Hello, I will be starting my first year of the IB in January, and I'm not 100% sure about my subject choices. You see, I want to study medicine after the IB so I'm thinking of choosing Biology HL, Chemistry HL and Language and Literature HL. I'm pretty sure about Biology and Chemistry, but i'm doubtful about about the last one. On the first group I can choose between: -Literature in Spanish -Literature in English -Literature and Language in Spanish -Literature and Language in English So my question is, what do you do in Literature and Language? And should i choose it or just stick with Literature in English? As you can probably tell I'm pretty nervous! So any …

My Lang & Lit written task is on Part 2: Language and Mass communication-How language is used to manipulate and persuade a target audience, specifically through bias. For this piece I thought of writing two football match reports on the same match, but from different origins. One would be a neutral well known and respected sports website, such as ESPN, while the other view would be from the club itself, which is always going to be a bit biased. My teacher said that I should think about just writing one match report, instead of two. Even though this will increase the amount of content I can put into it, I feel that having two match reports will really highlight t…

I have an IOP to present in like 4 weeks and I don't know what to do my IOP on!!! We have the choice to do it on the George Orwell's essays, Othello, or poetry by Auden, W.B Yeats, or Heaney. Doe anyone have any general direction on how I should choose the perfect topic? Or any good works you would recommend? Or just advice on how to choose my topic? Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

Hello again, I recently got my results for my first F.O.A which was 20/30. I am still quite disappointed, and I want to improve so that I can get at least a 6. My teacher told me to use PEEL even further, so I was wondering how to improve on analysing texts, such as analysing speeches and other forms of texts? (Please don't say read more books, because it's not really helping me) And is there a way to practice and improve on the commentary for FOA (Not the real thing but just in general)? Any help is much appreciated. Thank you

I am currently in the process of making an FOA on part 1 of the english course. I want to talk about taboo and swearing, because this is what we have gone mostly through in class, since i am supposed to somehow involve culture into the matter i need some ideas as to how i should present. Some ideas of my own: - How the use of profanities in ads differ across cultures - Use of profanities in ads/literature differ today vs in the past I would preferably talk about ads, but i am also having a hard time finding suitable ones to use (that differs between cultures)

Hi, For our IOP, our teacher gave us a list of IOP topics and told us to pick one. I was wondering if we had an option as to if we were allowed to choose if we wanted to the teacher's or our own topic. I'd also like someone to confirm if it is mandatory to read all the IB books. My seniors have told me you only read the one you present on. Which doesn't sound all that right... Thanks

I'm starting with my WIT and I'm wondering which one of these 2 topics is better to use. Topic 1: How does the author use The Metamorphosis to criticize society? Topic 2: To what extent is the "metamorphosis" related to Gregor? In the second topic I'll talk about how the metamorphosis is not only about Gregor and how it could mean the metamorphosis of the whole family and each individual in the family.

Hello, I'm starting English Literature HL first semester in 2 days. I heard its one of the hardest subjects and its very hard to get a 7 in it. I got an 88 in Grade 10 English and I don't know how I'll be able to manage at least a 6 this year since that's like 93-96%, which is especially hard for an HL subject. Will I be able to survive English HL? Is it as terrifying as people say it is? One of my main issues is that I always saw English as an opinionated subject where you hand an assignment, essay, or whatever in and you pray that you got impressed the teacher, so I have no idea what to do to improve. Sometimes when my teachers add in annotations on mistakes on as…

Hi guys, I have to complete my Works in Translation first draft by Monday and after having written half of it I am a little worried on whether my topic of 'An analysis of different forms of conflict in Lorca's play Blood Wedding' is too broad or not worded correctly. I would be analysing the conflict between the families, conflict between ones' individual wishes versus societal laws and the conflict between nature and humankind. Can anyone assist me here?

I'm writing my Written Assignment in Part 1, Works in translation. My teacher has given everyone except me support. Quite literally. Anyways my question is "How is the theme of guilt affected by the setting in Bernhard Schlink's "The Reader?" I've written about 600 words on how the theme is influenced not only from the collective guilt of the German people although I'm not sure I'm coming from the right perspective. Any help would suffice as of late.

Hi, For my Written Task 2 we have to write on a book we read in class, Things Fall Apart, and that was one of the books I used in my EE (not the only book since that's against the rules). Would it be possible to include parts of my EE in my WT2? Would I get in trouble, or would it not be noticed as different examiners look at each and won't compare them?

Hey guys! So, for my IOP I'm doing Into The Forest by Jean Hegland and I'm looking at Nell's dreams. I've got EVERYTHING that i have to say, I'm prepared with all my points and evidence and quotes and everything, BUT..... I have no Idea how to present it. The thing is that I love being creative, and I am not as smart as I am creative, so I really want to pull off something fun an entertaining that will make my analysis more lighthearted and fun, but I just have no idea what to do!! My first idea was dressing up as a gypsy with a crystal ball and tarot cards and analysing the quotes in the book about her dreams but apparently I'm not allowed to as there is no gypsy in in…

Hey guys, so I was just wondering how I should go about writing my IOP? I have a book and a topic (haven't exactly got a thesis but I know what I'm talking about in it, plus I've got three weeks to do it so no stress), but I am not sure where to go from here. Is it possible that someone could send me a list of the things I am supposed to cover in it, and also some things that I shouldn't do? That would be great! Also, I have a few questions; I am planning to be a little bit more creative than usual in mine, and I was wondering if I am allowed to have another person act out the character I am analysing while I am talking to them like a... I guess therapist kind of thin…

Hey guys ! I am planning to do my WA on the book 'A doll's house', and because a lot of people in my grade have opted for this book, most of their topics is revolving around the same theme. Honestly, the book doesn't have a lot to offer, and so before going with the same theme, I just wanted to know whether it would be a problem if the entire class is focussing on the same topic. Please Help !

Hi lads, I chose to do my ee on computer science at first but my supervisor was an utter poo poo... so I recently changed and chose to do my ee on A1 English Language. I am quite stressing out at the moment on choosing a topic (followed by research questions)... I had some ideas on my mind (like doing a textual analysis on Black Boy by Richard Wright) but even this, I am quite not sure from what scope I should be tackling this... If anyone did/will be doing their Extended Essay on English Language, would be kind enough to give a suggestion for choosing a topic and possibly a research question? Enjoy your day,

I just started 2.i a few weeks ago and I chose English A Language + Literature HL. I love literature so I was really excited about that part, but it turns we won't work with literature until 3.i. At first I figured it was fine, but the language part is just so boring to me! Basically, I'm considering changing from lang + lit to lit. I really like my teacher though, he's very charismatic and great at teaching, which I don't know if the literature teacher is (my school isn't very good at hiring good IB teachers). One of my worries, though, is if the literature course is 1) too heavy, and 2) just generally "boring" - what I mean is, do you get tired of reading and analyzin…

I just started doing the IB programme and I'm already finding it tough. In case anyone wants to know, these are the subjects I'm taking: Biology HL Chemistry HL ITGS HL Math SL English A SL Malay B SL I got a D for English in my IGCSE exams. I'm assuming that a D is a 3/4 in IB grade and I really want a 5/6 when I take the exam. I know it will be difficult but I still want to try. Even if I get one advice, I would really appreciate it. Extra Information: I read quite a lot of novels, but my writing technique is still bad. I know I should read more books, articles and news, but to me, thats actually vague, so it doesn't really help me. I can try provide additiona…

Hi, I've just started my IB and I do need some help. I tried Lang&Lit for some time, but now I've switched to Eng Lit. I was wondering, how many books do we have to prepare for our FINAL IB EXAMS? Do we do ALL of he books we read in the two years time? OR Do we have to prepare some of them? OR Do we read different books for final examinations? OR Is it something else? THANKS TO ALL

Hello I am a South Korean student. I recently went into an italian school and I am taking the IB diploma at maybe... November in 2016. I am really concerned about language problems because you know, as I am a Korean student, my mother tongue language is Korean and I speak English too. However, my school doesn't offer Korean classes, so I was just planning to do English as my first language and Italian as my second language because my school only teaches English and Italian as a second language class... I may take the AB initio class for Italian but, you know that we have to take the standard level test for Italian no matter what class I am in. I am curious that wheth…

Hello members of IB Survival. I have my IOP due this semester and was wondering how to begin the process of making it. I am very confused. This is based upon MLK Jr.'s speeches. Thank you guys; I am very confused right now.

Im doing russian lit self study at my school (cause they dont have a russian teacher) and starting to prepare for paper 1 atm. I was wondering whats a ball park figure of how many words you should write for paper 1, especially for poetry cause i feel more comfortable with that rather than texts. When i practice i write about 400 words but that seems way to little. Any advice? Thank you !

Hello, fellow IBSers! I am currently editing my first draft of my WL essay; however I am not sure if my question is good enough. I am doing it on Chronicle of a Death Foretold, and my RS talked about Vicario remorse, honour, and machismo. My current essay title is Vicario Remorse: The effects of Latin-American machismo in Chronicle of a Death Foretold and my 'question' is How is Vicario remorse depicted and to what extent is this a result of machismo? Is my question okay, or do I need to make it tighter?

I aim to make this brief. (My teacher has already marked my draft but I haven't found his comments useful.) So I have my IOP coming up soon and I want to make sure I'm on the right track . Paragraph topics: - Exploring what is Problematic about identity - Exploring How perceptions of self, differ from other’s perceptions - Exploring how outside influences changes one's identity and to an extent a perception of the world. Ok so I'm done my World Lit paper and I just need to clean it up. For us, it's not going to get sent in until February so I got a lot of time to clean it up. The problem is that my essay has a bit of fluffy language and Idk if IB will like that. I've read exemplars and they were pretty clear cut and had zero fluff. I tend to incorporate fluffy language into a lot of my writing. Is it true that you get marks docked for having fluff in your writing in IB English Lit?

So I have a three week holiday at the moment and I have to prepare for my IOP. I also have to send in my topic and which book I am doing in to my teacher by the end of this week. So far we have studied Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Hamlet and Dotter of her Father's Eyes. I was thinking about doing something to do with how feminism is now being thought of empowering woman instead of equalizing all genders and I was going to relate to Dotter of her Father's Eyes and do possibly a diary entry of one of the characters. I was wondering what the ratio was in terms of whether I should talk mostly about the book and relate to the topic or talk mostly about the topic and relate…
