For the last few months I've been volunteering at my daughter's high school to help the 12th graders review for the International Baccalaureate (IB) Maths Standard Level Exam in May 2015. In the process I produced these review notes that I thought could be useful to other students preparing for the exam as well. Review Notes for IB Maths Standard Level I'd be grateful if you email me with any mistakes you find so I can correct them. Best of luck on the upcoming exams.

Hey guys, My draft for mathIA is due in 1 week, and I have the topic but I haven't written anything. The reason is I don't know what to write about. I know I will be writing on the martingale method, and I have written a java script which simulates this method for 1,000,000 rolls of roulette on the American (double 0) roulette board. I can choose the initial bet and how much money I have at the start. Should I just write my IA on debunking the betting method? Or find the optimum starting bet based on the total balance? Or should I make a new betting method and write the code for that and debunk my OWN betting method? which would be better for personal …

Yeo so basically my rough copy for my math IA topic is due soon and i'm so lost, 3 of my proposals got rejected by my teacher LMAO. Like i wanted to relate tennis and math, but I soon realized that woulden't really work, unless I did probabilities and that wont even work that well. Then I TRIED to look at a correlation between injuries and sports or something like that but NOTHING IS WORKINGGG. if yall got any ideas for high scoring IA's, please comment an idea, i'm really desperate.

Hi all! Its an amazing opportunity to be on this forum amongst so many fellow IB students! For my SL maths IA, I have decided to do a statistical analysis on how HDI affects PISA exam scores with the overarching topic being if students in developed countries will do better academically on average. The course content I plan to connect it to is median, standard deviation, mean, pearsons correlation coefficient, correlation, least squares regression line, boxplots, range and percentiles/quartiles, applying it to the statistics unit that we have done. My plan is to take data from 3 different sets of years and do an analysis on each of them and then compare them with eac…

On 9/20/2016 at 10:41 AM, IB Math Helper said: The first order physics that you are talking about is fine by IB examiners (I know because I am one of them). Your concern about focusing on the Mathematical Understanding because it has the highest number of points is unfounded. In fact, in my experience of marking, this is one of the easiest to get marks for. You can double check calculations and explain why you choose certain formulae or made certain assumptions and as long as you know what you're doing, this satisfies the examiner. What's harder to score marks on are the Personal Engagement and Reflection criteria. I find that most students struggle with these cri…

Hi everyone, I need a math IA topic pretty soon and I've been struggling to find something that I both like and can find an appropriate application of math to. I want to go into architecture so I was thinking something about that, but the issue is, most of it is just geometry which I think is too simple for SL Math. The other idea I had was too complicated and there was no research question I could come up for it. It was exploring ideas of parametric architecture like Zaha Hadid uses. Here's a link to some basic 3d parametric modeling I looked at, but again, it seem too complex and I dont know where I would go with it. Any suggestions? Thank You! 3d parametrics

My last topic was too complex for me so I decided to change it to something simpler but I'm having hard time developing my ideas. I'm planning to do my math IA on something about projectile motion and baseball using calculus. My current idea is "what is the most ideal angle for a batter to hit a home run with the least force possible?". I know that I will take air resistance into account, but I may neglect drag force caused by wind as the calculations may be too complex. Also, I'm not sure if I should include the calculation for momentum of ballbat collision or not as it may be too physicslike (besides I'm not sure how to solve for it using calculus method). I wil…

So for my Math SL IA I decided I wanted to investigate what factors affected a nominated movie's chance of winning the Academy Awards Best Picture Award. The factors I picked to investigate are total box office earnings, genre, and release date. I am only using data from nominated movies from 2011 to 2014 so as not to overload myself with data. My problem is, although I have all my data, I don't know what to do with it. My teacher suggested trying to find a regression or make a probability equation. However all of my lists of data only have an x value, so I am unsure how to fit it into a regression. (I tried using '1' in the y value for a movie that won and a '0' for on…

So, I wanted to do my IA on optimization, and so I immediately thought of a soda can, but that is too simple. How can I make this more complex? By maybe optimizing a coke bottle so it's not just optimizing a cylinder? Please help me, and if I were to do this, I'm not sure how... like somehow graphing that and then finding the area under the curve using integration? I'm really not sure and this is due next week and i'm kinda freaking out so pls help me

Hello there, So I've gone and done my IA on probability only to find that my "use of mathematics" part is lacking. Atm my teacher is only willing to give me 13/20 (which is quite low since I'm aiming for a 7). My IA is on Prosecutor's Fallacy and solving that through Bayes' Theorem, and I guess it is rather simplistic because Bayes Theorem is HL (I'm SL) and to delve a lot further into the theorem is too complicated for me. I've just heard that probability IAs are infamous for lacking in Criteria E, which carries a lot of marks. At this point I'm quite sure I don't have the time to change my topic since I've got other IAs to do, so are there any ideas on how I can …

I'm kind of iffy whether or not this topic is doable and will be able to fill up enough content. Does anyone have any advice on this topic or any alternate topics I could do?

In this exploration, I want to see how mathematics is used to "predict" price movements by financial traders. This is very interesting to me as I want a career in Finance. Furthermore, I want to explore particular events such as the fall of the Lehman Brothers etc. and view correlations between stock valuation, output and market volatility. I also aim to find out what sort of correlations there are in particular stocks. I will use technical analysis (stats) on a particular stock index to find these price trends. The majority of the maths required in financial markets & trading is probability, statistics & stochastic calculus. The BlackScholes equation (alth…

Hello! Math has lately been my weakest subject, and sadly, we have an Exploration to write. Our first draft is supposed to be handed in tomorrow. I have already written 67 pages on my IA. However, my topic is "Patterns in Pascal's Triangle", and it just occurred to me that it may be a weak topic... What do you think? I am basically out of ideas, and I think it might be too late to change topic. The Pascal's Triangle was something I just chose to write about because I found it quite interesting when we learned about this, but not something I am very excited about. I would appreciate any answers, ideas, tips... whatever! I just want to finish it, and get a decent …

Hi, I'm not sure if I'll get any replies but I have an idea for my math IA and it's something I am interested in but I'm not sure how to pose a question. I want to find out if there is a perfect BMI for athletic runners and if this score would be an accurate representation for all runners (male and females apart). That is my idea and I think it falls under the statistics side of math but I'm not sure because I wanted my math IA to be on probability but I can't figure out a way to pose the question in terms of probability. Is there any advice anyone could give me? I really just need some type of guidance to lead me to my question and I should be able to do the rest. I woul…

Hey guys, I'm planning on doing my math IA on the golden ratio but the golden ratio on facial structure is done a lot, so my teacher suggested that I do it on a mix of architecture, nature and facial structure. Is this a good idea, or does it make more sense to focus on one of these. Also I read somewhere that the Fibonacci sequence is out of the HL portion too, is it ? and if it is, does it make sense for me to do it anyways ? Also this is my first IA in IB so I'm not really sure how I'm supposed to approach it and my teacher is not being of much help. Do you guys have any ideas or can help in any way ?

I was wondering if the topic "Body Proportions in Anime" could be a suitable topic for my Maths IA, as it relates to both my interests and daily life (art). I would take several anime characters and try to find the perfect ratio or most ideal ratio for body proportions in anime. Is this a good topic and what are some of the mathematical aspects I can incorporate into it?

Hi guys! Hey, so today my teacher has introduced the IA to the whole class. She also said that It could be about anything as long as math relates to it... Long story short, I really need help in deciding on a question but I can't really think of anything. I was really interested in doing it on a MMORPG like world or warcraft or some game of that sort but also was looking at doing it on the game on all android / iphones called "Tap Titan". I've learnt that there are many formulas that are taken into consideration to leveling up the characters, how much damage you do, how much money you earn and the HP of the monsters and bosses and many formulas of that sort. So what kind of ques…

I'm rather confused if its required by the IB, on penalty of losing marks, to always leave answers in 3 significant figures. Different sources tell me otherwise: a mark scheme from the old Maths SL syllabus (pre2014) states that a 1 mark for inaccuracy be applied to the whole paper, once, if there is any instance of inappropriate significant figures in the answer. However, the mark schemes for the current syllabus are very vague regarding this, and I cannot interpret anything whatsoever. My Maths teacher is also rather unsure about the importance of significant figures, whereas DP coordinator says you can leave your answer to 99999 significant figures if you really want…

So I'm trying to come up with a topic for my SL math IA and I'm currently working with the idea of modelling the population decrease of nesting leatherback sea turtles in Las Baulas. I plan on creating an equation to predict the further decrease of the population if humans do not intervene, and possibly seeing what type of graph this population matches. The only issue is I can't decide if it is more of a science IA or a math IA. Any thoughts??

hello there, I'm an ib student from tokyo and I'm currently learning maths sl from the haese mathematics text book "third edition". My school has 8 ib students and we're one of the first to do the ib program in Japan. We all have the text books but the problem we have is that we don't have the solutions book. Hey guys, I have a Math IA due on Sunday December 15, which is about 9 days from now. I want to do my topic on the golden ratio because firstly, I'm genuinely interested in it, and secondly, it's extremely risky to change topics at such a late stage. I know some of you will scold me for procrastinating on it but believe me I've legitimately been working on it. However, I'm having trouble finding an original idea based on the golden ratio. I did an introduction where I introduced it and such but I'm having trouble with how to proceed. Hello everyone, currently I am writing a new math IA and i decided to write it under the topic of Projectile Motion. What what I want to do is take a video of a setter (in volleyball) and him setting the ball up. I'll take that video and create a graph and will derive that function. The thing is, I think that this is a little to vague, and I really don't have a clue on what to really explore within my topic. For the volleyball idea, I wanted to originally see what's the best place to put the ball in the air to get a good hit in for the spiker. If you have any further suggestions on what else I should do with this topic, I am open to any suggestions. Thank you!

Hi, I need to find ideas for my MATH SL IA and want to do Probability. My 2 ideas are either Probability in testing in medicine (false positives). Problem is I don't know what to do with the idea (what math to use) Normal distribution (any topic, just measuring distribution). If you could help me with ideas on any of the two as in what topics to include to get the highest grade I would be thankful. Is it enough to do a Chi squared test, normal distribution graph and use the equation? (for Normal distribution idea) Please I need urgent help and thanks

Hi guys, My name is Aurimas, I'm a part of a student venture tackling education inequality and we're looking for Maths SL students to participate in our program. We have developed a test system that would provide a detailed and visual assessment of your skillset and help you objectively identify gaps in your knowledge. We are looking for students to complete these tests and send us back the solutions, which we would grade for free and provide you with the personalised skillset analysis. I'm attaching here how the skillset document would look like. Let me know if you would be interested or have any questions.

Hello, I am not sure if peerreviewing math ia's are exclusive to my school but upon giving my math ia to another student to "premark" they return it very shortly thereafter saying it was too difficult. I asked three more people to look at it and they said the same thing. Asking two more people shows that my conclusion is truepeople don't understand the mathematics that I am using in my math ia. This is a problem because if the teacher (who is currently absent) does not understand it either I do not have much time to fix it (since the final copy is due quite shortly after the draft is passed back).
