This summer I got a whole lot of work to do - do my extended essay (which will be on Salvador Allende's presidency) but this isn't the focus of my ranting today - I must read I know why the caged bird sings and Things fall apart. I've got to write three commentaries on Caged Bird, one dealing with Imagery, another with Angelou's use of diction/figurative language, and a last one for a personal discovery/realization. For TFA, I've got to write two commentaries; one on Achebe's use of Imagery proverbs/Ibo vocabulary and another on Achebe's use of foils. The interesting thing is that WE [the students] select our own passages and do the commentaries …

Hi, everyone! This is my first post. I will be starting IB this fall. I've decided to take Biology HL, Chem HL and need to decide what my third HL should be. I'm thinking of taking either my A1 Language or my A2 Language as my third HL. I'm at the same level in both languages. Which would you recommend me to take? (I plan to study a science degree later and will have no use for my language higher.) Which is easier? Thanks for your help.

Hi all, I just did my first IB-standard mandarin exam and realised that IM SO SCREWED!! So, since it seemed to help in maths and chem, I'm looking for any past papers. No one at my school happened to get any off the net, while the site we used was up. Does anyone have any/can tell me where to find some?? (Oh and relevant markschemes would be preferable) Thanks in advance.

Heya. Well, I'm doing my World Literature 2 (comparison) essay on “The Sailor Who Fell from Grace with the Sea” by Yukio Mishima, and “The Metamorphosis” by Franz Kafka. We can also do "The Outsider/The Stranger" for our essay, but I want to save that for my commentary (because that book rocks). I'm having quite a bit of trouble (as often is the case when I post on here) with detirmining if my thesis and ideas for a comparison are good enough for this kind of essay. A "working copy" of our essay is due at the end of the school year (June 16), and I'm passing in the outline tomorrow. The good copy is due the first day back after summer. Well, anyway, if you don't mind, co…

Hi everyone, I have my Chinese B SL exam next monday. I was wondering has anyone done the exam last session and for paper 2, what level of language is expected. It says at least 300 words, so if I write 400 it's more than enough? If anyone is helpful enough, can I PM them a pre-written essay and see if it deserves a 7? Thanks, Forester.

How does your teacher organise Language B Orals (not the individual orals, but the other ones you're supposed to do)? In my case, it seems like I will not really need to do any real kind of presentation, she will instead mark me randomly when I speak about topics in class.

Due to schedule difficulties, both Spanish HL and SL are mixed together in the Spanish classes. (I'm only in IB I, they split up next year) I'm one of the best in my class at learning the language, and therefore my teacher encouraged me to take HL. However, there's only a few of us-- (the others taking HL have some sort of spanish background, though it's still their second language) So I'm the only one who was completely new to Spanish going into high school. All our teacher has told us in class relates to the SL assessments, so I'm curious to know what's added for the HL... or are they simply more strict with their scores? I don't know if the other languages follow t…

Hey guys, I am currently in year one of IB English HL A1. I am soon going to start the process of writing my second world lit paper. The books available are Chronicle of Death Foretold, Hero of Our Time (World Lit Books) and The Great Gatsby, Pride and Prejudice (normal text reading) Since, there are 3 options to base a world lit 2 essay on, I think I would be most interested in the third choice where one needs to analyze a theme, idea or an important passage from the world lit books. I cannot decide a topic from the books above stated. Can someone please suggest me a topic? Please help as my world lit 2 essay is due soon. Thanking you all in advance. Sinc…

I'm writing my extended essay on Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice (English A2), so now I wonder, can I use Pride and Prejudice in other IB tasks, such as the WL? (Swedish A1) I really hope so, for what I've understood you must use 3 different works for WL1+2, and there is only 4 works to choose from and one of the works concerned I really don't like to work with. Thanks

.. and now I have to find a completly new topic. She told us we could use any World Literature works in any part of the course, however now she has figured out that only the works in part 1 can be used for WL1. So this means I will have to work with "the Old Man and the Sea" by Hemingway although I really, really, don't want to. Well, I guess I'll have to live with that. So, now, I'm forced to compare "the Old Man and the Sea" with "Pride and Prejudice". Personally I think the books are quite different from each other, so I have a hard time finding a relating aspect to compare. Do you guys have any suggestions? The only thing I can come up with is language, or maybe char…

I'm taking the standard level exam soon and I got predicted a pretty low score. I know I'm not the best speaker, but my writing is ok. The teacher I have now, honest doesn't know what she's doing. Over the past year we haven't learned much of anything. Although I know that some of it is my fault, I feel I deserve higher than what she predicted me. Anyways, I'm just wondering what I can do in preparation for the exam? Like are there any strategies for paper 1? Ie, look for key words and tenses of verbs / things like that? And as of paper 2, aside from format what else should I keep notice of? I thank you for reading, and hopefully someone would help =/

I'll start IB in September and I'm moving from Germany to Wales for that. So, I have to decide which one I want to take. I really want to take English A1 but I don't know if my English is fluent enough. I had an IELTS score of 8 but if I took English A1 I'd have to drop German altogether because it would be really stupid if I took German A2. I'd just like to hear what you think, Caro21

Hi! So, in my world lit paper I am comparing Chekhov and Garcia Lorca's uses of verses, songs, different languages, and quotes from other literature to do certain stuff within their works. (Wow, that's descriptive, but I'm trying to keep this concise.) Now, in The House of Bernarda Alba, Adela asks Bernarda why people used to say "Holy Barbara, blessed on high May your name be written in the sky With holy water written high?" Now, I was thinking about discussing how this quote foreshadows Adela's suicide due to the fact that the statement is usually said after seeing a shooting star, and some people believe that when a person dies a shooting star falls for their d…

Did anyone else have to do this work? If so, what exactly is meant by the "nature of theatrical fiction" and how does this relate to the role of the player king in the work? I have to do a seminar on the role of the player king in the piece and I am planning on discussing the relationship between art and life, the levels of illusion and the nature of theatrical fiction but I think I'm confusing myself on the last argument and now I don't know exactly what it means.

eeeeek I'm getting desperatee noww! We spent so long doing a million texts for our orals in Year 12, of which we could only choose one anyway, and now we've ended up rushing through our texts for our EXAMS anywayyy is anyone doing 1984 and/or The Handmaid's Tale and got some good notes that i could use? I've tried to do some on my own, but English isn't my strongest point so i want to make sure I'm not missing anything out. What i particularly have problems with is comparing two texts which is vital for the exam:( so if anyone has comparison notes as well, that would be completely and utterly great too!

Well, it's that time for me. My teacher assigned us the WL2A yesterday, and it's due next Friday. Of course, it's only just the first rough draft. However, I'd like to know any suggestions and hints. My WL2A will be about So Long a Letter and A Doll's House. On the other hand, I need some tips for some WL1 topics because my original topics on From Sleep Unbound and House of the Spirits were rejected. Can anyone offer some FSU & HOS ideas or topics for comparison? Any and all comments are welcome! =]

Night Wind by Christopher Dewdney Tonight the wind blows through all the worlds I have known and through all the lives I have led. The wind blows in the trees, deeper into each. The wind blows forever, strains like something endlessly departing. Restless, impatient, it races without burden. The night wind implores me through walls, claims me inside buildings. The night wind is an empire in exodus, a deliverance beside the dark shape of trees. Oaks that wrestle the gusty twilight under starry skies. The wind takes me in its giddy rush and gathers me into a storm of longing, rising on wings of darkness. There is a music in the wind. The…

There's usually 4 passages in paper1. and for the last passage, there is a written component. Sometimes it is a summary or a letter or an email or an article. I was wondering if anyone knows the correct format for email/letter? Including the spacing. Thanks in advance.

Hello, I'm doing Korean B HL but since it's not offered at our school, I supposedly have a teacher outside school who doesnt know anything about the IB. I'm going to do the Orals soon, but my questions are as follows. 1. How many orals am I supposed to send to the IB? 2. What am I supposed to talk about in the orals? ( example topics please) 3. And how long should they be? Does anyone have examples of orals (perhaps in written form) that you could give me just to know what i should be doing? English B would be the best, since its the only other language i know :) Thank you very much in advance!

Hey, Our English A2 teacher informed us that the syllabi for A1 and A2 languages will have a complete makeover in 2 years (in other words, first examinations May 2011). The A2 language program will be completely removed for all languages, apparently it is too expensive. The A1 program, on the other hand, is changed a lot too. Instead of having an A1 which is only literature like it is now, there will be two types of A1 languages to choose: "A literature" and "A language & literature". The A literature program will be a lot like the old A1, though there will also be minor changes. A lang&lit will be a lot like A2, meaning that in addition to having literature, ther…

What is this??? I know that it should be some creative task where you can make a movie, act or do anything you like, as long as it is an interpretation of a book from Part 4 books... The description is too broad and during the years in the IB i got used to rules and syllabuses, not "be creative"... i mean how is my teacher going to asses it? mabye anyone has a syllabus of A1 language where i can find assessment criteria, etc.??? P.S. I'm doing this presentation based on Victor Pelevin's book "Buddha's Little Finger" (or "Chapaev i Pustota" originally)

Help! I have a commentary due on the poem "Rosemary in Provence" and i'm really low on ideas and interpretations. Has anybody looked at this poem who is willing to share their ideas with me? Here it is: We stopped the Citroen at the turn of the lane, because you wanted a sprig of blue rosemary to take home, and your coat opened awkwardly as you bent over. Any stranger would have seen your frail shoulders, the illness in your skin - our holiday on the Luberon ending with salmonella - but what hurt me, as you chose slowly, was the delicacy of your gesture: the curious child, loving blossom and mosses, still eager in your disguise as an old man.

I haven't started yet I just read one book (didn't have time) other teacher are giving deadlines for the internal assessments. the Wold LItterature should be handed for the 28th of february but this for the other A1 (Italian is quite different from the other A1 languages in my school) Last year an italian girl handed in her WL one week before the exams. (i'm a bit confused) I don't think that the deadline is a big deal though, but I would like to know more from someone else who did italian A1. thank you
