I am writing my Extended Essay in Biology and my Research Question is 'To what extent has stem cell research developed since 1960?'. I know that for a science EE, you should always do an experiment to help your research. Problem is, I can't find any experiments to do with stem cells which is easy enough for me to do. Any ideas?

Hi Guys, This is my first publication and after browsing your forums for some time I concluded not a lot of people offer help in biology on this site. I´m currently a Junior at a Private School in Cuba and last summer I attended a Summer Course at Harvard on Introductory Biology for Pre-Medical students. Consequently, most of the aspects covered in the syllabus (excluding topics like Ecology and Evolution and Plants) are of my upmost interest and I can safely brag of my knowledge. I want to offer you guys a chance to ask any questions you guys want about biology and I will try my best to give you an eloquent answer and explanation so that you fully understand the topic a…

Hi, i'm kind of new here. I do check out the website from time to time but I finally decided to sign up! Anyways i'm a senior who's taking HL bio, and shockingly i've never written a lab report. Time passed and I never really cared to sit down and learn how to do so my teacher would literally kill me if I asked him + I have one due the day after tomorrow and a planning lab as well, PLEASE I need an easy walk through guide, much appreciated for your help in advance. And also, please spare me for my laziness, I'm beating myself up as it is already

So I have to hand in a lab report tomorrow but I haven't been told the IB standard and I've been googling but there are so many different versions I don't know which one my teacher wants. The Lab is : How does a catalase compare to the action of a non-protein catalyst under different conditions. Right now I'm just trying to get my Hypothesis but I have all the data. My teacher didn't tell us to create a hypothesis before the lab so no one did, she just told us we have to do the conclusion and stuff for the report but don't I need a hypothesis and stuff for that?

Hi, Our teacher told us to do three trials for one of our IA's, but I thought you had to do five. Especially since you can't use SD or t-test with less than five trials, right? Edit: I don't know why the thread was posted twice :/

So, the assessment statement itself seems pretty straight forward. Just look at the profiles and compare them to decide whether they are identical and from the same individual, similar and from related individuals, etc. But then there's the teacher's notes: I just can't wrap my head around what this means, and I can't find any mention of it in my textbook (Pearson). Is what is mentioned in the teacher's notes is required knowledge? And if yes, could someone explain it to me? Thanks in advance!

Hi! I'm doing a lab on the effect of glucose concentration on the rate of carbon dioxide production by yeast. I'm having a hard time finding limitations/errors in my experiment that aren't human errors, such as not using the amount of glucose solution required, etc. Are there any suggestions on what errors I could include? Thanks!

I'm in Biology IB 2 (SL) and i have no idea what our IA is our what our project is. I have no idea what our requirements are. Our school isn't very clear in what we need so i'm asking you guys. What are the requirements to complete the course of Biology? Do we have an IA? How do we do it? Do we have a project? How do we do it? Is the project the IA?

Hey guys, I'm a rising junior that's going into IB and I have some questions. In my original plans, I wanted to take AP Chem and IB Bio HL, but there's no room in my schedule so I only got AP Chem. My IB coordinator suggests taking IB Bio my senior year but I was just wondering if colleges look down upon SL Bio. I would like to major in medicine and am torn apart between IB Bio HL and SL...

I am a pre-IB student, and I am currently in the process of writing a biology lab report. However, I am finding the hypothesis really hard to write. I never did a biology report in my previous studies (i just started pre-IB, 5 months after the other students since I spend a semester abroad). I just put this topic under Biology SL/HL since I figured you were the ones who knew the most about it. The topic is enzyme activity (specifically amylase), and so far, I have written following for my hypothesis: "The experiment will show whether or not the enzyme amylase is present in the enzyme solution. If amylase is present, the iodine will react with the starch." I am fully awar…

Greetings! Right now, I'm working on my second IA for Biology SL, and the subject given to us is "soil". I've already had my topics approved and narrowed them down to one: How do different pollutants effect the buffer capacity of soil? Of course, I have questions: Does this make a concise and meaningful topic? What kind of soil out of the silt-foam-clay triangle would you recommend to be best for this research? What type of environment could I get this soil? EXTRA HELP: How exactly do I measure a soil's buffer capacity? The only answers I've managed to find on the Internet come from scholarly journals I have to purchase or subscribe to. Thank you!

Is it IB policy that if a student fails a subject (e.g. Biology) he will not be eligible for the Final Exam in May? I am just curious as in our school we have a harsh policy towards MOCKs. Basically, if someone fails MOCKs he will not be accepted for FINALS! Is it possible? Is it IB general policy or is it just my school? Please Help as I am scared that I might fail Biology MOCKs and I want to know what happens if that will occur!

How am I supposed to include a 5X5 experimental design (5 forms of independent variable with 5 repeats of the experiment) for this particular lab?? It seems fairly simple, so I'm not quite sure how I would obtain the 5 forms of independent variables... so far I only have two independent variables... Research question: How will different temperatures affect chemical reactoin of the enzyme catalayse in hydrogen peroxide? What I have so far: Independent variable= temp of potato; hydrogen peroxide. Dependent variable= reaction time in test tube through measuring time taken for paper to float to top of test tube. Any suggestions would be highly appreciated!

Hey guys, As stated in the topic title, our school is having trouble finding a proper biology teacher, let alone one that is IB certified. I just have a few questions if this lab would be eligible or if it seems "good enough" to score well for Bio HL. I am hoping to send this in for the "design" criteria.. Basically, I want to set up an experiment to compare the breakdown of lactose using lactaid pills (or other similar pills) for skim milk vs. whole milk. My hypothesis is that it would take a bit longer to breakdown lactose in skim milk because there's more of it (lower the fat content, higher the lactose). Control: temp, amount of milk To measure this, I will be …

Hey guys I have a few questions regarding the biology internal assessments, since our teacher is new to the IB, he isn't sure of what's going on either... 1) To my understanding, we have to send in at least two labs, and we can kind of choose which criteria to be assessed on? Does this mean we only have to send that part of the lab report or do we still have to send the whole thing? (i.e. I choose to be evaluated on DCP for this lab, so do I send in the whole lab or just the DCP part?) 2) Is there a lot of difference between assessing bio hl vs. bio sl labs? I'm doing hl and I'm afraid my labs may seem to be too "simple." Just on another note, all IAs for the may 20…

Hi everyone! I'm creating the data table for my IA experiment and I'm running into a few problems. This IA is about the CO2 production of yeast in relation to the concentration of glucose in a 10mL solution. However, I'm having a hard time calculating uncertainties for the glucose an the CO2. The glucose is given in percents, and the CO2 is ppm (parts per million). For the glucose, would I need to put the uncertainties in mL, or is there a way to calculate uncertainties for percents? And would the uncertainty for ppm be +/- 0.5 ppm? I'm quite confused.... Thanks!

Hello:) any help would be very much appreciated. I am working on my biology IA, design lab, on the innate behaviour in invertebrates (taxis or kinesis) (Topic E3). I decided to investigate the chemotaxis of ants to NaCl. I explained why ants in general need NaCl (salt) to maintain life. After handing in my draft, my teacher told me that I have to look up on the internet the NaCl concentration favored by the particular species of ants that I chose, rather than ants in general. Is your Bio teacher as picky as him?

Hi guys, I just finished my experiment for our first real Biology IA. This time I used my computer to collect data and I pretty much ended up with 2*300 data points for my 5 variation times 5 repeats. My teacher wouldn't answer my question, so here it is: Do I have to include all this data in my IA in the tables for raw data? Thanks Carl

Hello, I am investigating the acceptance of 9:3:3:1 ratio in dihybrid cross (Mandels law of independent assortment). I am using 4 different genotypes of corn cobs (kernels): yellow and smooth, yellow and wrinkled, purple and smooth, purple and wrinkled. What could be my control variables? I just have 1 which is the same method of counting. Also I dont know which type of uncertainties I need to calculate. I was thinking to say that while counting I made uncertainy of +4 kernels, so if i do 4 trials, I will have uncertainty of +16 kernels. What do you think about that, and what more could I do? Any idea would be appreciated. Thanks in advance

So im in the third semester will be taking May 2014 IB exams Idk how much marks did i get, but my teacher said it was pretty bad. I swear maybe its because i didnt manage to study everythin (i studied 2 weeks earlier but got troubled a day before and i was sick as well) . I'm planning to do accounting and finance. I find that im better at subjects that require logic and not facts and remembering Ive been telling teachers how bio is my weakest subject, and tried to change to so…

For an IB Biology Internal Assessment do uncertainties (±) exist for the independent variable if you are making pH solutions or is only for the dependent variable. Also if you are hand counting something for the dependent variable do uncertainties exist then? Finally, if you are measuring something in mL and it's 2.5ml would the uncertainty be ±0.05 or ±0.1. Thanks!

Hello everyone, For my BIO IA I am manipulating temperature. To do this, I require an incubator. However, most of the incubators online are very expensive. I also need an incubator with a clear window so I can shine light through (I need it for the plants I am keeping in there). Here is the one I found http://www.shellab.com/store/GI6-SHEL-LAB-Digital-Laboratory-Incubator-5.7-Cu.Ft.-120V-also-model-1546.html It seems perfect, but costs $3000. I am only creating the design portion of this lab but I am worried IB will mark me down for the price of the incubator. Any guidance? Thank you

Hello guys, The topic for my IA is: Investigate an abiotic factor that effects either rate of seed germination or rate of plant growth. I thought of several topics, but a new one I thought of is how the wavelength of light affects the rate of plant growth. How would I alter the rate of plant growth? Would I just use a filter? Thank you.
