Is writing an external about intertextuality a good idea? I would really love to compare how other literary work influenced a shape of two books and how differently these references were placed by the authors but I'm not sure if it is an appropriate place (generally students at my school compare a motive...). And there can be also a problem with writing everything within 1500 words... Oh, and I'm going to write my world lit. essay basing on The Master and Margarita and The Plague. thanks for your help IB fighters:P

Anna Karenina and A Doll's House are definitely the two books I am going to use for the essay, because I haven't read House of the Spirits. What topics and ideas does everyone have, because I can't think of anything. What is the best way to get going on the essay?

Okay, first of all, what works are you all doing? I'll start: Hamlet- Shakespeare The Crucible- Arthur Miller The Importance of Being Earnest- Oscar Wilde Antigone- Sophocles My teacher usually gives out a sheet of possible areas/topics to analyze for each work that we do. If it seems that other people are doing the same works then I'll type whatever I have and then we can discuss answers etc. Sound okay to you guys?

I've heard that the world limit is flexible - that you can write up to 1650 words and you will not be penalised. Is this accurate?

So I know its 1:30 hours for an SL A1 commentary, but I've heard that in math exams for instance, you get 5 minutes to go through the questions and read them. Is there anything similar in the A1 commentary where you are given time to see the texts? edit: okay I got my question answered. its amazing how much you could accomplish by calling your IB supervisor and asking we've grown too dependent on the internet for no apparent reason

hi guys just a question on the paper 2 exam for english HL. I have just been looking over some past paper questions (in preparation for the final IB exams 2009). Our class studied drama for the exams, but i noticed that there are "general questions on literature" which no one (at least in my school) has ever said a word about. Maybe its just paranoia coming into the final exams but I was wandering if there is any disadvantage to answering these questions? Do the examiners look at it negatively, could someone please tell me a bit about them because I really haven't got a clue Thanks

I'm a little confused on what exactly I'm supposed to discuss in my IOP. I'm doing an analytical one on Their Eyes Were Watching God. Do I pick references that support my thesis statements and then analyze them using literary techniques? Would those be my points? Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I'm freaking out right now.

It's senior year, second semester, and I'm counting down the days until graduation. However, the class I'm stressing over is English. For the colleges I've applied to, I have to get 6 or 7 on the HL English IB exam to earn any credits. Truthfully, I'm just wondering how much I can slack off to still earn that but I am a little stressed because both of my World Lit papers were written the night before and are not high quality. If anyone has taken the test already, could you explain what scores you got and the effort you put in the class to get them? Or if you know anything about Paper 1 and would like to explain because I have no idea and it's worth 50%!! thanks in adva…

My Grade 11 english teacher seems to expect us to write our world lit. without the use of the books. We read them, took notes as we did, and then he collected them. How are we supposed to write a compare-contrast essay from a set of notes on books I read months ago? The funniest bit is that he suggested amazon.ca to get our quotes. AMAZON.CA! Does anyone see a problem with that!? I sure do! The "quotations" are only about ten to twelve words cut from the scentence and even then, the damned quotations are riddled with spelling mistakes. On top of all that, the page numbers are off so don't even think about using them! I really hope that nobody else has to go through this b…

Hey Guys, I am doing a practise IOP on LIke water for chocolate and I am going to answer this question I created: "To what extent is Mama Elena's violence and cruelty towards Tita due to her own forbidden love?" First I am going to say why it is by saying that Mama Elena's own experience had made her bitter and because she didn't get what she wanted she is making Tita experience the same using the family tradition as an excuse. As a result of her experience, it has made her reject love, nourishment of others because she doesn't want to experience losing a loved one again. However, Mama Elena's cruelty and violence is not primary due to her own experience because it is …

I just got the results of my first internal oral back a while ago and my mark is 25/30. I saw it in the mark boundary section that a 7 is between 26 and 30. Does that mean it is now impossible for me to get a 7 in English? Or can I compensate by getting better marks in the other areas, such as the world lit essay?

Hey all, I was just curious to know what things are considered (mark-wise) to make up the English A1 HL score for the IB program. My teacher told me it is: IOP WL1 WL2 IOC Paper 1 Paper 2 I was curious to know, because I've not seen any mark boundaries that include the IOP. I've only seen them with INDIVIDUAL ORAL, which I would assume is the IOC. Does anyone know what happens to the IOP grade? Thanks!

Manipulation is very evident in each play, Torvald uses his ability to control wealth and his total power in the patriarchal society as a means of making Nora do what he wants, on the other hand, Natasha uses the affection that Andrei has for her to manipulate him and his sisters to her advantage. Is this a good thesis? My topic is "Compare Natasha and Torvald as manipulators"

My biggest weakness in terms of analyzing literature is definitely symbolism. I have very limited knowledge about different symbols and I was hoping we could start a conversation, where we would present different symbols and learn them. I think this would be very helpful for our A1 languages. As I said, I don't know that much about symbols, but in my most recent essay I analyzed bees and flowers as a symbol of fertility and reproduction and ... that's about it. See? I'm not all that good. What are the most essential symbols every IB student should know?

I'm doing GCSEs now (Pre-IB) and I'm going to take IB French A1 self-taught next year because I love the language and also because it is my mother tongue. I wonder what books some of you guys have read for French A1 or A2, that could really help me thanks in advance. PS : I have read some of the advice concerning opting for a self-taught subject, there are loads of teachers in my school ready to help me so that won't be too much of a problem.

Hi Everyone! My IOP is due in a week and a bit and I was wondering if a monologue or a soliloquy would be a good choice Most of my classmates are thinking of doing analytical IOPs and I wanted to do something different besides the usual commentary analysis Also, how would it be marked as I cannot provide any analysis on literary effects on the novel thru monologue Any response would be awesome! Thanks!!

Not sure if this is the right part of the forum to put this up on...but anyway. I've found a Peking opera version of Hedda Gabler! I haven't watched through all of it because I don't actually know a lot about Peking opera, but I've watched snippets and it's pretty interesting how the story translates into another culture just like that...shows how universal it can be! The links are below. It's in two parts. There are English subtitles in the clip. The video loads very fast for me, but that's because I live in China, so I don't know how fast the videos are outside of China. Well, have a look if you're interested! http://v.youku.com/v_show/id_XMjI0MDYwNDA=.html http://v.y…

English has one of the lowest averages in the IB subjects. Has the IBO given out any set of mistakes that must be avoided? Any mistake that has been repeatedly made? I see lots of people with 7's in everything and a 5 in English. You can't possibly say they didn't study or work hard enough, so what is it that's causing the difficulty?

I have a question not really regarding myself, but I am interested to know. Would it be possible for me to self-study a A1 language if my school does not have a teacher that speaks that language? For instance, no teacher at my school speaks Chinese, so could I self-study Chinese A1? I think there might arise a problem when it comes to the IAs.

Here is the thing... I've got a really low mark this semester 1 assessment, and our teacher was telling some of the students that some of us need to go down to English B and some of us won't pass A1. (which isn't something that teacher's should say to their students, though it is good to know the reality.) She didn't say any names but she gave some of us this look (you know?) And after that I lost hope. feeling depressed and all... well the point is, I don't exactly know how to study A1 texts. And I am having trouble studying them (due to the fact that I don't enjoy the books that we have in our syllabus) and for all I know, our teacher didn't actually tell us …

Basically I have a (sort of) topic: I'm doing Jane Eyre, 1. Religion vs Love in Jane Eyre 2. St. John Rivers ( in terms of religion, love, morals) something like that...see, my topic is kinda going in a million directions, and I'm just not sure if I'm doing it right. My teacher looked at it a little and said that I was making it too formal, like an essay..so should I make it really informal? Like I'm talking? And people keep talking about literary devices..should I incorporate those? My teacher hasnt said anything abt that.. I'd like to include a few bits on how St. John is 'hard and cold' (If anyone here's read the book, if they remember, Bronte 99% of the time uses…

Okay so my topic is on the motives to kill and how it affects societies perception of the murders. The two books i'm using are Chronicle of a Death Foretold by Marquez and The Stranger by Camus. Firstly, what should i put on the cover page. Second, when writing the essay, am i basically writing a comparison essay where i use quotes and all that good stuff. ALso, so i have to have a bibliography, footnotes etc. Do i have to use literary elements to show the cultural aspects and how they were used to condone or praise the murder? Thats basically why i'm confused about and if you have any other suggestions that would really help. THanks.
