its effect on plant and animal life. However, a very similar lab has already been done. Thanks in advance for your help!

Hey I study IB Biology HL... Last year my Bio teachers neglected the practicals because we didnt have any double lessons in which to do them and i think we have done about 20 hours max of biology practicals... which means we have 40 left to do by May, but we only have 1 double biology lesson a fortnight (so we do most practicals then)... But what happens if we cant finish the 60 hours of practicals? I'm confused and im freaking out, every other subject seems to have a plan - except biology :'(

I'm doing a photosynthesis lab in which I'm taking 5 different lamps, putting 5 different colors of cellophane (red, blue, yellow, green, purple) over the bulb to change the wavelength of the light. A beaker full of water will be placed below after placing a plant in the water so it's fully submerged. Then I'll use probes to measure the pH every 10 minutes. This is a 5x5 experiment so I'll have five plants per lamp. What I'm wondering is what type of bulb should I use in the lamp and also what type of plant I should use. Really I would think any plant would work and I think UV bulbs would work just fine (though using plain white ones if possible would be more cost effecti…

I was thinking that since most of Bio. is terms that I would flashcards for the terms as well as the questions in the syllabus. Sorry if this sounds completely stupid but I was wondering what people did to make their flashcards standout (e.g. simple concise definitions, color, diagrams) because I'm gonna be coming back to terms that I learned now at the beginning of Bio when I'm taking the exam in 2 years. Also, for any of you IB graduates, would you recommend forming notes from a textbook or strictly using the syllabus to make sure you know everything because the textbook we use, C.J Clegg, sees pretty comprehensive Appreciate any help

During the last few weeks, our bio class has been doing our bio design lab, so I chose my topic based on the digestion of lipids. However, during the experiment, I realized that there are no result even when I increase the lipase concentration to 10%. I am doing this lab with a pH probe and I add a drop of detergent before every trial. Does anyone know why the result shows that there is no digestion? P.S. we have calibrate the pH probe many times already, and it works fine.

I wanted to use beakers and have 5 different amounts of water in each one and then heat them up and then see the heat loss and which would be the fastest. I'm in HL biology, I'm looking into buying either the Heinemann HL Bio book or the CJ Clegg Bio book. Yes, I do use Allott and our school supplies the big Campbell and Reece book, but C&R is huuuuuuuge and a pain to look through, and I already use Allott for studying like mad, however, I'm wondering if anyone has seen the two textbooks I mentioned above, and would give a suggestion to which one is best to use for supplementary reading (the notes we get in class are from the overhead with few diagrams so they're hard to memorize). For SL chem, we use the Heinemann book, and I love it, but everyone seems raving mad about Clegg for biology...

I feel like an idiot asking this but I'm having my first Bio test on Thursday so I being particularly OCD about my notes I can't seem to write good notes whereas last year, not to brag, but my notes were perfect. The problem for me is every time I leave something out while writing my notes I keep thinking about whether its going to come up in 2 years and I won't have studied it and its really making me procrastinate. Stupid, I know. But at the same time, I dont want to include a mass of info that I'm not gonna need so I was wondering whether I could get some advice from anybody.

We're doing our first lab this Thursday, and out teacher told us to start thinking and planning the experiment. I have planned to use a bag made from dialysis tubing containing a solution of sodium chloride. I will lower the bag into distilled water and see if the volume increases. However, my teacher keeps asking me if this is such a good idea and if I could do it in any other way. What do you think? Do I have a good plan? What is missing? What should I do?

Our teacher sent us a list of topics to inspire us, but there is nothing that interests me on there... The only human topic was how X influences reaction time... And the rest were either bacteria-related or plants... Im not a big fan of studying photosynthesis & dont have the knowledge to do anything with bacteria... What could be an interesting but easy biology field I could make a lab in? I was recently reading about the blind spot and got interested, but I dont know if its something good to make my internal assesment about it... And what should I test? Something's influence on it?

(Calibrated at 470nm) the results were: A: 1.098 B: 1.349 C: 1.675 D:1.705 okay so i dont really get the meaning of the results, and why did we use a colorimeter? so what is happening inside if the reading for A was 1.098? please help
