Hello all, I have found a video where the topic I'm writing my WT1 about is discussed. However, through my WT I want to challenge this view point and I was wondering what the best text type would be? If it would have been a news article I would have used a letter to the editor, but since it is a video I'm not entirely sure of the appropriate text type. Any advice is appreciated!

Pride and Prejudice Setting

Hey guys So for english we were assigned pride and prejudice and I actually thought it was a pretty great book. I bet most of you have watched the movie already and maybe have not read the book, but I still recommend it Anyways We had a question of how the setting of the novel affected the events. I really wasn't such a fan of the setting of the book at all. I'm not into very much of how they talk and all that, but I do love the plot. I do however think that the setting had great impact on the novel because of all the traditions they had Just wondering what you guys thought if you have read or watched the movie.

Hi guys, For the English written task, is it ok if I write it in the persona/voice of someone else? I want to write my task in the voice of a Scottish journalist, yet I'm American, I don't have British heritage, and I'm obviously still a student. Will I be marked down for not speaking as my my true self? Thanks.

So I decided to write my commentary on "A Doll's House" by Henrik Ibsen, though I'm quite unsure what topic to chose. I've narrowed it down to something along the lines of "Ibsen's use of a modern tragedy as a way of criticising women's roles in society." (ya idk) where i'd discuss how Ibsen used realism (while listing examples ofc) to create a modern tragedy that was meant to provide a social critique of women's roles in society. GOOD ENUFF? help please edit: i was thinking of "Ibsen's use of realism as a tool for social critique". Please i need help with the phrasing

During last week, I had been preparing for my Norwegian A HL IOP for quite a while - building up a massive ego and self-esteem over a weeks period to prepare myself to present. My goal was a 6 or a 7, something I am fully capable of doing. On Monday I felt like a star - my mood was perfect, I was serious, focused, clear-minded, and everything was perfect. I got a ****load of homeworks (my IOP was the day after), but I handled it pretty nicely. I am a quite spontaneous person, and I have always been able to present things nicely without the use of a manuscript. I usually never have any problems with anxiety or stress during presentations. However! On Tuesday morning I wak…

Hi! I just need some feedback and help with my written assignment topic on 'Chronicle of a Death Foretold' by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. So what do you think of my WA topic: 'How is magical realism used in the novel and what is its significance?' Should I narrow it down to: 'How does Marquez's use of magical realism in the novel affect its narrative?' Even if you haven't read the novel, can anyone suggest what are some other impacts of the use of magical realism; what are some of its purposes? Also, are there any must-mention things that I should include in my essay? Thanks heaps in advance.

Hi there, I am half considering The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison for both IOP and EE. EE is a comparison with another work on the theme of race and appearances. However, for IOP, it's a comparison with another work (not the one in EE, a third book) about the theme of femininity. Is this valid? According to IB Guides, we can use work related to our syllabus in class for EE, but has to demonstrated wider reading (I compared with a not-in-syllabus book). According to the guide too, we cannot use the same topic for IAs and the EE. However, my topics are not the same, only one of the books is the same. Like EE: BookA and The Bluest Eye (race and appearance) And IOP: BookB an…

Hello! I was wondering if someone could help me with my written assignment topic. I've worked out with the whole essay in The Inhabited Woman by Gioconda Belli. For those of you who don't know about it, it's a story in a dual point of view with magic realism. In my essay, i've worked around the character of Itza (an indigenous spirit who brings out magic realism and inhabits Lavinia's body.) However, I have no idea as to how I could frame my question. Are there any tips or anything? Please help soon! I really need to do this. Thank you so much!

Ok, so for my Written Assignment I have chosen the book 'If This is a Man' by Primo Levi. Moreover, I was wondering if my topic is appropriate/specific enough. My topic, which I can't bring myself to actually come up with a good title yet, goes something along the lines of: The use of Antonio, Lorenzo and Jean (three of the most important characters) in providing the reader with a better understanding of 'life' inside the camp (Auschwitz concentration camp, for those who have not read this memoir). I would appreciate any feedback Thank You

I dont what I want to study at University, but not something Language related. Rather something math, science, or economics realted (which are very likely going to be my HLs, Physics for the science and also Chemistry SL)

I've just finished year 1 of IB. Everything has been going great, except for one little thing... My HL English teacher has never taught IB before, and I literally haven't learned a SINGLE thing from him this entire year! what about self-taught languages? the way I understand it, it's not an actual class, right? you just read books from the list in your spare time and then write eassys/get tested on it. so if I take that as an extra course it's not gonna be that much of additional work? also I don't know what language should I choose, if I do it. My native language is Ukrainian, but I also I speak Russian perfectly (it's very similar to Ukrainian). I read books in Russian and a lot of stuff on the internet, but I'm pretty bad in spelling. Still I think it's useful to know it. So should I do it? And if yes, which one? and again thanks for being so helpful

so i have my iop presentation the day i get back to school after break, which is still in a while, but i do want to get it out of the way as soon as possible. i've chosen to do a comparison between The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald and The Stranger by Albert Camus. the thing is, i don't really know what i'm doing... my plan is to do something along the lines of a comparison between gatsby and meursault; their driving forces and their outlook on life - how gatsby is driven by love, while meursault couldnt be any less indiffferent to situations. i understand this is very vague, so i'm hoping that someone can give me some ideas or some tips that i could use just to get…

Can anyone give me some tips to comment on plays? For example, how is it different from commenting on a novel? I don't really know what direction I'm supposed to head in when I comment on plays. For example my teacher said a question that could come up in our IOD would be: Why does Shakespeare limit the setting to Denmark? And for the last question, in the context of the content of the play I would've answered that "Elsinore was Hamlet's prison.... blahblahblah" but then someone brought up that given the time the play was written, it would have been difficult to put on the production if it was all in one location I would have never thought of that.

Hey, So we did our IOPs for English early on in our first year of IB (not really sure why, we were still clueless ib-lets then) and despite consistently getting 6s and 7s throughout the year I got a 5 for my IOP, which i was pretty disappointed with.I was just wondering, would there be any chance of me getting a 7 for my final grade? I'd love to get at least one 7 in IB and seeing as I've been pretty close in the last I'd love to get one for English. My teacher told me I'd be very happy with my IOC and world lit scores so I'm assuming I would have gotten 6s or 7s for those, and I do pretty well with essay writing and commentaries so I'm feeling pretty confident for the ex…

Hey guys, I'm interested in these two short poems: Edge and Morning Song by Sylvia Plath. Morning Song is about the birth of her child, while Edge is her last poem about death. In MS, she is uncertain about the birth and motherhood, while in Edge, she sounds absolutely sure about death. I would like to compare/contrast these two poems, anyone has any insight into them? What could I possibly use to contrast them to the themes of birth and death? I'm a little lost now. Any help with examples to even form an actual title for my IOP would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hello! I'm doing my Written Task 2 on media analysis. I just had a quick question. Am I allowed to base it on two similar adverts, or must I base it on one? What are the restrictions? Also, apparently this advert was a parody. If I mention that and go into detail about why someone would make a parody of it, would this advert be usable? Thank you everyone in advance, hope you had a merry Christmas and a happy holiday!

Hey guys, I'm really starting to worry about my English HL Paper 1 exam. Looking back at some past papers I thought that we will be given one chose out of two passages to write the essay on. But after talking to some people and looking through some other websites, I realized that it might actually be picking a pair out of two pairs of literary texts to compare and contrast. Which one is it? This is super urgent I'd really appreciate an answer ASAP. Thanks

Hey Everyone, This thread might be off topic, but, IB requires you to write a lot in every subject, and that's exactly what my weakness is. I struggle a lot when writing essays; writing anything more than 250 words become a pain. I know that is horrible, so I really want to improve. I still have 2-6 months left before I begin my IB year 1 (depending on which school I go to) and I really want to use this time to become better at writing. How do you guys/gals write the essays in IB? Any tips? Please help me out, Aniruddh
