Right now I need to write my History IA and I am having a very hard time picking a topic to write on. My first idea was "What Were The Causes Of The Boston Massacre?" and I did about 5 hours of research on it and when I presented it to my teacher, she stated that I couldn't use that question let alone use the Boston Massacre at all because it wasn’t a narrow enough of a topic. I was really confused by that because I thought that my topic was narrow and sufficient for my IA. Now I really don’t know what to decide on for a topic. I really want to stay away from WWI and WWII because many people are doing that already. Can anyone suggest a topic for me to write on?

Is anybody else doing their History IA on Canada? It feels like I'm the only one in this boat. Any help on the economic policies of Bennett and Mackenzie would be great, too.

I researched about the definitions of right wing and left wing but I'm still very confused as to how you would determine whether rulers like Stalin/Mussolini/Hitler are left wing or right? Thanks!!! I'm sorry if this is a dumb question to be asking.

Hi. I need help in choosing my historical investigation topic. I want to write about Magellan's expedition of 1519-1522. I just don't what exactly should i focus on. I was thinking of assessing the importance of that expedition to the development of geography or something, or maybe to spanish people. I am really lost. If anyone could help me, I would highly appreciate it. I took history HL but I am not really in posses of HL knowledge. However, when I have all the info, I'm quite good I got only 7s for my essays so far :D Thanx.

Here is a topic that our class got for 1500~2000 words long essay: "Analyse the circumstances that allowed Lenin and the Bolsheviks to come to power and establish a single-party state." Can anyone help me out with how to start on this? We are required to have at least three published sources (articles, books, etc.) and one online.

Alright, so originally, my topic was "How did the Hippie Movement affect the reception of the Vietnam War?" Unfortunately, she shot that down in a heartbeat. And our rough drafts are due in two weeks. now I have to scrap my paper and start over. I know I'd still like to stay within the general time span of the 60's and 70's, but I don't know where to go from here. If possible, I'd like to keep the Hippie Movement as well. Any ideas?

My teacher isn't the most helpful person, and an old copy of an HI didn't quite help either. So, my question is.. How do you write a plan of investigation? Is it what you're going to investigate? and How would you go about it? Are there specific criteria that must be met?

Please help me out guys! Let me introduce myself, I have done PYP and MYP and I am on my senior year, in a different school taking the IB...so here's the problem I'm facing. We wrote our IA's last year to have more wiggle room senior year. After turning in my paper, my teacher told me, after having gone over my topic and question many times, that it was not history oriented enough. But I made it clear to him how it is because well, I'll explain in a moment. Here is my question: How Significant Was Theodor Geisel’s Children’s Book The Lorax to the Environmental Movement? In my Plan of Investigation, I explicitly state that the investigation focuses on the significance of …

So I wanted to do Franco's role in the rivalry between Catalans and mainstream Spanish (and tie it into Barcelona vs Real Madrid hehehe) but my teacher shot it down....so I had to come up with a new one in one night lol! To what extent did the increasing tensions within the Popular Front government during the Spanish Civil War lead to the Republican defeat? I'm not sure if this topic is overdone or whatnot. We're definitely not learning about the Spanish Civil War but the war itself has always interested me. So far it's a very basic topic and will get more specific once I have more research, but is it okay for now?

So my teacher told me I should investigate the accurate portrayal of Stalin in Animal Farm but reading other posts, it seems it is not advisable? I handed in a draft which I think is okay, getting the results back on Sunday. However, I really want at least a 6 or 7 and want to know if I can with that topic or if it is not history based enough? Please give me advice!!

Hi. This is my first time doing an IA and I chose to have my topic be about the Holodomor. At first I chose to have the topic be, "What was the greatest contribution to the Holodomor?" But my teacher said it was too broad. Now I don't know what my topic question should be. I was thinking it could be something like, "Is the Holodomore a Genocide?" Or "Did Stalin specifically target Ukraine during the Holodomor?"

I wasn't entirely sure where this should go but anyways So, to my knowledge in IB it is extremely important to get your referencing right. However, does every single thing that is not your own opinion have to be referenced? I know that well-known dates and such can be not, but what about e.g. a statement such as "this historian, who has written several publications on the cold war, says..." (and then a quote which of course would be referenced) etc? Or other kind of general information like that, such as if someone's a political scientist, is acclaimed for his works, has won the nobel/pulitzer/whatever price, is known to have rightist/leftist viewpoints or stuff like that…

Well I was looking into a sort of course companion for my 20th century IB World History SL class because our teacher teaches in a very unconventional manner ( by telling stories and packets and worksheets) and I personally dont retain information that way since Im more of a structured person. Whats a great book for the 20th Century World SL communism path?

The Canadian Caper: What were its effects on Cold War relations of the United States and Canada as well as international relations with Iran? I feel relations might be too broad of a word, but I can't think of how else to state it. Any advice on that, or anything else in general I should be concerned about? I had wanted to analyze the international relations with the middle east as a whole before a friend of mine pointed out that this would be way too broad, so I figured I would just focus on Iran but also mention other middle eastern countries for support. I originally was just going to do the Iran Hostage Crisis and Jimmy Carter's handling of it and such, but then tho…

So after starting with about ten possible questions, I'm very happy to now have only two to decide between... but I just can't. So, between the following, which would you recommend doing? 1. What caused the end of the Cold War, and how does the debate over credit between the US and USSR effect the way the war is viewed today? 2. To what extent did Gorbachev's reforms bring about the internal collapse of the USSR? (focusing primarily on Glasnost and Perestroika) If you have input on how to refine the questions, I'd love to hear it. Also, I was wondering whether or not you think these have been over-done. I love the topics, but at the same time I don't want to do something …

Hello. I'm a rising Junior, and I want to ask you few questions: 1) Will the World History SL IA topic be given by the IB HQ or the teacher or our choice? 2) How do you exactly study history? Just plain memorization? Or any other techniques that you can recommend me? (I go by plain memorization, but that's time consuming.) 3) What should I do to make sure I can get A on History and 6 or 7 on the IB exam? Thanks in advance.

I am taking History of the Americas HL, but our class get a teacher who is unwilling to share the marking scheme and the essay criteria with the class (for some weird reasons). It seems like there are not much resources out there for the americas curriculum. I am not sure where points are given for answers in paper 1, nor how I am gonna structure and articulate my essay in paper 2 and 3. All in all, what am I expected to do? Insight and suggestion are needed urgently!

Hello! I have a problem that really troubles me in history; I don't seem able to write good essays. I have of course talked to my teacher about it, but I did not really get anything out of it; and I haven't gotten anything out of advise from other people either. My problem seem to be structuring, which really bothers me since I always do really good on structuring essays in other subject (Eng, Swe, Psy). Also, my teacher tells me that my essays are too narrative (due to chronology perhaps). I never get above a 5 in history, and since it is my HL I should get a 6 or 7. Thus, my simple question is: how do I alter my essays so that they become less narrative and better struc…

Hello Survivors!! I am in the middle of my History IA and I suddenly realise that it's quite hard to find sources to support my argument and somehow hard to write with. Hi all, I am starting IB this September and I was wondering about taking History SL as the 7th subject. How hard is that? I am pretty much into 19th and 20th century and so I think it would not be so bad to me. What does the final exam consist of? My subjects are HL- English B, Economics, Math and SL - German B, Slovak A1, Physics. Do you think that it would be too much to take this extra one?

So I have spent my whole eleventh year playing around with HI topic ideas and I finally settled on German architecture during the Third Reich and how it was used to subliminally promote the Nazi ideals (i.e.: the governmental buildings were built to be huge and imposing to intimidate while other buildings looked a lot like traditional rural German-style buildings to promote "the common man"). When I told my idea to my History teacher he said he liked it but I needed to narrow it down so I decided to focus on Albert Speer, who was Hitler's chief architect of the time. However, then we went on summer vacation and the other History teacher (who is the main IB History lady in…

I'm in the research phase of writing my EE in history. I have no problem finding secondary sources for my topic (Spanish Civil War) through the internet and the local library, but I am having problems finding primary documents. Does anyone know of any databases, sites, etc. that actually contain good primary sources? I've tried several by googling but they don't have much. Thanks! P.S. not sure if this falls under history or EE but I put it in history because it's history-related.

I just finished 2 years of pre-IB at Michael Power in Canada. Starting IB in the fall. Have to take History HL. I know from the syllabus that we have to take 1 prescribed subject, 2 20th century history topics, one regional option, and do a historical investigation. Just wondering if they stay the same every year at any specific school or do they change? Plus... wondering if anyone knows what they are at Michael Power. Wouldn't mind doing some light reading this summer, but not sure on what. Thanks, Jim

IA Trying to find a topic

Good morning or evening or whatever it is where you are. Anyway, so I've been given the task of coming up with an topic/question for my History IA. The thing is my teacher wants us to link it with our local area (Isle of Dogs, London although linking it to London should be fine) but that really is a minor problem. It doesn't have to be on the local area, just linked to the local area somehow. The problem is I don't have much knowledge or interest in too many events that have happened here. As I'm into Philosophy, my teacher suggested I perhaps look into a specific school of thought or philosophical idea and link it back to my area which I'm fine with doing. I found a list…

My first post as a member woo Hope I'm doing this right...Anyway, as the title mentions, I need a little guidance with my History HL course. I've just finished my mocks for my first year of the IB and through all the crammed revision realised the breadth of the subject. The problem I have though is that unlike most others in my class, I haven't studied at GCSE and as a learner/budding philosopher, I'm not much of a small details person. Now, as anyone here should know, a lot of well, all history essays require facts, dates and really specific details which leads to my first problem. I am terrible at learning numbers like dates and the number of deaths. I've tried but e…

Hi this is my first post on Ibsurvival so I really don't know how this works but, I was just wondering if anyone could give me their opinion of my topic: How did the treaty of new echota lead to the expulsion of the Cherokee from the south? I think we're all aware of how this question goes, usually something like "Using the sources and your own knowledge...." It's in the question itself, so obviously, using your own knowledge from different sources is important. I usually use my knowledge on specific treaties and events, but I have never actually used "specific" information, like the specific numbers I use for Paper 2, because, other than those on the economic situation, I feel like there aren't many. And I also don't tend to use historiography for that part, or at least it isn't a priority to me because it isn't specifically mentioned in the mark scheme. Am I doing it wrong? Should I do otherwise? What's yo…

Hello all! I'm almost finished writing a research paper that is sort of serving as a pre-cursor to the History Investigation we will be doing next year. I am examining the leadership of Joseph Stalin and Adolf Hitler during World War II (comparing and contrasting) and whether there was any merit to either of their regimes. Alrighty then, I am writing my History IA on a relatively recent topic (The influence of the 1980 Olympic hockey games upon American morale during the Cold War). One of my teachers suggested inserting helpful and interesting pictures of the games. This is our school's first year teaching IB, and I'm mildly concerned that this teacher has no idea what he's talking about. Are images allowed in an IA? Or is it strictly text?
