Hi I am currently taking the first year of HL English. We just fnished with IOP's. I know we have World Lit Papers too, but I am confused as to what the exam at the end of the senior year will be composed of. Will we need to define literature terms or will it just be composed of essays (and how many?). Which books will the exam cover? Only books we read senior year or books from both junior AND senior year? Thanks so much! P.S.- this is the first year my school does IB which is why im confused about everything :X

Hello! For my world lit paper 1, I am comparing the stranger by camus and the metamorphosis by kafka. I want to look at the development of the christ archetype throughout both novellas. However, what encompasses this archetype? all I have is: the sacrifice of one for the many. Any and all help would be appreciated!

So, I'm a little confused as to exactly what we're supposed to be doing in our Individual Oral Commentaries. We're the first group of IBs going through our school, so our english teacher really knows about as much as we do. In what way is it similar to the Individual Oral Presentations? Is it basically an oral version of a commentary? And does anyone have any examples of IOCs that they'd like to share? Thanks

Well i'm from Poland. And i have polish s my A1 language. The thing is that polish is the most difficult sybject in my IB. I was reallu surprised by that. You see....i'm taking all sybjects in english, the idea is to study in different country, but i spend most of my time on Polish. Most of the people in my class were failing polish in the first year. I was just wondering...is it the same with other languages? Is for example English very very hard? How about Spanish as A1?

Hi, I just started the IB and for my oral presentation I wanted to write a short story and link it to The Reader and the Holocaust and how a young child sees it. The presentation can last about half a lesson (25 minutes).(only four others in the class so speaking isn't a problem) I had a question... 1. How long do you think the short story should be around so it doesn't take ages to read and then waste the 25 minutes This is the schools first year of IB and they didn't specify anything (on half term now).

Hi I am officially starting the IB on Monday - however I went on a 'teambuilding trip' with my future class recently, and we were all given a copy of this Charlotte Bronte novel to read. I'm betting that this will lead to some tiresome, pull-your-hair-out essay on the imagery, or some such. Does anyone know more about this subject? Has anyone done the 'Jane Eyre thang' before? PS - I LOVE this site. I found it a few weeks ago and this is my first post - I'm going to print out all the syllibi for every subject I'm taking. You''ll probably see a lot of my posts in the future.

I'm a suffering IB english student in my second semester of Junior year. We've read many novels, and I read them all, and took notes on all of them. However, when it comes time to writing an essay or giving an oral presentation, all my thesis topics are too simple, and everytime I get a bad grade because of this reason. How do you make your thesis more complicated? Here's an example of 2 essays I wrote earlier in the year. The first one got an A since it was simple and it was the beginning of the year. The second one got a C because the thesis was too simple, which wrecked the whole paper, and I've been getting C's on my papers and orals since. So how do you use high…

Ok so the poem is called Identity by Julio Noboa
Let them be as flowers, always watered, fed, guarded, admired, but harnessed to a pot of dirt. I'd rather be a tall, ugly weed, clinging on cliffs, like an eagle wind-wavering above high, jagged rocks. To have broken through the surface of stone, to live, to feel exposed to the madness of the vast, eternal sky. To be swayed by the breezes of an ancient sea, carrying my soul, my seed, beyond the mountains of time or into the abyss of the bizarre I'd rather be unseen, and if then shunned by everyone, than to be a pleasant-smelling flower, growing in clusters in the fertile valleys, where the…

Hey Guys, So I'm half way through my first year of the IB and we've just recieved the marks for out English oral presentations, and i got a high band 5. The marks havent been moderated yet but the teachers are usually pretty spot on. I just wanted to know how this scales up to the rest of you guys. I was really hopeing for at least a band six, and thought that i had done really well, but we havent been given very detailed feed back and im a bit confussed. Im sort of hoping that by the end of the IB my mark will average out to a band 6 once i've done the exams as well ans the oral commentary. Does this sound too hopeful? Also, when abouts in the course did everyone else h…

Hi. I believe this is not a language question, but a general one, since it concerns the possibility of writing exams in the end IB1 (together with IB2) for courses you find really easy. At the moment, I'm thinking about dropping English A2 for English B. This is not because I find English A2 difficult (it's time consuming, though, and time is expensive in IB), but because I would like to reduce my workload as much as possible so that I can put more effort into my harder subjects (and gain some more free time as well). I've seen past papers for English B and they seem really easy. I bet I could ace them right here, right now. As such, my question is: Can I finish …

Hi, Here's my dilemma. We're in September.. and we're JUST finishing one of the four sections required.. What's more, we're supposed to have read: Bruce Chatwin - In Patagonia Jane Austen - Pride and Prejudice Shakespeare - Romeo and Juliet Emily ****inson - Poems ----- Apart from the fact that the texts themselves suck, of the above, we've read half of In Patagonia (but we didnt have any problems with the storyline because it basically is a compendium of quirky anecdotes and stories), we've watched Romeo + Juliet and Pride and Prejudice and read a couple of chapters of both.. I repeat.. a COUPLE of CHAPTERS! and a selection of the poems.. …

Check this out... For the Internal Assesment in Language arts, our school implements the following three books: Aeneid by Virgil, Dante's Inferno by Aleghri, and Siddhartha by Herman hesse. Since the assignment deals with comparison, i thought of doing "How do Aleghri and Hesse portray the difficulties enountered by their protagonists through the use of diciton, details, and figurative language" Just want to know what u think abt the topic. Is it deep enough? I know i can get a ton of support..but plz advice as to how i may structure the essay and so forth. Help is appreciated

Hi. Does anyone have notes for Sp Ab Initio? I'd really appreciate if someone could send them to me. If not, perhaps you guys know whether there are any good study guides out there. The syllabus is in my opinion very vague, since it concerns all different ab initio languages. I'd like to have a guide specifically for Spanish, with information about the grammar which we are supposed to know for the exams.

Does anyone else do Latin B SL, and then Cicero Pro Caelio: there are some bits of this translation that I can do nothing more than fudge. UNfortunately, thre are no notes on many parts in Austin and Ciraolo, and Grant gets far from the Latin - does anyone have a word by word literal translation, even if they put it together themselves? I've only done 24 sections so far, and I think I am only doing 30 altogether, but I'd be happy to compare translations - not sure if mine gets too far from latin at points. Anyhow, any references on good word for word trans would be much appreciated.

Hello all. I am going to do IB right after my Summer holidays - this Monday. I am worried. My school is apparently going to start doing commentaries this November. I am doing English as language A1, at standard level. What I want to know is as follows: - How many do I have to do in total for the IB? 1, 2 commentaries? - How long should each commentary be? - Can I do any book I want? - What are "periods" of the literature course? Any and all help appreciated. God bless Sincerely Ben Lee
