As my IB years are coming to an end, I am currently contemplating my experience. On most points, the IB curriculum is rigorous, yet flexible, and at least modestly intellectually demanding. The Histroy course, however, is truly a black hole. I take the Europe option. So what's wrong? 1. Narrow scope. At my school we study 100 years of Europe (about 1890-1990), Mao, and some Cold War (only here, some American history is really studied.) Also, we mainly study wars. This is an implicit choice. We do not study much of international cooperation, or the seemingly interesting topic of states and minorities. Focus lies on political and military history, and other important …

Hi all! I'm Emanuele, from Italy (you closed the presentation topic, so I don't know where to present myself) I think I have a problem with my Historical investigation... It should be a comparison between Nazi concentration camps and gulags but I'm finding very difficult to write a proper summary of evidence... I mean, I've seen lots of historical investigation, but I've never seen a comparison, and I have no idea of how the summary of evidence should be written... I mean, usually the summary of evidence should be the "easy" part and the analysis and the conclusion should be the difficult ones but... how should i proceed? Should I just divide it into two parts an…

Hello. In History, I am currently working with Paper 2, and more specifically The Rise and Rule of Single-Party States. Our teacher has given us the "European Dictatorships 1918-1945". However, I think this book is awfully boring. It contains TOO many details in my opinion. Therefore, I wonder if I can throw away this book and use Modern World History by Norman Lowe instead? I really like that book, but I'm a bit worried as to whether it is sufficient enough for Paper 2? Is it possible to get a 5 using only Modern World History? Some people have told me so, but I'm still not sure...

I'm comparing the Thirteen Days movie with the book, and seeing which one is more realistic and factual. I'll also be looking how they each, separately, compare to the actual event. However, I'm still unsure on how I should go about it, and possible sources I should use. Any help on this would be great!

hey everyone, please help! i had finished all of my IA apart from Part D, the analysis secton. my question is.. "Hiroshima and Nagasaki were bombed with nuclear weapons in 1945. To what extent was the bombing of Hiroshima more influential to Japan’s decision to surrender from WWII than the bombing of Nagasaki?" and then i started to read up all about it.. and well.. there isnt many conflicting ideas about it. like.. pretty much none! its seems to suggest that they were both of equal importance. so... do i keep going with it.. becuase i have pretty much written everything on it.. or do i start all over agian? thank you everyone!.. p.s draft is due in about 2 days.

I'm doing my Historical Investigation on the 2002 coup d'etat in Venezuela and main feed of sources comes from newspapers--not the most reliable. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on finding some better sources. It's hard because it's relatively recent and most sources are going to have some kind of bias.

While I totally love history, I seem to have some pretty big problems when it comes to writing essays. This isn't because of my language or my research skills- those have been worked into me by now. No...the problem for me seems to be the mentality behind it. Whenever an essay is assigned, I tend to over think the process. I spend days buried at the library, reading and taking notes, and by the time I finish, not only do I no longer feel like writing the essay but when I do write it, the information has been so well synthesized that I no longer remember where I got my information (my teacher keeps writing make sure you cite all info. I am just curious as to how…

I am very unsure of how to write an introduction in an essay. My teacher says that I should include all the arguments that I am going to talk in the essay, in the introduction. Also, I don't know if I should write things like: "..This essay is going to say why Fidel Castro had a real reason for being worried about the Cuban Missile.." or should it be more like: ".. Fidel Castro had reasons to fear a nuclear war because..." My teacher says that the first way is what IB like. I still strongly feel like asking this question here because the second method seems so much more natural for me. Furthermore, this is the first time my school is providing the IB ddiploma program…

Hello, I am working on my HL IA. I am essentially examining the causes and effects of the Soviet-Cuban Alliance from 1959-1991. I am analyzing the role of the US foreign policy and how it pushed Cuba towards the USSR and I will also mention how the Cuban reliance on the USSR was detrimental following the Soviet Union's collapse in the early 1990's. I am wondering if anyone happens to know where I would be able to find any primary source documents that relate to my topic. If you happen to know where I can find any primary docs relating to US Embargo, Cuban Revolution, Communism in Cuba, Overthrow of US economic dominance, Nationalization of US Firms, USSR Patronage, …

I'm done my HI, and I really want a perfect score, as to take some load off of exams. I would like to get it critiqued by someone who knows how IB marks. If anyone can help me with that, please respond. Thanks! If anyone wants to read it, please message me. The focus question is: To what extent was Wilson's sympathy for the Czech Legion a false pretense for foreign intervention in Russia (1918-1920).

Does anybody have this book as well? (ISBN-13 978-0-00-717377-8 or ISBN-10 0-00-717377-6) It's called: EUROPE 1870 - 1991 by Terry Morris and Derrick Murphy I hate the First World War... It saves words, but will it be frowned apon by the examinar? Evaluation of Sources: Does it matter which ones we use, or should we use our strongest? I have most of my paper already written up, does anyone think they could look over what i have? It would be greatly appreacited! Thanks so much guys!

Hi, So I had a meeting with my History teacher today, and she said that I didn't have to change my research question, but she was concerned that in the future it might a little bit broad. Could someone help me and tell me what I could do to make it more specific? My question is: To what extent did Great Britain cause the 1947-1948 Arab-Israeli war? The time frame stops before Isreal's independence. Her argument was that Great Britain had so much going on at that point that it would be too broad. I see where she's coming from, but I think it's too specific to say "To what extent did (specific action of Great Britain) cause the war?" Comments? Thanks!

I have just started planning my Historical Investigation and I have some problems with choosing two good sources to analyse and compare. Firstly, do the sources have to be in stark contrast to each other? Secondly, can I compare a picture or a photo with a written source, i.e. an extract from a diary or an article? Do You know whether there is any specified demand to choose the sources from the same / different period? Is it better to compare two opinions of the politicians from the same year or a contemporary article with an old original speech etc.? And finally, can I use only original sources, like an extract from Hitler's speech or can I use some articles …

Hi. History has, in spite of my relatively big interest, never been my best subject. I don't know why I don't manage to seize high grades in my essays, but I guess God simply blessed me with other skills. Therefore, I would be happy about a 5 for history. So, my question to you is: how do I get there? 'Cause I know that, in order to get a 7, you have to know quite a bit about historiography, etc. What distinguishes between a 4 and a 5, or say a 5 and a 6?

My teacher basically handed us a list of thirty-two topics, with 2 books/journal articles that offer contrasting views for each topic, and we were to choose one of the 32 topics and use those 2 sources. Purely out of curiosity, I was wondering if this was common practice, or did other teachers do it differently? (:

What are some tips for Paper 3 essay writing? I know that you're supposed to fully address the demands of the question (ie. to what extent, compare and contrast, etc.) and be as analytical as possible. I've also heard that the topic sentence of each new paragraph should start with something analytical that's related to the thesis. However, what should I do for a thesis in response to the question "Analyze reasons for the success of the Bolsheviks..." For that one, should I just state factors that helped the Bolsheviks (ie. they had the Red Army on their side, Kerensky major failed, etc.?) and then attempt to analyze them? How exactly could I analyze, say, a discussion abo…

I have decided that I am doing my IA on the Cuban Missile Crisis, however I am slightly lost as to questions. I have done plenty on reading and I have been thinking about questions to do with justification (e.g. Was the USSR justified in placing missiles in Cuba?), however this particular question is to broad in my opinion and may a little bit too 'TOKish'. Does anyone have any ideas as to the type of questions that I could do? Examples/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I'm doing a practice IA in my history class so next year I can be ready for my actual one. I'm in HL history. I want to do it on WWI because next year I plan on doing it on WWII so this could be a good precursor for my real one (we're not allowed to do it on the same war). We haven't done anything on WWI yet though so I don't really know a lot about it. I only have one very narrow question that is "What were the psychological effects of the use of mustard gas during WWI?". Could anyone give me another question that I could use for WWI? Thanks, cmertin

Hello! My IA topic is: The mexican revolution had four main stages: the liberal revolution of Madero, the counter revolution by Huerta, the constitutionalists' struggle for power, and the rule of Carranza. Within each of these stages, to what extent did reform take place? The Mexican Revolution brought about minimal reform for the people of Mexico. So, the question is pretty much set - we get our IA topics assigned. I just need to know where to start? I know the basics, but reform is really vague. Do I just pick an aspect of reform or what?

I finished one historical investigation on how the bolsheviks impact on agriculture 1917-1918 affected the early end of war communism. now... on to my next historical investigation . You see, I'm not really content with the one mentioned above, so I started working on a new one. Depending on how my new IA will turn out I might trash my old one. Hi, I am trying to find a topic for my historical investigation and I was wondering if you have any suggestions or tips. I would like to focus on Stalin, and mainly his personality or desicionmaking... perhaps something about the purges. But it has to be a controversional topic, with different view. What about .. how much people actually knew that Stalin was (partly) responsible for the purges in the country or abroad. I know it that is not a good reaseach questions, but something in the lines of that.. Thanks

I'm in IB1 at the moment so it might be a little early to worry about the History IA. Nevertheless, I have a question about an event (Bay of Pigs) for which I wrote quite a good essay in pre-IB. This was my research question: "To what extent was the Bay of Pigs Invasion doomed to fail?" Now, I wonder if this is a good topic for my IA in IB2. I'm not sure as to whether it might be a bit too broad? What do you say? I'd be happy to hear some examples of how I can refine the question, in case it has to be narrowed down. Thanks!

I'm not really sure how to focus my topic for my ia to where I can find a lot of information. I was thinking on focusing on the free speech movement in Berkeley and how that evolved into the early Hippie movement and possibly how it started to spread from there into other college campuses. Possibly on the free speech movement and/or hippie movement in Berkeley? Any help at all will be greatly appreciated. : )
