Hi, I need some help in finding a good Maths HL IA topic. For the past few weeks I have been looking for a good Maths Hl exploration related to discrete maths however I failed to find one good one. Some of the things I looked at were the Chinese postman problem, the four color theorem and Travelling salesman problem, however the problem with these is that, I don’t think there is enough content to write 10 pages on them. I would really appreciate if someone could suggest some topic or even some areas that I could look at for Maths Hl IA, preferably related to discrete maths. Thank you very much!!!

I start grade 11 in September and I'm going into Math HL . I'm really good at math but I still want to prepare myself for this course. I can't seem to find any syllabus on the IB website and I'm not sure other syllabus i find on random websites will be updated or accurate. Anyone know where I could find an accurate syllabus or maybe pdf versions of books? Also, any other tips for preparing for math HL? And anyone recommend a graphic calculator? edit: literally minutes after posting this i found the syllabus http://highered.colorado.gov/academics/admissions/PLA docs/Mathematics (GT-MA1)/IB – Mathematics HL Curriculum Guide.pdf But I don't know which books to use…

Hey guys, Long story short, Math HL is hard. I'm doing terrible and don't know what to do. I study and all but I missed a month of the subject (personal reasons) and don't have time to catch up. To the point, If i drop HL math what other subject do I take as HL? MY SUBJECT CHOICES: -math HL -Physics HL -ITGS HL -Chem SL -English SL -French AB my school offers BM and economics as well. I don;'t want to take Visual arts. Im interested in computer engineering and mechanics but I know I need math HL for those subjects... Any help would be appreciated

How can I do this: Sn is the sum of the first n terms of a geometric sequence with first term a and common ratio r. Let Pn represent the product of these terms. Write Pn in terms of a and r. Show that the sequence formed by taking the reciprocals of the terms is also geometric. Write Rn, the sum of the first n terms of the reciprocals, in terms of a and r, and hence show that (Sn/Rn)n = (Pn)²

So, I'm not the greatest at math. During my sophomore year I got an a first quarter and straight B's the next three. (However this was just Ny state regent standards, known to be lightwork compared to IB) I hate studying and math work, so I never really completed all the hw nor studied for tests. To make matters worse, I have the chronic habit of falling asleep in classes I find boring, like to the point where have my notes have giant lines across them because I sometimes fall alseep while writing. (I have tried sleep, caffiene, wasabi, gum and mints all to no avail.) in May my parents made my take the HL maths course. I wasn't worried, as I thought my advisor would look …

As a second year IB student i have finalise my math IA topic, i was browsing different sites, I am very interested on the war structures eg- chakravyuh (in the epic mahabharata) as the resources were limited i moved towards the advanced flight routes, as my aim is to be a aeronautical engineer so moving with this i thought to model a best flight path for a long travelling plane, using calculus and taking other parameters, like air pressure, then speed of wind against or with the plane. any suggestions how to proceed? for both the topics.

Hi, I decided to do a math EE on factors that determine the strengths of a Linear Feedback Shift Register. I thought I would talk about the seed, taps and the number of flip-flop and do many statistical test, however half way through my research I came to realize that the only thing that affects the strength is the taps and thus there wouldn’t be much of exploration except some simple things about finite fields. Nonetheless I have already written quarter of the essay on stream ciphers and LFRS, and also for most of my break I was reading about LFSRs, so I don’t want that to go to waste. Can someone help me by suggesting a thing that I could explore for my EE that still be…

Hi, I have been trying to do my maths IA (HL), and I did think that I found a reasonable topic. So basically my topic is related to spirographs (maths behind it to be precise). I was initially planning to find the area of the figures of hypocycloids. But then I realised it is already all over the internet. This then seems to be unoriginal (or do you think its fine to proceed?). Now that it looks unoriginal, I decided to twist it a bit and find the hypocycloid consisting of a circle rolling inside an ellipse. But the problem here is, this requires stuff like curvature and elliptical integral. I understand them, but is this too complicated for our level? An…

Hi all, I am in the second year of the diploma programme. [HL: Math, Business, Economics. SL: English lang & lit, French Ab, Physics] We have 6 students in the Math HL course and almost all of us want to go into different walks of life: Engineering, Architecture, Economics & Business. Now, the problem we are facing is deciding on the Option Topic. Our teacher says that there can be only one option topic per school, and I would like to know if we can have more than 1 option topic, because doing something that is irrelevant to our field of study doesn't make sense to me and all of us really are passionate about the maths our respective careers are going to have…

Hey hey hey I'm planning to get a head start on HL Math by working my way through a textbook over my summer break. I currently have PDFs of the Pearson textbook, Cambridge textbook, and H&H textbook. Which one is the best for a clear, thorough introduction to math for a person who is quite nervous about HL math and can a) explain the material clearly (I don't care if its a long explanation- it needs to be good), b) provide lots of practice questions and c) have challenging questions that can test my abilities, similar to ones on the exam? Or is there another textbook that is better? merci beaucoup

So, I am planning to finish my Math HL IA over the summer. I have already begun on a topic which involves measuring the volumes and surface areas of different tori by deriving equations from solids of revolution in calculus. My math teacher approved of my idea, but I somehow feel uneasy about this topic as it appears too easy. Any thoughts? Do you think calculating the volume of a tori is too easy? Thanks!

I've been having a lot of trouble trying to think of a topic for my math IA, and I think the reason why is that I still don't really understand how I am supposed to approach it. Is the math IA a "research paper," as in you research a math topic you are interested in and its applications (for example, fourier transform and analyzing sound files) and then write a report on your findings? In this case, the objective is not to come up with original content, but just to understand your topic as much as possible, so that you are able to do the calculations and you can explain the topic in your own words. It doesn't seem like this is what IB wants you to do, from what I've …

Does the IB require that answers to exam questions are written in simplified form (unless specifically asked for in the question)? If no marks are deducted, one would save a considerable amount of time by not simplifying.

Does anyone know where I can find the syllabus for next year for Maths HL? I'm trying to get ahead and familiarize myself with the course during summer break (right now). I have here with me the Haese textbook and I have absolutely no idea where to start . Anyone have any suggestions on what I can self-teach or go over on my own? Btw, I will also be using other online resources such as videos etc... Thanks

How hard is HL Math? I'm a good student and my teacher told me to definitely get HL, but I'm not exactly sure because people say it is too hard. I know it depends, but can you provide an insight into the hardships of the course? I know SL is too easy for me, and my school offers only HL and SL. My other subjects are HL English Lit, HL Economics, SL Biology, SL and SL History. Will I suffer? Thanks

Hi! I'm wanting to do an IA about space or something related to gymnastics but I'm not sure about what I can include or the maths/methodology I could use. For space, would it be something either to do with modelling paths of comets, or finding the size/age/expansion rate of the universe. For gymnastics, I'm not quite sure yet. Any ideas about what I could do or the maths/methodology in each area would be appreciated!! Thanks a ton.

Hello, I am planning to spend some of my summer trying to familiarize myself with some of the topics in Math hl and learning a few new topics on my own. Are these good enough or any other suggestions?

Hey fellows, this is my first topic on the forum. I was wondering if people doing Further Math HL could tell me a bit about the difficulty of the subject. Personally I wrote IGCSE Math and Additional Math one year early (A* and A respectively) and now im taking my A-Levels in Mathematics with Statistics 2 years early. The thing is that I want to study economics in future and for universities like the LSE it is already a requirement to have a 7 in math HL. So the only way to distinguish myself from other participants would be to take Math Further on its own (without taking math HL as well). But just having heard how difficult it is for others I would need some advice.…

Please. I have read this chapter the entire day and I am about to give up. All I see is they doing weird crap. So step (1) is plugging in 1 for any n. So far so goo. Step (2a) is plugging k for any n. No problem. Step (2b) is plugging in (k+1) for any n. And theeeeeeeen whaaaaaat??? What have we freaking achieved with this other than getting a mess of an expression? How is that of any meaning? I don't even understand the algebra they with the plugins and then out of the blue they claim it's all nice and demonstrated. HOW COME?

I am starting my Internal Assessment and I have some topics in mind. I want to merge the Bayes' Theorem with the SIR model. My case study will be the HIV model of transmission and infection but I am wondering if there is any way to combine the idea of how accurate medial tests are in that country so that an infected individual with HIV would practice safe sex and no longer infect others because he knows of his condition. I could also pot this against some real world data. The problem is I do not know where in the SIR model woulda I link the Bayes Theorem or which variable would change. For this question, part (e)(ii) I don't understand how the answer could be so simple. I tried a very long-winded way to prove that it was, but the answer simply says as the parameter t >0, therefore D would not lie between A and B?? Does anyone understand the logic behind this? I have also attached the mark scheme. Any comments would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

So my math teacher asked me to submit an IA topic by the summer break for the Math HL exploration. One topic I was particularly interested in was the hedonic pricing method, which is statistical regression technique that is used to estimate the market value of real estate properties such as houses etc. However, I'm not entirely sure if such a topic would be feasible as I'm worried that my IA may turn out to be more economics based than math based. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Hey guys, as you know exams are in less than two weeks and, probably as all of you, I am stressed for maths (I need to get a 7 to meet my university requirements). I think creating a post to share suggestions and useful revision tips would be useful. My main suggestions are the following. 1)Do past papers 2)If you manage to put your hands on the questionbank, do past questions divided in topics. I feel that this technique allows you to understand the typical exercises better than doing past papers. If the questionbank is not available, just scroll through the papers and do all the exercises of the same topic together 3)The section which I find…

Hi, I'm an pre-IB student and I'm considering taking Maths HL. Other subjects I'm taking are: Polish SL, English B HL, Chemistry HL, Psychology SL and Biology, but I'm not sure yet wether on SL or HL, it'll depend on my maths choice. I'm a good student at maths, I get only A's, I took part in many competitions and did quite well in few of them. My teachers say that I will probably manage to finish Maths HL but I personally think I do not have a chance for anything better than a 5, which will not be enough for my university entrance requirements (i'm thinking about something like engineering). The other option is that I will take Biology HL and go for medicine. I…

Imagine an HL Paper 2 problem like this (real example):Given a pdf f(x) = k ln(x) for 1 ≤ x ≤ 3, find the median of X.Finding k is easy enough, and then you get a problem of the formIntegral[k ln(x) dx, 1 ≤ x ≤ m] = 1/2I imagine that the expected solution is using partial integration to obtain Integral[k ln(x) dx] = k x (ln(x) - 1), then using that to obtain an equation which can be solved numerically. In this case, the problem tests both your knowledge of the definition of a median and your ability to partially integrate ln(x).However, on an nSpire, you can define a function g(t) := Integral[k ln(x) dx, 1 ≤ x ≤ t] and then just do nSolve(g(t) = 1/2, t, 2) (the initial va…

Hi, Mi Maths HL book (Pearson's Baccalaureate) contains a multivariate calculus question in the options section for calculus, e.g. the P3 section, and I'm just taking horrible amounts of time to finally solve it and I wonder if my P3 is going to require me to solve things of this kind. The question was: the definite integral from 0 to k of (x/(sqrt(k^2 - x^2)) I have had to do partial fractions, several layers of integrations by parts, trigonometric substitutions, weierstrass substitutions, and uncountable other substitutions, and this exercise alone would easily have taken me more than 2 hours. I'm dying 🙉

Hi, I have a slight query on the following question. This is from a higher level paper (i have attached both the question and the answer) For part (c) I don't know how they could exchange 8pi/5 with 2 pi/5 and don't quite understand the sign changes. This goes with 6pi/5 to be replaced with 4pi/5 Because if you draw out the CAST diagram cos 8 pi/5 should be in the A qudrant (from 0 to pi/2) which means that both cosine and sine should be positive? and not cosine being positive and sine being negative as the answer suggested. Any advice would be great! Thanks.
