I think that Slumdog Millionaire is an okay choice for this Written Task. However, it does not make explicit references or obvious 'mentions' of how social groups were constructed or created through colonialism. I suggest that you instead choose another source that is more focused around your topic of interest: colonialism. Try to think of movies, books, advertisements or magazines that would fit your topic and then try to refine the topic even more.

You have to make sure that the topic (or the source) for the Written Task 2 is something you have actually studied in Part 2 as you are saying. Part 2 is Mass Communication and therefore it has to be related to this. No, you can't draw Post-Colonialism into this as it is more part of Part 1: Language in a Cultural Context.

Don't know, depends on your working pace and how determined you are to finish it. Keep in mind that it is a 800-1000 words task, and thus it will take a considerable amount of time to finish it. Make sure you outline it (THAT IS REQUIRED FOR WT2) and that you keep within the word limit. Also remember that for the Written Task 2 you have to answer to one of the prescribed questions by the IBO in the English Language & Literature guide:

  • How could the text be read and interpreted differently by two different readers?
  • If the text had been written in a different time or place or language or for a different audience, how and why might it differ?
  • How and why is a social group represented in a particular way?
  • Which social groups are marginalized, excluded or silenced within the text?
  • How does the text conform to, or deviate from, the conventions of a particular genre, and for what purpose?
  • How has the text borrowed from other texts, and with what effects?

Good luck!
