Okay. I need to explain myself before I get yelled at. First, I admit it is my fault that I am completely cramming for the history SL test. Yes I know I'm not supposed to do that, but I had a terrible year of horrible teachers. Second, I am in DIRE DIRE DIRE need of advice on how to write history SL paper 1 and 2. Third, my history teacher is a total ignorant pervert. I didn't even KNOW that the course was called "20th Century World History" not freaking "US History" until like a month ago. Now the IB test is in about 2 days. We took 3 practice paper 1s where WE graded it and we took 2 paper 2s where he did not explain how to write them at ALL. So okay here are my que…

I'm doing my essay on Marianne as a symbol for the French Revolution and I've thought about focusing as to why she is a she. I thought to formulate it something like "What factors contributed to the rise of a female as a personification of the French Revolution?" (or if that turns out to be too broad, "To what extent did factor X contribute to the rise of [and so on]") I am including arguments such as the resentment of everything royal during the revolution, the traditional use of women to personify virtues in Rome and that revolution is a feminine word in French. Do you think that this is a good topic and what do you think about the research question?

Hi I don't know which question to choose... 1) To what extent was the American entry into the Second World War a direct result of Pearl Harbour? 2) To what extent was the victory of the Allies during the Second World War a result of American entry? 3) To what extent is/was Abraham Lincoln's popularity a result of the Union victory during the American Civil War? Could you guys help me pick which one is best and how I could improve it? Thanks in advance

The amount of material that one has to revise for the Paper 3 exams is just crazy, especially if you're aiming for a grade above 5. My teacher chose the History of the Americas for Paper 3, and there is so much stuff one has to learn, everything from the domestic policies of Canada to populist leaders in South America, etc. This has made me unsure of how I should revise for the exams. Any advice?

We are doing a "practice" IA in class, and I really like mine. I am hoping to use it as my official IA, but I am not sure if that entails less teacher help than I have been given. We have been required to turn in each of the sections as we work on the paper so our teacher can make notes on it and return it to us to be fixed. Is this not allowed in the official IA that goes to IB? I know that is the case with English and TOK essays, but I haven't heard anything about history. Thanks

Im leaning strongly toward imperialism (though another idea may be better) and am wondering if anybody knows any good books that are really pro- or anti-imperialism. Please help.

Hey I am working on my history paper and I was wondering if somebody could give me any advice on it. My topic is Ellis Island and originally I was going to do how immigrants effected the United States and made it into what it is today, but then I switched it to examining the medical exams done at Ellis Island. What do you think? Do you have any ideas?

After looking through some past history papers I realized that there is always one question relating in some way to the rise of either one or two dictators. Therefore, shouldn't you be able to say whatever to all the foreign and domestic policies of dictators and only focus on their rise to power instead? Shouldn't it be possible to only study the rise to power of say Hitler and Castro for Single-Party States since there will, as far as I know, always be a question on the rise of one or two dictators?

Hey ! So, I am currently writing an HI and have done quite a bit of research on Reconstruction and the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, however when I submitted my rough RQ, "To what extent did the assassination of Abraham Lincoln lead to the failure of Reconstruction ?"my teacher had told me it was not specific enough yet. I was wondering if anyone had general ideas on how to narrow this topic further.

Hi everyone. I'm taking IB next year, and I'm pretty excited about Islamic History. So, has anyone here ever took it? Or is currently taking it? If so, what are your thoughts (good/bad) towards the subject? Personally, I love the subject + I'm aiming for a really good mark next year. Thanks

I'm doing mine on Winston Churchill's speeches and its effects over British performance during WWII. My general outline goes like this: relate the speeches with their respective historical events and then see the effects over the population. I haven't had any problems on gathering info for the first part, but I'm not quite sure how to deal with the second one. Help, please?

I haven't been given too much information from my teacher about the History IA but tomorrow we are going on a trip partly to look for sources for use in our IA's. I'm looking to do an IA on the Cuban Revolution and am thinking possibly something along the lines of "To What Extent was the Cuban Revolution a Communist Revolution?". Would this be a good title that would enable me to get a good mark? How simple or complex should the question be? So far I have got the impression that it should be something quite simple as the main focus should be source analysis... Any advice on the question, research, source finding and the writing of the IA would be greatly apreciated! Thank…

Hey there! I have to start my History IA soon. The only thing i'm sure of is that i'll do it about the conflict in the Middle-East. I'm taking Middle-Eastern history for HL, so it'll help me when i do the exam Thing is, I still don't know what will be my topic. I'd like to focus primarily on Lebanon, but i'd be willing to write about anything related to palestine and israel too. Any ideas!??? THANKS!

for my history IA topic, I've decided to do something from WWII. Most likely, I'll choose D-Day or some other part of the Invasion of Normandy. The military strategy is was interests me the most about it. However, I don't quite know which aspects to focus on or what I should be investigating. Does anyone have any ideas? I don't necessarily need a fully written question but just a more precise topic.

My topic is on slavery and the Civil War. One of my primary sources is an interview. But this interview was conducted in 1984 with a former black slave... and I found it in a book. Is this fine to use with the proper citations? I have no idea why my teacher commented on the draft to recheck this source stating it would have been 120 years old... when really the interview is 26? Maybe its just a misunderstanding on her part? I wanted to make sure anyway, thank you.

Hey guys. So I'm currently in my second year of IB History and we got assigned a paper to write in first person as Hitler. We had to pretend we were the dictator and talk about our (their) personal aims, ideologies, and support. I personally found this a very difficult paper to write and was wondering if anyone else had to write this type of paper and how they wrote it. Was it [or would it be] difficult for you to write as well?

So, i've selected Fall of Communism as my topic for my history IA. I have to finalize a detailed topic/ research question by tomorrow and I have encountered some difficulty doing so. I read the year range (1976 to 1989) in our class' history textbook, Martin Gilbert's History of the 20th Century Concise Edition" and took notes, yet I still can't think of an interesting research question. So, I was just wondering if anyone had any tips on how to finalize a good research question, in regards to my "Fall of Communism" topic and/or if anyone could offer any suggestions of IA topics they have come up with. Well, I picked up my IB books about 2 weeks ago and looking through them, I found no history book. So, is this the case with everyone else. And, I tend to do better when I study out of an actual book rather than printed papers, which will be replacing our books. So, does anyone have a good guide to use with the syllabus? Hello! I'm currently doing the Presidents of America: Truman vs. Eisenhower, JFK vs LBJ and Ford vs. Nixon, but am very behind on notes. I wanted to do some tables to compare each thematically, however my notes are a slight mess and I was wondering whether anyone knew of any good websites/sources/books that I would be able to use. It's a bit annoying really, because my handwritten notes are always a mess, I can't decide a good way to order them when writing them out whilst my teacher is talking and I never have enough time to type them all out afterwards... any tips for that problem too? Thank you, and hope you all had a fab christmas! Lizzie

I've looked at some examples of History IAs and they all seem to have references to sources in the D-section (Analysis). I don't understand why this is necessary, since one only uses the information from the B-section (Summary of Evidence) where all sources are already referenced.

I'm doing my Part D for the IA, the Analysis, right now, and I am wondering what are some things that will be good to include as well as mistakes that people tend to commit. I know I should be doing the question in historical context, different views, and analysis of evidence. Another question I have is, how exactly do you analyze the evidence? Thanks!

Hello all, I was wondering as to whether anyone may be able to clarify a few areas of the History IA paper we are to write, as I am floundering within a see filled with question marks. I have looked at previous topics on how to 'set up' the paper, yet would someone be able to explain the differentiation between categories B and D (as my teacher neglected to tell us, and aid us for the most part). Additionally, for section C are you to merely discuss the o.p.v.l of each of two sources selected? As I am a new, non VIP member would anyone happen to know of any websites where you may be able to see History IA paper exemplars? Many thanks, Pathos

What were the reasons for the re-emergence of serfdom in eastern europe? In western Europe the conflict between the king and his vassals resulted in gains for the common man. Why did this not happen in Eastern Europe? why would the reign of the great elector be regarded as the most crucial constitutional struggle in Prussian history for 100 years? what did he do to increase his royal authority? Hi, When I had a History Paper 2 test earlier today I found a question in Topic 2 that I really liked. It had to do with the Weimar Republic, which I know quite a lot about. The problem is that my class has not studied that topic. We studied Topic 3 and 5. When I asked my teacher if you're allowed to answer a question from a topic you haven't studied, she told me no. She said that the examiners will even know what topics you studied. However, I do not completely trust her as this is her first year teaching IB. Higher Level History requires a great deal of reading, perhaps more so than any other subject. Therefore, when revising, it must be important to have some kind of approach, so that the material doesn't overwhelm you. I have exams in May 2010, and I'm not really sure how to approach revision. What do you think is best: revise one topic after another according to the syllabus, or study them in a chronological order? I'm leaning toward the latter alternative.

Hey everyone. I'm starting to work on my History IA and I have had my topic for a while, but I can't find enough reasons to answer the question I had set myself. I am planning to do it on the Lateran Treaties of 1929, and started off with "Why did the Holy See sign the Lateran Treaties of 1929?" but that has kind of failed. Okay, so for the past two weeks, all we've been doing in history class is analyzing one of the prescribed subject's bullets. I seemed to pretty good at it; researching information and organizing (pretty much analyzing it). After we finished one of the bullets, I felt like I knew the 'bullet' very well. Then, when the teacher asked us to sum it up, or synthesize the bullet into a short essay, my mind went blank. I don't why, really. Maybe it was the realization that in IB (or maybe just IB History), there's won't be any notes written by the teacher for you to memorize and spew back (as one of my friends said: read & regurgitate) in a paper like we did last year. We wer…

Part A for my History SL IA topic is coming up, and I have various interests, but I'm not sure how you go about formulating the perfect topic. Can anyone give me an example of their thinking path while they were forming theirs? My teacher says it's best to do a topic related to areas we are studying. Some of the examples given in the guide were interesting, such as "How did the geisha's way of life change during the Meiji period?", but of course I cannot re-do this topic. I've been looking at a couple of things; the Dunkirk evacuation in World War 2, the Chinese Civil War, and the Hundred Flowers Campaign that also took place in China. i found this very good article which said that Hitler considered himself an art genius and that being a genius he thought he was able to do anything he pleased be it evil or not. "We define a genius on the basis of his talent. At the time, talent was not the main focus. A genius had to have a strong personality. He was a larger-than-life talent who was permitted to do anything, including evil things. The genius has outstanding ideas, and they must be implemented, even if they are completely amoral....Let me say it one more time: The genius was allowed to be above morality. The amorality of the Nazis represents taking this position to its unthinkable extreme." Historian B…

I am currently in the process of writing my historical investigation, but got confused with the Sections B and D. What exactly is the difference between the summary of evidence and the analysis? I've read through the criteria, but I still don't exactly grasp the discrepancy. Does B include the facts, figures, pre-happenings and consequences of the historical event? Is D for the causes and different interpretations thereof?

Hey everyone, My history teacher would like us to start narrowing down our IA topic and start researching. I've decided to do my IA on the Mexican Revolution as we haven't done much work on it in class so I feel like I should know it better. However, because we haven't done much of it in class, I haven't really thought of how to narrow it down but was thinking about "What was the role of nationalism in causing the Mexican Revolution?" and I was wondering if this is a viable topic, if it is narrow enough or if it sounds like a really easy IA and that it isn't challenging enough. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!
