Resources on Mao

Hi, I'm currently revising Mao and looking back at my notes, it seems I have little information on him (probably because of my terrible history teacher) My new teacher has given us textbooks on Mao but its pretty rubbish at telling you the important things. Thus I was wondering whether any of you have any websites/resources where I could find some information on Mao (his rise, domestic and foreign policies etc.) Thanks

Hey! As you know we have 1 hour to answer the 4 questions in paper 1 (or 5, it depends how you see it). I am slow when writing exams. When I had mock exams, I barely had time to finish Paper 1. I didn't answer the last question with enough depth and I had 4/8 marks in that question. What is your advice for time management in paper 1? How much time should be dedicated to each question?

Hi I'm just Interested. We have studied Hitler, Stalin and Mao Ze Dong. Will I do well on Paper 2 if I really Focus only on Stalin and Mao? For the wars, I'm thinking of focusing on Algerian War, WW1, Gulf-War and Falklands war. would that also be enough? Thanks

Are IA topics about the Korean War too overdone? Originally, I was going to do an ia topic about what was the primary cause that led to the fall of the Joseon Dynasty in Korea; however, I'm having slightly a hard time attempting to find books at my library about this topic, and I was debating about switching my question to something that still interests me and would be a tad easier to find.

Hi! I'm about to start writing my historical investigation and I've chosen to focus on the Cuban Missile Crisis (we've had it in class) . I desperately need help to find an essay question I've thought about something along the lines of: What consequences did the Cuban Missile Crisis have on the USA's foreign policy? <- I imagine this is the most overdone topic EVER, but I seriously cannot think of anything else, and I'd prefer to write about something that I can use later (We've read about the Cold War (you know, the fancy purplish book)) So do any of you have any good suggestion or how you could alternate the question to be narrower? Laura

Good day fellow IB students The may IB exams are on the door and I really need advice on how to study for my history exams. I have both OSC revision guides (for p1 peacekeeping, and p2 single part and cold war resp) and the actual "course literature", which is based on A-levels more than IB and contains plenty of unnecessary information, so i was wondering, is it enough reading through the OSC guides or not, given that I have already read all the course literature required during the previous 2 years as a part of "before class preparations". Please give me advice

So I hit a rock with my IA. I can't find crap on the "Phoenix operation" In vietnam that can be used, nor can I think of a decent question. Can't find any books at my local college, nor any journals or such on JSTOR which is quite the shame. My Section B and C are all due next week (See, my history teacher is the devil which is why I'm having so much trouble with this. She didn't say my original question would work until two days before the section A was do which is why I'm so stuck because I've been scrambling. I thought this counterinsurgency operation known as the phoenix program would be good so I told her, and now I'm stuck. What I REALLY want to look at is the CIA a…

Hello, I'm in IB-1 and studying History HL at the moment. I find History quite difficult in the aspect of writing essays. Its quite difficult for me to distill down all the information. While I do it thematically, I haven't had much success with it. I've narrowed down the problem to the lack of familiarity with the content. I'm having trouble studying and making notes with the subject. The problem is that there is too much information in the textbooks, so its difficult to predict essay questions. Do you guys study and make notes thematically, chronologically, or...?

Hey guys. I am just looking for feedback on my current question to see if it is specific enough to score well. "To what extent did the increase in illegal immigration from Mexico to the US during the 1990s contribute to the rise of Carlos Slim Helu?" Additionally, I am from the US, and I am having trouble finding books about him. I know for a fact that there are tons out there, but I cant find any. Do you guys have any suggestions on what I should use to research? Thanks a bunch!

Hey everyone, So the title is pretty self-explanatory, I'd like some advice on my HI. I'd mainly like to know if my topic is suitable. I was looking for something where there are two distinct sides, and two ways of looking at it, and we did this in class and I got interested, because obviously the Bolsheviks say they weren't involved, yet others say they were. So yeah, is this a do-able topic? If not, could you suggest any improvements? EDIT: Also, I just found out TODAY that this is incredibly similar, if not exactly the same as, a topic that a guy in the year above me did. Should I avoid it now? Because I know that my teacher signs the whole authenticity thing, to say t…

So... for my mocks we got May 2011... However, this year our coordinator decided to choose what to give us for mocks instead of our History teacher (she just assumed it would be Nov 2011)... What our coordinator didn't know was that we had already practiced the May 2011 exam entirely! So, when we saw May 2011 on our mocks we thought "This is going to be great!" ... yeah, it wasn't... The May 2011 topics that the coordinator had printed off were different from the ones we were given? They were only slightly different, but enough to change the entire point of the questions (on Paper 2 there was one questions that was "Analyze why collective security failed during the interw…

So, I've been thinking on doing my IA on Philippine History, on the dictator Ferdinand Marcos. I have some research questions in mind, but not sure if they're too broad or whatnot. I kind of need help in deciding and rewording them. :/ To what extent did Imelda Marcos contributed to the downfall of Ferdinand Marcos? OR to what extent was the Philippine martial law of 1972 based solely on power? OR In what ways did Ferdinand Marcos improved the lives of ordinary people during his regime? Imelda Marcos, is the wife of Ferdinand Marcos and some say that she contributed to the corruptions of the regime. So...I thought that was interesting. While some say that the martial law …

Hello everyone! I am writing my Historical Investigation and I am in need of some help/opinions. My question is: "To what extent did the German Campaigns in the Balkans cost Adolf Hitler the Second World War?" I have some research and a few sources, but am looking to add more. I've found some evidence to support my view, but if anyone had any suggestions/ points I could write or expand upon, that would be great! The main points I'm addressing so far are: - The fact that the German Campaigns in the Balkans delayed Operation Barbossa and depleted supplies ( militarily, but also the amount of forces prepared for the Russian Invasion) - Capture of the Balkans was unnec…

Okay, I know there's millions of these posts on here, but I just want to really narrow down my topic. So far, I have: To what extent did the economic and social changes brought on by the "Roaring Twenties" in America cause or influence the Great Depression? I'm doubting whether or not this topic is strong enough, or if there is enough information to write about. I really want to keep my topic relating to the Roaring Twenties though. Could anyone help criticize/tweak my topic?

I was wondernig what sources are valid to use? Can I include an interview with a family member? If not, can it be a supporting source, for facts in section B or sth? How do I put it into the bibliography then? Also, should the sources for OPVL differ? Must one be a book and another a speech or document? What sources dont you recommend using?

What I'm struggling with the most for my investigation is how to distinguish between summary of evidence (part B) and analysis (part D). Theoretically I know the difference (comments on other posts have been helpful) but I find myself repeating things I already stated in part B when I am writing my analysis because it's necessary to the flow of my argument. It feels too repetitive for comfort.

IA and the vietnam war (CIA)

Well now would you look at that. It's another IA question. I'm just basically stuck on making it narrower. What's worse is my teacher doesn't care that my topics keep getting rejected and I don't really know enough about the Vietnam war to create a decent question. I have all of these sources too including a fantastic primary source. My question is "How did the CIA policies effect the war in Vietnam?" Apparently that's too broad so I don't mind limiting it. But I really don't have any ideas on how to limit this question other then how they were responsible for the assination of some president or something. I wasn't entirely sure. Thoughts?

The topics I am interested in writing about are: -decolonisation of britian in cold war and the effects of it. -british/french relations with soviets in cold war -cambridge spies: to what extent were the cambridge spies successful...? and to what extent was the significance/value of the information gained by the cambridge spies? what do you think of these two questions? how can i narrow some of the topics? I don't alot about these two topics, but they seem to be interesting for me. I honestly don't know where to go from here, and my teacher doesn't know much as he is new to the IB program. any help would be greatly appreciated Thanks in advance!

Hello there, Firstly I'd just like to say, I'm pretty new to this site so please don't shoot me down too hard if I've posted this in the wrong place, or haven't seen a thread that already has this information, but I'm sort of panicking and need information quickly! What exactly should I put in my evaluation of sources? Should I include any information from the sources themselves? I'm using a document (the Marshall Plan speech) and a recent analytical/narrative book. My teachers keep telling us not to talk about "superficial evaluation", so I'm beginning to really wonder if what I've written is analytical or relevant enough! If someone could just give me points further tha…

For my history IA, I decided to investigate the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests in China. My current RQ is "To what extent were the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests counterproductive in leading to a more authoritarian government in the aftermath?" My teacher said it was confusing and I've started to think that my RQ is a sort of non-question, because the Tiananmen Square protests did lead to a stricter society. I'm thinking about changing it to "To what extent were the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests the cause of the government shift towards authoritarianism?" Any help/potential suggestions on how to formulate my RQ would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

No one in my class is getting 7s right now, and my teacher is new the IB so I want to check on some things. 1) When we write those 45min essays, how much are we supposed to write? I write about 3 pages, but this is having already known the essay topic before our practise exams so I have already prepared. I guess in the real thing, I'll need to plan for longer. 2) Do you give a balanced argument, or do we argue for one side and give evidence as to why we believe in that side? Again, my class is not sure. Our teacher has said that up until level 6, they want you to argue balanced, but for level 7 you need to have an argument. But if you write with an argument and miss the …

So I've been assigned a comparison paper on two Latin American independence movements. I have chosen the Brazilian and Mexican independence movements. Basically, the conceptual areas this paper needs to address are (not necessarily in this order): background information on the movement, causes which led to the movement (bit redundant there, but those are my teacher's words, not mine...), outcome of the movement, and which of the two revolutionary movements was most successful in terms of its original rationale and/or purpose. With this in mind, I was hoping to get some advice on the structuring of my paper. What do you think the most effective way to organize it? The pape…
