hey everyone, I am currently working on my IOP on Chronicle of a death foretold. Other than the traditional commentary on themes, literary devices, etc, I wanted to incorporate something creative that would allow me to stand out. Any suggestions/hints will be greatly appreciated.

Our teacher has often told us that there are basically two structures you can use for written commentaries: You can either organise it so that you clump stylistic features together and talk about them in paragraphs (e.g. you have one paragraph for syntax, where you comment on the sentence structure throughout the entire poem) or you write systematically, analysing the extract line by line. I believe that most people write using the former structure for commentaries, but our teacher has asked us to write a commentary with line-by-line analysis, saying that we'll most likely use that structure in the actual IB exam for the unseen commentary. Right. Well. I've no idea how to…

I just wanted to say that I hate this book. I don't know if any of you are reading it, but it's a huge pain in the ass because all the dialogue is written in ebonics :/ Anyone know a good way to find an e-book of it and auto-correct it?

can someone please define satire for me? i understand that it is when authors use irony or sarcasm to criticise but my primary question is: does it have to involve ridicule or mockery to be considered satire? eg. the works i'm focusing on are scarlet letter and heart of darkness if you know the books can you also comment on whether satire exists in either/both of the books and why? i'm trying to distinguish if satire, paradox or just pure irony is present in these novels so any form of feedback would be great! thanks heaps!

hey there! I'm kind of confused over how to structure my essay: #1- Intro Work 1 Work 2 Concl. or #2- Intro POC (point of comparison) 1 POC 2 POC 3 i had originally structured my world lit using #2, however when my teacher read my draft she told me that i should change the structure and stick to one work to "drill deep" before moving onto the second...(by the way: my topic is how the playwrights have used symbolism to represent slavery and freedom) so my question is this, do i follow my english teachers advice? or should i take the risk and attempt to structure my essay so that it doesn't sound like a ping-pong game (constant back and forth momentum) oh and lastly, sho…

Well, to make a long story short, I received my essay back a while ago and i got 14/30. The reason why I lost so many marks was mainly because i didnt use enough literary features! the thing is, literary features is something thats completely new to me and my class and im just not getting the hang of it as my teacher explained reaaally briefly and expected us to figure the rest out for ourselves. i could mention a couple of them if we were doing a play but when it comes to writing an essay on a novel i just dont know what to say, as literary features are a pretty big part of my teacher's criteria at our current stage. could you english experts, (or well, A1 experts i thin…

For those of you who have Spanish as A1 or have read this book, I might be possibly analyzing this book for my final oral commentary and I have no idea of what to do. The problem is that I hated this book and I never finished reading a whole essay. Everytime I tried, I thought "What an ***" and I closed the book hehe. Now I don't know what to do. What are the most important things I should know about the book from an evaluative perspective?

Hello.. Well I've written a poem for my IOP (allegory in Wuthering Heights -- Adam and Eve) and well there's no problem with that. the problem is the way I bring in the literary features is very stupid. Here's an example: ** For you, the one and only Eve You’ve locked yourself in Earth And Catherine, Perhaps at a subconscious intent Existed in such a conflict Relinquishes To Edgar -- a superficial reality, Mere beauty Light-haired and bright A contrast Like yin and yang A contrast to dark, deep Heathcliff In physique, but more significantly personae too This contrast I have created To separate the wild from the tamed Where wild is the natur…

hi guys. I gotta get started with my World Lit Assignment 2. I'm thinking of doing Assignment 2c: detailed study, coz i can't be bothered doing two books and I'm not creative at all. I initially had a topic in mind with Native Son by Richard Wright but apparently the novel is not a world literature so I couldn't go with it. So I decided to go with Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe, I thought it was a good choice coz I got mock exams coming up, and I could definitely use it there as well. But I just can't come up with a decent topic to write about so I was wondering if you guys could help me out... Ideas anyone? If you're suggesting topics could you su…

Does anybody else find the criteria to be overwhelmingly vague? I mean, what EXACTLY separates "generally" from "well?" Doing it over and over again? Using big words? Having a lot of quotes? You tell me. My topic is on happiness within Mansfield stories and how she destroys it so show that true joy can never really be found and is easily destroyed. I've got the details of what I want to say, but I'm really paranoid that I'll end up with another 5. Basically, I've got -some analysis of literary features (simile, metaphor, contrast, juxtaposition, irony, etc) -some reference to writing style (ellipses, breaking of the fourth wall, series of questions in a row, etc) …

So some of the things I have read about, research beyond just reading, talks about trying to state if alliteration was intentionally used in a certain piece. so like something along the lines of, if alliteration appears within Scarlet letter more closely together, or in smaller proximity, then farther away. This analysis would indicate if the author wanted to purposely use the emphasis of alliteration or if the chances in language are just coincidentally there. Also, i was wondering if this was something important enough to mention in a oral. Lets say, you see alliteration within scarlet letter passage you get - and you want to mention that while alliteration is coinciden…

The work we've been studying recently is a collection of short stories by Katherine Mansfield. Haven't heard of her? Not surprised. I've chosen the topic of discussing how Mansfield often uses an extremely minor character foil that's left both nameless and undeveloped in order to crush the fantasies of the protagonists on three of her short stories, and how ironic it is that such a minor character can ruin the dreams and false perceptions of these major, well-characterized characters. This topic took a lot of effort to get to, and I've now started preparing for it. Unfortunately, the only thing I could think of at the present moment is [i]what I'm actually supposed to…

I decided to use Paradise of the Blind by Duong Thu Huong and Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel for my World Lit 1, and my thesis runs something like "The repressive experiences Tita and Hang had led to their ultimate success in overcoming their opressive family traditions and pasts." it still needs tweaking, if anyone has any suggestions or ideas. I'm pretty much still scratching my head over what I can do that's not over-used, so any suggestions or feedback would be awesome. (: thanks!

Okay, I hope I'm not echoing anyone in asking this question: Can anyone confirm for sure if you can use a world literature text in any of your world literature papers even though you used it in your first IB oral presentation? My teacher said "no" to be safe, but that leaves me with only one world lit. text to use, because I used one in my first oral presentation (along with a language A1 text) and, obviously, two in my first world literature paper. And I'm left, of course, with the one I dislike the most. [To be more precise, I used A Doll's House by Henrik Ibsen and The Kite Runner by... well I forgot his first name but his last name is Husseini -- I think -- and then u…

Hi everyone! I'm planning on doing my IOP as a creative writing/roleplay of Huck Finn at the gates of heaven to show how Twain was questioning conventional morals. But I'm really unsure on how to do this (my teacher kind of took my original idea and transformed it into this...). Especially on how to organize this thing- the roleplay part should demonstrate Huck's character, and he would talk about the theme? How long should this be? And then explain why I decided to make it a roleplay, then why and how I showed the theme of challenging conventions (analyze passages?), and then why I presented Huck the way I did? And it would help to talk about Twain's tone right…

Usually I try to pick apart whatever I have just read and immediately point out flaws but I can't get around to doing the same for this book. It's just so well thought out and incredibly effective. Has anybody read it? Favorite passages or quotes? I read it for Spanish A1 HL but I'm going to read it in english over the summer for fun.
