Felipe Doria
In the IB Mathematics HL papers, must one give exact answers in questions where it is not specifically stated to do so?For example, is sqrt(2) - sqrt(3)i the same as 1.414 - 1.732i? mechnight
Either exact or to three significant figures, if rounded. So, here, square roots as sqrt(2), not approximations. Reply
Thrashmaster
I'll just add that decimals are more acceptable on Papers 2 and 3 since they have calculators. If you were to do trig on Paper 1, for example, and (inexplicably) give a decimal value instead of, say, pi/4, that'd be really weird. They'd want the exact value. Would they count you wrong? Well, the decimal isn't in the markscheme, from what I've seen. So, getting into the habit of giving exact values is better than decimals, but decimals should be allowed on papers 2 and 3.
