I've just come across the following: "Failure to meet expectations in a Language A1 subject has been known to have a dangerous after-effect which can lead to a lack of employment and a general inability to contribute to society." Since I'm consistently not liking working for my Language A1, I'm wondering: WHYYY does LAN A1 consist of literature, i.e. reading books+analysing them??? what does that have to do with real life??? Shouldn't we rather have to write more useful stuff in our exams (e.g. summaries or even stories with which we could win competitions and earn money!!) and be able to communicate adequately (i.e. speak about different topics with "high" vocabulary)!??…

i already know what I'm doing my IOP on. It's on the theme of guilt through Poisonwood Bible. I just don't know how to present this. Like if anybody knows what I am talking about and could share some insight on how to even start, it would be great. I have already analyzed it but like i said I don't know how to present it. Any help would be really appreciated.

I chose the Bell Jar but I don't know exactly what I'm doing I wanted to analyze either the Bell Jar symbol or the Fig Tree symbol but both of them were taken by other people in my class, so I thought U'd analyze her suicide attempt or something but I dont know I would very much appreciate any help provided!

Hi guys, I wondered whether anyone here is doing German A1. I'm doing German A1 self taught and it would be great to chat about stuff with someone. I had never really done any literature before the IB and now I've to "learn it all by myself". The English teacher at school told me some bits about general lit analyses but... well, I still don't really know how to analyse stuff + co... Anyway, would be happy to get in touch with you

OK, so lucky me has her coursework deadlines coming up early Feb, so I need to get these things done and dusted and out of my hair! Just needed to check a couple of things ... Firstly, my first piece of WL coursework was on Metamorphosis and The Outsider/ The Stranger, and I was aware that the word limit was 1500. However, someone told me that we were allowed 10% over, so would that mean that if I subitted my current essay with 1640 words, that should be ok? Secondly, I have no idea as to the word limit for my second Higher Level piece on Antigone ... is the word limit the same as my Standard one, or a little more? I was under the impression I was allowed 2000, and poss…

I just finished Kafka's "The Metamorphosis" and now I have to do my IA Oral Presentation over it. I have no idea what topic I should choose for it. I didn't really find anything to analyze in the story. I don't have any idea where to start or how to go about this presentation. Any ideas on what I should do for it? Any past experience?

my world lit 1 FINAL draft is due tomorrow, the problem is my teacher is stuck on this idea about what a world lit 1 should be about and i've been reading a lot here and i think he's wrong. My topic is comparing the mother-daughter relationships of the protagonists of Like Water for Chocolate and Eva Luna. What i did was compare how the relationship evolved, the feelings, deaths, how one character sees the other etc. and backed that up with quotes from the books. Now, my teacher said that it was perfect, but, it's not a world lit 1 topic since, world lit 1 is supposed to focus on literary aspects. Do I HAVE TO focus on a LITERARY aspect? do I even have to mention literary…

I'll be entering Pre-DP soon and I have to choose my A1 (mother tongue) language. I speak English at home and have done so my entire life but I'm not sure whether choosing English as my A language is a good idea seeing as I've never had any advanced English classes at school (grammar etc.) - just simple stuff So, getting to my question; is it a good or bad idea for me to choose English as my A1 language? Will I struggle cause I've never had any actual English classes before? What kind of stuff do you do in A1-language class at IB?

So I've got to do my first world lit paper, but I have no topic ideas at all. The 3 plays we're doing it on are Waiting for Godot by Samuel Beckett, les belles soeurs by Michael Tremblay and Blood Wedding by Federico García Lorca. I'm having trouble making connections between any of these texts. Any suggestions would be helpful. :/

New to this website......But I have THE World Literature 1 due within the next couple of weeks, and I am going to start working on it soon(procastination ftw), but I need some advise/help...... The topic of my World Lit 1 will be focused on Aristophanes' Lysistrata, and Ariel Dorfman's Death and the Maiden. Basically I am going to look at the roles of men and women in the two plays, and how they differentiate throughout the acts. What do you guys think? Good topic? Bad topic? Has it even been done in the past (unoriginal)? If so, are there links or documents that contain similar World Literature 1s, I want to look at a level 6/level 7 work in the field of my topic. Than…

Ok so I want to compare the power of women in Lysistrata and Death and the Maiden, and how it goes against the traditional view that women are supposed to be weaker and less intelligent than men. I will be comparing 3 points in both books, and taking excerpts from both books to prove that both book demonstrated the points I stated, 1. Women are supposed to have no power, and they are looked down upon 2. Women show that they are equally capable of thinking for themselves 3. Women rise up to take the power, and gain dominance over men Is this a good topic/thesis/idea, and is my approach a good method? Also, how many quotations would be a good amount? THANK YOU!

I'm planning to do a creative world lit 2 based on The Unbearable Lightness of Being by Milan Kundera. I don't know what to do it about, though. It might be an analysis of a passage or an extra chapter or a monologue... or even analysing stuff such as the meaning of Ess Muss Ein, Kitsch, The One-Millionth Part... etc. All ideas/comments/suggestions are GREATLY appreciated. I should have my first draft for February 8th!! Thanks in advance

How does one achieve a good conclusion for writing World Literature paper 1? I have recieved mine back and one of the comments was that my conclusion was weak. What things should be said in the conclusion to strengthen it? Also as a side note, I heard from someone in my class that getting a 1,400-1,500 words on WL is one the best ways to get a good grade. I've heard this for EEs too(getting 3,900-4,000 words is the only way you can achieve an A). Is this true at all?

My world Lit is due soon & I was wondering if I could get some feedback on my topic. it is "How do the protagonists in both Accidental Death of an Anarchist and Death and the Maiden use facade to accomplish their ultimate goal?" Im going to compare how they both use deception- by changing their personalities, weapons- they use them to instil fear, and trust- they build trust so it works to their advantage. & i was wondering if explaining my point would be enough - or does IB prefer that you use literary features (like diction, imagery, etc) ?

I was wondering wether u could also help me out a little. Just like IBSpencer, im starting my IOP too this year, well actuallyits next week and i am doing the comparison of two poems and how they deal with death and loss of loved ones through the use of routine and the 5 senses. I was just wonderign wether you knew any tips to give such as what examiners are generally looking for and ways in which i could structure something like this. I would also just like to ask, and more relative to the topic u are discussing wether audience interaction might seem as though we are lacking confidence and clear planning... just a theory!

Many people develop their own skills as they go through English A1, but I guess it would be somewhat useful to look at some additional resources(books and such) to help. So...I have my IOP in about a week and I can't seem to decide on a topic! I have so many ideas(some of which are insane), but I just can't choose one. Is there any possible way one of you could take a look at my list and let me know what you believe to be the best idea out of the group? Please and thank you:) King Lear: • Compare king Lear to the guide of a typical Shakespearean tragedy or to a modern tragedy • Realism of injuries/ death (What would have occurred in play had the injuries/ deaths occurred realistically) • Injuries and death (Who killed who/ who injured who/ Effect of deaths on plot) • Shakespeare's depiction of a women to his typical/ the typical stereotyp…

So, we all handed in our World Lit papers, and the teacher said almost all of us entirely missed the mark. So, she's given us the opportunity to rewrite them. So, my feedback mainly focussed on the issues of being too wordy, and not being concise enough. My topic was too wide, which I realized as I was writing it, because I was continuously editing it down to meet the word count, and I had trouble writing about my topic. So, I'm not sure whether I would like to revise my essay, or just start over. My two books are Fathers and Sons by Ivan Turgenev, and House of Spirits by Isabel Allende. My first topic was "How the author uses suffering to affect and change the charac…

Im doing my IOP soon and I wasn't sure if my topic is strong enough, Im doing “How does the author exploit the qualities of corruption in his characters? What is his intention in doing so?”. Basically I'm gonna show how all his corrupt characters are from either low or middle class status, then I’m gonna analysis the characters (their motifs, etc). We need to show what the greater significance of our topic is- so I was thinking of talking about why the author depicted the poor as corrupt and say how they symbolise the politicians who are 'poor' at heart, etc. because the author has an active political life. what do you think?

For the thesis of my world lit, does it HAVE to contrast one book to the other? My teacher recommended that we use the word "whereas" (or something along those lines) in our thesis statement, this shows a contrast. In my body paragraphs I discuss some contrasting issues amongst both books, but I mainly talk about how these contrasting issues relate to the similar conclusion of both books So can my thesis just show how both books conclude in the same manner?! THANKS!

I'm in English A1 SL, my current topic is Where I plan on comparing "The Patriot" by Nissim Ezekiel to "Serenades" by Seamus Heaney and/or "Ganga" by Ezekiel to "Digging" by Heaney. You think it will work? I want to point out the difference the respective poets cultural background makes on their use of figures of speech and language. Any way to rephrase the statement that you think would help me by making it more/less specific? Any changes in general? Thanks.

It's been 3 months since I first entered the IB program. All but Arabic A1 (SL) is going on very well. To be perfectly honest I find this class somehow hard, not because I can not write, but because of the teacher. I never understand one single word of what she says. She is always telling us that she gives us marks that we are close to achieving, the problem is I keep getting a six. Six is fine, but I BADLY want to get a 7, but I do not know how. I do not know what I am supposed to do. Whenever I ask her she replies using the shortest answer a person could ever get! And of course I do not understand ANYTHING!! Bottom line is HOW CAN I GET A 7???

Greetings to all! I am trying to write a strong thesis statement for my World Lit 1 (I'm in HL English). Some background knowledge about my project: I am comparing The House of the Spirits by Isabel Allende and Like Water For Chocolate by Laura Esquivel. The topic of my essay is about honor and pride. I already have a few examples from each novel but, as I said before, I am having a lot of difficulty writing a solid thesis that incorporates my topic efficiently (i.e. low word count, yet to-the-point). I am hoping that someone could either a) post a link of past World Lits just to see the style of the thesis or b) post their World Thesis (i.e. one that has already been sub…

My teacher basically had all of us pick a motif and two books to compare and contrast with that motif. How can I mold this into a proper topic? I didn't think about this until now. All I have is basically Motif-Book-Book. So Strength of Women-Like Water for Chocolate-House of Spirits. Can it be something like, "The Portrayal of the Strength of Women in LWFC and HOS" or does it have to be more in-depth, etc. than that?

I'm starting IB next year - had a brief look at the book list, found that in English next year, we are going to study Nineteen Eighty-four, Brave New World and We, which, after a bit of Wikipedia, are found to be the most famous dystopian novels of 20th century. Any comments? I found this quite weird and was just wondering if anyone else is doing or has done novels in this fashion? i.e. all in one genre? You can drop down some titles that you are doing at your school for English as Language A - for interest only

My English teacher was chastised last year for not teaching up to IB standard and she and the rest of the department are stepping it up. Unfortunately, she seems to have embraced commentaries with a vengeance unforeseen by anyone and criticized by the other teachers. We're all pretty sure she's taking her assignment of these things way too far, but I just wanted to check and see if this is normal for commentary workloads: 500 to 900 words assigned every night, always due next class with no feedback on previous ones before the next one is due. This continues for three weeks straight with two days of rest before a 1500 word major extended commentary is assigned - to be …
