Hi, I just started IB last week. These are my courses that i'm taking: HL Physics Econ Film SL English Lang & Lit Spanish B Math I'm facing a dilemma choosing between English Lang & Lit A and Self-Taught A1 (Thai). I'm study in China so I can take either English or Thai both in SL for language A. I'm ok with both Thai and English literatures (except for english poems...). But English is my second language and taking English A1 might reduce my overall score (._.). If I choose to take Self Taught course then I will change Spanish B SL to English B HL. I'm planning to study engineering program in Thailand or United States. So whether i'm English A1 or English B, I s…

we've got 'istanbul:memories and the city-orhan pamuk' and 'waiting for godot-samuel beckett' since i don't really know what this essay has to be based on and don't have a good idea of the whole written assignment thing, which one would you suggest me to work on? being lazy, i'm thinking waiting for godot is short so it may be the better option.. since i haven't read the other novel.. i'm confused.

Hey guys! So, I am starting to write my World Lit essay for the English SL course. The two plays my class read were: A Doll's House by Henrik Ibsen and The Cherry Orchard by Anton Chekhov. Now, my teacher said that the World Lit has to show 'progression' from my in-class writing. So, the topics for my in-class writing were: Doll's House - What effect can an audience member's own social perspective have on their interpretation of the play and its central message and characters. Cherry Orchard - Money and Economics are at the heart of the play in The Cherry Orchard. Comment on the role they play and how they are represented by Chekhov. So, currently I have an idea in my mi…

Hi, this summer we are supposed to start our IA on our World Literature unit for English A1 HL. However, we have been given little guidance on it. Can anyone give any advice on what the markers are looking for in the IA? What makes a good IA question for this subject? PS. If any of you did it on A Doll's House by Henrik Ibsen, what did you do it on i.e. what was your question? and what mark did it get? Thank you

Hello all, Could anyone please help me with finding a relevant RQ for Category 3 EE in English? My current topic is women's portrayal in print-advertisements by Virginia Slims cigarette brand. The idea was to discuss how advertisers exploit women's aspirations to sell their product. According to the guide, topics in cat3 must be presented in context of specific culture/cultures or media, and here I am a little stuck. Also, I am not sure what kind of argument I could develop with that topic. All the help will be much appreciated.

Hey, Im taking Danish A1 Lit as a subject for IB and since i live in the Middel East i take it as a self-taught subject. I am not very advanced in Danish and therefore i am paying for a teacher to help me from denmark. This all happens over the Internet. I was wondering if anyone has any experience with a selftaught language in IB. Is it difficult or okay to take? Do you have any useful tips? I appreciate any sort of comments and help. Thankyou, Freja

So hey guys, I'm supposed to write my written assignment for English, but I don't know where to start and I'm struggling. It gets send to the IBO right? What exactly are they looking for in the assignment? The assessment rubric isn't really that helpful. What kind of content should I provide in order to get a good grade? To what extent does it have to be related to the supervised writing? I'm kind of nervous cause English is my weak subject and the written assignment is worth like 20% of your overall grade. BTW if it helps, I chose the play Medea by Euripides and my prompt is "How does Euripides characterize Medea to be a believable character to Jason through her interact…

I finished my IOP about a month ago with a 27/30 - i'm proud but i could've definitely done better (i literally did it the night before it was due). I thought i'd give the people who are out there and haven't done their IOPs some tips. 1. STOP STRESSING! Of course, being a bit stressed is necessary but i often see people pulling their hair out about their IOP. Honestly, if you have analysed your material thoroughly, planned well and know what you are going to talk about, it is not that worth stressing over! 2. Choosing a topic For those of you who are like me and spend AGES trying to find the PERFECT topic - don't! i've just realised, the best thing to conquer this habit …

Our teacher assigned three poems for us to explicate and to write a commentary in regards to them, and I'm drawing a blank. I get that it's probably similar to doing prose, but she gave us no instruction, other than a couple of guiding questions that were supposed to help us. I don't know what it is about poems, but I just struggle for whatever reason with understanding them. If it's helpful, we're doing "Blackberry Picking", "Digging", and "Follower" by Seamus Heaney. I just need whatever tips you guys have that helps you go through and explicate poems/ write commentaries on them. After all, once the school year starts, if I can't do this...

Hi Everyone, My IOP is due in a few weeks time, and I am really worrying because this is the first assessment that is actually counting towards the final grade. I am doing it on Martin Luther King Speeches, one of my school's Part 4 Works. I have a topic, and I was wondering if you guys think that it is too broad/narrow? Also, any feedback on writing the actual IOP would be really helpful. I was reading through the other posts on the forum, and they all seem to be about the actual presentation. I am pretty confident about that, but the actual writing is the worry! My topic is concerning Martin Luther King's ideas about justice, ie how he arrived at his positions and what …

Hi there everyone, Right now I am writing Eng world lit assignment on the topic: "How do the people become inhuman and lose their moral values during the time of war?" And my analysis is that during war common civilians and soldiers become ruthless and soldiers are known for the barbaric deeds committed during the period of war. The reason I gave was that people and soldiers face serious mental trauma due to problems like poverty, witnessing the death of near and dear ones, slow torture from starvation and injuries and many more. I also mentioned in my assignment that politicians and the rulers ( who started the wars) does not suffer from the consequences of the war. ( …

I'm a bit confused about the standards for the World Lits. It has to be directly literary, but what does that mean, exactly? Also, how directly does your WL have to be related to a supervised essay that you did in class on that same work? Mine is on "The Outsider", by Camus. My supervised essay was on the topic, "What does Camus mean when he says that Meursault represents the only Christ we deserve?" The topic I chose for WL was Meursault's mental state and its representation in the novel. How do I tie these two in together to the standards? Help! Thanks!

Hello everyone So basically, I've started writing my world lit essay on, "The Damaging Effects of War on the Female Characters of Mother Courage and Her Children by Bertolt Brecht." I've finished writing my introduction which is pretty good, but when it comes to writing the main body of the essay, I just get stuck! Am I suppose to actively analyse the reasons for their ruin in the play? Or just give a narrative? Should I go scene by scene or just write about the play as a whole? Thank you in advance!

Hi, so we have been doing our collaborative interactive orals (not sure if they're the same as IOP) for some time now, and I have already written several reflective statements. The problem is, I'm not sure if I'm doing them right. We have to answer the question: How was your understanding of cultural and contextual considerations of the work developed through the interactive oral? I'm not entirely sure what that means. What I have been doing this whole time is summarize what each interactive oral talked about (i.e. different underlying themes in the text, symbols, etc.). Is this what you are supposed to do to? Because I don't believe I talked about CULTURAL relevance. Al…

Hello, my final world literature essay is due in 1 week, the last topic that i wrote my example on was too poorly expressed, and thus my teacher advised that i change topics. So i have therefor come to the topic of The use of empowerment and dis-empowerment and how it is observed between the character conflicts of Gerardo and Paulina Escobar from ' Death and the Maiden' in comparison to that of Nora and Torvald from 'A Dolls House' Please aid me in defining this question if need be or offer any advice that you can, i am in desperate need as i am a little worried it is not strong enough or possibly does not have enough backing behind it.

Hello people: I've been kind of having trouble with English of late. My grades, ever since the start of IB, has been sh*t (well, only in English)...not the asian kind of bad, but the passing kind of bad... here is the list of my grades for each assessment Unseen commetnary: 12/20 One flew essay: 15/25 (after correction) Like water essay: 18.5/25 however, my latest assignment is the biggest bring down, I've got 12.5/20; which is extremely **** considering that people who are generally worse than me in English got higher scores... while bullsh*tting about essentially the same thing. I've been uneasy of late because I don't want english to end up dragging my scores down. I'…

Hey everybody, just joined, I need help with my WIT paper thesis. We had to base it off of an essay topic we did in class. My topic was: Analyze the treatment of women and of people of color in the novel, particularly given the historical context of The Stranger. My thesis was: In The Stranger, racism and sexism is shown throughout the whole text through the setting, character relations, and ignorance. My teacher commented on it saying the following: This is not a thesis. What are you proving? By saying racism is shown,,,, you are identifying a fact. Yes, racism is evident. But what underlying message does Camus convey? What literary conventions help develop the author’s…

Hi guys It's time for me to write my world literature essay but I'm a bit worried that the topic I've chosen is too narrow. I've chosen to write from M. Does the question sound good or should I change it? I really want to write a good essay so any kind of help would be appreciated

Hey guys, i just have a question about this novel, because i need to write a written task about it. My RQ is how the stylistic devices are connected with the intentional effects of the author, in the novel. To explain more in detail, i mean how dialogues, silences and the open ending is a tool, to create a similar atmosphere like in the time, when chile was changed to a democracy and this commission was created to help identify the criminals, in the time of the dictatorship. Now, the stylistic i want to use are the incomplete sentences between gerardo and paulina (kind of like action-> reaction), how she always completes his sentences, when he has trouble expressing hi…

Hey! So, I got back a commentary I had written in my English final on a poem Behaviour of Fish in an Egyptian Tea Garden. I ended up getting a 6 on this commentary. The 6 doesn't bother me, what annoys me is the reason I was given for not getting a 7. My English teacher said, "The poem is about a woman seducing and manipulating men with her charm and beauty and seduction abilities." I said the poem was about lecherous men who were tots put on edge by a beautiful, provocative woman who saw no reason to mask her independence and beauty. Suffice to say, I had a very feminist take on the whole thing...and I clarified, that it isn't necessarily the author's intent, but the moo…
