I'm doing my English EE on Little Women but I'm becoming worried that it's an overdone novel since it's a classic. Does anyone know how popular the book is for an English EE?

Hi, I have two possible topics for my WIT paper and I have no idea which would make a better paper. Here are my plans for them: Thesis 1: Garcia Marquez’s depiction of shared guilt in Chronicle of a Death Foretold serves to illustrate the peculiarities of human nature. Point 1: The routines and rituals that dominate the characters’ lives are almost animalistic. 2: The characters’ obsession with the fact that the death is fated to happen is part of what allows them to be complicit in the murder. 3: The characters experience a profound sense of guilt over the crime. Thesis 2: In Paradise of the Blind, Huong uses symbolism in order to represent unfulfilled…

I'm literally panicking now. I didn't sleep well last night. I panicked over my IOC and didn't state a thesis statement or a conclusion for it and ran out of time because I was mumbling and focused on diction. I'm so scared I'll fail my English because of my IOC. I'm worried maybe I might get a 7 or at most 11 because I didn't say things properly. I studied hard and I wrote a lot of notes, I was just bad at speaking in a formal way. I'm honestly scared to the point I cried the whole night and really thought of probably quitting IB because I don't think I'm gonna pass the other subjects with commentaries. I feel horrible...

After getting bad marks on my semester exams for the commentary and comparative, i've been reconsidering English HL... 1/ Is English different to other subjects in that we're doing year 12 work right from year 11 and it's expected you do badly in year 11 because unlike maths, you don't have tests on topics that progressively become harder 2/ Is HL much harder than SL or not? I've heard from some that it's an 'easy' HL? THanks!

Hi, I did really poorly in French in grade 10 and next year is the real beginning of the IB programme. I want to get a 7 and I'm planning to work really hard these next 2-3 months to improve my French to that level. So I'd like to know: Which books should I get to really bring my French to the next level (I want to get a 7)? What themes in vocabulary should I be focusing on, anything in specific that will help me on IB papers or what not? I heard for grade 11 IB HL French, you don't really need to know much grammar other than last year's, but vocabulary is the main focus. I plan to be speaking French and really working on the accent with the many CD's and DVD's I bo…

Hi guys! I'm starting the IB program this coming September, and I was hoping that you might be able to help me compile a list of books that will get me into the reading "mood" or "zone", if you will. I, myself, really do love reading, but I find that if I get too lazy to find good books, I kind of just drift towards the YA novels (which are interesting, just not really analyze-able). I went through some of the posts on this forum and have this list so far: The Guns of Navarone by Alistair MacLean Remarque's "All Quiet on the Western Front" "The Wars" by Timothy Findley The Sailor Who Fell from Grace with the Sea The Importance of Being Earnest. The Age of Innocence.…

hey guys, it's too late now because my WA is due tomorrow but I realized I'm having a pretty hard time getting rid of passive voice (or sometimes even spotting it). I thought that even though I can't do anything really about my WA, it would be good to learn how to get rid of it for future papers, in all subjects. I don't know. do you guys have any tips for spotting and ridding of passive voice?

Hello, I did my Written Task 1 on the gaming debate, where I wrote from the perspective of a pro-gaming magazine article writer. I wanted to show a different perspective to the perspective and minorly how communities are created, how language in magazines are used, etc. For my Written Task 2 I started writing a film review on a movie - pretty much a normal review. There is not a lot one can vary in a film review, but can I just write a normal review on a movie? Do my topics fit the parts? I can't tell myself because my teacher didn't say anything but changes her mind whenever she feels like it..

I'm really confused about the whole WA-essay.. actually, I'm not even sure whether it is WA essay or WL essay that I have to do All I know is that - this essay must be completed before summer (I'm currently in IB1) - it's 1200 words (is the word count same in Finnish?) - you have to analyse a book, using a certain focus My current topic is "Discrimination in Albert Camus' The Stranger", but I've written nothing. I originally had an awesome idea about talking about "White man's burden", but then suddenly 3 people in our class wanted to write about it... and now I have to inspect the thing from the psychological point of view If someone has examples of (Finnish) WA-…

So when we analyse, it's not about identifying devices/styles etc... but more about understanding the purpose of them in relation to texts. I'm trying to make a list of the purposes of using literary devices but really need help as the info/reasons i give probably doesn't suffice THE PURPOSE OF: Rhyme Makes lines memorable Structure allows a uniformity Can put emphasis on certain words Can give a finality Repetition Reinforces idea/theme Meter Keeps poem in harmony Creates mood Enjambment To convey its message without being restricted

So in about 1 hour starts my final exam, Language A1 Literature (Finnish). As you might have figured out from the title, i do not speak this language as my mother tongue. In fact, the first time i heard the language was about 4 or 5 years ago, after which i spent almost a year learning to speak it (language courses). Nevertheless, when i moved into this country and wanted to go to IB, i was basically forced to take Finnish as my A1 Literature subject, as there really weren't any other options available (I already have English A L&L)... My predicted grade in Finnish is 4, which i suppose can be considered to be quite good, even though i'm greatly hindered by the f…

While going through my Paper 2 plays for the final time, I have noticed that in one of the plays that we have studied, the "n" word is frequently employed (the play is Joe Turner's Come and Gone by August Wilson). Thus, on the exam, I'm not sure how I should quote the play if a certain quotation contains that word! I am not particularly comfortable using the word, but I am unsure if I can simply write "n---", or something along those lines on the exam. So, my question is, will the examiner understand and is it acceptable if I write something like "n---" instead of the actual word, or should I actually use the term in my quotations?

for paper 2, are you allowed to use 3 authors interchangeably? Like for instance, I mention in my thesis that I will be exploring the works of poet A and B, but later on in the essay, I introduce poet C as an alternative idea? will this be too messy?

Hey all, I'm not entirely sure if this is the right place to ask, but I need some help. Next week I will be writing a paper 1 and paper 2 for IB English HL. I'm currently analysing the two plays for my Paper 2: ''Master Harold'' and the boys & Death and the Maiden. I know enough about the characters, context, themes, symbols, motifs, authors, quotes.. etc. but there are a few things that I need help with: - Why did both authors chose for an open ending and what is its purpose? - What are the most important stylistic devices used and what are their purposes? Any help would be appreciated a lot Chaes

So I'm writing my supervised writing paper in a few days and my teacher has presented us with a sheet of prompts. I don't really find much interest in any of these prompts and would dread to write about any of them for the Written Assignment. I was just wondering if it's true that the supervised writing I write in a few days will have to be similar to the WA I'll write later on. Hope that was clear! Thanks

Hi, I'm a grade 10 student going into grade 11 IB programme, and it's my first year. I sucked at French this year (got around an 87 or so), and I got by because the teacher was really nice and always helped me out in whatever way possible. I realize French is my weakest subject and I'll be taking two French subjects next year, so is there any way to prepare? Any way to begin getting really good at French so that I can ace the subject? I'll be studying it really in-depth from pretty much today till the end of August so that I get really good prep for it and I come in with a bang. Any advice/suggestions/etc? Thanks.

Hey everyone, Next Tuesday I have to present a maximum 15 minute FOA on Part 1 (Language in Cultural Context). I noticed that a lot of people did their FOAs in groups, but my class requires that we do it individually, and we can only do speeches (none of those presentations and other fancy stuff). So for my FOA, I chose to speak about the song "Can't Cry" by J. Cole since it does go into the details of the struggles and identity in the black community. I spoke to my teacher, and she thinks its fine and I should be able to do it, as long as I censor the lyrics. However, funnily enough, I have no idea how to go about doing this. I tried to look around for some forums…

Hi everyone, Would anyone be able to give me some help with my Written Assignment on A Doll's House? I have finished but not sure if I have included what I need to. If you are willing to help- I can send a copy of it to you I am focussing on the characterisation of Nora and am tracing the development of her being a 'doll' to a 'women rebel. In particular look at some literary and linguistic techniques that complete Nora’s journey from inside the “doll’s house†to deserting it in resolution. Thank you in advance Angel

Hi! My English teacher is very good, but she apparently got a little messed up with the IB guides. The guide explains that the WT2 is a critical essay in response to a book covered in the syllabus. My options are pretty limited, as I find our entire syllabus boring as hell, it's all about black people, colonialism, and african culture. Besides, our books are very odd and inaccessible to read, such as Jane Eyre and Wide Sargasso Sea. My teacher said that if I don't feel enormously enthusiastic about any of these, I could pick a book of my own that I felt could help me to explain colonialism and imperialism. I love The Time Machine, and so I am already halfway my essay,…

IOP and POP topic

So, we have our practice IOP (POP) coming up in about a week, and thankfully I have some good options that I can use. However, as I have a habit of planning for the future, I want to save the best one I can possibly do for my IOP, so I have enough to talk about it. I'm planning on doing this poem, but in class we've already studied another poem by the same poet which has similar themes. If I use the first poem in the practice, then do a comparative in the actual IOP between the two poems, would I be breaking the rules? My teacher has told me that it's borderline, but it's probably fine, but I just wanted another opinion, if possible. Thanks in advance!

I'm not super secure in my abilities in literary analysis. IB really demands a lot. I'm trying to get an idea of the passages (both prose and poetry) they use so I'll feel a little more prepared and know what to expect for Paper 1. Does anybody know where I can find a list of all the texts used in past Paper 1 exams for English literature? I have no idea if they use different texts for SL and HL, but I am taking HL. Thanks!

Hello, I am sure some of you writing your exams in the next few months or the next year will find this helpful. I am writing to ask how to further improve my poetry analysis skills before the exam. When I read a poem, here is how I approach the commentary: 1) I read it again 2) I look for the main idea 3) I note down any aspects I see fit the following categories: speaker, setting, structure, tone, title, themes, literary devices 4) I then construct my thesis statement, and essay outline 5) I write my commentary I have read through many past HL and SL poems and done some analysis on them to practice. However, I usually find my interpretation off or inaccurate to ot…
