We got an assignment to buy an English newpaper when we were on a school trip to London, and use an article or something in the newspaper as our base for the written task 1. I found this article called "Is this the day the UK dies?", and it mentions Brown's speech and so on. What I was thinking was that I'd write an op-ed (opposite the editorial) as Brown where I discuss the negative consequences of Scotland becoming independent. If there were any doubts, the subject I am taking is English A Language and Litterature. Now, my question is if I actually have to directly mention something from the curriculum in the task, or if it's enough to use for example rhetorical dev…

Will universities accept me for International Relations or History if I study Literature at SL? Currently in Lang/Lit HL. I like analysing poetry and would rather avoid creative writing. I got an A* in both English Language and Literature at IGCSE. Thank you

I am having trouble deciding whether i should take English A Literature or English A Lit-Lang. I have to take either English class in HL. After reading other blogs and various websites, i initially chose to take Literature because i gathered that it was the more difficult of the two courses, and i love English so i would like to undertake the challenge. However today, our English teachers gave us a long and scary lecture on the difference between the two. The Lit-Lang teacher in particular described her course as extremely difficult. She also said that in Lit-Lang you analyze more adverts/newspapers/speeches, the motives behind why things are said or advertised, the h…

Erm, hello... I have no clue what A1/A and A2 and B are, but hopefuly I'm in the right place lol if not then apologies ;-; So... it's the start of a new school semester, and I'm new to the I.B program and in grade 11. I guess for the first day of school, my teachers were just chill and just talked about the program, and told us a brief intro as to what we were going to face in the future. But one thing that caught my attention was something called an Individual Oral Commentary. My teacher made it sound really scary, and I'm very intimidated by it. Basically, he told us that on the day of this assigment, we are given an envelope with a passage (one that we studied, …

Well, here it goes. I'm starting IB this September at UWC and I have to choose my preliminary subjects for when I get there during the following two weeks. The thing is my hexagon is hard to make since I used to follow an Humanities itinerary back in the Spain education system and I wouldn't be able to handle Sciences or Maths groups at HL. Therefore I'm planning to take Theatre HL, Anthropology HL and English Lang&Lit HL (I think only Lit would be extremely hard, reading so many literary texts and books require certain control over the language and its lexicon). The matter here is that even picking up this last subject with Language and not only Lit, may be quite dif…

Hey Guys, Our teacher gave us the poem 'The Visitor' by Gibbons Ruark and after a discussion on it for a couple of classes she told us to write a commentary on it and turn it in on Monday, so I have the weekend to write it. The problem is, I have never done lit before, the closest thing to the commentary that I've done is the style analysis in IGCSE (EFL) so I have no idea as to what is the requirement. I've been searching all over the internet, but there are different answers. Some say that you make a thesis and then support it by exploring the effects the literary devices create while others say that you just explore the literary devices (so, no thesis) and it can jus…

I really need to get a high 7 for this assignment to make up for my horrible IOP score. So... Firstly, I really, really want to ace the reflective statement, so I'm wondering what's the difference between showing superficial development, some development and development of culture and context (see criterion below). A: Fulfilling the requirements of the reflective statement To what extent does the student show how their understanding of cultural and contextual elements was developed through the interactive oral? 0:The work does not reach a standard described by the descriptors. 1: Reflection on the interactive oral shows superficial development of the stude…

Hey all, So today I just got my IOP mark back, and I got 22/30 (for HL English). I believe that this is a grade 6 as a grade 6 boundary is 22-25. I was just wondering what the likelihood of my mark being moved down is if the IB markers moderate it down - does it happen often? I am also graduating the IB in 2015 so have the IB grade boundaries changed?

Hello! I'll be going into IB soon, and though I know that I'll probably figure it out soon, I have two questions about Lit 1- What is the IOP like? I know it stands for "Individual Oral Presentation," but what exactly is it? 2- How to write a great literary essay? Every time I write a lit essay, my teacher never gives me over a 26/30. How do you write 30/30 essays? Yes, I know this is early, but I'm worried. Yes, I know my name is "essaywriter" but my forte is history essays. Thanks!

Ex-I/GCSE student here about to join the Diploma Programme. I took English Language and English Literature in Year 11. Perhaps I have asked a hackneyed question but why should I choose Literature over Lang/Lit? Hi I'm wondering how specific does an IOP topic have to be. I'm currently thinking about doing the text 'Like Water for Chocolate' and doing something with feminism. I'm thinking of just focusing feminism on the character Tita. Is this topic too unspecific? Do I have to narrow that down to a way she shows feminism (food, interaction with other characters)?

Hello, In september I will begin the IB Course and will be doing English Language and Literature SL. However, one of the issues which most concerns me is the fact that I have a stammer which does not allow me to speak full sentences (To participate in class I usually ask a colleague to speak for me) How will I do the English Assesed Orals which are moderated, the problem is just the speaking not the gathering or the "expressing" of the ideas. Does anyone have this issue? How will I perfrom the Assesed and non assesed orals? Best Regards

English Mock IOP (group of 5) tips needed

Hey Guys, School has just started, and our English teacher has already asked us to give a mock IOP on the assigned pages of the book Train to Pakistan by Khushwant Singh. The class has been divided into groups of 6, and we have the presentations starting day after tomorrow (my group is the sixth, and the last group). We are still in the early discussion phase and none of us has read the book before and we've hit a roadblock, and a guy in our group who acts like the leader has asked one of us to work on characterization, one on how violence is portrayed and used, and well you get the idea. I don't really like that approach, but my brain wasn't really working at that time…

Hello everyone! I've done one semester of English Literature and I'm pretty sure my average grade is a 5. We've only been doing commentaries and oral presentations, so I am not sure if it would get even worse next semester, when we are introduced to new topics. I am really worried! I really want a 7 in English! Do you think it is possible for me to improve the 5 to a 7? And btw we've done our IOP and I've most likely got a 6 not a 7 (or even worse?)😠I feel so hopeless! Could you please give me some advice on how I can improve my grades?? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

At my school, we've just completed the IOCs and were wondering, how do they get moderated with the IOP mark? I know the combined final weighting is 30%, but is the moderation of both orals based on how accurately your teacher marked your IOC or purely on your level in the IOC? For instance, say you screwed up your IOC and did well on your IOP, would your IOP stay the same as long as your teacher gave you a score that reflected your performance in the IOC, or would it go down purely based on the fact you stuffed up? I've tried finding this out from my teacher and the IB guide, but it all seems a bit vague, so cheers in advance for your help!

So I'm doing my critical response (WT2) on a fox news article about an amendment to the U.S. constitution which would grants Congress and the states the power to regulate the raising and spending of money and in-kind equivalents with respect to federal and state elections, respectively. My prescribed question is:'' How and why could this text be interpreted differently by two different readers?'' So I chose to write one paragraph on how it could be interpreted by republicans and one on how it could be interpreted by democrats. My problem now is that I'm unsure what to write the other paragraph about. I thought I might just write about the amendment in general, but I have …

This year will be my second year of french. I heard of the IB french exam (I'm still not sure what it is) but I was wondering if the exam will be hard since I will only take french for four years. Hello, I am trying to complete my WIT but I've run into a problem, my essential question is: To what extent is Zorba a wise character in the novel "Zorba the Greek" by Nikos Kazantazkis? My teacher gave me the go ahead (and said that "This has potential") but I have no idea how to approach this question (that I've made). My thesis (of which I have no idea how I made it): The extent to which Zorba is a wise character in the translated novel, Zorba the Greek, can be assessed by his actions, judgments, and experience. The problem I face is understanding and answering the question. Wise is a subjective term that means different things to different people, and that's the maj…

Hi all, For the IOC, is there any effective way to revise? It seems to be an on-the-spot thing given its nature as an oral presentation, unlike a regular commentary, so how should one revise for it? Should I just do practice IOCs in the mirror, or is there a more effective way? Cheers!

Hi guys, I just want to know, is there anyone here who will read and comment on my drafts for stuff like WL etc? My teacher is adhering strictly to the IB one-draft rule and I can't find another teacher who has the time to read the first couple drafts for me before I hand in to my teacher. And I'm really worried that I wouldn't be able to write to the grade I want if my second time is my final work. So will there be anyone who will peer edit or something here, or is that against the forum rules, or is there any other way I can get help? The official marking criterias can be kinda vague. Thanks

I chose the question: how could the text be read and interpreted differently by two different readers? for my written task 2 question. The article I chose to analyze is about Facebook and how it causes stress due to the wide range of 'friends' (such as coworkers, bosses, family, etc.) a user has. the 2 different readers I chose are a grandparent and a teen. I'm stumped on how to go about this. my teacher told me to "make sure it relates back to the text." and I sort of understand what he means... to be entirely honest, I didn't do well on my last written task 2 so ANY tips would be appreciated. thank you!

Hey everyone I was wondering if it's possible to change classes at the end of the first year of IB. I take English A Language and Literature HL at the request of my parents, but I'm really struggling with the teacher. My school made it possible to change classes at the beginning of the year, but my parents assured me that it would get better, but I was still doubting it. Now at the end of the year of grade 11, I've come to the conclusion that it just won't work out the way my parents assured me it would. Do you think it's possible to change classes?

Hi everyone! So I am writing my Written Assessment Essay about the book Perfume, by Patrick Suskind and I'm having a really hard time getting started. I dont really wanna write about the stuff that i wrote in my supervised writing, which was about postmodernism mostly. I kind of want my topic to be along the lines of scent, and/or the constant comparasins made between grenioulle and other animals (the tick) My teacher is kind of lazy, and doesn't explain things very well. So I'm having a hard time choosing a topic, and I also don't really know what exactly the essay needs to contain. Thank you!
