For the last few months I've been volunteering at my daughter's high school to help the 12th graders review for the International Baccalaureate (IB) Maths Standard Level Exam in May 2015. In the process I produced these review notes that I thought could be useful to other students preparing for the exam as well. Review Notes for IB Maths Standard Level I'd be grateful if you email me with any mistakes you find so I can correct them. Best of luck on the upcoming exams.

basically, my teacher is asking us to come up with 3 possible SL math IA topics. so far, i have 1: determining the number of wishes a player would have to spend on average, to achieve a 5star character or weapon, taking into account the mechanics of the game (e.g. increasing rates based on failure) the game i'm using is Genshin Impact, i'm not sure if this is doable though i was also thinking of doing something related to prime numbers, or sudoku, but i'm not entirely sure. i heard that game theory is difficult to do, and not many people score well, so i'm debating whether or not to use the probability one. if anyone can list some suggesti…

Hi guys, can someone please tell me if the topic "modeling the tuition cost for the colleges" is a good math AA SL IA to explore? I am so confused. I feel like it's too simple. My other ideas are "modeling the growth of the usage of computers" or find the correlation between the country's GDP and Literacy rate. Are any of these worth exploring?

Hey guys. I’m doing my investigation on the correlation between football clubs’ transfer spend and their results. I’ve collected a significant amount of data but I think that my work is too basic and would want to incorporate some complex mathematical equations. Please help. Thank you MATH AI, SL student here, btw

Hey guys, my teacher has just announced that we have to submit maths IA topic proposals by the end of next week. I've thought of several All of which turned out either immensely difficult, too simple or simply lacking personal engagement. More recently, I'm thinking of doing my IA on statistics and covid19 owing to the fact that it's something that I am actually interested in and that statistics had always been one of my stronger suits in mathematics. Sadly, all I have in mind is covid19 and statistics, nothing more. Seriously, I am stuck. Could anyone give some advice as to how I could explore this topic since I have got absolutely no idea as to how it show go like (…

Hi, I am looking for a topic to do my internal assessment in Mathematics Analysis and Approaches. I thought about doing something related to finances. I thought of studying how someone could enrich by doing bank investments. This is still a broad topic (I think) and I am having trouble creating a research question on this topic. Also, I am not quite sure what approach would be interesting to study this topic. I can talk about growth and financial interest, but I don't know if this is enough. Can anyone please help me?

Hi guys, I was just wondering if anyone could offer me any ideas on what other statistical tests or math can be used in my math ia on statistics. I already did linear regression, pearson correlation coefficient and chi squared test. I was also thinking of doing standard deviation but I'm not sure how that would be helpful in my analysis since I'm comparing the relationship of two variables. Any help is appreciated! Thanks, Tony

Hello, I want to do my maths IA on astronomy, but I don't really know where to start. My initial idea was to predict the distance between earth and three other stars as well as how much time would I loose on earth if I visited each star and came back, although my teacher said that's too advanced and something I'd do in university not now. So he suggested that I'd do something related to old nautical instruments of navigation (eg: astrolabe); he thought I could understand how these work and how unreliable they were, but I'm not very interested in that. I really want to do something related to space, stars, galaxies, even "time travel" perhaps. Do you have any id…

Hi! I’m looking to find the probability of Lewis Hamilton becoming an 8 time world champion this year. However, I am unsure of how to do this, apart from using chi squared, Pearson coefficient and a best fit line and I wanted to know if anyone could give me some pointers on how to go about calculating this probability.

My aim for my math exploration is to find a US capital city whose climate matches Kyoto, Japan. I am only looking at the temperature aspect of the climate. I manage to narrowed down my data and now I am trying to find the equation to fit my data. I know that I am using sinusoidal modeling to find it, but I want to use the sine regression to get those models. However, I don't know if IB will give me less marks because of that. I have to find 6 models since I am doing the maximum and the minimum avarage temperaturesfor each city. I find this would make my paper extra long, and the equations would not be as accurate to compare and get an accuarate conclusion for…

I want to do my Math IA in correlation, and I'm planning to look into the correlation between drinking age and drunk driving accidents in different countries but I cant find any reliable source or efficient data at all! does anyone know of a website that offer such data? I'm also considering to look into the correlation between drug use and poverty or drug use and crime rate or something in that filed. Is that appropriate? And does anyone know of a database or website that offer such data? Many thanks in advance!

Hi I am currently writing an IA which is due today I am not sure what topic I should choose? I know it's very very late but I really need to do something for my rough draft. I am not really good at understanding math so you have to be a little specific while explaining what math I can use in a particular topic.

My Applications and Interpretations IA is going to be an utter disaster. My biggest concern is whether I'll be able to take the exam if I don't turn in anything at all, because right now I feel like all hope is lost. I'm far too late to salvage it. How badly will it affect me both grades wise and exam wise, and if I absolutely must, what tips do you have for getting something put together quickly?

I would really appreciate it if anyone could give me suggestions on how my topic could relate to statistical modeling math.. Could the beat in each genre of music have anything to do with it?

Okay, so I got to see my scored IA's that my teacher scored (so there's still the chance that the moderators might/lower raise the score). But out of 40 available points total on both of them, I only got 24. A bit miffed at the numbers, but as it was the best I could do (Math is my weakest subject) I wasn't surprised. So my question remains, is this a bad score? Should I worry about it? What's the average score? Thanks, I'm really REALLY worried about the numbers, so I thought this might be the best place to ask! Thanks!

Hi there! I'll be quick about it, I'm modelling the phases of the moon as my Maths IA because my teacher forced me to do this topic. I had done a great IA abut the Coastline Paradox but my teacher forgot that I told him about it and he gave the topic to another student so now I have to redo my entire IA. I just don't get how I can get a 16 page IA from this topic, essentially I just have to take pictures of the moon and model how much of it is visible but apart from that? I mean he insists that I can explore in Geogebra but I just don't even know where to start from. And it makes no sense to me because the answer of my essay is easily a sine function so anything outside o…

Hi, I have just entered grade 11 in the IB curriculum. This is the 2nd week of school and the school has assigned a math IA which does not count towards the final IB score however it represents 20% of every math's grade on my report card. The math should not be lower than grade 10 level or too complex that I will not be able to understand it. I prefer to choose something from an automotive area. Any ideas? These are the broad areas we can choose from: Navigation – right angle and nonright angle trigonometry Building a snow terrain park – eg amount of snow required, etc. Statistics (bivariate analysis) – eg correlation between a country’s healthca…

Hello, my IA is due very soon and I couldn't figure out another topic because I dedicated all my research towards one thing and could only find time to tweak it a little. So I want to know if the math level is difficult enough or how can I make it difficult enough for the criterion. My topic right now is finding out when a total solar eclipse can occur on Mars because the orbit of one of it's moons is decreasing and that increases it's apparent size in the sky so it can eventually cover the sun. To tackle my topic i had to find the distance of Mars from the Sun at one of the latest recorded eclipse (august 2013) and i decided to graph distance of Mars from the sun in…

Hey guys, My draft for mathIA is due in 1 week, and I have the topic but I haven't written anything. The reason is I don't know what to write about. I know I will be writing on the martingale method, and I have written a java script which simulates this method for 1,000,000 rolls of roulette on the American (double 0) roulette board. I can choose the initial bet and how much money I have at the start. Should I just write my IA on debunking the betting method? Or find the optimum starting bet based on the total balance? Or should I make a new betting method and write the code for that and debunk my OWN betting method? which would be better for personal …

Yeo so basically my rough copy for my math IA topic is due soon and i'm so lost, 3 of my proposals got rejected by my teacher LMAO. Like i wanted to relate tennis and math, but I soon realized that woulden't really work, unless I did probabilities and that wont even work that well. Then I TRIED to look at a correlation between injuries and sports or something like that but NOTHING IS WORKINGGG. if yall got any ideas for high scoring IA's, please comment an idea, i'm really desperate.

Hi all! Its an amazing opportunity to be on this forum amongst so many fellow IB students! For my SL maths IA, I have decided to do a statistical analysis on how HDI affects PISA exam scores with the overarching topic being if students in developed countries will do better academically on average. The course content I plan to connect it to is median, standard deviation, mean, pearsons correlation coefficient, correlation, least squares regression line, boxplots, range and percentiles/quartiles, applying it to the statistics unit that we have done. My plan is to take data from 3 different sets of years and do an analysis on each of them and then compare them with eac…

On 9/20/2016 at 10:41 AM, IB Math Helper said: The first order physics that you are talking about is fine by IB examiners (I know because I am one of them). Your concern about focusing on the Mathematical Understanding because it has the highest number of points is unfounded. In fact, in my experience of marking, this is one of the easiest to get marks for. You can double check calculations and explain why you choose certain formulae or made certain assumptions and as long as you know what you're doing, this satisfies the examiner. What's harder to score marks on are the Personal Engagement and Reflection criteria. I find that most students struggle with these cri…

Hi everyone, I need a math IA topic pretty soon and I've been struggling to find something that I both like and can find an appropriate application of math to. I want to go into architecture so I was thinking something about that, but the issue is, most of it is just geometry which I think is too simple for SL Math. The other idea I had was too complicated and there was no research question I could come up for it. It was exploring ideas of parametric architecture like Zaha Hadid uses. Here's a link to some basic 3d parametric modeling I looked at, but again, it seem too complex and I dont know where I would go with it. Any suggestions? Thank You! 3d parametrics

My last topic was too complex for me so I decided to change it to something simpler but I'm having hard time developing my ideas. I'm planning to do my math IA on something about projectile motion and baseball using calculus. My current idea is "what is the most ideal angle for a batter to hit a home run with the least force possible?". I know that I will take air resistance into account, but I may neglect drag force caused by wind as the calculations may be too complex. Also, I'm not sure if I should include the calculation for momentum of ballbat collision or not as it may be too physicslike (besides I'm not sure how to solve for it using calculus method). I wil…

So for my Math SL IA I decided I wanted to investigate what factors affected a nominated movie's chance of winning the Academy Awards Best Picture Award. The factors I picked to investigate are total box office earnings, genre, and release date. I am only using data from nominated movies from 2011 to 2014 so as not to overload myself with data. My problem is, although I have all my data, I don't know what to do with it. My teacher suggested trying to find a regression or make a probability equation. However all of my lists of data only have an x value, so I am unsure how to fit it into a regression. (I tried using '1' in the y value for a movie that won and a '0' for on…

Hello there, So I've gone and done my IA on probability only to find that my "use of mathematics" part is lacking. Atm my teacher is only willing to give me 13/20 (which is quite low since I'm aiming for a 7). My IA is on Prosecutor's Fallacy and solving that through Bayes' Theorem, and I guess it is rather simplistic because Bayes Theorem is HL (I'm SL) and to delve a lot further into the theorem is too complicated for me. I've just heard that probability IAs are infamous for lacking in Criteria E, which carries a lot of marks. At this point I'm quite sure I don't have the time to change my topic since I've got other IAs to do, so are there any ideas on how I can …

In this exploration, I want to see how mathematics is used to "predict" price movements by financial traders. This is very interesting to me as I want a career in Finance. Furthermore, I want to explore particular events such as the fall of the Lehman Brothers etc. and view correlations between stock valuation, output and market volatility. I also aim to find out what sort of correlations there are in particular stocks. I will use technical analysis (stats) on a particular stock index to find these price trends. Hey guys, I'm planning on doing my math IA on the golden ratio but the golden ratio on facial structure is done a lot, so my teacher suggested that I do it on a mix of architecture, nature and facial structure. Is this a good idea, or does it make more sense to focus on one of these. Also I read somewhere that the Fibonacci sequence is out of the HL portion too, is it ? and if it is, does it make sense for me to do it anyways ? Also this is my first IA in IB so I'm not really sure how I'm supposed to approach it and my teacher is not being of much help. Do you guys have any ideas or can help in any way ?
