Hi! So by the end of this summer, I plan to finish my World Lit Paper 1 as well as my EE (I'm halfway through my EE )! ^^ The thing is, I'm not sure about how much time I should spend with my World Lit paper. I do have a lot of volunteering on the side and I was planning to cancel some if I have to. Can someone tell me about how many hours I should set aside for my WL? I know people work at different paces so a range would be good Sadly, I'm not the type to know exactly how many hours I should spend brainstorming, doing drafts, proofreading, etc. @__@; My friends do it so well. I'm just starting to learn.. >_< (If you could tell me how many hours I should spend…

Hi. I've been trying to work on my World Lit essay, but i keep getting stuck. I think my topic is slightly ambiguous and i was wondering, could anyone please help me narrow it down a bit more? The two plays im working on are, Ghost's by Henrik Ibsen, and School for Wives by Moliere. currently my essay topic is something like this: A study of the female characters in Henrik Ibsen's Ghost's and Moliere's School for wives in order to reflect the role of women in their contemporary societies. The problem is that in School for wives, on one hand he shows the general side of women, while the main female character is completely opposite due to the way she was raised to be comp…

I admit I am not the best at English, but my school requires English A1 HL. For summer assignments I've been assigned some books to read, and I need to analyze themes for them. How do you go about identifying themes and other important literary elements? It seems that every time I try to identify something, I don't do it right.

Ok I'm a little over half way through summer and have 2 of the 4 books I need read done. But the last book I'm gonna read is the hardest. I have to read Atlas Shrugged which is 1070 pages and the font the size of the bible text. I never would of even thought that I could finish this book in a summer without any other distractions. Any advice on how to finish it? There is an assignment with the book: Give three important quote's and tell why they are important, for each chapter. All I am going to do so far is read a couple of paragraphs of each chapter and give quotes on them. Any other ideas? Each chapter is around 20-40 pages and there are about 30.

Hi, I'm taking HL English and I wanted to do some sort of preparation or anything over the summerso I can get a 6 or 7 (as opposed to a 5 which I'm "guaranteed" to get). How can I improve my English skills (i.e. essay writing, presentations, analyzing literary works, etc.)? I'm willing to do anything, and I think HL English is my hardest subject (in terms of getting a high level). I have two months, and that is a lot of time. Maybe there are books I can read (or is there an "IB book list") so I can get slightly ahead, or are there textbooks for English (if there are, please suggest and links would be very much appreciated). I'm kind of leaving this open-ended, to some …

can some one tell me what is the exact format of engA1 sl... i know that sl students have to study 11works.. in papaer 2 there are different sections like drama, poetry, novels and then general questions it is just impossible to do all 11 works perfectly, so you need to do few works in depth for the paper. i don't know from which part what comes, can anyone tell me that? i also don't know in which way we need to choose the works to write in our essay in paper2.. any advice is whole heratedly welcomed....

Hello. I'm starting with the IB this fall, so I have to figure out what subjects I should get. I'm not an English native speaker, but I handle it pretty well, I'd say - I've studied it for nine years now. Should I take English A1 at HL? Is it doable? What are the requirements? Is it doable especially since I'm thinking of taking Italian B also at HL? Or would it mean too much work? Thanks a lot.

Tomorrow or the next day I have my IOP. I have only had the past two days to prepare for it. I plan on analyzing revenge as a motive/driving force in Beowulf. I am part of my schools very first class and my English teacher really has no idea what she is doing. I could really use some pointers on how to make my presentation better.

My world lit draft is due tomorrow or Thursday at the latest, and all I have is a topic. Does anyone think they can give me some ideas or pointers? I have missed the classes where we went over the criteria and such about World Lit so I actually have no clue what I'm doing Basically I'm comparing Meursault and Ivan Denisovich (Protagonists). I'm comparing how they both generally live for themselves and what they believe in, instead of adapting to the norms of civilization or satisfying others. I was thinking how Shukhov strives for self dignity and emotional/spiritual realization within himself and how Meursault has his own belief-system going on. Meursault is more sucke…

Hi, i've just recently started my world lit and i've thought of a topic but i dont know if it's appropriate. My topic is comparing the use of pride and honor in both "antigone" and "a doll's house". Even if you haven't read the works i'd just like to know if the subject ive chosen is appropriate, and, if it isn't, how to improve it.

I just finished writing my World Lit. paper 2. It is due tomorrow! Well, the copy for my english 20 mark. It is so unfair though, my teacher just simply stated that he is not going to give my class any feedback and he is just going to mark our papers (that will go into our english 20 mark) and then we get a class to fix it up for IB (without any feedback from him!!!) This is the reason why I'd love to hear some feedback on my paper! Thanks! Oh by the way, I did my paper on Chronicle of a Death Foretold by Gabriel Gracia Marquez, and focused on the society’s social code. (It's not that long, a little bit over a thousand words )

I have chosen to write my World Lit. on Hubris in Agamemnon and Oedipus, but am stuck on how to actually write the essay. My teacher hasn't quite explained how to write it. Is it an analytical essay? Do i just retell what happened and what effect it has or what? I am very lost, also as too what I can write about, I have examples from the plays, where hubris is seen, but i don't know what to do with it from there. Any help would be much appreciated!

I was recently assigned my world literature 1 assignment, and I chose to write it on the poetry of Wistawa Szymborska, and Czeslaw Milosz. I have the poems in mind that I want to use, but does IB have to approve the poems we choose/the school uses, or can we use any poems we want to (from the two poets)? My teacher stated that we can use any of the poetry written by the two authors, but he's a little new to IB, so can anyone confirm his statement?

In my world lit paper I did a comparison of XXXXXXXXX between The Visit (translated from German) and The Scarlet Letter.(English) I think I compared the two works to a point where I can get good (although not perfect) marks, but I really didn't discuss culture that much at all. I mentioned culture in my conclusion, but that was really it. Will this kill my grade? When I looked at the rubric online, it says that you need to discuss culture, so this is why I'm worrying. The rubric seemed current. I'm sorry for bugging you all with my questions lol.

If anyone has any ideas about what this poem might mean please post it ASAP! thank you! Here is the poem: Game After Supper by Margaret Atwood This is before electricity, it is when there were porches. On the sagging porch an old man is rocking. The porch is wooden, the house is wooden and grey; in the living room which smells of smoke and mildew, soon the woman will light the kerosene lamp. There is a barn but I am not in the barn; there is an orchard too, gone bad, its apples like soft cork but I am not there either. I am hiding in the long grass with my two dead cousins, the membrane grown already across their throats. We hear crickets and our own hearts close to our …

Hi! My class started the World Lit papers about a month ago, but my teacher only realized last week that she made a mistake when she listed the books we could use for Paper 1. She told us we could use Ivan for Paper 1, which we can't, so now those of us that used Ivan for Paper 1, have to do our papers over (school is over in just a week). Now I already took care of my Paper 1 topic, however I'm having a bit of a problem with Paper 2. In order to salvage at least a part of my Paper 1 that I had written before my teacher realized her error, I attempted to make it into a detailed study of Ivan. My problem is I'm not sure if I'm doing the right thing or if my topic for Pap…

I have to have a rough draft for both World Lit Papers tomorrow (yes the great procrstination of IB). My approved general topic for my Paper 1 is the "misunderstanding of the indivudual in The Stranger and Anna Karenina". I'm not exactly sure how to do this. Any ideas?? Both works deal largely with individuals who are misunderstood by society and it is a major theme in both. However, I am not sure how to compare and contrast the theme in the two works. My Paper 2 approved topic is "the role of the gods in Medea". Because the gods were believed to control the fate of humans, the gods are a major part of the play. I tihnk I will focus on how Euripides seems to have a "deb…

My books are One day in the life of Ivan Denisovich by Solzhenitsyn, and Crime and punishment by Dostoyevsky. My first draft is due in two days! The topic I chose was to address Generosity as a characteristic, specificially within the characters Luzhin and Caesar. This was a last minute topic that I did not quite understand, but nonetheless it was approved. I have almost finished my essay, but going over it I do not think that my approach to the topic was correct, and that I did not have a focus, or that my points are irrelevant. Hello I would like to find out from you guys when writing your World literature assignment 1 (the comparative essay) is it fine to focus on one section from both books linked by a particular genre or is it necessary that I compare both books on the whole in general? Specifically speaking, I am suppose to compare one of Anton Chekov stories (which is a short story about 50 pages long) and August Strindberg: The father (which is a play with about 36 pages long). I felt that between the two books, there is one area common but it is a short or rather moderate section from both books. What do you guys say? Or what have your teachers told you? My school is doing IB for the fi…

Because I've read that you have to do something about the culture of the countries where this language is spoken .. ? Is that all it's required ? Do we have to intera…

I did my mock exam paper 2 today for English A1. The teacher gave us the question: Compare and contrast the ways in which the author of two novels characterize their character and how does it have a dramatic effect? In the exam, I took this to mean when the you see something differently to the characters of the novel because you know more about the plot. So I discussed how setting to develop the chaaracters, dialogue and contrast their use of sound, etc. Then their impact on the plot to the readers. With regards to the dramatic effect I approached it by saying that the characterisation helped to emphasize the theme etc. Do you think I would score lower because it a way …

Hi Im writing my world literature 1 on Season of migration to the north by Tayeb Salih and Kiss of the spider woman by Manuel Puig. My topic is about how lack of societal constraints acts as a liberating factor for the protagonists (Mustafa; Valentin & Molina) in terms of education and sexual relations. I started off my outline by giving information on how Mustafa had sexual relations with a number of women (from well-structured, conventional families...) and how Valentin and Molina were able to engage in homosexual relationship due to their imprisonment (isolation from the outside world)... But the thing is I need evidence. . . I've only found about 7 quotations from…

My teacher gave us a few ways of memorising quotes for paper 2: -in class (not your language A1 class), try to integrate quotes into conversation, but make sure it does fit in! -quote competition with your friends - Maybe what we could do hear is post a quote which is a good, strong quote, without looking at your play/novel/etc. Say where it's from, so if someone is reading over it, they may see a good quote and learn from it. And it can help you practice your quotes!! (If this shouldn't be in this forum, please move it and sorry!! ^-^) Okay, I'll start: Cat on a Hot Tin Roof: "You been passing the buck. This disgust with mendacity is disgust with yourself." - Big Daddy
