I need some help figuring out how to do this Math IA on Population Growth of Bees. It requires the use of technology, and wants you to create a function of the data. Math isn't really my strong suite so help would be lovely. If anyone has done this problem please let me know!

So i've figured out the first question when r= 1 but I cant figure out what to do when OP =2 and R =2 because what i've discovered states that it would be an equilateral triangle, but then i cannot solve for OP'. Can someone help me??

For the portfolio about the medalists jumping height at the olympic games, they ask for 2 function by hand, and one by technology. I am confused about what they mean by hand, can i plot the points on excel or GDC, can i used my GDC to solve system of equations with it? what can't I do when it says find the function by hand?

I have been assigned stellar numbers portfolio for this year, which is due in two-three weeks. I have been working on it for a while, and I have figure most of it out. The only thing I'm stumped on is the star numbers formula relating to terms of n. I have got the formula which works but I have no idea what to do to get the formula. Any help given would be appreciated.

Hello Everyone, I have recently downloaded an ipad application called IB-MathSL and found it very helpful. It is basically made up of questions that you answer and a full answer is provided with tips and explanations. The application is structured in the same way as the guide, so you will not be lost.

If you are given a downfacing parabola with its vertex on the y axis, such as y= 4-x^2, and also given a line such as y=x+2, what is the maximum area of a rectangle that can be formed between the 2 equations and the x axis?

Hello, I am in Y12, and we have just completed Sequences& Series, Logs and Binomial Expansion. I am having a very hard time understanding the concepts without a tutor. When I am in class, I literally understand the first 5 minutes and then anything he writes on the board might as well be alien language. Everytime my tutor comes, anything he explains I understand very well, and I understand for ever. The thing is, as soon as he is gone , I am unable to understand things on my own, no matter what I do I don't understand. I am wondering if I am the only one experiencing this problem, or am I not alone? Thanks!

Hi people! Ok, so i have never done an internal assessment for a math class even though i've been in two IB math classes. I would have done one last year for IB Precalc, but I only took one semester....it's a long story behind that. Anyways, i got that IA with the circles where you have to find the length of side OP'. I've already solved the first bullet where its asking to change the value of side OP. But on the second bullet, I got a little confused when r=4 but i'll just leave my answer alone on that one. I don't know how i'm supposed to write up this paper at ALL! I don't know a layout, i don't have any examples, i don't have an outline of what it could look like..Not…

My teacher gave us the opportunity to do another portfolio if one of ours turns out really bad. but we don't even get a full week to do it so I was wondering if i could work a bit ahead. my question is whether if I have my exams in 2012, is it only possible to do the 2011/2012 portfolios (G-froce, China population trends, stellar numbers and that other one) or also the ones that were issued this year? Thanks a lot!!!!

Hi, I will enroll in the IB program in september and i chose SL Math in group 5. I would like to study over the summer so I know what I'm headed into for my grade 11 year. Can someone please post some notes or websites that might include an overview of the topics we will learn in grade 11 SL math? It would be helpful if these topics were specific and not very broad. For example, pre-calculus: what specifics would i need to know about pre-calculus? thanks so much!

Ok so for the past hour, I've been browsing the forums trying to figure out what exactly is meant by "discuss[ing] any parameters/constraints." A simple question. I've reached three possible conclusions: 1. Parameters are numerical as in the constants related to a specific graph (e.g. the 'a,' 'b,' and 'c' of a quadratic function y = ax^2 + bx + c) 2. Parameters are the limits placed on the data (e.g. years cannot be negative). or, the likeliest one; 3. Parameters/constraints are the actual physical limitations of the investigation. So if it were on Fish Production (which is what my investigation is on) it would be along the lines of ... (actually I'm still not sure). Any…

I found the following systems of equations online to find the equation of a parabola by using any 3 points: http://www.vb-helper.com/howto_find_quadratic_curve.html I used it in my portfolio (the lacsap's fractions one) to find the general statement of the numerator. It worked. I don't like their terminology (example, the use of "plugging in") and I find it's very unclear at times what they are doing. What exactly did they "plug in" so to speak to get the values of b and c.

For my Type II portfolio for Math SL, I'm given an equation and through my own research I found it its origin online. The problem is the origin starts as a differential equation that can then be integrated to find the equation given by the IA. Because I'm only in Math SL, I barely know anything about diff. equations or integration, which my teacher is aware of, but I think including all of this would help me get that "wow factor". Should I include it or not? Thanks!

Does anyone know which SL Maths books has a lot of exercises on the 7 topics in the syllabus? The one that I currently have is the Haese and Harris Textbook - how does it fare in comparison with the other textbooks out there like the Pearson Baccalaureate text? Any exam prep book recommendations are welcomed too.

I used to be a pretty good math student, but ever since we started calculus I've been doing terrible!! Last test I barely got over passed, but since everyone in the class did bad my teacher gave us a retest. I think I may have done just as bad on the retest though. I feel like I make sure I understand all of the notes the teacher gives us, and that I make sure I understand how the concepts work, and I usually do most or all of my homework (except sometimes she'll give us a bunch of review booklets the class before the test but then tell us they are not that useful, so I don't bother doing them because it might just be a waste of time). I have the Cambridge book, but I fin…

Hey I am currently workıng on my Type 2 Maths SL IA and was wondering if I could write it out by hand as the task of writing long equations which contain logs and sin's will be very tedious, also i can show more working if i write it out by hand? All my graphs will be generated by a computer programme, and the GDC has been used, so I was wondering if I could be counted down by not using enough technology? Any help would be appreciated, thank you

OK, so I am starting my first math portfolio that I have ever done. (Only in grade 10 Pre-IB) My teacher has told us nothing on what is expected for the format of the essay or what exactly it is that we are doing! Practically, I'm having difficulty figuring out where to start. My topic is Matrix Powers (Type 1) and though I understand the questions and have found some patterns, I don't know how to go about writing this dang thing. I mean, in the introduction what am I supposed to talk about? Is there going to be paragraphs for each of the three forumlas? For that matter, do I have to connect the formulas to one another? Like reference them.... If you couldn't tell, I am l…

Hello, i was just wondering to all those who finised the course and secured a solid score. What did you find the hardest topics during the 2 year MATHS SL course?? We finished 2 quizes so far, algebra and circular functions and trig.. I left a whole page empty in the 2nd test and feel really bad....as i was told its one of the easiest topics.. and i feel it will demotivate me to get a higher mark in future tests.. How do you get a 7 in Maths SL? A 6? Lots of people end up with 5's.

Hi, I just started year 1 IB in Standard Level mathematics. I've never thought of myself as good at math and have typically gotten mid to high 70s in previous high-school math courses (Pre-IB). I was wondering: if I want to go into a career in humanities (most likely history or english) will universities in Canada frown upon a 3 or 4 in math SL if I have good grades in all my other subjects? My friend says they won't care what I got in Math if I'm not applying for math or science. I hate functions and find myself unreasonably stressed out because of mathematics. Any advice would be much appreciated. Also, in IB do we still apply with our top 6 grades? Here are all my curr…

Ok so. Im in my first year of the IB diploma program. This grade, I am taking : Chem HL, Math SL, Eng HL, French SL, Bio SL, Philosophy/or tok im not sure which one? In grade 11, the only IB exams that I will be taking in May is for math and french (rest in grade 12). But I don't understand the marking scheme at all.... Like, for example, in math, everyone is saying that the term work (quizes, tests) do not really affect the overall IB grade out of 7 at all???.. So basically, if you are good at math, you can fool around the whole year, and just get like a perfect on the IB exam, and the portfolios and you'll still get a 7? What my course information sheet says for math is…

Hi, I am having trouble with this question: The graph shows a normal curve for the random variable X, with mean μ and standard deviation . It is known that p(X 12) = 0.1. (a) The shaded region A is the region under the curve where x 12. Write down the area of the shaded region A. It is also known that p(X 8) = 0.1. (b) Find the value of μ, explaining your method in full. © Show that = 1.56 to an accuracy of three significant figures. (d) Find p(X 11). I actually have no idea how to solve this problem from point c). I would be glad if someone could explain!! x is greater than equal than 12 and smaller than equal than 8* 1.56 = standard deviation* …
