As I said in a previous form, I am starting my first year of Biology HL this year, and I was just looking for some notes online. Are the wikibook notes reliable?

Hi, I am a bit worried because I believe that our biology teacher has misunderstood what IB expects of lab reports. She has given us an outline on how to write a report but i am unsure if it fits with IB. Can you please give me some info of how many reports are going to be assessed and what an IB report is supposed to look like (in chemistry i think we are doing fine) Thank you very much, Capa...

Well, there is a chemistry one. We ought to have a Biology one as well So what options do you take, whether SL or HL. I have HL but the first option we had was sort of compulsary in the school for all Biology students and that was Evolution. It's an interesting topic but I have a bit trouble studying it for some reason. The second topic we haven't decided yet on though.

The purpose for my lab is to determine the solute concentration of a potato. (Osmosis lab) In my hypothesis, I typed in some background info, the mechanics of osmosis, and how I would find the solute concentration. If I were to use mathematics to estimate that a potato has approximately 25% solute concentration and the actual results prove to be less than 10%, should I change my hypothesis? Or can I discuss why my hypothesis was wrong in my conclusion? This is my first lab in Biology HL So stressing...

I always seem not to get a 2 on my experminents in SL Biology. I really think I get most of the necessary parts from the rubric into my experiment paper, but usually I don't. Any suggestions on how to actually get 2 on my experiment write ups?

Just thought i might give my two cents worth on Biology study that i've found really helpfull. so my bio teacher writes exam questions for the may exams in the northern hemisphere and has given us a bit of insight into how to know that you know all the content that your meant to. write notes according to the syllabus points. seriously its simple, ingenious, and no one ever thinks about it. okay so all of the questions in the exams have to come straight from the sylabus, they cant use words or topics that arent in ther. And luckily the sylabus in biology is very very specific (unlike history or psychology for example) and detailed. So when your studying if you go through e…

Well yes... my first biology design lab this year and i'm half-scared half-excited. Too bad the half-scared part has a more important issue: I don't know how to approach my lab topic... So apparently it has to do with enzymes and our class is going to investigate the effect of changing one variable that will alter enzyme activity. Because enzymes work under specific conditions, if you change that specific condition we have to find out how it will change. Some key things to mention( we can choose which type of enzymes we would like to do: beef liver, potato, pineapple .etc) Yay..... So here is my question to you: has anyone done a lab that has to do with enzymes or simila…

Hi, So, I am a junior and almost finished with my first year of HL Bio. We have multiple books for that class, which include Campbell-Reese (the textbook and the lab manuals), Biology for the IB (Minka Peeters Weem), Biozone, a few AP lab manuals, and my teacher prints out previous questions (specific to certain topics) along with the answers which we are supposed to read and study (but aren't tested on). The problem with my teacher is that she assigns the Campbell-Reese online work(we don't have any in class tests) , and considering you can re-take the tests as many times as you want, I don't know if I'm really learning anything. Also, for Biozone, she gives us a wee…

Guys, I have always loved to be independent and do everything myself but I seriously need help now. This is my first experiment and I really feel useless here. I havve tried searching all over the net and try to see whether there is a place where I can get some samples of similar experiments but I didn´t find any resource...this is frustrating, I need help ASAP. And it is due on thursday...so basically I am telling you what I have to do. If you can help me in any way...here it goes. Maybe you can tell me what the procudure is or simply tell me how to avoid this kind of situation in the future (Resources much appreciated) Thank you in advance.

I was wondering if any school attended a trip to the Environmental Center there as part of their IB Science trip there? I was told that many other schools go there? Anyone here went? If so, tell me how the experience was?

Hello, I'm planning to take Biology SL for May 09 and I was wondering if the following is correct The core consists of Topics 1 -6 [statistical analysis, cells, the chemistry of life, genetics, ecology and evolution, human health and physiology]? This is where paper 1 draws its questions from? The options are A - G? Which do you believe is the easiest to do well in? My teacher from last year recommended C and some other one that I can't remember now. Are we supposed to just study two of the options and that's it [for IB paper 3]? or are we supposed to focus on all 7? I feel studying an additional 5 options would be unnecessary. Where does paper 2 draw its information fro…

I hate lab reports. I just can't figure out how they are supposed to be structured and how you find perfect explanations and solutions to the problems encountered. I hate lab reports. I know you can get 6 points on each of the three criteria. My best score is 4-3-2. That's crap, because I'm quite good at biology otherwise. So, however, now we've just done this wonderful practical where we investigated the effect of vessel size on bacterial growth of E.Coli. Of course there's a report on this. Have anyone here done the same practical and feel like they can explain what happens? And does anyone know a site or something where you can find reports that have received great …

Someone once told me that ES and Biology cannot both be counted for the IB Diploma because there is significant syllabus overlap between the two courses. Is this true? I ask because I'm looking for a 'filler' SL subject for my Diploma. I'm taking Bio, and I remember hearing about the ES/Bio thing before, and also because IBO had scheduled the two exams at the same time, which seems to suggest that most Bio students are expected to NOT be ES students. My IBC claims that there is no such rule, however he is very new and nobody in my school has ever done ES + Bio together. I certainly do not want to slug through 2 years and find out that I don't have enough subjects for …

Hi i'm currently doing grade 11 bio in SL and my teacher finally gave me a design lab today and i'm supposed to finish the outline in 2 days. The problem is: search for the relationship between two variables to determine their effect on the cardio-vascular for breathing systems. (ex. age affecting heart rate) I was thinking of heartbeat or breathing but i don't know how to approach further from here... Can anyone give me some good topics that has to do with either heartbeat or breathing????

Hi, I know the breakdown of the Biology HL exam (which comes up to 76% of our grade) So what is the other 24%? Our portfolios and Group 4 project?? So lets say I get 70% on the exam (which equates to about a 5) , do I add that score to my Group 4 and portfolio mark?? and henceforth boost my mark to a possible 6? Thanks,

This is a very simple question, and I think my brain is just being stupid right now, but I have just started revising for biology and the way that the IB textbook teaches how to calculate linear magnification of drawings is very confusing to me. Could someone please explain to me how to calculate the magnification of a drawing? Both converting a given magnification to a scale bar, and scale bar to magnification would be nice , thanks.

Hi, I'll start with a simple question to my problem: Where can I find volume and concentration instructions for a Catalase-Hydrogen Peroxide experiment? Basically, I have access to 5% Catalase and 20% Hydrogen Peroxide. I do not know the volume amounts to add of either so I need a source of information on how much, milliliters for example, of each I should add (preferably an internet site) as well as in what concentration they should be added.

I might have an idea on how this works but I'm not completely sure. I figured I might as well go into this forum and ask all you IB Biology dorks! I'm in Pre-IB, so this is only like the basics. However... The circulatory system is like the circulation of blood throughout our bodies. "Oxygen poor" blood returns to the right side of the heart after it has completed its journey throughout the body, and is then pumped to the lungs which provide it with a new supply of oxygen. After this, the blood flows into the left side of the heart, where it is pumped out to the body through the aorta, until it eventually returns to the right side of the heart again and the cycle is re…
