Hey everyone, I was wondering if any of you had ANY notes for "A View from the Bridge" and "A Streetcar Named Desire". I have a few notes on each of the plays, but I was hoping some of you would have notes too, notes comparing the 2 plays possibly? Best of luck everyone.

So one of the main tips I've heard to score high on the IB English Exam is to memorize a few, short, key quotes for the essays. I know when you quote things for English you always put (Author's Last Name, Pg. Number) but when you're writing for an IB exam do I need to put what what page number the quote is on? I feel like the examiners will be suspicious that you cheated if you do that.

Hi all, I have recently submitted my english A written task (Creative writing) and at first I was pretty glad it was over... But when I think about it, I only briefly mentioned my inspiration which was a video in my rationale and did not make a proper reference for anything. Even though I did not copy and paste any content, I am still very worried that the IB will take it as plagiarism as the content of my written task was inspired by the video and they share certain similarities. I really need your advice/help...

Hey guys, I have to write an analysis essay on the Scarlet Letter, and I don't know if my topic is good or not. I need some advice! It would help if you're familiar with the work but I value all opinions! So in the book, Hawthorne strategically capitalizes certain nouns, for example: "He had been driven hither by the impulse of that Remorse which dogged him everywhere, and whose own sister and closely linked companion was that Cowardice...", etc. My essay is about how Hawthorne uses this technique and makes these words into "characters" through personification to show the effect of sin on the main characters. Thoughts? Greatly appreciated!

I'm working on my extended essay and my mentor figured my essay would be stronger if I did a comparison story to back up my original story, which is Tender is the Night by F. Scott Fitzgerald. I was wondering if anyone knew any short stories, that is similar to Tender is the Night, that I could use for my Extended Essay.

Hi all, I am doing some unseen poetry for paper 1 revision. I was wondering if anyone could provide a helpful insight into this poem as I am finding it difficult to 'find a way in'. I think I understand it's non figurative meaning- it is telling the story of the creation of the world as portrayed in Genesis 1 in the Old Testament of the Bible. I think that this poem is getting at how the world was created with fault and there is a conflict between the regenerate nature (and afterlife) and disposable/limited nature of life. There are many techniques/observations (iambic pentameter/enjambment/rhyme/alliteration) that I have made on this poem but am finding it diff…

Hi All! I am studying Les Murray as one of my four poets for the literary conventions paper (paper 2). I was wondering if anyone could help me with analysing the following poems by Les Murray; "The Tin Wash Dish" and "Cave Divers near Mount Gambier". From reading The Tin Wash Dish, I think that this poem is about the way in which society treats those affected by poverty and is essentially the personification of poverty. However, I need some help analysing the language and structure in more depth. As for the second poem, Cave Divers near amount Gambier, I interpret it to be about abundance of wildlife and traditions. Also, is there any significance of the two li…

Guys, we've got three novels to work on for paper 2; the adventures of huckleberry finn, things fall apart and the the sea of poppies. i really enjoy the first two, but equally dislike the third one (mainly because I haven't read it completely ) anyway, I'm planning on studying only 2 novels in detail. is that a sensible strategy for p2 or not? In past paper questions i have generally seen '...at least two...' what do you guys think?

I'm doing my extended essay in English Lit and I was thinking of doing A Doll's House by Henrik Ibsen. I even ordered the book and it's due in a few days. I also asked my teacher and she said it's a good book to analyse. However, just today I realized the play was originally written in Norwegian, and we aren't allowed to use translated works unless we know the original language as well, right? But then I've also seen a thread here by someone who did the same play, except I'm not sure if they did it in English and Norwegian. So is this play allowed or not?

Hello there! So today I went into my local bookstore to find a couple of study guides to help me understanding my subjects better, and I came across two English Literature "course companion", or textbooks. I take English Literature HL and as of now my results is fluctuating between 5 and 6, and I would like to have a good 6 or even a 7 to boost my overall points. The textbooks I saw are by Cambridge Press and Pearson Baccalaureate. Does anyone have either one or both of them? How are they like, are they useful in any way in guiding all the IAs and P1 and P2? My teacher didn't make us buy one, instead just asking us to get the 13 works we're studying. I know it's not esse…

Does anyone know where can I find example of high scoring english paper 1 essay? I couldn't find it anywhere in the internet. I saw it in this site though, but you need to be a VIP member in order to be able to download it, and I can't really know that the papers here (http://www.ibsurvival.com/files/category/19-sample-essays/) are the high scoring one or not. Please help. I have read many tips and techniques but those don't really help me. What I really want is an actual paper that will allow me to understand how the content/analysis develop.

Hi guys, I understand that when writing a written task for Part 2, we are supposed to explore how language is used in the mass media to sway public opinions. Most of us will take a stance in regards to an issue circulating in the media. However, will the moderator be offended by the position we take and what we say in our written tasks? For example, I argue that the Russian media is one-sided in its portrayal of its recent invasion of Ukraine. I talk about how the Russian media claims that Russia is just defending the freedom of Russian people living in Ukraine and its naval base there, while in reality, they are just using this as an excuse to invade Ukraine and this act…

I take self-taught, and there is no teacher's support at all. So, since many people take English A, and I hope there are people with self-taught past experience, do you have any tips from teachers or personal experience on how to do well in Paper 1? what should I think of and what IB is looking for. In DP1 finals all self-taught students automatically got 4, no feedback on essays, so I didn't even know whether it was good or bad.

Can someone very simply distinguish between Language A: Literature and Language A: Language and Literature for me?

Title says it all, sorry if it's kinda confusing. I assume the difference between the two is that Literature is solely focused on, well, literature but the Language and Literature subject includes some amount of learning of the language A in addition to a literary component. Is this all there is? If someone could describe the difference completely, that would be much appreciated Thanks!

Hi everyone! I am starting to write my WL essay, and my teacher said that we need an extra-strong thesis to get a good mark. I was wondering if I could get some feedback on mine, to make sure I'm heading off in the right direction. I am doing my essay on Flaubert's Madam Bovary. The prompt: Justify the claim that a central theme is developed when a central character finds it impossible to achieve his/her aspirations in the circumstances in which he/she lives. My thesis: In Madam Bovary, Flaubert develops the theme that a woman's circumstance is developed by the men around her by making it impossible for Emma to independently achieve her goal of raising her social status. …

Hi everyone, My English teacher said that to score high marks on the WL essay, we needed to have a really strong thesis. I was wondering if anyone could give me feedback on mine. I'm doing my essay on A Doll's House by Henrik Ibsen. The prompt was: To what extent does setting affect a character's actions and reveal theme in A Doll's House? My thesis: In a Doll's House, the setting of 19th century Norway affects characters' actions and thus reveals their perspective on morality. Do you think this is a strong thesis or how could I make it better? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

Hi guys, i am asking for help for the paper 2 genre paper. I am studying the genre of drama, in particular, the plays "The Crucible", "Importance of being Earnest" and "Waiting for Godot". I would like to ask if anyone has any quotes from the books, useful notes, or tips to help me find notes, or even any websites that may have useful notes or information about the plays. One problem is how our teachers have taught it, is that it seems to skate over the text rather than directly tackeling the types of skills of analysing and answering the paper 2 style questions. I have tried finding quotes, but the problem is that I either find too many vague quotes that dont relate well…

My exams are in 3 months, and we still have not done the IOP and IOC. But most importantly, what is the IOP and IOC? Oh, and also, what is the WL? So many abbreviations! How should these be done and when? Unfortunately, my English teacher is new and does not know much about IB. We are also supposed to do 4 written tasks, 2 of which we already did last year - what is this part of? As far as I understand, in Language A1 there is the IOC, IOP and the written tasks in English, in addition to the IB Exams. Any advice is greatly appreciated, thank you!

Hi there everyone; I'm sorry if you'll see this as a stupid question, but right now I am choosing the written tasks that are to be submitted. The problem is, I think the best ones are the WT2 for part 4 of the course, and the WT1 for part 3, so they both concern the literary works and I've heard that in such situation my tasks are more likely to get a lower grade. Is it true, and still, if I think that these are the best ones (and I love them personally, which is a great success as in most cases I hate everything I'm writing for school), should I risk it? best regards

Hi everyone, My class has just been given our IOP notification and we have just under three months to prepare it. The lists of texts we can study are the visit, talking heads and poetry specifically Caroline Ann Duffy from an ib anthology. Does anyone have experience in any of these topics and some feedback regarding the most appropriate choice? I've heard doing a straight analysis of a poem is a valid option. Any help would be kindly appreciated.

Hello, I´m from Uruguay and this year I´ll be starting my second year. Last year in my english language and literature HL course we did a lot of things, one was writing our first two tasks, WT1 AND WT2. Our WT1 last year was about literature (this year it will be about media) and WT2 about media (now it will be literature) I had a problem and it is the following: When we wrote WT1 it was about Macbeth and I hated it. I did a letter first, which then turned into a "musical". This musical has only three songs, and I got really stucked with it, my teacher told me to create a dance and "melody" I think, but I really don´t know what to do with it.
