Hi, Today my bio teacher asked the muslim students in the class if they are allowed to touch pigs blood and if they have any objections about dissecting a pig, but he didn't ask anyone else. I don't think I could dissect a pig and still feel good about my self. So my question is: Do we have to participate in the dissection? Does the syllabus say anything about this? I will probably participate if I have to, but I would really like not to.

We have IA RQs due on Thursday and I want to investigate the effect of a factor on either plant growth or memory. With plant growth, I'll measure biomass; memory will consist of remembering words and their location on a page. Which is better, IBSurvival? Thank you

I am starting to think of bio ia topics, and my next one has to be about the human body (enzymes or people). I want to test heart rate, reaction time, or something similar on people. My teacher told me that my controls have to be really specific. I'm completely lost on how I could control factors like the subject's athletic ability. Any ideas? Thanks!

I am looking into purchasing a couple of books to help me with studying for IB Bio HL. I've been looking through amazon and noticed that a lot of books weren't published in 2014. I was wondering how much the syllabus has changed since 2012 and if anyone had good recommendations of IB study guides that they're currently using. Thanks in advance!

Hi guys, for my IA, I have decided to investigate how clay soil, silt soil, and pure fertilizer can affect the rate of growth of a regular bean plant. The thing is, I'm really not sure if this is a good topic? Does this count as only changing 1 variable (soil)? My teacher Okayed the topic, but I'm having second thoughts. I'm planning to plant a total of 20 seeds, with different soils for every 5 pots. (So 5 pots clay, 5 pots silt, 5 fertilizer, and 5 regular garden soil) I'm confused as to how I should form my hypothesis also! thanks

Hey, I am studying Biology HL and i think it is extremely difficult !!! I did study really hard but I just don't know how to study effectively ......... I don't have a clue what do i need to know for the biology. Some stuffs in my test are not even in my book.( I am using the oxford biology book.) The 2014 syllabus really confuses me , it is not clear !! . I tried to find some awesome websites for biology but they are usually for the previous syllabus. I really don't know what to do. Do you know any website for studying biology? Any input will be appreciated !

Hi guys, I am wondering if a t-test is necessary to include in my IA? I have done another IA before and did not include a T-test. I am trying to measure the rate of growth of a plant. I am already calculating standard deviation and averages in my processed data. I'm not really sure what the purpose of a t-test is, which is why I'm hesitant to include in my IA. I know that standard deviation just calculates how much a number deviates from the mean right? Also, is APA the citation style to use in bio IA? Thank you so much!

How did everyone else find Paper 1 and Paper 2 for the November examinations? Personally, I struggled a little in Paper 1 but felt Paper 2 went much better (if they can read my handwriting). I chose questions 2 and 3 for Paper 2.

I'm really overwhelmed by the tremendous amount of information in the textbook. I'm not good at memorizing stuff so most of the time I just choose the most obvious and seemingly important ones to memorize. Is it essential to memorize all the things for the final exam in May?

For standard deviation, are you supposed to just use +/- 1 stdev or a specific standard deviation for every value in a bar and line graph? also, do you need a line of best fit in a bar graph? thank you!

I was doing a biology lab and looked at my older brother's lab from 2 years ago, i used the same question as he did but did my own research and data collection as well as my own knowledge for the lab but not for the research question. I feel like I should fail, is this cheating?

Are labs checked for plagiarism? Do I need to put it through turnitin like other subjects? If the data is shared by two people because they did an experiment together, does that constitute as plagiarism?

My teacher says spindle fibers grow from centrioles. My book said they grew from Microtubule Organizing Centers (MTOCs). While looking for the difference between the two, I came across the term 'centrosomes'. I can't seem to understand the difference between these terms, can someone help me? Also, I'm dong the 2016 syllabus. (Just saying in case it would affect the answer in any way, although I don't see any mention of it in the syllabus.)

Hi, I was wondering if anyone has any summarised notes on any biology chapter as it would be super useful for revising for frequent tests due to the book being evasive at times. Also, are there any websites I can use which would give me exam questions and answers with clear explanations? Thank you in advance

If someone could please explain the process of how to calculate magnification given scale bars, that would be greatly appreciated! For instance, the length of a scale bar given is 2 micrometres. When I actually measure the length of the bar, it comes to 1.8 cm. The answer is X 8500. How would I receive this answer?

Hey guys, So, my exams were in May 2014 and I did pass but my grade in Biology is 3. I only needed 2 more points to score a 4, therefore I paid the IBO to remark the exams and guess what? no change in grades!!! so I decided to retake the exam in the upcoming november exams 2014. My teacher and I were confused about my grade! Anyways, I want to ask you is it possible to get a 5-6 or maybe 7 in Biology if my IAs are 5 ? I also heard some rumours that the november session is much harder than the one in may, is it true? If so, would the IB change their grade boundaries? I wish you a warm evening Mostafa,

If I am asked to list the functions of life carried out by all organisms (including unicellular organisms like Paramecium and Chlorella), would the tasks of the 7 functions be the same in all cells? For example, if I know that most metabolic pathways happen in the cytoplasm in Chlorella, is that fact apparent for all cells? Also, just to clarify, are prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells greater than plant and animal cells? For example, can a prokaryotic cell further specialize into a plant cell? Or are prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells completely different than plant and animal cells? Thank you.

In the DCP section of Biology IAs, when the raw data collected has no decimal places (eg. 5 leaves), but your average becomes 4.5 leaves...are you meant to round it up to 5 leaves then to maintain zero decimal places? Also, when doing statistical tests, one of the values I got was 0.004 - which has 3 decimal places. However, if you round it to the nearest whole number, you get 0 which isn't very meaningful. I know in physics/chem, you can use scientific notation or maintain the significant figures but I don't think it's going to work for me having my data in scientific notation (like 5 x 10^0 leaves?) Could someone please help? Thanks!

Hey guys, I pretty much failed my experiment and have nothing to write about. I essentially tested the effect of different salt water solution concentrations on the growth of radish seeds. Unknowingly, I made the concentrations waaay too high (1%, 2%, 3%, 4%.. seriously, I made it more salty than ocean water ) and all of my seeds, except my control, failed to germinate. In the past I've had experiments that have sorta failed and it's actually made it easier to write the conclusion, but this time I feel like it's not even possible to write up anything from this lab. I don't have time to redo this experiment or attempt another one as this experiment is actually…

So my IA involves making up saline solutions. I took 10.0mL of water and dissolved different amounts of salt grains into it, to make up different solutions, as it was my independent variable. The uncertainty for this is confusing me however. I originally was using salt concentration by weight as a percentage. What I mean by this is for example I added 0.025g of salt to 10.00mL of water, then labelled this as having 0.25% salt. I'm not sure if this is correct, and if it is, how to record the uncertainty associated with it. So I've been thinking, what if I recorded my independent variable as concentration instead of as a percentage. The concentration of salt would be 0.…

Hello! I'm writing my report on the influence of colour of light on the growth of Garden cress (Lepidium sativum). I'm investigating four colours: red, blue, green and yellow. I just recently purchased the Biology (Study Guide) by Andrew Allott, However I did not realise that the book was designed around the 2007 syllabus of Biology. Can i still use this book even though i'm giving the 2015 exam ? Has the syllabus changed all that much ? Another question I have is regarding the attachment. Is this the correct syllabus for Biology HL ? IB_Biology_Syllabus_2_2.pdf

Hi there, im entering IB DP next year and I just received my Bio textbook (Biology - Course Companion. Oxford University Press) by Andrew Allot and David Mindroff. Ive noticed that the content in this textbook is somewhat different than some other textbooks i have seen, notably the Cambridge Bio textbook. For example it doesnt have the statistical analysis section on error bars and stuff. Is this because the syllabus is changing or is that something our teachers will teach us without the textbook? And where can i access the Bio HL syllabus for 2014-2016? Thank you!

Hi guys. I have a question about my IA. While listing all the materials needed for my experiment I wrote that the uncertainty of the stopwatch is ± 0.1 s. But than I calculated the rate in ml/min. Is it ok that the units of the uncertainty of the stopwatch are seconds and the rate is calculated in ml/min? should it be ml/s? Does it even matter?
