For the last few months I've been volunteering at my daughter's high school to help the 12th graders review for the International Baccalaureate (IB) Maths Standard Level Exam in May 2015. In the process I produced these review notes that I thought could be useful to other students preparing for the exam as well.
Review Notes for IB Maths Standard Level
I'd be grateful if you email me with any mistakes you find so I can correct them.
Best of luck on the upcoming exams.

Hi guys! I am currently working on my Math IA and I am really struggle to find a good topic (I am in Math SL Y2)
I think I will mainly focus on population curves in different countries (birth rate and death rate), whether it is more like of a quadratic, cubic or exponential curve, and I asked my teacher and he suggested to use integration and differentiation equations for this topic. However, I am not really sure in which direction can I go with this topic, like what I am proving or what conclusion I try to reach, and how do I apply the concepts or equations of integration and differentiation...
If someone can reply to my question, I am really appreciated and ca…
Hi, I was wondering if any one has any ideas for the Math IA that relate to scuba diving? I'm really struggling to find something... Or if anyone has done it in the past, what was your idea? Thank you!
Hey, so today my teacher has introduced the IA to the whole class. She also said that It could be about anything as long as math relates to it... Long story short, I really need help in deciding on a question but I can't really think of anything. I was really interested in doing it on a MMORPG like world or warcraft or some game of that sort but also was looking at doing it on the game on all android / iphones called "Tap Titan". I've learnt that there are many formulas that are taken into consideration to leveling up the characters, how much damage you do, how much money you earn and the HP of the monsters and bosses and many formulas of that sort. So what kind of ques…
I'm rather confused if its required by the IB, on penalty of losing marks, to always leave answers in 3 significant figures. Different sources tell me otherwise: a mark scheme from the old Maths SL syllabus (pre-2014) states that a -1 mark for inaccuracy be applied to the whole paper, once, if there is any instance of inappropriate significant figures in the answer. However, the mark schemes for the current syllabus are very vague regarding this, and I cannot interpret anything whatsoever. My Maths teacher is also rather unsure about the importance of significant figures, whereas DP coordinator says you can leave your answer to 99999 significant figures if you really want…
In this exploration, I want to see how mathematics is used to "predict" price movements by financial traders. This is very interesting to me as I want a career in Finance. Furthermore, I want to explore particular events such as the fall of the Lehman Brothers etc. and view correlations between stock valuation, output and market volatility. I also aim to find out what sort of correlations there are in particular stocks. I will use technical analysis (stats) on a particular stock index to find these price trends.
The majority of the maths required in financial markets & trading is probability, statistics & stochastic calculus. The Black-Scholes equation (alth…
So I'm trying to come up with a topic for my SL math IA and I'm currently working with the idea of modelling the population decrease of nesting leatherback sea turtles in Las Baulas. I plan on creating an equation to predict the further decrease of the population if humans do not intervene, and possibly seeing what type of graph this population matches. The only issue is I can't decide if it is more of a science IA or a math IA. Any thoughts??
Hi guys i have recently joined this group so i would like to say hi at first then ask you for some help in choosing my ia math sl topic as i am honestly struggling although i am really good at math , also i love the calculus and prefer it as the main topic for my ia . I would really appreciate your help even if it was a random suggestion it will definitely help me out brainstorming oh an i am a musician so do you think there is a topic relating to music?
I'm an ib student from tokyo and I'm currently learning maths sl from the haese mathematics text book "third edition". My school has 8 ib students and we're one of the first to do the ib program in Japan.
We all have the text books but the problem we have is that we don't have the solutions book. I asked the teacher if the school could buy them but apparently the states and Canada don't ship them over to Japan. So, the current situation we are in is studying without the solutions!
It's very inconvenient without the solutions and frustrating when we don't get the answer right and don't have the solutions! If someone out there has the solutio…
Below is the link to the experiment. If you could please do the experiment and post your results it would be greatly appreciated. (please let me know if you read the rationale prior to conducting the experiment)
Thanks so much!!
When replying please let me know if you stayed with your original door or if you switched and if you won or not.
I hope you are doing well.
I need to do my Math SL IA on SIR model. (Simulation of pandemics)
There is a hypothetical and isolated country with 10 million people.
Then, there are 10 immigrants who entered this country and 5 of them are infected.
R0 is 3, and I am varying the immunity rate.
My research question is how does the immunity rate affect the spread of the virus?
I am having difficulties in simulating a mathematical function which will simulate the behaviour of this case with SIR model.
Could somebody please help me to translate this case mathematically?
It would be an honor t…
Since the IA has to be about something I am interested in, I thought about my topic being art. However, I don't have any ideas on how to incorporate pre-calc and calculus level math into art. If anyone has some ideas I would greatly appreciate it!
For May 2020 results, did anyone else notice that their SL Math grade was much lower than their predicted? My SL math grade was 2 points lower than what was predicted, and I have never received a grade this low in any Math IB coursework. It’s not like I didn’t put much effort into my IA.....can anyone else relate?
Hey guys, I have a Math IA due on Sunday December 15, which is about 9 days from now. I want to do my topic on the golden ratio because firstly, I'm genuinely interested in it, and secondly, it's extremely risky to change topics at such a late stage. I know some of you will scold me for procrastinating on it but believe me I've legitimately been working on it. However, I'm having trouble finding an original idea based on the golden ratio. I did an introduction where I introduced it and such but I'm having trouble with how to proceed. I know it's supposed to be an exploration on a real-life thing because I looked at past IAs; even my teacher said that my topic is good but…
currently I am writing a new math IA and i decided to write it under the topic of Projectile Motion. What what I want to do is take a video of a setter (in volleyball) and him setting the ball up. I'll take that video and create a graph and will derive that function. The thing is, I think that this is a little to vague, and I really don't have a clue on what to really explore within my topic. For the volleyball idea, I wanted to originally see what's the best place to put the ball in the air to get a good hit in for the spiker. If you have any further suggestions on what else I should do with this topic, I am open to any suggestions. Thank you!
Hello i've decided to do my math ia on finding the length of a curved road
These are the steps i need to follow to find the length of the road :
Find the road on google maps
Find a curve that fits the road but i don't know ho to fit the curve into the road by polynomial regression and matrices
next i need to find the arc length through calculus
does anyone knows or ever did a math ia on the topic pls reply im in dire need of help idk what to do
here's a link to a file explaining the steps to find polynomial regression :
i dont understand the part where the person mention…
Hi, I need to find ideas for my MATH SL IA and want to do Probability. My 2 ideas are either
Probability in testing in medicine (false positives). Problem is I don't know what to do with the idea (what math to use)
Normal distribution (any topic, just measuring distribution).
If you could help me with ideas on any of the two as in what topics to include to get the highest grade I would be thankful.
Is it enough to do a Chi squared test, normal distribution graph and use the equation? (for Normal distribution idea)
Please I need urgent help and thanks
Hi! I'm struggling to find a maths IA topic. I do Maths at SL and got a 9 in GCSE (Equivalent to A**, this is just to show my level of capability) I am really struggling to find a topic that is not too difficult.
My name is Aurimas, I'm a part of a student venture tackling education inequality and we're looking for Maths SL students to participate in our program.
We have developed a test system that would provide a detailed and visual assessment of your skillset and help you objectively identify gaps in your knowledge. We are looking for students to complete these tests and send us back the solutions, which we would grade for free and provide you with the personalised skillset analysis.
I'm attaching here how the skillset document would look like. Let me know if you would be interested or have any questions.
Hello, I am not sure if peer-reviewing math ia's are exclusive to my school but upon giving my math ia to another student to "pre-mark" they return it very shortly thereafter saying it was too difficult. I asked three more people to look at it and they said the same thing. Asking two more people shows that my conclusion is true--people don't understand the mathematics that I am using in my math ia. This is a problem because if the teacher (who is currently absent) does not understand it either I do not have much time to fix it (since the final copy is due quite shortly after the draft is passed back). I have already given the teacher a pre-pre draft to look at but they di…
Hi, I'm currently choosing my Maths IA topic. I thought of doing something connected with skiing like measuring the length of different trails on a slope using calculus. Do you think this is a good topic to get a high grade? Or should I add some other calculations to it?
Hey! Please help me :c
My school is very new with the IB and right now we are working on our IA in Math aa
My topic is "Correlation between milk consumption and acne in young people between 15 and 17 years old"
Is it alright? I also wanted to compare these results with the ones of another country (since the milk consumption in Ecuador is kinda low)
It is the first year of my teacher in IB and she says I should have personal reasons to do it, but i have!
Thank you if anyone answers and sorry for my bad english
Consider f(x) = 2kx2 – 4kx + 1, for k ≠ 0. The equation f(x) = 0 has two equal roots. (a) Find the value of k. Anyone know the answer? I'm confused of what to do... i know that b2-4ac=0 but it doesn't help a lot because 16k2-8k2=0 8k2=0 and that doesn't work... Thank you
I have currently chosen to investigate tidal waves for my maths IA. However, I am unsure as to what other explorations I can do under this. (And whether or not this is too simple...)
Is modelling and predicting future tidal waves appropriate?
I have secondary sources that'll give me data of tides at different points in times at a beach, so I will be able to graph them. I will also use trig and algebra to find the ideal time to visit the beach with my "ideal" tidal height of 1.5 metres
I am uncertain as to what other maths/exploration I can apply to this
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Math has lately been my weakest subject, and sadly, we have an Exploration to write. Our first draft is supposed to be handed in tomorrow. I have already written 6-7 pages on my IA. However, my topic is "Patterns in Pascal's Triangle", and it just occurred to me that it may be a weak topic... What do you think? I am basically out of ideas, and I think it might be too late to change topic. The Pascal's Triangle was something I just chose to write about because I found it quite interesting when we learned about this, but not something I am very excited about.
I would appreciate any answers, ideas, tips... whatever! I just want to finish it, and get a decent …
I was thinking of doing my Maths IA in statistics, specifically something related to psychology, e.g. What is the relationship between mental illness and crime?
Anyone have any other ideas or examples for a statistical IA that incorporates a psychological element?
I'm currently thinking of a good topic for my Math Exploration, and I decided to take "The Handshake Problem" as my topic. However, I do not know exactly how to outline/start my IA. Like, i was thinking of applying the "N choose R" in it because we actually discussed that in class. But, I don't know how to make my IA even more sophisticated from then on. I was also thinking of applying this in a more practical sense, like "how many handshakes in a certain country," but isn't that too simple because i will simply just use the formula? Or, how should I explore the exponential growth (curved graph) of the increasing values of the handshake problem? But, I don't exac…
I was kind of wanting to just do "Patterns in Pascal's Triangle" and select 3 or 4 patterns that I'd explain and prove in the IA. Would this be okay, or does it have to relate to real life? Because I noticed a lot of the examples found a way to real-world subjects, like nature or rainfall for instance. I was planning on showing personal involvement by talking about my interest in finding patterns and the like, and some independent thinking when it comes to the patterns in Pascal's Triangle. Would this topic be okay?
My maths IA plan is due in a week and I am having trouble figuring out how I could further my investigation. My idea is to apply calculus and the principle of Optimization to minimize surface area to volume ration of a house. Does any one have any good ideia to how I could go beyond finding the optimum surface area to volume? Maybe an additional area of mathematics would be good.
I would really appreciate it if someone could help me.
Hey guys, my teacher has just announced that we have to submit maths IA topic proposals by the end of next week. I've thought of several - All of which turned out either immensely difficult, too simple or simply lacking personal engagement. More recently, I'm thinking of doing my IA on statistics and covid-19 owing to the fact that it's something that I am actually interested in and that statistics had always been one of my stronger suits in mathematics. Sadly, all I have in mind is covid-19 and statistics, nothing more. Seriously, I am stuck. Could anyone give some advice as to how I could explore this topic since I have got absolutely no idea as to how it show go like (…
I AM PANICKINGGG!! I thought about doing my IA on modelling a rollercoaster but I am not sure on how to approach it and how to use good enough math on it. Maybe polynomial regression.
Any other good ideas for a Maths SL IA???
So a while ago I started my IA on the subject of MC Escher's Tessellations. However I have realized for too late I have run into a horrible snag. I feel as if the mathematics that I am using in my IA are not nearly as complex as they should be for Math SL. Essentially, I decided to use a variety of transformations to illustrate how Tessellations can be created. I then created my own using a series of transformations. (Specially I created a Tessellations with triangles). While my teacher advised and approved of me to do this, I feel I have made an accident and it will cost me gravely in my Mark scheme. Is there a feasible way I can improve this or should I scrap it and do …
Hi, Now my teacher asked us to find a topic for our math exploration (IA) and he told us that it has to be something that we like. Now I like airplanes (jets, airbusses...etc) and I found more physics than math on the subject when I searched on Google. So my question is if there's any math behind airplanes, what level is it and what type (algebra, calculus..etc). And if there's not any math or Little math what topics can I choose instead? Thanks.
Im a hl maths student and i wanted to do my maths IA on a topic related to calculus as that was the option that my school choosed. And i came across optimisation of packagings. However ive seen that many people simply use the differentiation method to find the optimum surface area of the cans or products they are investigating. Hence to make it more complex i would want to use a unconventional theory or equation such as the brachistrone theory to find the optimum surface area of a can. Is it possible are there any other theories that i can use? and should i find the optimisation of a can or are there other things that i can find the optimisation of? or is this too simple,…
Over the Christmas break, my maths teacher told us to come up with a "plan of attack" for our maths explorations. Our entire class isn't quite sure what that means so we're all at different stages of it. I was hoping to get some help with a few ideas that I have.
1. The Brachistochrone problem - I'm really interested in this problem but the problem I have with it is that I'm not sure if it is way out of the scope of the maths SL syllabus. All the IA's I've seen on this topic have been from HL so I know it isn't overdone but this has led me to wonder whether this lack of SL IAs on this topic is for a reason. From what I've seen this is primarily a question of…
