i have some ideas for my topic, but i don't know if there is enough info to write a good essay. here's what i have so far... - comparison between the manipulative characters in both novels (Mama Elena and Crampas) - extents of violence and the reasons behind it (Effi Briest- the duel & Like Water for Chocolate- Mama Elena beating Tita) which one should i choose or are there any others that i could possibly write about?

I'm starting my IOP for my Language Arts class and we could choose from Joy Luck Club, The Great Gatsby, Antigone, and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. I chose Huck Finn being a favorite novel and having read it before. I want to do something about how The townspeople they come across and other characters in the book abide by the socially moral code and how Huck abides by his own reasoned code which at times seems to be the more moral even though he'll "go to the bad place". I'm thinking of involving the class by asking them how they feel about different situations Huck ends up in and what they would think is Moral but i don't know if that's be contemporary enough and …

For my world lit, I have done in text referencing for my quote from the two novels I am comparing and included those in the bibliography. However, I just realized that I haven't done the incorrect reference and forgot to include in text reference for some of the quote but have included the two books in my bibliography. i have submitted it, will I be considered plagiarising if I forgot and done the wrong reference but included all my sources in my bibliography? Oh yeah, how do i in text reference a quote i took from the blurb

Hey, I have already chosen my Word Literature and have already read the two I'm going to write about. I've decided to write my world literature on "Metamorphosis" by Franz Kafka and "A day in the life of Ivan Denisovich" by Alexander Solyetsyne. I have thought of my WL question. I was thinking along the lines of : "Jusqu'à quel point peut-on dire que la vie prise au piège se ressemble dans l'état physique de Gregor Samsa et le camp de labeur russe dont Ivan se trouve, privant Ivan et Gregor de vivre une vie libre ?" "To what extent can we say that the imprisoned lives are similar in the physical state of Gregor Samsa and the Russian labour camp in which Ivan finds himsel…

I was planning on doing my world lit paper on the character development of nora and catherine linton because of boundaries. I was going to start with the physical settings of the two, the imprisonment factor, and somehow include the girls personally like Nora is doll like but I'm a little unsure about young Cathy. I need one more idea for one more paragraph. Then my last paragraph was going to be their breakthroughs. Tarantella dance and falling for Hareton. Anyone have any other ideas ? Any and all help would be appreciated Thank you

I have written my WL2 on Amelie Nothombs "Fear and Trembling" and just found out that it is not on the copy of the IB WL Prescribed Reading List here: http://www.biss.com.cn/upgrade/admin/files/A1%20PWL.pdf Although it may simply be that that copy is outdated or incorrect, which I sincerely hope is the case, I am somewhat worried as to whether my WL2 will be marked. The text was set by my teacher, and she has taught it for at least 2 years, however last years graduating class at my school many received quite low english marks (lower than they had been predicted) and I am concerned it may be because several of them wrote one of their WL essays on it, and that my year may …

I was just wondering about the amount of potential works that each school could draw while doing the commentary. Apparently, when we draw our selections "from the hat," there will only be 10 to choose from, with 25 students. Our teacher has informed us about the amount that we should prepare for, and they include: Two Shakespeare works (Macbeth, Othello)Five short stories (James Joyce, Dubliners)Eight poems (Margaret Atwood)The number appears to be somewhat high - is this normal for most other schools? I'm paranoid, especially since the Atwood poems are quite difficult to deal with, and while our teacher pointed out various literary features within them, he hardly mentio…

OK, I am one of those people who are never able to plan. If I try to, I fail to stick to it in my real writing. Result= all my teachers are worried about how I go off topic and exceed the word limit. So how does every get around to planning? Is there a 'best' method for doing it?

So I'm writing my World Lit 1 on How women deal with conflict in The House of The Spirits and Like Water for Chocolate. Obviously I'm going to talk about the relationship, or lack thereof, between Tita and Mama Elena for Like Water for Chocolate - but I also need to talk about how she deals with it. I was thinking she uses cooking as her outlet and to manipulate as once she discovers her powers, she uses them for her own good and often harming and damaging people and their relationships. Do you have any ideas that can contribute to this, as I am kind of stuck! For The House of The Spirits I am writing about Clara and her relationship with Esteban. After he hits her, she w…

What are the failing requirements for World Literature? If it fails, does that mean your A1 fails and hence your diploma as well? What are the IB like with malpractise in WL stuff? Do they scan the works for plagiarism etc? My exams are in November and my procrastination of study comes from the realisation that I accidentally submitted one of the WL assignments without a bibliography, and I've been to scared to ask my teacher about it because I just don't want to hear that I'll get failed over it and then fail IB, and one of the reasons I have been so crap with study is because I keep fearing that I've already failed IB due to the WL. This particular WL assignment stated…

Hello hello! Sorry if this is the wrong forum......I'm doing HL English and our Oral Presentation is coming up in a couple of months. I'm thinking of doing one of two things for it: One is an analysis of the use of Greek Tragedy in Murder in the Cathedral by TS Eliot, the other is a kind of standard analysis of another book we're doing An Imaginary Life by David Malouf - I'm just going to be analysing a motif in the book. In depth of course. My question is, I'm kind of assuming that if I do the first option I will possibly get a higher mark because I'm planning on doing a lot of comparisons to Greek texts we haven't studied (the IB likes this kind of thing apparently), …

I am in English A1 HL, and we just did our first oral presentation as practice for our IA. My teacher took off nearly a third of my points, saying that my ideas weren't fresh and original, because I had used them in my Commentary for the same novel. Is that really a problem? The two things were on overlapping topics, so it only seems reasonable to reuse it since it was a great topic.

Ok, well I just want to make sure if everyone around the world has the same work load for this subject. My entire grade is doing HL English currently and right now my class is require to have a separate notebook for each of the texts we do.....and i mean decent sized books....and I would just like to be reassured that and if everyone has this same amount of work. It's been a month into the course and it looks as though we really will fill this book. O.o

Well, when the IBO grades English SL students, shouldn't they be graded easier than HL students considering they are taking a lower level course? Or are they all graded the same? I find this weird because in our school we have classes with both HL and SL students together.

Hi everyone! I am trying to write about forbidden love in both "House of Spirits" by Isabel Allende and "Like Water for Chocolate" by Laura Esquivel. In LWFC i will obviously write about Tita and Perdo (their hidden relationship, communication, etc.) I also want to write about gestrudis and her own kind of love for independence and freedom. I could also mention Mama Elena and her tragic background. In HOS I will focus mainly on Pedro and Blanca, i will aslo mention Alba and Miguel. My question here, should i focus on all the relationships and discuss how frobidden love was portrayed in both books? Or should I focus on one example from each book only and just mention the r…

I chose characterization of king claudius (from HAMLET) for my iop topic and my teacher told me to come up with a more unique point ? or something like that, but i can only think of general things like how he was an immoral man with evil deeds... im even starting to forget my teachers feedback :/ is there anyway i can focus on a more particular topic ? im sorry for a vague question, im really confused.

Our teacher (I'm not sure if this is all IB or not) would prefer to have creative orals for our internal orals, and I'm so stuck! We're doing Arundathi Roy's "A God of Small Things" and I have no idea how to get a creative oral out of a book like that. Actually I can't think of creative orals period lol. Hey my world lit topic is "How authors use food to present the problems amongst characters in A Doll's House and Happy Birthday in Family Ties." I'm having difficulties in comparing the two texts... like I want to say the use of food on both texts brings to the attention of the reader the problems amongst the characters. and for that i can say blah blah blah. and then I go into detail and say in A Doll's House, the story about the macaroons shows all the problems in the characters' relationship on a small scale, whereas in Happy Birthday, how characters make and eat the food represents how they treat their family members. Does that make sense? And do you have any suggest…

I don't think there has been a topic on world lit essays and these two books here; otherwise I wouldn't have started this topic. So as the title kindly gives away I am doing my English A1 SL World lit assignment most likely on The Kiss of the Spider Woman (Puig) and Siddhartha (Hesse). The third book which I have yet to even open is Feet in Chains; I really don't know anything about it, but I think that I'm going to do my world lit on the forementioned since the deadline for the first draft is in 2 months. So in terms of a topic I have been thinking of something on the lines of comparing the quest theme in the two books i.e. the quest for identity and the quest for enligh…

Hi. My teacher kept on telling us that a commentary must be more in-depth and must be more analytical. SOme questions: (1) What is analysis in the context of literature? Can you provide examples as to what is analysis and as to what is not> (2) How do we structure an essay? Based on SCASI? Or base on three points of interest?

Greetings to all. As the topic title suggests, it is about my World Literature 1 essay research question. Finding it kinda a pain to find a specified topic that can be compared from the three books I had to read (Christ Stopped at Eboli by Carlo Levi, Blood Wedding by Lorca and The Outsider/Stranger by Albert Camus) I did finally come up with a topic but I fear if it can be a "comparative" question to write on. I am kindly asking for your views and comments on my topic. The topic is: "The Role of the Sun and Moon in The Outsider by Albert Camus and Blood Wedding by Garcia Lorca" The problem here is that I will be talking about the Sun for The Outsider and the Moon for Bl…

Ok, I'm sure there has been a million topics like this here before, but here goes: So as the thread title already gives away I have my IOP next fall as I am starting IB1. Here in Finland we're lucky enough to have a preparatory year (Pre-IB) before the first year of IB and we have already practiced analysis and oral presentations. Anyways I am still quite dumbfounded at what on earth does the IBO want from us in the IOP? And I still do suffer from slight stage fright after all these years giving presentations, so can it just be a …

Our class was required to read the three theban plays (Antigone, Oedipus) as well as parts of the Bible. We basically had to create a "dictionary of archetypal material from Sophocles' Three Theban Plays" and include the hero journey, the monomyth, the roles of women, the trilogy of time, and connections you see to stories in the Bible. My question: What do they mean by "the trilogy of time"? I'm not sure what this archetype means so if anyone could give me a definition or perhaps an example of it from a different story that would be great. Thanks.

I was thinking about my Wold Lit 1 topic and this is what i came up with. What do you guys think? (I know I still need to find what effect these images have on the book) 1. The repulsive imagery of the pimple from Rashomon by Ryunosuke Akutagawa and the "hanging intestines" from Chronicle of a Death Foretold by Gabriel Garcia Marquez (not necessarily the hanging intestines but the whole image of Santiago Nasar being stabbed - How would I phrase that?)

This summer we got an assignment for next year's IB English to write two thesis paragraphs comparing elements between The House of the Spirits and Paradise of the Blind. Here is one of my thesis paragraphs so far. Clara and Que, the motherly figures in their own books, The House of the Spirits and Paradise of the Blind, respectively, both show strong differences and similarities in their relationships with their children. Hang and Que attempt to reconcile with each other near the end of their respective novel, Paradise of the Blind and try to build a better relationship with each other. However, in The House of the Spirits, Blanca constantly maintains a close relation…

Hey guys. Thanks for taking the time to try to help I want to compare Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress [Dai Sijie] with The Poisonwood Bible [barbara Kingsolver].
