I've been looking for tips for this subject. For example: How to get above 5 in ESS when you don't even understand what you're teacher is talking about in class. And yes, I am that desperate. Help, please. HELP. So, please, any tips for ESS. This topic is open for everyone who took ESS for their group 3.

Hey guys. So apparently since we are short on time to do our two IAs (don't ask why...I know we have two years to complete them but our teacher is very incompetent and made us wait until now to do them; long story). This one teacher teaches us both Bio and Chem. We are done one IA for both bio and chem, and will be doing one more IA and then submitting it for both bio and chem. So basically we did 3 complete IAs in total instead of 4. Is this allowed? Will I lose my diploma because this teacher hasn't read the rules properly?

Could someone please tell me whether we are supposed to select the best 6 six labs for the three different criteria or will they be chosen for us by the IBO after submitting the PSOW form? There are six students in the ESS class, out of which one happens to be a certificate student, will all 5 students labs go or will be only a few?

Hello World! (this would be my first topic) I didn't get much from my IB Bio 11 course since the teacher left us to self-study the majority of the time. Thus I didn't do really well with graphs in the tests. My question would be: Is there a standard way to read an IB graph? Any particular buzzword to use and any sentence pattern to follow?

Can someone please explain how the absorbance readings at 260nm be analyzed? I know that the readings at 260nm determines the concentration of DNA, but I'm not sure how to interpret the values I got? I got the values ranging from 20 µg/ml to 120 µg/ml.

Can anyone help me please? We are doing virtual lab reports for HL Biology as IA. The 'lab reports' look like the following worksheets, is it acceptable in IB? Does not this worksheet count as a kind of plagiarism? Thanks in advance for the answers! DNAandGenesWorkSheet.doc Enzyme Controlled Reactions Worksheet.doc

Hey guys my teachers wants us to hand in all our lab reports tmrw because the external deadline for the IAs is at Friday so they're sending them off. However I cannot hand them in since I'm sick at home and nobody knows where i store them in my room at my boarding house.. Is it really bad if I don't hand in an IA? Like will I fail my diploma ? Xx

Hey guys!, I am in IB1, taking my exams next year. Our teacher mentioned today that with all of the IA changes*, we might be able to do IA's in which we don't actually have to do the experiment, but that we could use online data and just analyse that, as long as we have a very specific question. Does anyone know anything more about this? *I believe in previous years, sciences were required to submit two design, two data collection and two conclusion parts. We now only have to submit one experiment with all three parts. (I think.) Thanks!!

So I have an ESS lab IA due tomorrow (http://goo.gl/forms/aGVscmr3RJ), and I'm missing about half of the total surveys that I need. It's about sustainable building based on what region of the US you live. I would be immensely grateful if you could take it and spread it around. Also, do you know of any other ways I can get my survey out there? I already tried Facebook and Google Plus. Thanks a bunch!

Heeeeyaaa, IB-fellas! I'm planning to do an IA at home (which I was allowed to do by my bio teacher). I have H2O2 concentrations of 1%, 1,5%, 3%, 4,5% and 5%. How much 100% powdered catalase would I need in each test tube to ensure catalase is always in excess? I sincerely wish all of you 2015-grads the best of luck, I sure am having a hard time Panzer

Hey guys I need some ideas for my second self designed experiment in biology HL. I've already done my first one where I measured the rate of photosynthesis in plants influenced by different light intensities. Now I am struggling to find a research question for my second one.. Can anybody help ?! Thank you and good luck with you diplomas people We will rock it !

This goes for IAs in Chemistry and all the other sciences as well: Do moderators run the IAs through plagiarism checkers? Will we get heavily penalized (As in potentially losing our diplomas) if we have a few sentences that are very similar to others on the web? Like not blatant plagiarism but very similar? I'm frustrated because there are only so many ways you can explain a general scientific concept (like the definition of an electron, for example) and I don't want to risk losing my diploma for not having cited something that I learned many, many years ago. Thanks

1) What exactly is glycerol? I know it forms a triglyceride with fatty acids but what is it itself? Is it a carb/lipid/protein? 2) Anabolism = forming bonds = giving out energy? Catabolism = breaking bonds= requires energy? My bio teacher is so bad at chemistry and constantly contradicted what was taught the day before... 3) In one book, it said a cis-unsaturated fatty acid was one that was not hydrogenated, but in another it said that it means the H around a carbon double bond are on the same side. Which explanation is correct? 4) When the type of glucose is not stated, should I draw alpha-D-glucose or beta-D-glucose? 5) Is tertiary protein structure a bunch…

Hey guys... So, i have to pick a research question for my IA, and I couldn't really think of anything. My bio teacher wants the entire class to each come up with "original" research questions, and I'm struggling, because it's so hard to think of anything that I can do in a practical that hasn't been done a thousand times. I'm really interested in genetics, but I couldn't think of anything that I would be able to investigate. Do you think it would be okay to use the golden ratio to measure and compare people's faces and their parents faces, etc...? I was originally thinking of doing the typical "fruit fly" experiment, but it might be a bit difficult to find fruit fl…

Okay my idea for my biology IA is.. To investigate the effect of a competitive inhibitor and the effect of PH on the rate of enzyme activity of amalyse.. What do you guys think? Is this good enough for someone who does Biology HL? We only get to do one IA and we need to hand in in our first year of IB, so I dont get any second chances to fix things up if I mess up this one :/

So basically with enzyme inhibition... There are two types of inhibitors.. Competitive and non-competitive... Am I right in saying that the higher the substrate concentration, the lower the effect of the competitive inhibitor on the enzyme? And when it comes to non-competitive ones, am i right in saying that substrate concentration does not effect their rate of activity? Thats how I interpreted it when reading my biology textbook. Can someone please kindly clarify? And tell me if im right or not?

I need to write an exploration lab for investigating rate of photosynthesis by either measuring production of oxygen by counting bubbles or by measuring increase in biomass of plant. I cannot find any guidance on the internet on exactly how to plan any of those methods. For example, If i will measure increase in biomass i don't know for how long should i keep the plants under the light source or which plant to use or under which type of light source to put it under etc. Please help!

I´m just thinking about how to approach this question and I´m a bit confused. A student investigated the growth of 100 cress seedlings in 2 normally distributed populations andcarried out a t-test on the data. The calculated value of t was equivalent to a probability of between0.15 and 0.25. What conclusion can be drawn from this? Can someone explain please?

Hey guys, so let's say I have 5 tables of raw data with the uncertainty measurement of +/- 0.1 My next table would be the mean of the raw data, so what should I do with the uncertainty? Should I keep it as +/- 0.1 in the mean? Or should I add it according to how many variables I have, so total of +/- 0.6 let's say? Thank you!

Sorry if this is in the wrong topic, but I'm an IB Junior and we were doing recommendations for our senior year when I noticed a hole in my schedule. I want to HL in biology for my hole, but I'm already registered to take the IB Biology SL exam that i have to take. So if i take the exam for SL can i still take HL and put the HL on my diploma not SL? (Note: I already have 3 HLs in history english and spanish)

I am doing bio and I want to do well. I have found quite a few websites on the internet (bio ninja and so on) and their notes are not what the mark scheme is asking for. I mean those website are nice but some information there aren't quite accurate. So is there any PERFECT Biology website that has everything I need to know, not more, not less, and can get me full points in the exam?

Hello, I have to design an Enzymes IA D DCP CE. Right now I am planning my method, and I don't know what is a good and simple method for digestion. My enzyme is lactase, and I will use 100mm3 of lactose (probably milk) substrate concentration. I have no sample Enzymes Design IA so if someone could inform me about the methods you use for an enzymes IA I will be very grateful. Thank you so much!!

Hello I'm in the midst of constructing a design lab for my HL class however, I'm sort of unsure on how to go about writing it. The topic is factors affecting heart rate or factors affecting blood pressure. If I find a good factor for one of them, then I'd make my decision if I want to do heart rate or blood pressure. So far I have only considered factors affecting heart rate right now. I think I want to do a lab that addresses the factor of diet or exercise. However, what aspect would I specifically test? This is the part that gives me confusion. I sort of unsure on how to design a lab that refers to one of these and don't know what variables that I would s…

Hello everyone, so I am still uncertain about what to do with my last IA; we have to work topic 6: Human health and physiology. I already did one for this topic last year, which was about heart rate and exercise. My father suffers from diabetes type II and I could do something with this since he has this device to measure glucose levels in his blood, yet I don´t know what type of research question I could make with this. Diabetes is not my only option, so any idea is welcome. Thank you all very much in advance!

Apparently we have to design a lab for ESS that can fulfill all the three criteria for a lab report (Planning, DCP & DEC). The thing is I do not have time to do my own practical work or collect my own data so I was thinking of using secondary data. However, I have no idea how I am supposed to fulfill the criteria with using secondary sources and especially for the planning and data collection part. e.g. "Design a method that effectively controls the control variables" Although at the same time the teacher did mention that I could write a lab report using secondary sources. I don't really dare to ask him now because there's only one week left till the due date and…

Hi IBers! I can see that the topic title may seem confusing, so I'll explain it here: Our Biology-teacher has given us an IA where we will do the Design, and using the Design to do DCP and CE. We did the data collection today in the lab with our own Design. However, for the DCP, I did not get the results that I expected. Considering this, my Design may get lower marks. Is it possible to change the Design so that the experiment will go as expected, even though I have done it? I have not handed it anything yet, which means the teacher has not assessed it. She has however seen my work, and the variables in DCP might be quite different from the Design..

Okay.. for the first picture I know that the product of condensation is water. But what is the product of the hydrolysis of complex sugars(dissaccharides and polysaccharides)? For the second picture(I'm referring to question 2), are lipids broken down through hydrolysis??? For the third one, am I correct in saying that the energy stored in polysaccharides is mobilized through the hydrolysis of glycogen??? At first I thought it could be glycogen and starch.. but then since glycogen is more water soluble, that could be it? Or am I wrong ? I would highly appreciate any help I get. Got a test tomorrow and I'm confused about this.

I have a question regarding uncertainties as I don't really know how to find them. I have a question referring to grams of a substance and also mmHg, as in for blood pressure. So I would have 'g' for one unit. I would also have 'mmHg' for another unit. But what would be the uncertainty value for this or is there even any...? Thanks for any help offered. Note: I am doing a practice lab and just stating my units in the beginning. So the uncertainties would be +/- (whatever it is). I currently have mine set to both +/- 1 but I don't know if it is correct.

Hey Guys! I am going to choose my IB classes next semester and I am preparing for it now. I want to study genetics as my major, so I am considering double science. Biology is a "for sure" HL to take, and I am struggling to choose between Chemistry and Physics. Is it better to choose Chemistry? Because I saw that a required class for genetic in the university is biochemistry. But then I saw in the second year, we still need to take physics. I personally have much better score in physics and is much passionate in it comparing to Chemistry. Plus our physics teacher is so much better than our Chemistry teacher. So is it ok if I take Physics + Biology?

I have had hits and misses during tests, when the pictures i draw are not "realistic" enough in that I didn't draw the appropriate cells or shading the right things etc. and it's really confusing me

Hi, I will carry out my experiment next week but I need some advice on whether or not the 2 ideas I'm about to present are either good or bad? 1) Visual and Auditory learning modes (neurobiology). This experiment would investigate if some people have much better retention when information is presented visually rather than verbally or vice versa. And if presenting information both visually and verbally increase retention above either mode alone. I was thinking about testing the memory of a few people visually, verbally and in a combination of some list of vocabularies, then average the results and figure out which test field had the highest score, as well as figuring out…

Hi everyone So far, since I'm very interested in languages as well as Economics as well as Biology (I love them, actually), I've been trying to handle 4 HLs... English Language and Literature Vietnamese Literature Economics Biology As I've asked on this forum before... it's not a very good idea to study 4 HLs since universities don't really place emphasis on that and that I might get very stressed out, which is the last thing I want to experience. So I'm considering dropping either Biology or Vietnamese into SL. I've just received my semester report yesterday and it was better than I thought. I got 7 for English, 6 for Vietnamese, 7 for Economics …
