Hello guys, I just performed an IB HL Bio Lab testing systolic and diastolic pressure after the ingestion of Gatorade. Thing is, the data collected was only the blood pressure of the subject BEFORE and AFTER ingestion. So for example, I only have one number that means the difference of the blood pressure before and after. How am I supposed to complete Aspect 3 of the Data Collection and Processing then? How am I supposed to make a line graph with that graph? Is it possible to get the marks by doing other graphs, such as bar graph? If so, how would I make up the points for "THE GRAPH MUST INCLUDE ERROR BARS"? Thanks!

What do people normally do for ESS design IA that has to be a field study? So far, all I've done is counting weeds or organisms.

Okay! I need all of the help I can receive as soon as possible because tomorrow is my last day to experiment! I'm testing the effect of temperature on Lipase. I'm using vegetable oil because of all the lipids. I'm getting to my desired temperature by using a hot water bath and then I'm testing the amount of lipids left by using the spectromic 20d+ so test the absorbency. My question is: what is the lipid absorbance wavelength to use? I've tried research it but I keep getting different answers. PLEASE HELP

I am working on the evaluation part of my IA. I want to ask whether measuring the increase in vertical length of the plants above soil per day is LESS accurate than the increase in biomass per day. If so, why is this the case? (Is it because it is possible to have two plants of the same length, but one with greater biomass and hence higher growth rate?) Your help is much appreciated !!

Hey guys, we have a really crappy bio teacher who's made a complete mess of explaining these two chapters. Do you know any really good thorough videos that I can use to teach myself these concepts as I do not entirely understand the textbook? Thanks,

I have a question about rounding the Mean and Standard Deviation in my Table of Results. If the data that I collect (DV) is logically rounded to 0 decimal places because it is in full units.... What do I do with Mean & STDEV? Do I round them to 0 as well? It looks very strange and seems un-precise. Or maybe round even the DV (the bmp) to .0 or .00? I just heard we have to be consistent. Thanks.

So I'm taking my final environmental systems and societies exam in about a week and it's the only subject of mine that I'm feeling slightly uncomfortable about. I've been endeavoring to go over my notes to ensure I know the content, but find that when I do past papers, it actually varies quite significantly from straight testing of syllabus details. I'd really appreciate any advice!

I'm currently looking for a Biology tutor I was wondering if anyone has tried using Video Tutor ( http://www.ibsurvival.com/links/goto/297-video-tutor/ ) Did it help? What was your experience? or Do you think that it's not really worth it and if I work extra hard I'll get the same results? Thank you

Hello, we are preparing for our IB1 exams at the moment and I was wondering if there is a data book for Biology. We have one for Chemistry and Physics so I assumed so, but could not find one online. On a similar note if there is no data book are we expected to memorise Amino Acid codons?

Okay, so for my Biology HL labs I'm having a bit of trouble. For my experiment, I am testing the effects of temperature on Lipase. To do this I am combining vegetable oil (because of the lipids) and Lipase in a test tube - in a water bath- and using Sudan III as my indicator. The major obstacle I am facing currently is figuring when I put the 3 drops of Sudan III in the test tube after I have allowed 5 mins for the reaction to occur, I mix the indicator in and all that happens is the mixture because a shade darker. Am I not suppose to mix the indicator in? How do I get data from this? Any helps/tips? Thanks!

So tomorrow marks the adventure into an ecosystem for my Biology (SL). I'm testing to see what the dissolved oxygen level is in certain sectors of a stream in relationship to the crayfish population. I've assembled all my materials and things like that, but I'm wondering about controlling variables. I understand that in my conclusion I will be writing an error analysis on how the variables I was unable to efficiently control may have skewed my results. But I mean the stream is constantly flowing, so turbidity, temperature, depth where the crayfish was, and murkiness of the water could all really play a factor, only some of which I can control. My question is: Is it alrigh…

Hi guys, I'm in Year 2 HL Biology Our class has been told to Design an investigation into a factor affecting germination in a particular species of plant. Does anyone have any suggestions about what factors I could change, what seeds to use or any other point that may be helpful in completing this lab? I've done my research but it would be helpful if I can get any help Thanks - Rimsha

Hey, so Biology syllabus I have is for first exams in 2009, but most of the subjects I'm taking (Economics, Russian ab in., English B, EE) got rid of that syllabus and got a new one - first exams in 2013. It'd seem rational there is also a new syllabus, but I couldn't find it anywhere on the web. My teacher couldn't find it in OCC, but she's not very computer-savvy. So, the ones who are taking exams in 2013 and 2014, do you have/study from a syllabus first exams in 2009 or 2013?

We have to write a design lab on the topic of nutritional effect on the body. once weve handed them in the teacher will select the best 5 to perfrom. these experiments have to involve the use of people as subjects. I'm having a really tough time coming up with ideas. These are some ideas I have, though I am not very pleased with them and there not very specific: The effect of the amount of carbohyrdates (like rice) intake on how tired you feel a certain nutrient's (don't know what nutrient) effect on body temperature Eating more of a certain food and its affect on our saliva content. or pH? for example testing pH of saliva for calcium deficiency Any advice would be great…

HI, I've been thinking of an EE topic and I came up with this, "What is the influence of age, gender and BMI on the myotatic reflex" and maybe discuss the diseases associated with the disfunction of the neurons responsible for this reflex after coming up with an experiment. Does it seem like a good topic? Thank you

I'm having trouble coming up with an EE topic, does this sound like a good one? "What is the effect of age and gender on the formation of visual and verbal short-term memories in the human hippocampus?" The experiment wouldn't be too complicated and can be done in school. Let me know what you think!

Hello, I'm considering joining IB Biology HL. During 10th grade, however, I got a B as my final grade, and I'm quite disappointed in that. I was a B+, went down to a B from getting a C in my final exam. Meh. Do you think a B is good enough to join Biology IB? I quite like Biology, and am seriously considering joining. But scared that I'll probably fail miserably. Do you think I should join? Do you think a B in standard Bio is good enough?

Hello people, Biology exams are comming up soon so I came up with an idea for us to share what WE think will come up this year on the paper, as You know the IB examiners do not spend much time creating questions and mainly end on previous ones. Haha. WHAT DO YOU THINK WILL BE ON THE TEST THIS YEAR ?? PS. I know this may be lame but it helps to reduce. Believe me!!!

Hi! I'm planning on doing my extended essay in Biology. Here is my research question: "How does anaesthetics numb specific areas (nerves) in the mouth?" My question now is, how am I supposed to make an experiment related to this? I've been looking around trying to find something which I am authorized to do, but there's nothing to find. A quick answer would be so lovely seeing as I need to hand in my plan tomorrow for approval. Thanks in advance! Anyone? PLEASE HELP, GOT ONLY 2 HOURS LEFT! Thank you

I've been doing a few Bio SL exams and for some questions, I realize that my answers (what I have been taught/what is in the textbook) are completely different from the answers in the markscheme. Aka, different meaning, but still the correct answer. Also, the markscheme answers for the same question sometimes change from year to year. So my question is, if my answer is still correct but different from the markscheme, do I still get marks for it? Another question, if I write exactly what the markscheme says, without extra detail, do I get the mark? Or is the markscheme just a guide for the examiner-- because some MS answers aren't detailed at all... my notes are about 5 ti…

I had a few questions regarding Biology SL: How hard is it to get a 7? I know this is a subjective question, but relatively speaking, is this one of the tougher exams in terms of the curve? Also, would learning all the assessment statements suffice, or would it be wiser to go through and annotate each section? Thanks in advance!

Hey, I did a lab on the effect of placing identical blood samples in different concentrations of sugar solutions on the shape of RBC's. I mainly had to observe how the shape of RBC changes as a result under a microscope. I have no idea what statistics to include. I mean there is no mode, median, range or even standard deviation to include any ideas on what to include for aspects 2 and 3 of Data collection and processing? Thanks

I did a lab on the reducing sugar content of different fruits, where i did the usual benedicts test and obtained different colours and then I tested the colors using a colorimeter. Now what im not sure of is what the results from the colorimeter actually show! Since i didnt use any known concentrations i expect that there should be a relation between the concentration of reducing sugars and the absorbance value given by the colorimeter..do you know what the values from the colorimeter show about the sugar concentration? Thanks

Someone please heelp me So, this isn't connected to IB (not directly, but indirectly yes - I need this insect to base my investigations on) but this is my last resort and I'm really desperate. So, we're at the seaside, my family and I, and I saw this small black insect (thick, but not like a fly - thinner than a fly) which looked like a small dragonfly and it flew in a specific geometrical pattern. I would like to draw it, but I can't remember it exactly. I just know that it flew galantly like it was just gliding though the air with making no sound. Please, if anyone knew what type of an insect that was, I would be more than grateful! PS. I live in Croatia, so the cli…
