hey guys, so i have my reading list for this summer, it is a list of four books that we have to read before the start of our first semester, and i was wondering if anyone had any insight to the book i am currently reading, (100 years of solitude by gabriel Garcia Marquez) i am currently only on the third chapter of the book and i am finding it extremely hard to get into. the literary imagery is wonderful in the book and, the literature is really methodical and descriptive, however i am finding it extremely sluggish.... the book is taking an extremely long time to get to the point, and i do not want to juxtapose reading another book and sending an email to my IBC stating…

So I have to write my comparative essay between House of the Spirits and Chronicle of a Death Foretold. I have chosen 'the role and significance of isolation' in the two stories and I have two main points I want to focus on. The first is isolation of a character (Esteban Trueba and Santiago Nasar respectively) and perhaps scoping over whether or not it is voluntarily. The second point is isolation in terms of location (Tres Marias and the town in which Chronicle is set and how it affects the storyline. Does anyone have any suggestions for laying it out? Or points to cover? Or anything? Help would be very appreciated.

Hey guys, I'm currently working on my WL2 assignment which is a detailed study of a key passage from Henrik Ibsen's A Doll's House, and I was just wondering about the format of this assignment. Would it simply look like a regular essay/commentary with a statement of intent at the beginning?

The topic I chose for my essay has to do with the portrayal and significance of the outsider in chronicles of a death foretold by marquez and house of the spirits by allende. The difficulties i am having with this is that firstly with the format, is it supposed to be intro, point 1 compared, point 2 compared, point 3 compared, conclusion? also can anyone help me think of points i could use in my essay? i'm having a blank and am having problems with this too.

I'm currently reading the three WL books from which we'll have to write our essay in the fall, and consequently started brainstorming a topic. We haven't received any guidelines from our teacher yet, but as the early bird catches the worm, I'd like to enquire some specifics here already. First of all, can I focus on merely two characters (one per book) or would it be better to broaden my horizons to include more? I already have a topic, but I'm not completely sure how to go about it. Should I compare these two characters - and if so, should I choose two that have common traits? And finally, how many words is a WL-essay? I know these are stupid questions, but I couldn't f…

Ummm yeah I joined here coz I'm fee ling extremely worried about my IOP. It's coming up in 4-5 weeks or something, not to mention our teacher has conviently gone away for those weeks So basically I just have no idea where to start... I've got my topic, I'm doing Chaucher and how he was one of the first poets to write in modern English and to just analysis his use of Language, using the Canterbury Tales as part of my memorised poem... But apart from that I have no idea where to go from there!! I can't really think of any creative way to present it, and I really do want to get a good mark on this as it's the only thing that counts this year lol Any help at all would be …

Hi, So I've studied Shakespeare before, and understood his language quite easily, but now we're studying John Donne, and since he lived around the same time I figured it wouldn't be too difficult to understand his poetry... but it is! The first poem we studies was okay, I didn't get it right away but after 3-4 times reading it I understood what it's about, but the one we're studying now I still don't get even after a bunch of times reading it - I need help, tips or something! Those of you who have studied him, what helped you to understand? Thanks

I have to compare the characters Mikage, Yuichi, Eriko, Satsuki and Hitoshi from Kitchen by Banana Yoshimoto with the characters Chikako, Mrs. Ota, Fumiko, The Inamura girl, Kikuji and Kikuji's father from Thousand Cranes by Yasunari Kawabata. This is in preparation for my world lit essay..... If you only know one of the books then please give me character thoughts and analysis on just the characters you know. Thanks!!

I'm rather confused right now... The English Course Companion, many of the notes on this site and various posts have said that a structure for World Lit Assignment 1 Comparative Essay should look like this: -Intro -Point of Comparison 1 -POC2 -POC3 -Conclusion Yet my English teacher, before school ended (we're supposed to get this done during our school's exam week, since we don't have any exams), told us to do it like this: -Intro -Work A -Work B, with references to Work A but mainly focusing on Work B -Conclusion And the structure above is one that was listed under "Never use." Nevertheless, an essay that I saw used a structure similar to above: -Intro -Work A -Work B -…

Here is the thing. We were told by the teacher to give in a title for our World Literature Essay 1, but I really dont know what topic to chose, this is largely because I dont know how to structure my World Literature Essay (or what the format is, or what the requirements are...) Does anyone have a general outline about the World Literature Essay for A1 English? I know that it has to be a comperative study, but I would also like to attain some mark schemes or a gerenal criteria perhaps. It would be very useful if someone could provide me with something like this... Thanks alot

For our Oral commentary, we are doing: Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte Othello by Shakespeare Much Ado About Nothing by Shakespeare The General Prologue of the Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer Is four the normal number of works studied? I acknowledge that Othello and Much Ado are rather simple, but Wuthering Heights is an intense book, and Chaucer will be difficult, considering we have only studied the prologue, not the body, so we can't relate well to the rest of the text. Plus... the language is vaguely archaic. I love all the works we have, but is it normal to do 4, and rather difficult ones at that? Is that the point?

OKay i have a world lit 1 assignment due and i would love to know if these thesiss (haha) are worthy or need to be phrased better. Basically, I need opinions and help too The relationships in Pedro Paramo and Chronicle of a Death Foretold between Pedro Paramo and Susana San Juan, and Santiago Nasar and Maria Cervantes personify the control women have over men thus reflecting Rulfo’s and Marquez’s view on the role of women in society. OR Through the passive aggressiveness of Father Renteria, from Pedro Paramo, and the villagers as a whole, in Chronicle of a Death Foretold, Rulfo and Marquez criticize/satirize society’s weak, maleable will and role in the deaths of the two…

So I have just finished my first draft of my world lit 2, and gotten it back from my teacher with a few comments What I did was option B (a creative essay), on The House of the Spirits by Isabel Allende my topic was basically focusing on how Ferula, Rosa and Clara, and Blanca influenced Esteban's character throughout the novel However, apparently my teacher thinks that I've basically written out a 1200 word plot summary I can see why she thinks this - my essay follows Esteban's life, which I guess essentially is the novel's story line but I didn't do this intentionally! I basically took 4 or 5 pivotal moments in his life.. and focused on those. but I guess I need to fix t…

My first World Lit Assignment is on the books Medea by Euripides and A Doll's House by Henrik Ibsen. I'm exploring the concept of motherhood in both the texts. I have thought of a few things such as the comparison of them as mothers, one leaves them the other kills them. The situation they are in. The difference of time and era. The Social Situation of Women. Now I kinda of seem stuck. If anybody could give me ideas to work on, would be of great help.

I was just wondering how useful the English Course Companion is for me, at the end of Year 1, in HL. I have the biology one and I was thinking of getting the one for chemistry, and considering getting the English one along with it. What does it contain, exactly, that could benefit me, especially since English doesn't have a set syllabus of things that I need to memorize? I'd probably use it for my IOC, World Lit I and II, and my finals. Thanks! And yes, I realize my grammar kind of failed in the subtitle. T_T Whoops...

I'm a bit confused , because my teacher said that we should use extra books , for our would lit essay and not just the books we compare ( in my case "metamorphosis" by Franz Kafka and "the outsider " by Albert Camus). He means for example :analysis by other academics about the books and so on. I just want to know whether my teacher is the only one who wants that , or if it's a necessary thing , in order get a good mark .

I have decided to do my world lit on the books perfume by patrick süskind and The Sailor Who Fell From Grace WithThe Sea by Yukio Mishima. I am analysing the first two chapters of both books and talking about the authors use of narrative techniques. However, I do not know exactly what to include as narrative techniques. One thing I am going to talk about the use of olfactory description in perfume, yet my problem isn't finding things to talk about in the books, more explaining what effect the technique creates for the audience or for the novel in general. Isn't it always like emphasis or for better understanding? and things along those lines. Also, of course authors use…

Hey guys, basically I was looking back at my WLA and the criteria before, and still don't understand why it got the grade it got. However when I asked my teacher she told me "it's probably because of your topic being cliche" she is still waiting for the examiner's report, so I will verify if that is the reason or not. So post your WLA titles on here, not because I'm redoing it or anything, so that others might havea better understanding of what a "6" or "7" essay title is like... mine was: "The role authority in Lorca’s The House of Bernarda Alba and Anouilh’s Antigone. To what extent can authorities be described as tyrants?" which received a 5, after about 9 drafts o…

Hey everyone, I'm doing my World Lit 2 right now, its a Detailed Study: Key Passage on Albert Camus's The Outsider. My passage is chosen from the final two pages where Meursault gets angry and shouts at the priest until the final line.
