Hey I just wonder how much paper 3 counts when getting a final grade in Biology HL. Sorry if the information is around but I could not find it. Say I get 4 on paper 1, 4 on paper 2 and 6 on paper 3, will my final grade be 5 if my IA-grade is 4 as well? I know the grades vary and one cannot say with 100% confidence that yes the grade will be 5, but approximately. Best wishes, kentpop

Hello all! I just had my first biology class and the teacher said that we are starting the year with a lab report. She gave us the general title which is: "Factors that affect pond water" and we are starting the design part in a week or so. Could someone mention some broad ideas about a factor I could use? Regards, Flomer

BIOLOGY EE HELP Question-- The effect of sound(sonotrophism) on the phytogeography of Algae --Phytogeography --- The geography of flora or plant life; where botany and physical geography overlap. So with this I want to investigate if sounds have an effect of how dispersed algae is an environment (am looking more into water based environments but algae can grow in any environment) . There's been a lot of research on noise pollution, and how it would affect animals in wildlife. However, no so much on actual plant life. Algae itself is known to be autotrophs(primary producers) . Which means they are fundamental to all the food chains in the world. One…

I am now vacillating between Biology SL and Environmental Systems & Societies SL! I don't think if I'll be doing anything medical related like becoming a doctor or a pharmacist, so I don't know if I should take Biology. I just find it interesting and I'd feel weird not learning it in highschool. What exactly do you learn in ESS?

Should i compare data with a friend to show accuracy? Im using standard deviation and other legitamite statistical tests but do u think it would be helpful to include a comparison maybe in my conclusion or is that unneccesary and not advised?

Hi guys, Is a 20ml measuring cylinder has an uncertainty of 0.5 mL? Is a pipette has an uncertainty of 0.1cm3? Is the mercury thermometer has an uncertainty of 0.5°C? Thank You in advance!

Hi guys, This question is pretty silly but my teacher ask us to measure the egg's "length" using thin string, we wrap it around and then use a ruler to measure the string to decide the egg's "length". BUT, do we call it as "length"? I mean, if we are going to name it as length, it will change the real meaning because, we basically wrap the string around the egg. So, do we call it as vertical circumference? Any ideas??? Help ASAP PLEASE :'(

Hey, IBS, Here's the Skydrive link to all the study material I used for my ES&S exams in November. Hopefully they will be of use to those doing the exam in May. http://sdrv.ms/QmqhqJ I think the most useful folder is the Syllabus page; it has the course outline, glossaries, assessment statements, etc. It also has revision summaries for the entire course, which was compiled from the PearsonBacc, Oxford, and OSC Revision Guide books for ES&S. There's also PowerPoints, word documents, etc on certain topics. Enjoy studying

Hi guys, Please help me answer: 1. Is a ruler with measurement (eg. 15.1 cm) has a 0.1cm or 0.05cm uncertainty? I'm confused of which one is true. 2. Is an electronic balance with measurement (eg. 70.52 g) has a 0.01g or 0.005g uncertainty? HELP ME PLEASE! Thank you!

Hi guys, Can you guys share ideas of how you remember your Biology notes or what books or websites you recommend to revise Biology, it such a good lesson! But there's things within the Chemistry of Life section or another topic where it talks about pentose sugars, hyrdolysis, amino acids and R-groups and drawing monomers and just generals along those lines and I'm curious as to how you remember it and what books/websites do you recommend? Thank you

Starting an Internal Assessment for IB Biology soon. I need to find a topic regarding enzymes. Haven't been having any luck finding any websites with good ideas. Any sites that you guys use to find topics that you can recommend would be highly appreciated. Or if you have any ideas yourself or past labs regarding enzymes I can conduct I would be most grateful.

Hi My class just completed the entire SL/HL syllabus part of human physiology, and now we have to complete a lab report on a factor that affects total lung capacity (which averages at about 6 decimeters cubed per person, but obviously can be significantly lower) - and I dont exactly know what single factor I think would be really appropriate to 'change' (independent variable). Could someone give some ideas (looking at height, weight, standing/sitting, smokers vs non smokers etc) and could you possible give a reason as to how these/this particular factor(s) affect lung capacity? Anybody's assistance will be greatly appreciated, and I would really like to get replies ASAP,…

Hey guys, So this is my very first IA within IB Biology I HL and I'm confused. Obviously, our teacher can't help at all and I've tried coming up with ideas and I'm just honestly not sure what he's looking for. And we're also not allowed to talk to each other, so I can't ask other students what they are doing. Here's the general topic given to us by our teacher: "Design an experiment where you are measuring differences between two populations (two groups: male vs. female, senior vs. freshman, white vs. black, etc.) YOU CANNOT TEST HEIGHT. BE CREATIVE AND REALISTIC, YOU MUST PERFORM THIS EXPERIMENT NEXT WEEK." Originally I was thinking about doing something with colorblind…

I got a really bad mark for my labs, and I was hoping that for these exams I would get at least a low 5 to compensate for that grade. I tried finding ways to calculate the total percentage (based on what I got for my mocks) but it was hopeless!

How do you read them? There's a lot of questions in past papers that ask for you to identify whether these two kids are related to man I or woman II or whatever, but I never know how... can anyone explain it in Layman's terms!? (By DNA profiles I mean the horizontal lines of DNA separated via gel electrophoresis by the way)

I've always wondered this especially for ESS & Bio. If we have the same meaning but maybe not exactly the same wording, do we get the answer correct or are they really picky on those? Or a right idea that doesn't appear on the markscheme? My ESS teacher said its up to their discretion, but my biology teachers mark sooo tightly.

Please and thank you. 1. Explain how the collecting ducts can alter the volume of urine produced by the kidney. [5] 2. Blood plasma, glomerular filtrate, and urine have different concentrations of solutes, such as glucose, protein and urea. Explain the processes occurring in the kidney that cause the differences in the concentrations of these solutes between blood plasma, glomerular filtrate and urine. [8]

Okay, this probably makes me sound fairly stupid, as most people find these questions super easy, but I never seem to answer them correctly! Is there some kind of technique I'm missing out on or something? For example, if we are given questions with graphs on, I can read from the graph but when it comes to stating suggestions or reasons why the data is what it is, I'm lost... If anyone can help me out here, I'd appreciate it a lot as I really want to do well in Biology Thanks in advance! NB: I do Higher, if that helps with any advice Edit: Sorry if there are existing threads/ this is in the wrong place, didn't see anything!

Hey guys, So far in Biology SL we have done 2 Lab reports (internals). Our teacher says that we might do 1 or 2 more during the year. I was just wondering, how many of the internals are actually going to go towards the actual mark in Biology ? and how many of them are sent to the IB ? Thanks in advance

Hello! So my ESS teacher went on a pregnancy leave last month and we have no clue what to do for the exam. (my IB DP buddies and I are wiggin' out!) Can someone tell me how the exam is set up? The only thing I know is that part of it is a case-study, but even so I don't know what that entails. Thank you so much! And if any of you have any good links to good reviews that would be EXTREMELY helpful! Thank you!!

I'm sorry if this is in the wrong place because I've only been here a handful of times. (What is a handful anyway? lol) I have to have IA Topics by Monday for my class. I'm willing to do anything that isn't expensive to do because my family is struggling financially so I don't have money to do a project that requires 20 plants or whatever. I'm in Biology SL and will take it again next year because I'm not testing out this year. I don't mind because Science is really difficult for me and I tend to stumble a lot and have to study harder with that subject to get anything in unlike Math or Economics. I have a few topics but I don't know if they are good enough? One is using …

Hey all, I have a lab coming up, and the planning portion is due Tuesday. The lab is 2.1.7, the question being "describe and explain population interactions using examples of a named species". My teacher recommended having our "question" start with, What is the effect of inter/intracompetetion of ____ on _____... Besides being confused by the question, I'm finding it hard to find a topic to discuss. She limited it to vegetation, since we're actually doing this in class afterwards. Any ideas?

Hello all! So we all just got the official dates for exams and if I'm correct, the bio HL paper 1&2 are may 13th? And then the day after paper 3 Honestly, like many people were probably forced to do, I've only taken biology because I did not want to take chemistry or physics. In my 11th grade I did SL (that's how we did it at our school) and then I was forced to take HL this year because my new school doesn't offer SL. I got 5's and 6's in the SL exams but all I've gotten this year is 4's I guess part of my problem is that I tend to study like a day or two before the exams and it really doesn't work for me..I know I know, don't nag me hehe. I really really want to g…

We used distilled water, 5%, 10%, 15% corn syrup solutions to test movement of water in and out of cell by observing the mass of taros in these solutions but the mass decreased more for the 10% corn syrup solution rather than the 15% solution which should have shrunk the most since it has the most solute outside the cells so water shoulda moved out the most to find an equilibrium.... What could have possibly accounted for this? And how should I account/mention this in my conclusion ?
