WL Ibsen's plays World Lit topic - Analysis of Marxist Predictions of Major Character Relationships

Let me preface this by saying I'm not the best at english and really chose a WL topic right on the deadline and wrote the paper in a weekend last year. Now it's down to the wire where we have to submit these sometime before winter break, and it's too late to start from scratch. Is this really a feasible topic? I found about 2 good sources to draw from but I personally think my analysis is... lacking. Has anyone gone into this subject before? My thesis basically says "Marxist social behaviors can be used to predict character relationships in the play "A Doll's House"." Also - how close do you have to get to the word count before you can be safe from getting points taken o…

I'm meant to be writing my WIT essay on my chosen text which is Miss Julie by August Strindberg, originally written in Swedish. The idea I want to discuss is how Strindberg uses his play to explore dependence between the characters, on the levels of both gender and class and as a representation of humanity as a whole. Unfortunately, I have no idea how to go about doing this, how I should structure my essay - should it be chronologically structured or should I do it thematically? HELP!!

So, I need to think of a world literature topic that needs to be REALLY specific according to my teacher. It cannot be something very general like "How the death of Santiago Nasar affected the townspeople(before and after his death)." This was disapproved by my teacher saying it was just a plot summary and I needed a thesis. In grade 10 where I had a teacher that rarely made us work, has lowered my level to write. So I'm not quite sure how to do this, (we didn't really write anything this year either). What I was thinking for a topic for my World Lit paper would be either these 3: -Revenge as a proper and improper action -Emotions of Santiago Nasar during his murder -The…

so I have my first IOP coming up real soon and our class has done three books this semester - Anne Frank, Letters Between Father and a Son, Angela's Ashes. I chose Angela's Ashes and my topic was "alcoholism vs. fatherhood" which I was soooo very excited about but then my teacher informed me that another guy had already chosen the very same topic so now I have to choose another topic and I am racking my brain but I can't come up with a good topic which I could speak well on. There is - poverty, religion and Angela's spirit/endurance from Angela's Ashes and Determination (or hope) from Anne Frank but I'm not particularly interested in them. Please help me come up with idea…

I have a quick question. If I am doing a written task 2 with a prescribed question that says "How could the text be red and interpreted differently by two different readers?" what criteria should I exactly hit in my two paragraphs representing the different interpretations. Is there a correct format? Obviously intro, 1st interpretation, 2nd, maybe 3rd, conclusion, but how should those middle two or three paragraphs be set up? I am doing my WT2 on the poem "Mending Wall" by Robert Frost and my lens' of interpretation are rationalism the type of reader who would agree with the speaker and traditionalism the type of reader who would agree with the neighbor. (The neighbor an…

hey, i posted a similar topic before but i'm doing it specifically on P1 now because i just went through the guide again. for the previous syllabus, they had to write commentaries, whereas we now have to write a literary analysis.: http://ibpublishing.ibo.org/live-exist/rest/app/flat-tsm.xql?doc=d_1_a1lan_tsm_1105_1a_e so i wanted to know the difference between a literary analysis and a commentary. and if someone has examples that would be even better. even if the analyses were your own, it'd be helpful. i found this but i'd apprectiate comparing more: http://ibpublishing.ibo.org/live-exist/rest/app/tsm.xql?doc=d_1_a1lan_tsm_1105_1a_e&part=2&chapter=4 i found thi…

I was thinking of doing my presentation on Miep Gies, who saved Anne's diary and was also one of the helpers of the annexture inmates. Is the topic fine or should it be more specific to the events covered in the text? Also suggest some interesting ways for presentation.. And also tell me the topics which you guys are preparing? Respond ASAP.. Thanks a lot!

So I've got my IOP coming up and have decided to talk about the "Literary texts within the text" of 'V for vendetta'. I was wondering if anyone could give me any tips about my topic and about the IOP in general so that I'll be able to get pretty decent/good marks. What should I avoid? Things like that. Thanks

Hi. I am doing IB in Poland with Polish A1 HL and have exams in May 2015 (so I'm still in the first grade). Recently our teacher told us to write an "interpretation commentary" based on one text. I don't really know how it would be called in English. I've read the subject outline but it didn't help. I found only information about an essay, literary commentary (this must be it but I'm still not sure), guided literary analysis and written assigment. And this is already for exams, not a homework. Does anybody know what "interpretation commentary" stands for? We talked like about what happens in the text, where it is and how the author uses language, what is the narration typ…

So i'm making my presentation on The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde and I need some ideas on what to focus on. I was thinking about doing the psycologic analysis of the characters but i've been told I can also link the dissociative identity or split personality shown in the book to some real events that happen with actual people. The thing is I need some good ideas and if you could help me with some I will appreciate it very much thanks guys

The book that I was assigned for my IOP was The Handmaid's Tale. I've decided to use the topic "how language is used as a means of control" for this. Is there anything in particular I should include in my presentation (quotes, ideas, etc)? I'm not allowed to go too far in depth about how it relates to anything Biblical since two of my classmates are doing IOPs on certain topics on how it relates to the Bible. I'm pretty confident on the actual presentation part of it, I just want to make sure that I enough relevant content and analysis in my IOP.

Hey guys, I need to write my written task. However, I just can't seem to make a decision on what text type to write. I have decided to write about language and power, specifically about the First Nations in Canada. My teacher says we have to first of all, find an example of our chosen text type. I originally want to do a blog, but I can't find any blogs that talk about the First Nations. I also wanted to do a letter from a perspective of a First Nation survivor demanding apology from Canada's federal government for their sufferings, but I'm not sure about that. I could always do a magazine article or newspaper editorial, but it has to be 1000 words. I still don't know wha…

Hey Guys Our school is on holiday and there is no teacher I can ask, and I'd really need some examples or aspects for a reflective statement for my WA. I have to answer this question through my reflective statement: How was your understanding of cultural and contextual considerations of the work developed through your journal writing? I already finished my journal, but I dont have any idea what can I use in the "cultural and contextual consideration" part. Any help would be appreciated.

How does one find the meaning of a poem in a commentary? Although poetry can be interpreted in different ways, we're meant to be able to find a deeper meaning of the poem on which we write our thesis and base our analysis on this meaning and how the way in which the poem is written supports our interpretation. However, I find myself incapable of finding this dreaded meaning so what I do is I write a poor, general thesis and basically write out everything I notice in the poem and hope that it'll all connect. This always leads to a poor introduction and conclusion, as well as a poor mark in organisation. Can some one help me with this? Thank you!

Hey guys, I'm doing my Written Assignment on Bulgakov's Master and Margarita. More specifically, it deals with what the role of Woland's retinue is in the story. What I have is that they basically speed events up = they even act instead of Woland and they are the real main characters. Could you bounce some more ideas off me, please? Thanks!

Hello everybody, I am starting to write my WL essay right now (and have to finish it soon, unfortunately!) and what interests me is redemption of Pontius Pilate. However, I'm not sure about how to narrow down my topic - so that it ensures I score the highest marks, which I am determined to achieve What do you think about these: 1. What literary device does Michail Bulgakov use in his novel "Master and Margarita" to arouse sympathy for Pontius Pilate in the reader? (As opposed to the biblical Pontius.) My arguments would be getting to know emotional state of the procurator (his headache, solitude, being in hostile city - appropriately developed), trying to save Yeshua, ki…

Hi, so I seriously need some help with my language and literature paper 1. I've done a lot of Paper 1s, but I just don't get where I go wrong sometimes. I was a grade 5 student (Paper 1 grade) and then jumped to a grade 6, but I'm really reaching for a 7 (in paper 1). My teacher does give feedback but it seems like she's saying the same thing every time, and I still don't have a full idea of how she thinks I've improved. I'm really confused because I think I write as much as I can, but my teacher says that I still have room to improve, and while I do agree, I honestly don't know how. So I was wondering whether anybody was willing to read through my paper and let me know w…

I'll be taking the IB Diploma next year, and I honestly have no clue on what to expect for English Lit at HL. We're currently studying a few books in IB English HL and our teacher often assigns us a small part of The Crucible to analyse at home. We weren't really given example essays to look at or taught these skills. It was just assumed that we should know, and we share our answers in class sometimes. I feel that this learning method isn't benefiting me and I'm not improving at all, I learn better by example. Does anyone know where I could get good literature text analysis? I'm also open to other suggestions that can help me improve, thanks in advance!!

After careful deliberation, I have decided to do my Written Task Type 2 on Power and Privilege. My question is: How and Why are the Europeans/Caucasians represented in a particular way in Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart? I have encountered a problem while structuring it though and i know organisation is important since it is one of the criteria. I know that the Outline has to be written after I finish the whole Written Task. Is the Outline like an introduction or should I separate the two? Is there a specific suitable way to organize the Written Task? Any Suggestions would be welcome! Thanks in advance

Hello, this is my first time at this forum! I am from Uruguay and English isn´t my native language but I go to a bilingual school so it isn´t so difficult for me to communicate. I am taking Language and Literature HL The problem is that this week I have to give my first draft of the Written Task 2 about Part 1 and Part 2 of the syllabus (This year we did Task 1 about Part 3 and 4) Do you think that I can take a speech from George W. Hello guys! I am currently having English A1 and Norwegian A1 in both higher level, but I think that would be too much for me (Well, we are talking about the IB). I am considering on either having English SL or Norwegian SL. If I have Norwegian HL, that would be an advantage since I speak Norwegian fluently. But I personally think English HL would give me some sort of "credit" when applying for universities. I want to study either medicine, odontology, (bio)engineering or law. I really need some advice, tips or whatsoever! Thanks

Hey, Over the summer we've been asked to complete a first draft of our World Literature essay but I am still unsure on several things regarding how to do the essay, and I was wondering if anybody could help 1) Are we expected to use and cite secondary sources in our essay? Or is it ok to just use quotes from the text? 2) In terms of the question, I understand that it has to be narrow, but if you are going to be talking about characters in the book, how many would be the right amount to talk about? The text I have chosen is Chronicle of a Death Foretold by Gabriel García Márquez and my original idea for my question was 'To what does Márquez use the characters of the text …

Hey all! So, I wrote the rough draft of my written assignment last year in IB English HL Grade 11. The work I chose was "A Doll House" by Ibsen and my title is "Striving for perfection: an Adlerian psychoanalysis of Torvald Helmer in Ibsen's 'A Doll House'." My english teacher last year said it was acceptable, but after re-reading it numerous times this summer, I'm afraid that it does not satisfy the requirements for the WA. It's extremely psychological in scope, and I was wondering how I could fix that. Is my title (as-is) acceptable, or should I alter it? Thank you!

Hello, I'm starting IB2 and I was wondering if anyone who took the french self-taught exam the previous years could share what they thought of it. It would be very helpful to know what level of french is considered "appropriate language skills" because I'm worried that it might be too difficult for me.

Hi, since I just moved to Poland and didn't have a choice but choosing Polish as my A1 language, I wanted to ask how much effort does it require for a native speaker to get a 7. Even though I won't be aiming for 7s once I start my course (I suck at Polish and it will take a lot of time for me to get better, and start getting decent grades), I am curious of how difficult this course can be! Hello fellow IBers, So recently I have noticed how whenever we have to write a commentary over whatever it is.... I always crave some form of criticism before my paper is due. So my question out to all of you would be, If anyone would be interested in forming a Commentary/writing group, where we simply upload our commentaries reflections etc... and other people read them, for grammatical errors, and just a new perspective. Assuming this is allowed by IB would anyone be open to doing this? Just for extra help? I would really appreciate that... Miccol.

Hi so I really need help. I'm nearing the end (started in August, ending in March) of my first year of IB and my English teacher hasn't really done anything in the past few months. We had a project at the start of the year to do with English-speaking countries and their cultures. She comes into every class, writes some stuff on the board, and then literally just stares at us. She gave us some analyzing questions for the exams, and I just used whatever I learnt in IGCSE, but all I'm getting is 4s. She taught me IGCSE First L…
