Hello all, In lieu of the up and coming IB exams, I was wondering as to whether any of you may have a few tips on preparing for the unseen commentary- I'm terribly nervous and know that 2 hours is NOT long enough (for me) to finish and produce a strong analysis and coherent commentary. How do you time manage effectively when writing? What is the best thing to do in preparation? Thank you, Pathos

My teacher made us write down some really rough ideas for our IOP in class one day. One of my ideas was to talk about Ophelia's song and my teacher said I can do that but I would have to focus on her lines. Does that mean I should focus on her lines in the song? I don't really know what to talk about for my IOP, since our teacher didn't tell us much about it. Can someone please give me some advice?

Hey, so I finally came up with my thesis for IB World Lit 1, I wanted to know what your opinions on it were: In both The Metamorphosis and The Stranger, the authors make critical judgments of society. Through the observations of the protagonist and his interactions with other characters, the authors judge society based on the fact that people must conform to its ideals or else the subject is viewed as inferior, society has the nature to impose rationality where there is not, and society rashly judges people based on what is has established to be 'normal.' Thanks for any feedback!

I have no idea what to do. I'm also trying to figure out what I want to do for the WL2 paper, because apparently the book I don't use for this has to be used for the WL2. I'm thinking of comparing the nonexistent knight and 6 characters for WL1 if it's possible to do an analysis of symbols in the Metamorphosis. or maybe rewrite some of it from the parents POV. What could I do comparing The Nonexistent Knight and 6 characters? Thanks.

I want to write about the extremes of temperature and how they affect the character(s) in the books "One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich" and "The Outsider", but I am having trouble deciding on exactly how to phrase it. So far I have two potential titles: "To what extent do extremes of temperature determine survival or destruction in "One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich" and "The Outsider"? "What is the significance of the extremes of temperature in "One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich" and "The Outsider"? Which is better? I have two teachers and they are telling me different things so I really don't know. Are there any better ones you can think of? Thanks in adv…

I was reading the subject reports for May 2009, and the examiners keep stressing the importance of the topic title in the World Literature Papers. I'm doing narrative technique in The Stranger and The Metamorphosis, but I can't narrow it down further. My teacher told me to define what I'll be discussing in the introduction, but I still feel like the topic title is a bit too general. Any suggestions?

I'm currently doing French A1 self-taught and I want to know how many poems make up 1 'work'. How many poems do you think I need to do? Does anybody do poetry for their part 3? Should they be linked by theme? I seriously need help. I have been stirring about this along time I've been considering novels but they seem hard to answer a Paper 2 question on.

What's the difference between interpreting and analysing a text, i.e. for which parts in A1 do we need to do what? I guess the difference is somewhat that for interpreting, we further need to include our own opinion? If so, is it then right to identify that we need to... analyse for paper 1 (unseen paper) analyse for part 2 and part 4 (oral commentary (questions on passages) and oral presentation) but interpret for paper 2 (part 3, answers written at least two of the three books) - or is this simply a commentary/opinion? thanks!!

Ok, so currently working on the first draft of my english world lit essay. The topic I have thus far, I thought would be interesting and hopefully not done repetitively over the years, but I also wanted to know if it was any good. Topic: The antagonists in Hedda Gabler and The House of Bernarda Alba are justifiable because they fall victim to their ids due to the society they have been placed in. My teacher said to make sure our topics are something discussable, something that does not have a definite answer within the text. Help please and thank you for reading my post!!

I'm really worried about my friend and I was wanting to have something to tell him to see what his chances are. He told me when he submitted his essays for the world lit assignment 1 and 2 they were of poor quality and the word count was low/miscounted. I don't want to ask the coordinator about his situation since he'll think that I'm getting into other people's business but I really care a lot about my friend. Will this automatically discredit him from getting the IB Diploma, or is it possible for him to turn it around with his other submitted documents/tests? Personally, I fear the worse is going to come, but I'd like some sort of confirmation or something of the sort. …

Hi! Well, now's the time to start writing the first draft for WL paper 1. I've read quite a lot of different guidelines (provided by IBO, my teacher and forum users) and I feel quite motivated to do good. However, some questions arose: Is the topic "How do literary features enforce the idea of Mama Elena and Esteban Trueba being tyrants?" (Characters of"Like Water for Chocolate" and "The House of the Spirits") OK to approach? What's the main aim of this paper? Whether I need to focus more on the literary features, analysing their effect or just backing up the arguments of the characters mentioned being tyrants with literary features? For example; if one of the novels has…

My English teacher and a couple of other people confronted me that I have a speaking problem, which isn't terrible, but not very good for someone who wants to make a very good English grade. It is a combination of these things: - I lack good organization to help my ideas flow when I'm speaking - I stutter (kind of) my sentence beginnings - I speak in fragments sometimes; I'll stop myself and will start over like a sputtery engine. One of the theories we came up with is that I experience an unnecessary nervousness and also that I think faster than I speak... I really want to improve my speaking skills before my Oral Commentary next year, so I am taking precautions now so …

Hello all, In regards to world.lit paper one is it necessary to discuss the issue of the translation within the essay. Both of the works I have chosen are works in translation, and I am looking at the language used, within the translated versions to convey theme. Hence, it is particularly necessary to analyse the differences between, say, a certain word in its original form and its translation? Thank you, Pathos

Hello all, I am writing a commentry for english on the poem "The Wind" by Ted Hughes, and am getting a little stuck (this is my first commentry). Any notes on the poem, or resources related to it, would be greatly appreciated. In particular, I have a few questions: -What is the theme of the poem? Our teacher has given us next to nothing as far as guidance on the format of WL2 goes, and they are due this upcoming Friday. I was wondering if it would be appropriate to take a play (Master Harold and the Boys) and turn part of it into a continuous piece of prose. For example instead of something like this: Sam: <dialogue> Hally: <dialogue> <stage directions> It would read like: "<dialogue>," Sam said with a smile, despite that he was beginning to grow irritated with Hally's superiority. "<dialogue>" responded Hally with his usual grin. Sam <stage directions> as he thought about what Hally had just said. (obviously it would be somewha…

1. My teacher says no one can have the same topic for WL in an IB class. Given that our graduating class is a size of seventy people, this is rather impossible. Is this true? 2. My teacher also claims that you are not allowed to analyze the same book twice in WL 1 and 2. Is this true?

I have been given back my first draft of the essay at the end of last week and the final copy is due in on Tuesday, I personally feel this isn't long enough and wanted opinions on this. Also I am having trouble with a few things, my title is 'How is the Role of Society Explored in 'The Outsider' and 'Antigone'?' my teacher seems to have only commented on spelling and grammer issues and a few times she has written 'explain', what I don't understand is what i can do when she writes 'simplistic', does anyone on here know how I can make it more sophisticated she ahsn't told me why it is simplistic just that it is, and I can't ask her because it is half term and we have a week…
