I realized that the mathematics, physics and some other forums have a "help" topic for questions on that subject. So I decided it would be a good idea to start a similar topic to those for History! There is one problem: history (all of you who take history will understand) doesn't ever have any definite answers, except facts like specific years and names. Therefore, this thread would take a little different form: it would be primarily for helping formulate ideas/arguments, giving facts, etc. I'm History HL with a predicted 6/7 (my teacher refuses to tell me which grade he finally decided on). My prescribed topic is Communism in Crisis. If anyone needs any help, I'm will…

Paper 1 The purpose of this thread is to introduce you to Paper 1, the Source Paper. Whether you are taking Standard Level or a Higher Level examination makes no difference as, rather unusually, the sources and questions are the same for both examinations. The reason why I'm doing this is that I've came to notice there's a lot of people here in IBS which don't really understand what's required for this paper. There are three Prescribed Subjects assessed in Paper 1: Peacemaking, Peacekeeping – International Relations 1918–36 The Arab-Israeli Conflict 1945–79 Communism in Crisis 1976–8 For each Prescribed Subject there will usually be four written sources an…

Both in question 3 in Paper 1 and in Section C in the Internal Assessment, you will be asked to evaluate sources for their Origins, Purpose, Values and Limitations. Here are some questions you should be asking yourself when you are faced with a particular type of source:

Tips on writing a good Historical Investigation Suggested word count for each section: A. Plan of Investigation: up to 150 words B. Summary of Evidence: 400-500 words C. Evaluation of Sources: 200-350 words D. Analysis: 600 - 800 words E. Conclusion: up to 200 words F. Bibliography: Not counted in the word count. Total word count: 2000 words maximum The above section-by-section word count is a suggested allocation of words only, and it is not necessary to stick strictly to it. However, the bulk of your word count should be in the Summary of Evidence and Analysis. While it is not necessary to choose a title within the syllabus you're studying, it would be useful if you do.…

Now that I'm done with my History finals (which I've been panicking so much about for the last few months) I'm going to procrastinate by writing some tips on how to do well in IB History while trying not to repeat things that have been said in previous posts on the forum too much. The historical investigation I wrote my historical investigation on Ancient Rome and regret it somewhat, although I did find it interesting. Unless you are very much into history as a subject (and even then), doing your HI on a topic that somewhat interests you and is likely to be of some use in your exams is, I think, the best option. This is simply because having spent so much time on your HI,…

Reading, Notetaking and Knowing in History The following information was given to me by my HL History professor who is also an annual IB grader for History and it is also my own advice that I use all of the time fr my History HL class. These are the major tips my professor has given my classmates and I on creating class-notes and study-notes from books, historiography, etc. that are incredibly organized and the methods aim at reaching each type of persons study-style and note-taking style. I hope this is beneficial. It really helped me. Quick Tips to Utilize: Dividing notes Internal (Micro) vs. External (Macro) Capitalizing Arguments/ Marking Arguments in a Specific Way…

Hello IB Survival. My HL History teacher, who has taught IB history for years, created a general markband guide for marking history essays, and I felt I should share it with you all on here. This is by no means the official IB rubric, but rather a "guide" that you should aim for when writing your essays. IB Essay Markbands IB 1, IB 2 You do not understand the question. You do not have an argument. You might include some historical facts, but they are wrong or irrelevant. You do not show that you understand what else is going on at the same time (historical context). You do not talk about different interpretations of the topic. 1-2 Marks: Answers…

I need some help deciding on my group 3. My school only offers History HL and Psychology HL, so I'm basically being forced to sacrifice one of my HL's to group 3. I'm interested in both, I like learning about history, and I also find Psychology fascinating. Ultimately, the deciding factor for my will be the IA. Which IA is easier? The IA for History HL or Psychology HL? Also workload and what you do in the class. Is there more work in History HL or Psychology HL? What kind of work

Hi, My school has chosen the following topics for our paper 3: Topic 10 (Nationalism and independence in India (1919–1964)), Topic 14 (The People’s Republic of China (1949–2005)) and Topic 15 ( Cold War conflicts in Asia). What are some useful resources (textbooks, websites, journal articles, etc.) for the exams? Does anyone have notes on these topics that they are willing to share? I am having trouble finding relevant information for these topics. I have found a textbook for Topic 14 (The People’s Republic of China (1949–2005)) and a textbook that briefly addresses some of the sections in Topic 15 (The Cold War: Superpower Tensions and Rivalries Course Companion) b…

Hi, So IAs are coming up, and I really need to choose a topic. I've come up with a few already, like I'm really interested in feminism, and I was thinking perhaps something to do with Barbies. I've spoken with my supervisor already, but he says that I should give him a more focused topic idea. I was thinking about how Barbies have evolved from back then to now, and how Barbie represents her own woman who has taken up these fantastic roles and jobs that woman today still haven't been able to do. (President) But it's not exactly a question, and I'm not really connecting the dots here. If this isn't a solid enough idea, I think I'd do something along the lines of "How has W…

Hi! I need to start working on my IA as soon as possible but I'm struggling with the topic. I was thinking about doing it on French influence on fashion in mexico during "El Porfiriato", but my teacher said it was too vague and that i was focusing on other things rather than in history. Then I thought i could write it on "to what extent did Coco Chanel contributr to the womens right movement in the 19th century? This are just ideas, but if you could give me some topic ideas you would really really help me. Thank you

Could you share the topic of your History IA (and your grade if you already have it) ? This could be helpful for many! Do you have any tips about choosing a topic? I was planning on choosing a topic related to what we've learned in class because it may help me study for the exams. Do you recommend this? Do you recommend a topic related to Ancient History or to Modern History? Too bad nobody answered Well anyways I want to share the process I went when deciding a history topic First I wanted to do something related to witch hunting: ¿What factors caused the young women to be acused of being witches and imprisoned in the Salem Witch Trials of 1692 and how was this …

Hey! I'm about to start research for my IA, and I've done a little bit so far, but I think I decided on this as my question: To what extent did Belgian colonization of Rwanda lead to tensions through Hutu subjugation and ultimately contribute to the Rwandan genocide? I wanted to talk about how when Belgium took over in 1918, they allowed the Tutsis to practice control over the Hutus, causing the class divide/tensions to deepen. Is this good? Does it need to be more specific?

So this is probably one of the most-asked questions regarding History lol. I always get 7s on paper 1s (bc they're easier, and more direct to structure) My paper 2s always get 6s, tops. I always write around 5 pages (I write really fast), but my teacher says I have too much evidence and not enough analysis. What counts as analysis, and how do I boost the paper 2 to a 7? Thank you so much

Hi there! I chose my EE topic to be economic reforms in China under Deng Xiaoping's rule. But I have a slight problem with making a research question for it. What I had in mind was something like "How successful was Chinese economic transformation in 1980s" but it seems a bit too broad. I also came up with "How far were American Chinese relations beneficial for China during its economic transformation? but then will I have enough things to write about? I need your help guys, preferably as soon as possible. If you have any ideas about similar topics, please let me know as well

Hello, I was wondering if historical interpretations and direct quotations of historians are essential in an essay (paper 2 and 3) for an "evaluation of different perspectives". Sometimes I find it hard to find historical interpretations for everything (plus, do you know how I can find them more easily if they are not in the textbooks?) Thank you in advance!

Heyy! My history teacher has randomly gone off the radar over summer, so I'm here looking for advice on my IA topic (HL) At the moment my inquiry question is "To what extent did the assassination of Indira Gandhi repair the relationship between Sikhs and Hindus?" I came to this as I thought arguing that it repaired the relationship would be an interesting and "controversial" stance to take considering the riots and social divide that shortly followed. Anyways, how's the topic? Is the premise narrow enough or do I need to be more specific and include "repair the relationship as a long term consequence" or something along those lines? Does the wording need tweaking? …

Hello! I am currently in the process of writing my history EE, I have my topic question which is as follows: To what extend did 9/11 have on the safety of domestic commercial aviation? I see a lot of people saying to not write about 9/11, but I believe since I'm talking about the aviation industry as a result of 9/11 I'm okay, and I haven't heard my advisor say anything bad about it. Anyways, currently I'm struggling with forming the body. I've written the background and the abstract, but I've hit a block on actually writing my essay. I have a ton of information regarding aviation both before and after the attacks, and I'm struggling to actually get it on paper…

Hi guys, Do you think it'd be a good idea to do the History IA on 9/11? Many recommend not to do it on 9/11 as it's recent (even though it occurred 10+ years ago), and also people say it'd be hard to find sources on it due to it being recent. I was thinking about doing it on something syllabus related, such as the World Wars, period between the World Wars, Cold War, Dictators (Hitler/Stalin), but many say these topics have been overdone to death, thus it's best to avoid them, and do something that is not overdone like 9/11. What do you guys recommend? I have asked some people already (1 being on this forum), but I'm looking for more suggestions, as I don't want to sta…

To what extent were its ideological influences greater than its economic influences? I'm really interested in the link between the American and French Revolution, the influence figures like Jefferson and Franklin had on France. But I know that this topic is still huge and also not talked much about...I can find lots of primary sources but not secondary ones or historiography. Can anyone give me some advice on it???

Lots of people seem to have trouble with the Causes of the Spanish Civil War, so as revision for my exam tomorrow I'm gonna make it simple through a guide, containing all of the essay factors! To start, the political spectrum: Right Wing - Nationalists. Includes Army, Church, landowners, monarchists, CEDA, and Franco's Fascist Party, Falange. Left Wing - Republicans. Includes socialists, communists, anarchists, trade unionists and moderate liberals. The Long-Term causes include Socio-Economic, Army and Church, and political system/factors. These led to a desire for change, which manifests itself in the short term cause of the Second Republic 1931-1936. This led to polaris…

Hey, I was wondering if anyone knows how to format the History IA, as in Chicago, MLA, APA? I heard that the citations should be in Chicago but I'm not sure if that was right, can somebody confirm? Or does it not matter and you just have to have a cover page, 3 sections, and citations? Also I'm not sure if it's against the rules or something, but I'm new to the forum and don't have VIP, do you think someone can help me get this file, so that I can check how he formatted it. Thanks a lot,

My History IA question is something along the lines of "TWE were Hitler's expansionist policies a response to the border changes imposed by the Treaty of Versailles." I obviously have to find two sources to analyse on this. If anyone knows of any short-ish (25 pgs or under) sources (either primary or secondary) which discuss this I would be incredibly grateful! So, I've been really struggling to come up with a historical investigation topic, but I finally maybe found one? I'm too sure how good it is though: To what extent did Grigori Rasputin lead to the fall of the Romanov Dynasty? (Or something along those lines...I don't really know). If y'all have any feedback (is it a good one? how do I make it better?). I really just wanna get this assignment done cause I'm not that interested in history. *EDIT: So I'm actually thinking about doing something alone the lines of "To what extent did fascism impact early to mid-20th century Italian art?" I'm just worried it won't really be a history paper, but an art one instead.*

I have to choose my history IA research question soon, but I'm not quite sure whether or not I should word them differently or change certain parts. I have these hypothetical questions and wanted to maybe hear some input. Compare and contrast the methods used to accuse and penalize women during the Salem witch trials of 1692 and the persecution of witches of Matthew Hopkins of 1644-47? To what extent did Tibuta’s confession start the mass hunt for witches in the Salem Witch Trials of 1692?
