Hello, I was wondering whether any of you would be willing to read a commentary I've written on an old P1 (English A SL) and give feedback. I would ask my teacher, but she is going through some personal issues, so she's not available. It's not terribly long, and I would be very grateful! Thanks for reading this

Hi, I have chosen to write my WA on "the stranger" and now I have some questions. 1. My idea is to write about "Raymond's influence on Mersault´s actions (for example the letter and the murder) Does this sound like a good idea? Am I going to come up with enough facts and explanations to make it into a 1200-1500 word essay? 2. What about external sources? Should I write the essay only using my own facts and explanations, or should I use some sources as well? Thanks alot, Daniel.

IOP due in two weeks. For a practice IOP I did Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer and compared McCandless to Shakespeare's tragic heroes. Teacher thought it was excellent. Would I be able to do that for the actual thing? Or should I only talk about the work? I was thinking seeing the characters in this second work as a tragic hero would put them into relief. Thank you

Hey Guys, So my IOP is scheduled for 4th, 5th and 6th of March (2015) and I am freaking it out because I haven't done anything for it besides finalising my topic with my teacher. I am doing my prez on The Great Gatsby and I watched a couple of IOPs on YT and they were EPIC!! There's no way I can reach that level of perfection because of my stage fright! The first part I need advice is how to get the content itself. My topic is rather broad so I'll have to do a lot of re reading first because I haven't touched the book since we finished it in school (a couple of months back). How much time did you guys take to actually get all the analysis down on paper? I am planning …

Hi guys, I need to think of a WA topic and since all the other books that we've covered were pretty boring for me (no that I particularly embedded myself in Persepolis) I decided to write it on Persepolis. Does any of you know good essays or critics' reviews on Persepolis that I could use for inspiration? Thanks in advance

I'm really suck on how to format my commentary. My teacher has said that NOT to structure it by the structure of the piece being analyzed by rather by the ideas. How would I group the ideas together and how would I separate the ideas? Also, what would be a good way of improving my general commentary, or just general IB English literature skills? Thanks guys!

For my works in translation paper I was looking at Ghosts by Henrik Ibsen and I decided to analyze how Ibsen used the traits inherited by Regina from her parents to show that selfishness is necessary for success. I looked at all the traits she inherited from Alving, Engstrand and Joanna and how it lead Regina to be successful in the sense that she was able to escape the duty bound fate like Mrs. ALving. However, my teacher said this was superficial and read more like a thematic character sketch than an essay. I need to figure out how to go deeper with my topic or how to approach this topic (or one similar too it) differently. I also don't understand how to approach the WL…

Is anybody studying Desa Salji? What is the story mainly about? The language used for Desa Salji is hard to understand though. Literalism much.

Hey guys, my IB subject choice forms are due pretty soon, and I am not quite sure about which English course I want to pick yet... I'm probably gonna go with Literature, although I don't really understand the difference between this subject and Language & Literature - can you help me out? Also, is there a tremendous difference in terms of workload between HL and SL? What's your experience? Lastly, I must confess that I have cheated quite a bit in the past english/history assessments (anything to do with essays, really), simply because I couldn't cope with the short time period we have to complete a complex essay. In our school, we usually get 2 periods (50 mins) to c…

Hi. I'm writing my WIT essay on Lorca's symbolisms and its representations of repressed groups in "Blood Wedding". I've written about Mother + Bride as repression of women, red/blood as repression of people who desire freedom/repression of 'sinners', Woodcutters + Moon as repression of freedom and individuals. I am aware that the Beggar Woman is a major symbol, however I've only mentioned very VERY briefly about her in my essay and my essay have already exceeded the word count. Is it silly to not write about the Beggar Woman? Thanks.

Hi. Like the title says, I need help in general when it comes to IB English A Literature. English was always my favorite subject and I was one of the top students in my class, but now I'm just lost I got 6s and even 7s occasionally in year 1, but in year 2 I never understand what my teacher wants. I consistently get 5s on commentaries done in class. I recorded an IOC and got a 5, while there were plenty in my class who hate English and never read in their free time (like I do) who got 6s. They just tell me to read the rubric in order to improve when I ask them for advice The problem is when I analyze; there's always a "scientifically" correct answer with this teac…

Hi IBers! I have begun to write my Written Task 1, and I am portraying Manny from Modern Family, and discussing how the men in the show are portrayed (Discussing mainly sexism). But I have a question, is it okay that my source text is not a specific episode, and is it also okay that my character, Manny, actually does not write opinion columns for his school's newspaper, but in the task I assume that he does so? Thanks in advance for any help!

I have to deliver my Literature A1 in a few days but I have a few doubts about it. Our teacher told us that until the last year all students had had good grades in the (sic) World Lit assignements. However a friend of mine did some investigation and found that the World Lit was no longer being done (since 2013, if I am not mistaken) and had been replaced by a written assignement, which is something slightly different. He also found some examples on the Internet that were not so related with what we were told to do, from a structural point of view. Contentwise, I have no questions. I am confident in what I have done. My doubts are related with the structure. Our te…

Hello everyone! I have a question: I am a HL student of English and I need to write my Written Task ASAP. My WT1 is based on Literature, so the WT2 has to be on Language & Context or Language & Mass Media. I would love to do an analysis of a film or an animated series, but my teacher tells me that I need to have a transcript of the entire movie/episode if I want to do that. Is that true? Is it even allowed?

Hey! I have two weeks to finish my IOP and I am really stuck. I am trying to do mine on plot structures between two novels (Things Fall Apart and Fasting, Feasting) and although I was done a draft that I meant to work on it more, my teacher reminded me that I don't have a point that I am getting across. Basically, (no matter if you read the books or not) is it possible to find anything through plot structures? Should I use a different topic instead?

I'm struggling a bit with my literature classes at the moment and feel a bit lost in the world of literary analysis. What I'm looking for is essays, preferably graded 7 or at level 7. I think I'm definitely a person who learns by imitating others and I feel like I need something to go back and refer to as my teacher hasn't really been that clear about what a level 7 essay looks like. I've found the Nardvark blog which had some good texts on the different criterias and what to think about. I've also seen the thread here on IBS on the essays in the files ().%C2'> anyone know of other websites that provides essay examples?

hey there! I am choosing my topic for the written assignment of Part 1 - Literature in Translation. I want to know if I have to choose one literary device (i.e. narrative voice) and explain all the purposes, implications and effects or I can chose a theme from the novel and explore different techniques used (i.e. the theme of machismo, exploring the techniques of characterisation and symbol) My idea would be exploring ONE theme (machismo) and the way it is conveyed through ONE LITERARY DEVICE (characterisation). Could that be a valid possibility? Thank you very much

Hi, my written assignment is on Candide and I was wondering if someone could help me First, I would like some help with my question. Currently it is "How did Voltaire display his views on the Catholic Church in Candide?" I was wondering if "In what ways did Voltaire display a negative view on the Catholic Church through Candide?" would be worded better. I want to answer how Voltaire shows his views on the Catholic Church (which are negative) through the novella Candide and am a bit stuck with how to properly word the question so I can answer that without being too broad. The last thing I need help with is some tips for Sections D and E. I feel that my topic all…

Hey guys, so I have to chose a topic for my IOP, and I have no idea if this one's alright - an analysis of the literary devices and techniques used in the Queen Mab speech in Romeo and Juliet. (Just google it if you haven't heard of it - its pretty famous and just a page) I see kids in my class picking topics like "The theme of love in the poems of Elizabeth Browning and Jump and other stories" so I'm slightly worried about that, since it seems far more general than mine. By the way, Merry Christmas!

Hello, My teacher assigned the IOP to our class (10 minutes with the optional aid of a PowerPoint) and gave us the option of using the works of Sylvia Plath's "Ariel" poems, the Zora Neale Hurston essays, or Sophocles' Antigone. I chose to do Sylvia Plath's Ariel poems, discussing (monologue) the significance of the themes in select poems (about 2-3) and how different parts of her life influenced her writing. I wanted to know if this is good topic to use for the IOP and if its to broad or narrow, and if anyone had any tips or guidelines in forming an IOP like this. Any and all help will be much appreciated.

Hey guys, so I've decided to write my Written Assignment on Bao Ninh's Sorrow of War, and basically my topic is: To what extent does Kien's father represent the state of turmoil caused by War in Ninh's Sorrow of War? My main arguments are how his paintings foreshadow the destruction caused by war and how Kien's father's sleepwalking habit can be seen as an allegory for the state of disillusionment of the veterans when they return from war and finally, the disparity between the intellectual side of Vietnam and the emerging communist/working-class ideologies Do these arguments seem okay? Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Hello guys, so I've planned to do my IOP on The Maus by Art Spiegelman. My IOP's gonna be a analytical + creative one. I'm gonna self write some diary entries of one of the minor character in the book, Richieu. I want to describe his young life before he was poisoned by his aunt to prevent from being sent to the gas chambers. My analysis part will be mainly on the emotive language he used, diction and tone and changes in his writing style before and after separating from his parents. What do you guys think about it? Any advice and suggestions are very, very welcomed!

Hi everyone, I am currently studying in Year 11 and I will need to make my subject choices soon. I really like the IB course but I have been worrying over English (which I am going to choose SL for sure). English is not my native language so currently I am struggling to get an A* for my upcoming English GCSE. So I was wondering, if English SL is hard for non-native speakers? Also, I am more of a quiet person, so would it prevent me from doing well? Some advice will be much appreciated. Thanks!
