Hi, I'm not sure where to put this (I'm not sure of anything anymore) or if there's a thread similar to this. Remove/move as necessary. I am in desperate need of exam technique advice since I keep hearing different things from different people. My Psychology essays are getting an average of 18 out of 22, but my history essays are getting 5s, and I need a 6 if I'm going to go to Manchester. My psych teacher tells us that we should do our essays like this: "write a line (leave a line) write a line (leave a line)" to make it look neater if we suddenly need to add something we didn't think of before/didn't plan. I understand that there are problems, but I find it easier to w…

Hi Guys Preparing for choosing my subjects in the IB, and I thought that I would choose HL History, mainly because none of the other group 3 subjects interest me, and I am currently doing well at, and enjoying, HIstory at my school. I was just wondering, what does HL History entail? I hear people talk about the Internal Assessment, and with the exams how you have to choose a region to study.... I am a bit confused. It would be much appreciated if someone could just give me a bit of a rundown on HL History. Thanks

I keep changing my IA topic and now I'm thinking of asking "Were the Salem witch trials planned by Abigail Williams for personal retribution?" There seems to be evidence that points toward this but I'm not sure how many books there will be on it. I'm also not sure if it's just too commonly accepted that she believed she was actually bewitched, which disproves my argument. My original questions was "How politically effective was the Tongzhi Restoration of China compared to the Meiji Restoration of Japan?" but my teacher said that this was too vague and to only focus on one restoration. I want to do the Tongzhi Restoration, but I'm not sure where to go with it (which is w…

Hello guys! I still have nearly a year before I have to submit my IA but I want to prepare as soon as possible because it will save precious time for later so I have prepared some topics but again I'm having trouble deciding...These are my topics so far: 1) A study of why the United States became involved in Vietnam. 2) How successful were the Soviet Five Year Plans? 3) To what extent was the Tet Offensive central to the success of the Vietnam's People's Army? 4) Assess the role of media and propaganda in two of the wars in the 20th century. 6) How did economical resource prove to be vital in both WWI and WWII? 7) To what extent was the seizure of power in Russia in Octo…

Okay I already have my research question :To what extent did Rosie the Rivetor represent American woman during World War II? The problem that Im having is deciding what exactly to focus on or what path to take. I know the history behind it and how she was created to encourage women to work but I know i need more than that. I was thinkin of perhaps providing examples of women who are thought to represent the ideal "rosie". I find that in a lot of the books I have they always mention a woman and how she demonstrated characeristics of "rosie". Im not sure if that's good enough or if i need more than examples????

I will be comparing the novel with a history textbook. Is this topic ok or should I do another one becasue my history teacher was like comparing with a fictional work is not advisable. I am not sure what to do. I have another topic in mind and have worked on it too. This topic is somtheing along the lines of was the Cold War merely interrupted by the Second World War? So, my school has now idea what it's doing with IB. They keep changing the rules about how we have to do everything (I'm half-convinced they're going to make "four legs good, two legs better" a rule next year) and now my History IA is due tomorrow and I'm confused about the internal citations format. My topic has to due with American Cold War policies, so I have a lot of government documents and I'm not sure how to parenthetically cite them. For example, I use the Atlantic Charter, but it feels stupid saying "In 1941, the Atlantic Charter laid out ideals for ending the conflicts and restoring liberty to the post-War world (The Atlantic Charter)." I also have, for example,…

I am supposed to have a topic / research question by the end of this week. So far i have narrowed it down to four : to what extent did U.S involvement affect the outcome of the Mexican Revolution? to what extent did the Chinese involvement affect the outcome of the Korean War? To what extent did Lysenko-ism play a significant role in the creation and existence of Soviet Russia / (or communist china)? to what extent did the capaci massacre of Sicily encourage the expansion of crime organized by the Sicilian Mafia? Personally, i'm leaning towards Sicilian mafia, since it is a topic that intrigues me. But the first question, with the Mexican revolution would have a LOT o…

Hey, this might be kind of stupid to post, but I'm really worried about History. It used to be one of my strong subjects, but IB kinda took that away from me. Even though i know my stuff I don't get good grades, so the problem basically lies in how I answer the questions. Our teacher doesn't seem to find it important to teach that to us, but my analysis and essay skills do not seem to be very good according to the grades I get. People always tell me to go in depth on the question, but I'm not sure how to do that. I would be really grateful if someone could help me out here, because I'm pretty sure I can do it I just have to figure out how to answer it according to IB crit…

Hi, For my IA, I decided to do the topic of "propaganda during the Cultural Revolution". I was thinking of this for my question: "To what extent did propaganda play during the Cultural Revolution?" However, I found this to be quite weak. What would be a better question to have so I can have a clear conclusion in the end? I don't think there's no way to measure the "extent" per se, because the "extent" cannot be clearly measured because there is nothing to be compared to. If you think that my whole IA topic sounds unpromising, please give me advice on what to change it to. Since I already took down notes on the Cultural Revolution, anything related to it would be fine. …

Hi, I did my IA on the question from the syllabus, the one about Dresden... Putting the exact words, the question is: Why, and with what consequences to its citizens, was Dresden bombed in 1945? 1) Does copying the question from the syllabus counts as a plagiarism? My teacher told me that it is and I have to craft the question somehow... 2) Can I change the question to something like: Why did the allied bombed on Dresden in 1945? Is there any problem with the question? 3) Or since my 2 sources chosen are arguing different sides (1. Dresden was bombed because it was significant to allies and essential to win the war 2. Dresden was bombed in order to create fear), can I cra…

I was just wondering if there are any other schools that also assign TWO Historical Investigations to their History HL students, instead of just one. I finished my first one last December but was (unpleasantly!) surprised today when I was assigned another one! Are there any other schools out there that also have to do TWO Historical Investigations for History HL students (or SL too maybe)? If so, why is this? Cheers and take care all.

For example, my first thought was to write something about what "price they had to pay" in order to stay out of the war. But that feels sort of obvious too. Does anybody have any good ideas? Hello, I've got a question to my topic. I want to write about an ancient culture and chose the Mayas. Here I have several possibilieties, like the hierarchy in the population or rituals, but I think the mortuary practices nad the imagination of the life after dead are really interesting. Therefore my topic should be something like: "How did the imagination of Mayas about Xibalba (realm of the death) changes from countriefied regions to mountains?" But I am sure that there must be a better formulation of the topic, but do you think it fits in the IB context? Anyway, with a question like "Analyze the reasons for Germany's defeat in World War I," is it appropriate to challenge the assumption of the question? I have the information given out from IB, and a few examples, but that really isn't much help. I know that were supposed to analyze in Section D of what we put in Section B, but how do we not reiterate too much? Would more analysis solve that problem.
