Hey there, So I am doing Maths HL and lets just say it has been an exciting and hard journey. The time has come to think of our IAs before officially starting it and I feel more inclined towards Geometry. I was reading 17 Equations that changed the world for some inspiration and I thought of the Torus and how interesting it is. I thought of two questions based on the Torus - 1. Is our Universe in the shape of a Torus? 2. What is the Gaussian Curvature of a Torus? Please post your opinions on those and feel free to suggest any other questions!

Hey guys, I'm currently doing my IA on the Traveling Salesman problem and was looking for any good books/resources with clear and simple explanation of algorithms and especially Branch and Bound, since that's what I'm doing right now. Any recommendations? Thanks in advance

Hi, I'm doing my Math HL IA on finding the volume and surface area of a frustum (from a cone). I'm determining the volume in three ways, out of which one is integration. I'm calculating the surface area in two ways, one of which uses integration too. However, though the formula for surface area is out of the HL syllabus, I feel like this is a very simple idea, and might not fulfill the 'Use of Mathematics' criterion as formulae for the volume and S.A. is available online. My Math teacher says this is sophisticated enough, though I feel the opposite. I would like an opinion on this topic and whether I can do anything else to make this topic more sophisticated. Th…

Hi, For my homework, I need to solve the following question: Given that cos a = 4/5 and cos b = 7/25, find the possible values of cos (a+b). What I have done so far is this: Using compound angle identites: cos (a+b) = cos a cos b - sin a sin b Therefore: cos (a+b) = (4/5)*(7/25) - sin a sin b I now used a calculator to find the values of cos a and cos b to find the values of sin a and sin b. Thus: sin a = 3/5 and sin b = 24/25 Then substituted back into compound angle formula: cos (a+b) = (4/5)*(7/25) - (3/5)*(24/25) Simplifying gives me 28/125 - 72/125, and thus cos (a+b)= -44/125. Then I found the angle cos (a+b) …

Hi guys, Im currently living in Slovakia where we have a slightly different education system to the one in England, specifically we go to school later than kids in England and so finish school much older. I am 15 now and in MYP 3, next year we are moving to England and I have already been accepted to an IB school. Unfortunately they wont let me into the MYP and are sending me straight to the IB. I am going to take HL Math (I need it for what I want to study at uni). I am going to skip 2 years (MYP 4, MYP 5) and finally coming to my question: What should I do to prepare for HL Math? Are there any review guides which would fill in the missing knowledge? Any that you c…

Hi I am a student and we just started to choose our ee topics. I was thinking of writing a Math EE. Im thinking of writing about vectors. so my topic is "The role of mathematics in missile defense systems" im trying to link it with vectors, trig, and some calculus so i can come up with an equation to actually shoot down missiles given the speed and location of the enemy missile. Could you guys give any advice or comments on the research question or the idea?? Thanks

Hi, for my IA I was thinking of doing the hat check problem. Essentially it goes like this; group of men walk into a restaurant checking in n number of hats at the door. The restaurant mixes the the hats up and as the evening is over, each man is randomly given a hat from the pile. What is the probability that no person gets their hat back? Suprisingly, the answer is 1/e. I am a math Sl student. I figured HL/further math students would likely recognize the problem. If anyone is familiar with the problem could you please elaborate on whether this is SL level or above. I have found some explanations rather complicated and wondered whether it was ultimately worth i…

I'm really struggling to decide whether I want to do HL Maths (Statistics) or HL Physics for my final exams. I'm pushing the deadline on when I can decide my HLs. The advice I've received so far is do whichever subject I enjoy more but, the problem is, I love both subjects! I am set on doing HL Chemistry and Economics, and think doing 4 HLs would be a waste of energy. I've been doing extremely well in both subjects (I received the single Year 11 distinction in both). My grades have consistently been better in Physics, but my grades have really started picking up in Maths over the last semester. (I was going to choose based on my Year 11 exam results, but then I luck…

So, I haven't actually started the IB yet, (I'm in PRE-IB, starting IB next year), and will be taking HL Maths. My maths teacher gave the the following question: "A CD has 10 different songs on it.The CD is put on shuffle and repeat, so no matter which song plays, any one of the 10 songs could be up next. What is the probability that at least one of the songs will be played at least 3 times before all of the songs have been played at least once." I NEED help with this question, or it will drive me crazy. So, i thought working out the probability of this NOT happening would be easier, and then just subtract that from one. So, for this not to happen, onc…

I'm trying to figure out an appropriate difficulty level for my math exploration (i.e. what can be assumed knowledge). I know that anything in the HL core is fine, but will I need to define ideas from the option/further math topics, especially if my math HL class isn't doing that option (We're only doing the calculus option in class)? The IB just took out the matrices section from the core, and I really don't want to define what a matrix is again... Same goes for stuff like bijective functions, homomorphisms, and basic set theory (or anything in the options besides the calculus one). If it helps, my topic is on the relationship between complex numbers and 2x2 ma…

So for my mathematics IA, I am doing a proof of a mathematical theory. However, because there are limited ways you can prove a certain theory, is copying the steps of a proof plagiarism? I did my research, I elaborated every step to why and how, and it is a higher degree of mathematics so I could not know how to prove this theory straight off of prior knowledge. The plagiarism aspect is very confusing to me because you don't necessarily evaluate the pros and cons to reach a strongly judgment like a historical essay, but rather to find a definite answer. I cited all my references, I understood then wrote everything in my own words, I only copied the steps of a proof. Just …

When taking Math HL Tests, the space given to us for working out the question is often too small for me. Especially when I make a mistake and have start over (I can't erase since I'm using a pen). So then I just show the work on my scratch paper. In the actual exams though, I won't be able to do this I think. I was wondering if other people have the same problem, or some advice. Thank you.

Hey All, I'm struggling a bit with my IA topic. So I was stuck for quite a whole and somebody directed me along the route of Markov Chains. For those of you who don't know what that is, I found a really good explanation video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uvYTGEZQTEs (I just learnt it myself). This was recommended was Matrices were just taken out of the core syllabus (so it is one of those better topics to achieve a high grade in the actual Maths part) and the theory itself is not that hard to learn. Anyways, I found this whole idea quite interesting and I wanted to apply it to board games, more specifically, Monopoly. So I have been doing a ton of research …

I'm a HL student for maths, and we need to soon complete our IA's. My IA is about half complete but I'm worried about the level of maths contained in it. It's based on monte carlo methods, and I've just been exploring different methods of using it, such as integration. Whenever I read Journals, it just becomes too complex beyond my understanding, and it can be sometimes too difficult too understand for my own good. I was wondering what I could explore without making it seem like I've just copied a journal with understanding it. Some useful links for the topic would be quite helpful as well thanks.

Hello everyone, I want to do my Math IA about the nabla (or del) operator used in vector calculus. I'm interested in this because I'm going to study physics at uni and I heard that physics students will need to learn this at uni. So that is a factor that will keep me motivated to do this. However, I don't really know where to go from here. Should I just base my IA on explaining what nabla is and deriving it? Or is there anything in particular I can base my IA on? Thank you.

Hi everyone! So i am currently studying math HL considering a math ia doing the enigma machine, since i am quite interested in cryptanalysis. But the more i research, the more i feel uncomfortable with it. Firstly i fear theres not much math going on in enigma machine, allow me to briefly talk about how the Enigma works. So theres this plug board connection 10 pairs of letters and leave the six of them be themselves (E.g. A connected to C and inversely C is connected to A. If B is not connected to anything it would just be itself B). And then theres three rotors to the resulted letter to go (in the case of A to C, C would goes into rotors). These rotors changes …

I have calculated the volume of plastic in each of them, but I don't know what to do next. Hi all. Recently, we were told to think of IA topics and write out a proposal for our IA. I am largely disinterested and unmotivated in most things maths, and as such I am struggling to get started. I've tried to convince myself that I'm interested in topics for exploration, but after a day they become boring and I move on to some other topic. A list of topics I've browsed through and found uninteresting/forgot about the next day: Fractals - Dragon curve Divergent series - Cesaro and Abel summation Lebesgue integration Computing: binary trees, algorithmic efficiency Topics I sort of liked but were too simple: …

Sorry for yet another IA help thread, but I seriously need some help deciding which topic to do my Math HL IA on. I've been thinking of doing my IA on types of cryptography, but my teacher shot down both of my ideas (RSA and Elliptic curve cryptography) saying they were too hard for an IA.I could investigate the modular arithmetic side of RSA encryption, but I'm not sure if that's enough. My teacher also suggested to me to find earlier methods of encryption, but I don't know how to approach such a topic.Other ideas I came up with are Gabriel's horn, but my class didn't learn integral calculus yet so I basically have to each myself in a week. Hey guys, I was wondering if Fourier series and analysis is a suitable topic for the math investigation for HL. I wanted to investigate Fourier and music, maybe something to do with modeling consonance/harmony or how it applies to different types of music. However, my math teacher believes the math is a little challenging and needs extensive explanation of physics concepts. Has anyone experimented with Fourier before, what kinds of approaches have you taken to fourier? do you think this could make a good IA? Thanks Layla

Hey, I'm kind of freaking out right now because I have two weeks to decide on my 6 IB subjects, 3 HL and 3 SL, so bear with me. I want to study in Upenn Wharton School. I'm good at maths, I am. I usually got high 90's in the previous years, between 93-98 most of the time. I like learning, too; and my professor always used to tell me to get HL when I start IB. I'm 100% sure that SL is too easy for me, but HL might be too hard. My school offers only these two .
