Hey guys, I really have a problem with this math/physics exercise. When dropped, a ball takes 1 second to hit the ground. It then takes 90% of this time to rebound to its new height, and this continues until the ball comes to rest. the total time of motion is: 1+2(0.9)+2(0.9)^2+2(0.9)^3+... A) What is the Sn for the series? B) How long does it take for the ball to come to rest? Help would be very much appreciated. Tnx.

Hi, Im currently in my second week of doing SL maths and I'm finding it hard already. I got 74% in my maths GCSE but i think in reality I'm actually a bit worse than that suggests. I feel now is the time for me to drop down if ever but I'm just wondering how hard SL gets? I dont particularly want to do maths at Uni or anything but at the same time I'm not keen to limit myself by dropping it. Any advice is appreciated, thanks.

Hey everyone..... so here's the deal. I am SO STUMPED on picking a topic and developing a research question for my math sl exploration. I was thinking something along the lines of the Fibonacci sequence/golden ratio idea... but the math is really limited. All in all... I am really confused. Once I have a solid idea of what to do I think I will be good but finding a topic is really hard for me!! help?!

hi I have this practice question and needed help with the answers: Alan has 2 squash partners, Steve and Connor. If he plays steve he has 30% of a chance of winning. If he plays connor he has 50% of a chance of winning. He plays steve 20% of the time and connor the rest. what's the probability of Alan winning a match? given that Alan doesn't win, what is the probability that he was playing Connor? answers to 3 d.p. Thanks

Hi, I've just finished my first year of IB and i'm finding most of the subjects i'm taking okay, but maths SL is a real struggle for me. I understand the concepts when they are taught in class, but find the leap from the questions we do in class to the questions in the exams HUGE. I've talked to my teacher but she doesn't seem to think she can do anything else for me other then teach me what she has. Has anyone else found that there is a huge leap between the questions in the exercise books and the ones in the exam? Also mainly does anyone have any suggestions on books that I can get that have more involved questions that can perhaps prepare me better for the exams? Thank…

Hi there! I'm almost done with my math SL IA and the topic is "The presence of the golden ratio in our everyday lives". What I basically did was show how the golden ratio can be found in various structures (human hand, DNA helix, ID card, aspect ratio etc) and I'm stuck at the conclusion. Our teacher didn't really gave us instructions but he was more like "yeah, that's a good topic and idea, go ahead". Can anyone please suggest what I should put in my conlusion? Every bit of help is much appreciated!

Hey guys, So I have to do my Math IA for SL this year and I don't know whether this is good or not First I was just going to do one on olympic sports and breaking records but my teacher said it wasn't that great since so many people do it So I wanted to do something totally different and what came to mind was the dragon curve If you don't know what it is it's this pretty thing But i dont know what to do Can my Ia just be like exploring the mathematical properties of the dragon curve? Or does it have to be some sort of question ? :/ thanks a bunch

Hello! My school is only in it's second year of IB and I'm supposed to write a Maths SL IA over the summer, but my teacher didn't relly explain the process very well. I know that the paper is supposed to show my mastery of a level of math that is appropriate to Maths SL, but I'm not sure what the premise of the paper is? Am I supposed to form an argument? Can I use outside research? Am I supposed to form a hypothesis and test it using maths? Can someone give me a breakdown of the expectations of a Maths SL IA from the ground up? I'm really confused. Thank you in advance!

Hi all, I've hit a brick wall with my SL Math's exploration - the type of thing that annoys the heck out of me because I'm not sure where to turn to and my school hasn't started yet. I chose to investigate the probability of experiencing a rolling blackout in Jakarta, Indonesia in any of the 5 given city provinces (venn diagrams). I also try and hypothesize why this may be the case by postulating a relationship between more probable areas with province population size. Could I be doing more with this topic, in terms of more ways to interpret/analyze with probability or statistics? My math teacher moved schools and I don't know who my new teacher will be, so I really hav…

So as you all know we need to come up with our own topic for the Math IA. I have been giving it some thought and I sort of came up with a topic. I was thinking of the distribution of color in M&Ms related to the distribution of color in Skittles? Does this sound like a good topic? Do you think I could write a whole IA based on this idea? Another idea I had was if the color of M&Ms is related to the weight of individual M&Ms. I know I cannot ask for topic suggestions but I would appreciate it if someone helped by saying if this could work and how could I approach this investigation.

Hello everyone I'm currently doing research for my SL exploration but I'm stuck. I'm not asking for topic suggestions, I understand that's my responsibility. I realized that I'm interested in "Four Color Theorem" but I don't quite know how I'm supposed to explore the problem here. I don't think I can proove it! Even real mathematicians did that with the help of computers. I know the topic very well, it's very simple. I just don't see how I can demonstrate my mathematics skills (my skillset isn't broad) without getting in over my head - if you know what I mean. Is simply explaining the issue and showing what other people (ie - mathematicians) have done on it while reflecti…

Ok so I received the portfolio gold medal heights it's due to 10 days from today. It is actually all the heights(cm) achieved by the gold medalists of high jump from 1932 to 1980. I have to define all variables and sketch them on a graph. Now here comes the hard part - 1940 and 1944 no olympic games were held. 1)Should I include those 2 on the graph or no? 2) They ask me to define all variables but I have no clue about what variables they are speaking about? 3) The function(using a trend line) of the graph seems a bit hard to choose. Should I be leaded by the value of R squared( correletion coefficient)? I mean the closer the function is to one - pick that function! I a…

I started this topic because I think someone could give me an answer faster than if I post in the other Circles topic I did find the OP' values when OP is held as a constant and r values are modified, also I found the pattern using excel, BUT my teacher told i had to find the pattern by finding a sequence in those three values. I just know about geometric and aritmetic sequences, but the values i found doesn't follow the rules of a geometric nor aritmetic sequence Thanks for your help!

Hello everyone, My math teacher gave me 3 weeks to come out with a topic for my math IA. Basically I have one in my mind but I don't know exactly how to bring the mathematical link in it. My plan is to incubate a set of 10 eggs and to find the success rate. For incubation both temperature and humidity is involved. Here the temperature is the controlled variable and the humidity is the dependent variable. My aim is to find at which temperature will the hatching will be maximized. For that I am going to conduct a series of 3 experiments involving 3 different temperatures. I thought of plotting Temperature vs humidity graph, but I am not too sure about that. Is there any ot…

Hi everyone, Sooo - I need to have a math IA topic within about the next week. I tried a little to find a topic during the summer, but honestly it didn't take much to make me give up. Math is really not my thing, I have to work really hard to understand what we're doing. This was one of my ideas - but I need feedback. Is it at all suitable? Gapminder.org is a statistics site that we use a lot in Geography, for example to see the relationship between a variable such as infant mortality, and the wealth/health of a nation, which we would then use to determine how 'developed' a country is. The main advantage of the site is that it shows you how trends change over time - you c…

hey guys I am doing my IA on human body ratios such as wingspan to height and the ratio of length of the forearm and hand to forearm ( I was thinking of using golden ratio 1.1618 for the forearm one.). I already collected data and my teacher told me I can do mine on both probability and statistics, but I'm not sure what to do with it. So do you guys have any ideas for it? I already have graphs and standard deviation and average and medians and stuff, but is there a way for me to make a hypothesis and to prove it in a mathematical way? and also do you think i should focus more on the golden ratio Thanks!

I am working on my exploratiion and am absolutely stuck after solving for n=2 through geometric probability, any ideas on solving either questions? a) If n people go to place X and wait for 30 min each, in the span of 24 hours (one day – from midnight to midnight), what’s the probability that any two shall meet? b) If n people go to place X and wait for 30 min each, in the span of 24 hours (one day – from midnight to midnight), what’s the probability that n shall meet each other?

Hi I just started to plan my Maths Exploration and realized, that I have no guide or whatever to help me write it. For example, there is an Extended Essay Guide telling you what exactly you have to include (e.g. abstract), in what sequence, etc. Does anyone know if such a guide exists for Maths? Or is there any other way to get to such information?

Hello everyone! I'm currently trying to write my Maths exploration, and I'm having some trouble with the structure. I understand that, as with most pieces of writing, it should have an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. In the introduction the aim and the rationale should be included. It would be very helpful if someone could give me a detailed explanation of how to structure this piece of work. Thank you in advance!

Hi guys so I thought I'd start working on my maths exploration. I was given a couple of sample papers to gain inspiration for my own project but I've been thinking now (on and off) for about a week and I haven't been able to get a proper subject to write about. Ideally I want the exploration to be based on Calculus as it's my strongest section of Maths SL, but definitely not on Probability or Vectors (especially not vectors!!!). I was wondering if you guys could help me out a bit, because it's getting quite frustrating, not being able to find a proper and suitable topic to explore and hopefully solve. Cheers Guys

Hi, I'm writing the SL Math exam (as many of you probably are) on May 3rd and 4th. My question is - how important is this math mark for university? I'm a particularly weak math student, but my IA marks have been overall decent (level 5). I want a 6 or 7, but I'm never too confident despite studying. Do universities still accept students who don't have an amazing math mark? Like a 4 or 5, for example. Also, for people who have done the SL Math exam in previous years, how hard was it? Thanks!

Since I don't have a life right now, I decided to work on my exploration and to research. And I came up with the idea of using graph theory to make the quickest route to travel 13 chosen countries that I plan to visit in Winter holidays and to use graph theory to make an exam schedule that requires the least number of days so that we can have our semester exams before the holidays instead of after. BUT the problem, I think, with this is that graph theory isn't even included in our syllabus, it might seem too easy as the actual calculation isn't very hard and that I might not be able to fill in the 10 pages required. What do you guys think? I really wanna include graph…

HI people, i am going to start writing my IA during the summer! However i have problem deciding on a topic, i have two possible ideas. Investigating the gps system, including triangulation and doppler effect. And integrating 3dimensional functions and finding sum to infinity i.e. the volume between the function and the XYZ axes. Is the fact that doppler effect is more physics than math going to penalize me or does it not matter? Please help me choose from these two, thanks in advance!

Hey Everyone! I have just started with IBDP Year II and am part of the first batch of IB students in out school. I am very interested in encryption and ciphers and am thinking about choosing the security of the AES encryption cipher to be the subject of my IA. I will make certain changes and tweaks in the cipher and explore how that affects the security. Is this is good topic to explore? Will it be too difficult to get data? Thanks

Hey, So, I am doing the second SL folio, and for this I have some data. I have to investigate different functions which model the data. I have done about 16 pages and it is all going great, however we were hinted that putting an arctan function could help boost our grade. I would love to do this. But i dont know how to make this graph, as i have done all of my investigation using excel so far, and cannot find how to map one. Is anyone aware of a program (desmos, geogabra) and how to use it so that i may enter my data and it will generate an arctan function to map my data?

I'm not in new. I'm in the second term of the IB and I'm still struggling with Maths. Currently, my summer holidays are on and I'm trying to brush my Maths because it is the only subject I've scored poorly in. I've not got more than a 2. That's horrible. I get 4-6 in other subjects but a 2 in Maths SL which really pulls my score down from say 30-32 to 25-26. This sucks. I've been working on my other subjects and trying to look at my weak points in each but I can't do anything about Maths. Since I joined a little late, my base of functions is very poor. Functions keeps getting complicated with every new chapter and I'm still struggling with the basics. But now, I opened "S…

Today I was just wondering about how the IB marks math exams. So, lets say on a question, you completely mess up the numbers because you read the question wrong, but the steps you did with those numbers are the correct ones. Your end answer is 100% wrong but using your method you get an answer. Does this account for method marks, misread or what? Also, if you do get method marks, are you still able to recieve full marks on a question or just a few? Thanks in advance
