For the last few months I've been volunteering at my daughter's high school to help the 12th graders review for the International Baccalaureate (IB) Maths Standard Level Exam in May 2015. In the process I produced these review notes that I thought could be useful to other students preparing for the exam as well. Review Notes for IB Maths Standard Level I'd be grateful if you email me with any mistakes you find so I can correct them. Best of luck on the upcoming exams.

Hi I need to calculate how long it would take to reestablish the world from its 2020 polluted atmospheric carbon dioxide levels to its state 100 years back. I used a simple formula (CO2 removal rate (bmt/year) = (initial CO2 emissions - final CO2 emissions) / time period (in years) however, my teacher says it is too little math, the IA needs more. I don't know what formula or calculation I can use. Can someone help me please.

We are barely starting our Math IA SL and our teacher told us to come up with something personal. However, I was thinking about doing a probability method in the game go fish to be able to determine and choose the best chances of winning. I'm just kinda stuck how I could work with that since it is the only thing that comes to mind.

I am writing an IA on the math behind RSA encryption, but I am struggling to find topics in the SL curriculum that I can apply to RSA encryption. I was considering using perms and combs/stats and prob but I can't find that much info on either. Any help or pointers would be much appreciated.

Hey guys. I am taking Math AASL. I submitted my first draft and everything. My Math IA is based on finding a correlation (if any) between the average speed of 2 the 2 fastest NFL wide receivers per team, and these teams' win rates. I am evaluating only the 17 teams with the highest win rates. I have tried to find a linear regression, and a polynomial regression. However, the teacher said that its all good, she just hasn't marked me full marks in any of the criteria which is fine if they're all marked at least a 5. She also mentioned that maybe i can fit 1 or two more analysis tools. Does anyone have any suggestions for what else I can use to evaluate these two …

Hey guys, I have a Math IA due on Sunday December 15, which is about 9 days from now. I want to do my topic on the golden ratio because firstly, I'm genuinely interested in it, and secondly, it's extremely risky to change topics at such a late stage. I know some of you will scold me for procrastinating on it but believe me I've legitimately been working on it. However, I'm having trouble finding an original idea based on the golden ratio. I did an introduction where I introduced it and such but I'm having trouble with how to proceed. I know it's supposed to be an exploration on a real-life thing because I looked at past IAs; even my teacher said that my topic is good but…

I'm wanting to do my IA on anything to do with voting, i keep hitting roadblocks in my work and i cant decide between a few ideas 1) modelling different systems, and seeing which is the most representative of our population (im running into issues here because i cant find a way to incorporate continuous data, but im not sure if working with discrete data will be a high enough level) 2) predicting the next election (im running into issues because im not sure whether conditional probability will work, i was thinking i could use bayesian stats or binomial distribution but im not sure) i also live in canada so i am dealing with a multi party system if any…

Hi guys, so I need a bit of help with my math IA topic. It was due like yesterday but I haven't found a concrete topic yet. Initially I thought about social media algorithms, but its is simple division and addition and percentage which is in the portion but not potential for 12 pages. Then I thought about music and trigonometry, but again, seems more physics than maths. And now I am thinking about movies/photos. But I am not sure how to go on about it. If someone could help me as soon as possible with an idea it would be great.

In this exploration, I want to see how mathematics is used to "predict" price movements by financial traders. This is very interesting to me as I want a career in Finance. Furthermore, I want to explore particular events such as the fall of the Lehman Brothers etc. and view correlations between stock valuation, output and market volatility. I also aim to find out what sort of correlations there are in particular stocks. I will use technical analysis (stats) on a particular stock index to find these price trends. The majority of the maths required in financial markets & trading is probability, statistics & stochastic calculus. The Black-Scholes equation (alth…

Hi, For my math IA, I chose to do traffic flow. So far, I narrowed down my potential questions to: a) How do trucks contribute to traffic jams and b) What causes traffic jams. Do you guys think that one of these is a do-able topic question, or should i change it? How can i structure my IA to get a good mark? Thanks :))

(Sorry this is so long but really need urgent help! Draft due next week!) Hi everyone, So I've been stuck on my Maths IA for a while after having to change topics because my old one was too fiddly. I've discussed doing the Birthday Paradox with my teacher, and she said it was a good topic. However, I'm on holidays now and have sent her an email asking about a problem I was having and possible solutions. In her reply she said she was worried I wasn't doing enough maths. What I was previously planning on doing in the IA was: - Discussing the Birthday Paradox itself and the maths behind it (how many people do you need to have in a group so that there is an over 50% p…

I'm planning on making my math IA about F1 but im struggling a bit with my ideas I first thought of modeling or graphing an circuit using functions but i'm not sure if that's good enough for an IA. I saw a few people mention that they wrote IA's about tire degradation but I'm not entirely sure how they were able to do that. Like what info did they need and what are the steps to do this? Lastly i thought about optimization and was wondering if there is an IA topic related to F1 that i could make. Maybe with the racing line, but still not sure how to approach it. Any insight about a topic (even suggestions to imprive the current ones listed above) is hig…

Hi! I was wondering how to approach my Math IA in regards to squash, a sport where a player hits a ball against a wall. I was thinking of calculating the serve of a player (me) in a 2D plane, using coordinates. Possibly contrasting two different serve types, overhand and underhand, and seeing how the ball travels in both scenarios. However, I am concerned about the physics involved in this, as I am not very comfortable diving very far into that. I am also looking for other ways I could investigate math in squash, If anyone has done an IA graphing the path of a ball/ or any object along a parabola, or If you have any tips, I would be grateful for any help …

Hi, so i'm doing my math ia this year and i take aa sl. i was thinking of maybe doing ballet with math as there are a range of topics related such as trig, diffrentiation, golden ratio, etc... however i'm unsure whether it is enough to secure a high grade or not as i'm not sure there is enough math. I could make it more complex by modeling a pirouette/turn but i'm unsure on the maths to do that and how to analyze it. Another idea i had was to maybe do something with diffrentiation or trig as those are my topics of interest but i am struggling to pinpoint a specific question. Any ideas or thoughts would be helpful. Thanks

hello, i've had some doubts about my IA. I am a big fan of anime, and in general i have always been impacted by the property damage in the shows and wondered how much they tallied up to... so mu question would be "how much would be the property damage of (insert anime show) would be in todays currency?" And if you wouldn't mind could you please send in some criticism and if this topic is doable.

I am looking for a Math IA topic that can potentially involve Chemistry, to incorporate my love for the subject into my IA. My idea would be to use a simulation and look at molecular geometry optimisation, however at first glance it seems a bit far-fetched, out of my league in terms of level. Do you have any alternative recommendations or experience? Thx!

Greetings, I'm a DP2 student who got stuck in completing the Math IA SL course since I've had lots of unfortunate events happen in the last 2 years, such as changing 4 math teachers and being on lockdown, which slowed me down in terms of completing the IA. Long story short, I've chosen non-Euclidean geometry for my IA and my aim is to examine the role of non-Euclidean geometry in navigation. Do you have any guidance or recommendations for me to follow since I've got 2-3 days to complete the final draft? Thanks in advance.

Hey guys, so im doing an ia about the correlation of a players transfer fee and his characteristics and attributes (nationality, buyer/seller club standing, past season player rating etc.) and was wondering if doing graphs with data points, pearsons correlation, r squared is enough. I really would want to do standard deviation or chi square or fishers exact test but dont know how to do them trust me ive watched a lot of videos but my brain isnt functioning. Anyways I hope you guys can recommend me methods to use. Its due tomorrow lol (dont think im gonna submit it tomorrow though) so any feedback would be HIGHLY appreciated. Thanks

So i started to work on fractal dimension as my IA topic but a-lot of teachers told me, you won't be able to reach to a particular conclusion for this topic. I explained that, main focus of my IA is investigating the coastline paradox as in how we can't accurately calculate the perimeter of the land because of its roughness and ziz zag lines. So i'll find it's fractal dimension and try to tell about the geography of the land furthermore compare it with other island's dimension. Plsss help me out

Hi guys I have a math Ia due by the end of this week, and I basically am not close to finishing. Im using probability and statistics to find the outcome of a football (Soccer) tournament. I need to find ways on how to do this. So far I used the poisson distribution to predict outcome of matches, but does anyone know how I can use the graphs in my IA (like how should I analyse it). And im also looking for other methods of calculating a match outcome, one where there is only loss or win for the knockout stages. The tournament I am predicting is the Euros 2020. Yes I know it has passed, but I'm trying to see how accurate can I be in predicting it. Any feedback is appreciated…

So I'm currently working on my IA project and I'm debating between using statistics and probability (AI and AA), calculus (AA), or a mix of both. If you're wondering, last year I had AI math and this year the class did a majority vote for AA (yes I know it's super weird but with covid, AI and AA classes were mixed together and they're pretty similar according to my teacher so). Anyway, my topic is how a cure for Alzheimer's disease would affect mortality rates in the U.S. and what that would that look like on a graph (or whatever math visual). I'm using HIV/AIDs as a reference since dementia can occur with that if it infects the brain. It also has the closest thing to a t…

Is correlation enough for Maths SL IA? "Correlation between MBTI and genetic inheritance"

I'm doing my IA on the correlation between MBTI and genetic inheritance, which simply saying about inheriting personality traits, but I'm not sure if it's enough for SL though. My teacher said that if I use sth from math studies IB will like it, cuz it's from different level, so i joined their lessons to learn sth we didn't from statistics, but i've just read somewhere on this forum that correlation is not enough for SL. Is it so? If yes, what could I possibly add or change not to score badly? My topic for the internal assessment is “exploring gini coefficient and seeing correlations to development indicators in Asian countries” The issue with this is that I don’t quite understand the gini coefficient and I’m having doubts on whether I should continue with this topic or changing completely. Is gini coefficient overdone as a topic? I am genuinely interested in this topic if I could actually understand it. I would appreciate it if anyone could link some resources that explain how to use gini coefficient or suggest ideas for easier IA topics.

Hello everyone, currently I am writing a new math IA and i decided to write it under the topic of Projectile Motion. What what I want to do is take a video of a setter (in volleyball) and him setting the ball up. I'll take that video and create a graph and will derive that function. The thing is, I think that this is a little to vague, and I really don't have a clue on what to really explore within my topic. For the volleyball idea, I wanted to originally see what's the best place to put the ball in the air to get a good hit in for the spiker. If you have any further suggestions on what else I should do with this topic, I am open to any suggestions. Thank you!

I'm an SL AA student and our final IA is due in a couple weeks. Right now my IA is 8 pages and my teacher said that it was pretty short, and that we should be aiming for 10-20 pages according to the new rubric. I'm confused because I thought even now the range was 6-12 pages and I can't find anything online that says 10-20; what have other teachers been saying?

I have my first rough draft of my math IA due in one month, and I am having trouble understanding if my topic is too simple, difficult, or vague for a Math IA, I would appreciate some advice. NOTE; I DO NOT TAKE PHYSICS, NOR WILL I BE TAKING IT. I realise many people say I should take on a topic that involves physics if I don't take it or completely understand the concepts I am using from Physics, but I have no choice.
