Well I'm about half way through this portfolio, and before I reach this section of it I'd like to get some feedback. When it says: "Use your quadratic model to decide where you could place a ninth guide. Discuss the implications of adding a ninth guide to the rod"- I don't understand what it means by implications. Like how it would effect the equation?, or simply the physical or real world implication. All comments are appreciated. Sorry that I did not provide further information on the portfolio I'm trying to focus on the portfolio at the moment, please refer to a different thread for specific details if you are not familiar with the portfolio.

My Math SL teacher is only letting my class of 4 people including myself one week to complete the ai portfolio. The IB program has only just started at my school (2 years). So I was wondering, is one week the standard time to do the portfolio?

This might be a little silly, but what exactly is a math portfolio? My math teacher didn't really clarify, and we got a practice one due Monday that won't count for anything but is nevertheless still a large task. It is a Type I and is on the subject of sin waves (ex. y=2sin). I've discovered that the properties seem to be really similar to parabolas (ie. vertical expansion, etc.) but what I'm confused with is what exactly am I supposed to do? Write an essay? Explain everything in great detail? :/ It's apparently an older one from 1998, so supposedly it's "easier," but I'm not sure. Also, what's a good graphing program I can use to post graphs? Or, should I hand graph…

I'm going to australia for university and i was just wondering how IB Math SL compares with HSC mathematics. I know that it is at least harder than general HSC (formely, 2 unit) and probably just as hard as math extension 1 (3 unit). I have looked at the sylabus of all three courses and the main differences i could see is that 2 unit math does not to binomials and some of the statistics that we do. Is there any other differences? Does anyone else know the if Math SL is harder than extension 1 mathematics?

I have a little trouble with this, see if anybody could clarify. So the original sketch is a LxW = 8.3x8.6 graph of two cubic functions (I used the Cubic Regression thing on my graphing calculator... is that enough info on how I got it?) The question is, when I double it, how will I do that? And by double, does it mean that the measurements will be 16.6x17.2 or something like so? Another question would be, when the original needs to be modified to a 9x5, how do I go about doing so? Sorry for all these questions, and thanks in advance!

Summing it up, I'm simply looking for fellow astonished and perplexed IB students facing this new Internal Assessment. I'm probably going to need some help, and I was wondering if it was just our school who has been cursed by this "Trapezoidal Rule" IA or if there are people as annoyed as us. Sincerely, Paulo Gregorin

Hello. This is my first post!! =) I have to start on my Math SL Type II Portfolio. I'm choosing between BMI or fishing rods. Which one is easier to do? I mean, like for example is BMI mainly about matrix? How about fishing rods? Thanks in advance!

Hey, I am almost done with my portfolio for Logarithms in IB Math SL but i am having some trouble with justification on the first part where it says "Write your expressions in the for p/q where p,q,E,Z. I know... I feel a bit retarded not knowing what to do, but I really don't understand... help? Here's a question: A rectangle is bounded by the semi-circle with equation y=(25-x^2)^(1/2), -5<x<5 and the x-axis. Find the dimensions of the rectangle having the largest area. I am nowhere near the correct answer, and I don't have the right approach at all. Help?

Hey, Im in the middle of my IA and im stuck on part of the task. From the points (24,-3) (15,-2) (8,-1) (3,0) (0,1) (-1,2) (0,3) (3,4) (8,5) im supposed to give an equation that expresses the relationship between x and y. I know that if these points are plotted they look like a horizontal parabola I just dont know what the equation for this type of parabola is, since its not a function. Anyways, if you can help me figure out an equation that links x and y it would be helpful. thanks

Hey all, Started IB two days ago...hope my motivation keeps up for the duration of the year. Except for one subject. You see, before I had considered IB last year, I was (and am still) quite bad at Maths. This is because the subject was unheard of in my old primary school in the middle of nowhere, and that next year when I started high school the Maths was such a radical change that I failed to do the homework and sunk lower until last year, few years later, I chose an alternative (applied) Math class, which touched on topics briefly and easily, "dipping" with small tests. Suffice to say I learned hardly anything. I am fine in other subjects, which is why I chose IB. I ha…

I gather from ibo.org that Math Studies SL, Math SL and Math HL are available. I am doing my Master of Computer Applications and need to purchase some High School math textbooks from an international book fair in India. I wish to read western authors. My question is, is Math SL a subset of Math HL, i.e. if I am going to buy Math HL books do I also need Math SL assuming I've read neither or equivalent? Also what's Further Math, I didn't find it in some ibo documents? And can you suggest some widely available authors of Math IB SL/HL - great books that don't have typos? Long lists are welcome Thanks and regards, Stranger Crimson

Well, I've been working on my IA and was looking up an example internal assessment to model mine off of when I found this place. Apparantly they have the internal assessment I'm working on and I figured it would be amazing to get a copy to see how mine compares. It definently sounds like cheating but if anybody is willing, would I be able to get a copy of that?

Hey guys, I tried downloading the Maths methods data booklet from the first topic but for some reason it's just not working (don't worry, it's probably got somethin to do with my own internet connection/acrobate reader). Is it possible for anyone to email it to me, or if the admins have it could one of you attach it to a PM and send it to me please? A friend of mine needs it urgently.
