Hey everyone, So after a few setbacks with IA topics I decided I should probably get a move on with it because this has been going down and down my priorities list... ANYWAY, is this a suitable topic for an IA? I'm not sure how broad/focused it should be, that's all. To what extent was detente successful for the goals of the USA? Wow it seems really broad, but from what I've seen the History IA tends to be broader than History EEs Also is this a really overdone topic? OR is this better: To what extent was detente a direct result of the Cuban Missile Crisis? Thanks in advance for any feedback!

Hey Everybody, One of the things I was struggling with in my Essays was the inclusions of historians. I adjusted and starting doing extra reading to incorporate historians into my essay. But now my teacher wants evaluation of our sources within the essay, and he said schools of thought really shows a strong depth of understanding. My question is: How do you find a historian's school of though? For an essay on Germany, I used a quote from historian from Ute Frewert, but I had no one idea what school of thought she fell into. Any advice, on finding the schools of thought that these historian's belong to???

(NOT HI) To what extent do you agree or disagree with these statements: 1. The period of reconstruction in the U.S. was a success. 2. What was the Import Substitution Industrialization and how did it benefit Latin America during the Depression. I have to write an essay tomorrow on one of these two. I am terrible at remembering facts. Is there anything you suggest would be MOST IMPORTANT to include in my writing? Thank you!

History exam...?

So I feel very stupid for asking this, but I just need to get it right. I'm in the first year of IB doing history SL. What I'm wondering is, how do the exam work? I know there's paper 1 which I heard is one essay and then paper 2 which I heard are two essays. But how much time do we have on each? Is paper 1 the prescribed topic? Can anyone tell me what paper 2 is about then? I pay attention in history, read a lot, and take notes all the time, but I don't understand when or what we're supposed to have on the exam. And I can't ask the teacher because he is so unorganised, I barely get what he is talking about ... So please, fellow IBers, help me! x3

-from the IB History Guide In the History Guide, the assessment portion says we must study specifically 3 topics from our given option, and we must answer three questions on Paper 3. Is it a requirement that we answer one question from 3 different topics, or can more than one question from a given topic be answered? I know there are only 2 questions per topic anyways. For example, if I'm studying History of the Americas, and I studied Topic 1: Independence Movements, Topic 3: US Civil War, and Topic 6: Mexican Revolution, would it be possible to answer two questions on Topic 3, and one question from Topic 6 on the exam? Or does one question from 3 different subjects nee…

Previous years, history paper 1 was about Stalin's rise to power. This year it's probably going to be something else, maybe treaties and post-war agreements. Does any of you have good notes on that kind of stuff? I know I'm bad with those things, so some help would be terrific! Thanks!

Hi guys! For those who are doing the theme "The USSR and Europe 1924-2000" what do you think would come up this year? Interwar period and European diplomacy is not as scary as the time scope is much more limited. This one you can basically get anything from Stalin's rise to power (1924-1928 but unlikely cause this can already be in paper 2) to Yeltsin in 2000... November 2011 had two questions: - Compare and contrast foreign policy of Brezhnev and Khruschev. - Cult of personality of Stalin. What do you think would come up this year?

Okay I have my paper 1 and paper 2 history tomorrow, and I have yet to study, I would like to know, is it best to simply study the possible topics of paper 1 and recycle that theme as one of the topics for paper 2 as well as studying another topic or should I just re-read a general overview of my grade 11 curriculum. I also have to study for Physics paper 3 >.> Basically if I study the possibilities for history paper 1 tommorow (Gorbechev/ Mao Zedong's death and the change in direction of CCP), then I'll guarentee a better mark on paper 1, do you think it will be likely that I'll be able to reuse one of those topics for paper 2 essays?

Hello, I have a question. I am gong to have a history exam tomorrow. I am on higher level so that we have some options but I would like to ask to be extremely sure which topics could appear tomorrow. Our teacher chose route two so the 20th century world history. From these we have topic 1: "Causes, practices and effects of the wars" and topic 3: "Origins and development of authoritarian and single-party states". Does anyone know or have history guide/syllabus and could give me an advice which material for the detailed study according to this new syllabus is compulsory? (as we heard that his changed some time ago)? I know that Hitler and World War I and II can appear. What…

Okay, just a fast question. What does the IB mean by "regions"? Or, more specifically, I have been looking at some past questions for the Cold War and the Single-Party States, and many questions ask that you discuss at least two countries from two different regions. What does this mean exactly? For instance, I would be inclined to discuss the rules of Stalin and Hitler, because these are the ones I know best, but are Germany and Russia in the same "region"? Any help is appreciated.

Hi, I have made a set of 22 self-contained podcasts for IB history: www.historypodcast.net They cover topics such as the rise into power of Hitler, Stalin, Mao, and Castro, World War I, World War II, the Cold War, the Spanish Civil War and the Vietnam War. Some episodes explore how technology and strategy have changed modern warfare. Others tackle the sometimes difficult task of historiography. I have tried to make them fast-paced, evidence-packed, self-contained episodes of 20th Century historical events, so that with 20 min. of concentrated listening, you should have enough historical knowledge to cover a topic (no guarantees!) Try them out, they are FREE! Good luck w…

My teacher said that if there's a question where you have to consider two wars, it's okay to answer about WW2 in the west and the east; this is true, right? Also, if I wanted to answer that kind of a question by using e.g. WW1 and WW2, then would I have to choose which "part" of WW2 to consider and would I lose points for talking about both the war in Europe and pacific as well as WW1?

So a lot of people on this board have mentioned the need to analyze and incorporating critical commentaries of important events/dictatorships in the paper 2 and 3 essays. Some have also suggested challenging the question and introducing multiple interpretations of historical events, as well as different historical perspectives and historians. I was wondering if anyone could give me pointers as to how analysis of historical events/perspectives is done. Is it similar to the IA? I've just been memorizing information as of now, and I guess that wasn't the right approach to get a 6 or 7. Thanks.

I've been looking at exam tips and such on the forum and everyone mentions that we need to know different historians and such. I've got really good knowledge of the actual history, but our teacher never even mentioned any historians nor the fact that we need to know them. I've got a predicted 6/7 without any knowledge of them... How important is this?

This is incredibly vague, but I was wondering if anyone had any list of the general topics one would need to study to score high. I really have no idea what to study and my teacher smartly says, "everything!" every time I ask her. Specifically, I would like to look at topics that typically appear on paper 2s, because I know there are different questions under different categories. I'm just so confused/lost because there's no way I'll be able to memorize everything from my teacher's unorganized notes. Thanks!

Yesterday, I got my latest history test back. Considering the amount of time I put into studying for it, I expected to do better. I know that I did some really unnecessary mistakes because I was stressed during the test, but the real problem is that I don't really know exactly how I should put together my answers to score on the 20 point questions (those when you have to analyze things from a broader perspective or whatever ). I've come to realize that I spend too much time on learning irrelevant facts that most certainly will not be on the test. Do you guys have any tips on what you should think about while studying history to get the "bigger picture"? Have a nice d…

I know there've been topics about history reading material before, but I've got a specific question on IB Companion textbooks. The two main textbooks I can find for IB History of Europe and the Middle East are the 20th Century World History Course Companion (This yellow one) and the History of Europe and the Middle East. (Blue text) Have any of you used/read these textbooks, and were they any use? And is it too late for me to even bother buying one for such a price (even if I can resell it) when the exam is on the 11th?

Hi everyone, So basically we are doing our Paper 1 right now. The topic is "Peacekeeping and Peacemaking: International Relations (1919-1936)". I love History and I am passionate about it. I have no idea what to write for the OPVL and I have been unable to get any external support. Please help! A few pointers would do a lot!

Hey, so I have some questions concerning the 4th (aka the mini essay) question on History P1. I'm still quite confused on how the answer should be structured and my history teacher is super unhelpful. Do I have to mention all of the sources in the question, or just some? Just how much of my own knowledge am I supposed to use in the essay? A model answer would be fantastic, but at this point I appreciate any good info on how to construct a good mini essay in order to score high points. Thanks in advance!

Any tips so I can link my answer more to the question?

So on the marking criteria it says students should write balanced and focused historical arguments for essays in Paper 3. Is this true for paper 1 and 2 as well? Or is paper 1 different? Also, what is a 'balanced' essay. Because surely if the question is 'to what extent...' you can't argue middle-ground every single time. It just wouldn't be good historical practise to say 'all the arguments for are...' and 'all the arguments against are...' and so my conclusion is 'somewhere in between'. In class I've always been told that it's good to have a strong argument and argue it throughout the whole essay. Is this not correct? Thanks

My teachers new and she thinks that your mark out of 25 on the IA is literal, meaning that 20/25 would mean you recieved an 80% on the IA and would have a high 4. I got 20/25 on the IA which should get me into schools I applied to by rising my mark but because she thinks its 80% it hurt my mark. Does anyone have the marking scheme from 2011 or 2012 which will show that a 20/25 is not a low 5 but a 6 or whatever it is?

Hello everyone! My Historical Investigation is coming along very well. My question is, " To what extent did the German Campaigns in the Balkans cost Adolf Hitler the Second World War?" I am on the part of evaluating my sources. I found an excerpt from when Adolf Hitler was in conversation with filmmaker Leni Riefenstahl, and it is him admitting that Italy essentially cost him the war. I thought that this would be a great primary document, however I can't find the exact place or meeting from which he actually said it. This is the excerpt: " Italy's entry into the war has been nothing but disaster for us. If the Italians hadn't attacked Greece and needed our help, the war…
