maereth
hi,I've got a question. I recently needed motivation for learning french. I don't understand movies (and I don't have to) which was the best way to learn english in my case, I also don't like french music so I started to listen to french versions of disney songs (great method!) And trying to understand some lyrics I came across this: more precisely, the first word. Can anyone tell me what 'dites' means here? I assume it's a form of 'dire' of course but it doesn't suit anything I've learned till now. I'd say it's imperatif but it shouldn't be written that way in this case... GirlwiththeBlueBox
I'd say it's imperative too, given that the imperative form for vous for the verb dire is dites.Ex: Dites-moi = tell meAt least, that's what it seems to me. Btw, I love this revision method! I might use it! Edited October 22, 2012 by GirlwiththeBlueBox Reply
ChocolateDrop
Dites is a conjugation of dire. It's second person plural so vous.http://www.wordrefer...rbs.aspx?v=direLearning french from Disney songs is really smart, thanks for sharing.http://www.wikihow.com/Use-the-Imperative-in-French Edited October 22, 2012 by ChocolateDrop Reply
GirlwiththeBlueBox
@Chocolatedrop-- the second person should be 'you', not he/she, and the conjugation of dire for 'vous' is dites. Maybe you're confusing vous (you all) with tu (you singular)? Reply

Sorry Dites seems to be the imperatif. In my second link, a wikihow on how to form the imperative in french and 'Ne lui dites rien!' (Don't tell him anything) is given as an example of the imperative. Reply
maereth
ok, my fault ofc dites is an imperatif, as well as it's second person plural in a normal present tense. I just made a mistake in my notes which I wouldn't figure out without your answers so thanks anyway ;d Reply
