I got accepted into the pre-ib program and realized that my high school only offers english a1 hl as first group! I am really scared, because I'm not sure if I'm ready for this. For now, my english is only at esl level 4 because I came here in grade 7( I'm in grade 9 now btw). I was imporving 1 level each year, so I guess by the end of next year my english would be almost as good as a normal Canadian? I heard that this is a really hard course to get a 5 on, and I need atleast a five on English to get accepted in a good university. HELP! I mean if I study harder than other students ( heard it's impossible to study any harder), would I have a chance on making it? Or should …

Hi, I'm using " Siddhartha" and " The Outsider" for my WL. I wanna talk bout how both main characters are so detached from the real world and how emotionless they both are but how they go and start changing. like Mersault starts to realize his friends and Siddhartha finally finds himself; but i really don't know how i should phrase it and i could definitely use some help. I had another choice of the relationship between Siddhartha and Kamala contrasting with Mersault and Mary but I'm not sure whther that would be a good topic. If there is any better topic which i can do please suggest. thank you, may all of us survive this 2 year program :-)

Hi, I've just begun the IB and in two weeks I have to do my IOP... I haven't even finished the book yet (Brave New World by Aldous Huxley) and now I have to commit to 15% of my overall grade. Can anyone give me some advice on how you began your preparations and how you decided which area to focus on? The cyllabus says you can do a number of activities like an oral expose, role play, or structured discussion. Which one did you do? Which one is the best option? Plus has anyone studied this novel and can give me some advice? Thanks so much.

So my IB English Teacher last year was a total...yeah, pretty bad teacher. For instance, our oral presentations: He didn't specify that they were part of our IB grade, and through his words, he implied it was a moreso practice exercise for our oral commentary. So we all tried our best, and so many people did poorly. He then justified himself and said he wrote it on a sheet (that he gave out last year in Pre-IB English 10, which half of the kids didn't even take) and yeah. Anyways, besides that, for our World Lit One, he also was extremely strict. I managed to barely get a 15/20 on my first draft, but that was still pretty low. Okay, so my main point: It seems that his gra…

Hi guys, I'm doing my senior year and will be taking my final exam in May 2011. Today I was given a list of some example of general questions on literature which are similar to those in the paper 2 final exam. My question is what book can I choose for my paper 2 exam? Could it be one that I wasn't taught at school but acceptable by the IB? Or do I have to go for books that were chosen by my school? (I mean might the school has some kinda agreement or registration with the IB on what books their students may use for the exam?) I'm new here and I'd appreciate summa your helpful information.

I'm writing my WLE, and part of the criterion definitely emphasises on personal engagement in the topic, so do i approach it sophisticately by using 'one may think...' or can i just cut straight into the personalized 'I' approach?? How much do you have to explicitly write your personal opinion?? any further advice on personal engagement for exam commentaries are also helpful

What are people doing for their poetry option for Paper 2? I'm stuck with Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, Dante's Inferno, Milton's Paradise Lost, and Donne's Holy Sonnets. My school chose some awful works, and it makes them extremely hard to answer any questions in the actual poetry section because my works are so plot-based. I can't exactly effectively answer a question on structure when Milton's literally a big mass of text all squished together on the page.

Hi! I'm comparing Like Water For Chocolate and Kitchen for my WL essay. Food seems like the best topic to compare for these two texts but i thought it might be too unoriginal since it is a common topic. So to narrow the topic down, I thought of some specific sub-topics relating to food: - Food as a symbol for love - Food as a metaphor for unexpressed emotions - Food as a motif of remembrance (memory) --> remembering one's true love through the wedding cake in Like Water and the katsudon in Kitchen What do you think? Do you have any other suggestions? Thanks!

Help! I know we are suppose to integrate text within our world lit for good marks. What if i did not do that- would i lose marks? My topic is how are societies reflected in Text A and Text B. And i took the ways characters are similar in Text A and Text B such as how their habits, fears etc reflect different aspect of their societies. However this is the problem! Text A reflect one society. Text B reflect another society. If i integrate the two text within one body paragraph- it would be extremely confusing and lack any sort of flow within my essay. I have some IOP ideas (for Catcher in the Rye) but I'm not sure which one to choose and would like to ask your opinion on which one you think would be 'better' to do my IOP on. For my first option for my IOP, I was thinking about doing a pseudo-analytical IOP in which I will psychologically analyzing the character of Holden Caulfield from J.D. Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye from three different psychologists' point of view (Freud and Kiley, and ), using the premise that Holden is most likely in therapy at the beginning of the the novel as justification for this idea. Hello Everyone! I am new here . I will start doing IB in a few days and I will apply mainly to Ivy League Universities for Literature or Philosophy or Law. So my question is about English: Currently I have chosen English A2 HL, but over the summer I was wondering whether it'd be better for me to change from A2 to A1 HL. I mean do Ivy League Universities prefer English A1 rather than English A2? If I get A1, how much harder is it going to be than A2? Is it easier to score a 7 in A1 or A2 and how much easier? I speak and write in English pretty well, and I LOVE Litearature (that is the main reason why I want to change it ). Please reply as soon as possible!!! I desperately…

Hello everyone! My world lit 1 essay is supposed to be in the making as I speak, but oh how distant a good thesis seems to be! Everyone in my class has already chosen a topic (note: margin of error when I speak of "everyone" could be considerable, but let's disregard that, it certainly feels like everyone around me has an IB-perfect, very specific, intellectual, insightful topic and a beautifully formulated thesis statement). It appears to me that I'm the only one having any problem with it (how tragic, no doubt the most recurrent deja-felt of my life). I would go so far as to say it has brought me some severe anguish. So, enough said, let's get to the point. The three bo…

Hello! I need to write a commentary on the beginning of Jane Eyre. Specificly, the symbolism and purpose of the mentioning/descriptions Jane reads from the book "The History of Birds". I have already written a commentary for this, and my teacher gave me a 4 :/ What should I specificly do to make my writing better? What should it have? Its propably, the second commentary I have ever written in my life (Just started IB English). It is extremely important for me to score really high on this commentary.. I take standard level A1 English and I have absolutely no idea how the IOC works. Our teacher seems to keeping it secret so I don't know around how much time we have, how long the extract will be etc. I only understand that the IOC is a commentary that has to be done on an extract chosen by the teacher out of the 2 books that we have read. Okay so I have to read these two books (which I already did) and then choose one of these two questions to answer. Problem is I don't know where to start with any of them! Pedro Paramo was extremely confusing and House of the Spirits was just ehhhh. These are the two questions, any ideas on where to start will be greatly appreciated: - Acquiring material wealth or rejecting its attractions has often been the base upon which writers have developed interesting plots. Compare the way writers of Pedro Paramo and The house of the Spirits develop such motivations. - "Some works of literature are universal and timeless; others seem specific to one place and/or time." Hi guys, I'm starting my Diploma program in the Fall and I've decided to study law. My current HL levels are: B&M HL Econ HL Math HL Standard Levels: Chinese SL English SL Biology SL I'm aiming for a 7,7,6 for my IB HL scores, even though it is quite impossible. But I did get an average of 90%+ for my sophomore year. I was wondering if I should take English HL, because I've been hearing from my peers that I have to take English HL for law, and to be honest I am not all that great with literary analysis. I am adequate in finding themes and symbols... Anyone have any suggestions/ideas of what I should do?

I've alread choosen the novels: "A Doll House" and "Chronicle of a Death Foretold". What i'm struggling with is what similarity these two have that i can write a whole 5 paragraph essay on? I was thinking of something along the lines of prejudiced viewpoints on gender roles particularly towards woman? But i know i have to be more specific than just that, or is it fine? My teacher gave us ideas like talk about a specific object of symbolism if we'd wanted such as light or something but i don't think that'll fit in with my two chosen novels. If you think my idea on gender equality is fair enough, could you possibly hint where in these novels they portray this, evidence of p…

Which verb tense would you use for an English essay? I know most of you will recommend to use present tense, but what about those strange cases? for example: In an essay, would it be correct to say: "before he is born" or "before he was born"? also another example: "he wanted to find out what kind of person he was in the past" or "he wanted to find out what kind of person he is in the past?" If there are exceptions regarding the use of present tenses for essays, please enlighten me!

Hi all, I am planning my essay question for the WL1 Essay to be ‘A comparison between the presentation of misfortune in ‘Hedda Gabler’ by Henrik Ibsen and ‘The Waiting Years’ by Fumicko Enchi’. There is quite a lot of misfortune in both the two texts, in Hedda its generally at the end, when she committs suicide. With the waiting years misfortune is present throughout the entire book... I only intend on writing about the main misfortunes though. But, is this question too broad? (some of my friends have been saying so...) Thanks

This is what I came up with so far - "The lookism in Frankenstein" - "The importance of memory in 1984" - "The characterization of Winston in 1984" - "The manipulative technique apparent in 1984" Don't really have any topic for Ivan Denisovich because I didn't really read carefully..... Also...I couldn't really think of any topic that is apparent in both Frankenstein and 1984 HELP!!
