Hello there, I want to know if this topic would be good as my IA. I'm in math standard level. Here is my topic: I want to find out (if there is) the correlation between hours of sleep on friday/saturday nights and the average amount of hours a student spends on studying/working on the weekend. I want to relate this to statistics. Create a frequency table, drawing a graph, finding the mean, mode, median and analyzing the results. I thought this could work because it is in the syllabus, however i'm not sure if this topic is accepted. I'm open to suggestions to improve the topic if necessary. Thank you in advance

My topic is the relationship between honeybee ancestors and the Fibonacci sequence (here is a brief explanation). Binet's formula can be used to find the value for the nth term of the Fibonacci sequence and it's highly relevant to my IA. My question is, should I include a proof of his formula? I wouldn't be proving it myself because it's quite difficult in my opinion. But is it something I should still include, if I don't do it myself? Would it help if I explained in detail every step of the proof, to show that I understand it? Or is it better to just leave it out? I would appreciate a quick response, because my paper is due tomorrow.

Hello everyone! This is my first post to IBSurvival. My IA topic is two-dimensional projectile motion (bit-off more than I could chew, but now I'm going to stay around for the long-haul), and I'm just blanking on the easy, first step. I realize that taking the antiderivative of acceleration finds velocity, and the antiderivative of velocity finds displacement, but…how do I represent acceleration as a function f(x)? What I'm saying is, acceleration in the x-axis is some number, and a constant 9.8m^-2 in the vertical. But, how do I write acceleration in a way that I can take an antiderivative of it? say I have a set, at the origin in this case, where the following is tr…

So my math IA is due tomorrow and I was close to done just half an hour ago. Then I found out I have done a major flaw. And I mean major. I've used the complete wrong ways of analyzing my statistics (using t-test when I had two variables, something you apparently can't do), and flipped the hypothesis and null hypothesis around. I've been wanting high p-values to be able to reject the null hypothesis because my hypothesis is that there is not a difference in the data I'm comparing, while the null hypothesis has been that there is one, when it is usually the other way around. This has gotten me really confused on my topic, which feels... "great", knowing I have until tomor…

Hey guys, I'm doing my Math IA about finding the maximum angle possible between a person's ears and the speakers in a movie theatre.. So, obviously, I'd have to find a function for the angle theta, and then find the maximum of the function. I did it wrong, and I reached a point where instead of finding a function for theta, I ended up finding a constant (I think I had too many defined numbers)... How do I make it so I find it in terms of a function? Here's my diagram: I'm trying to find a function for theta (1 or 2, doesn't matter, both sides are equal anyways) where measurements for A, B, S, F, and C are available. What I did was used Pythagora's to find D and E, and co…

Hi everyone, I am in Math SL and I have decided to do my Math IA on gambling. I'm going to focus on binomial probabilities and Pascal's Triangle in regard to slot machines with 3 reels and 5 symbols. Do you think the topic is okay? My teacher hasn't really given us any feedback or told us what were expected to do for the IA. What kind of calculations could I do except for the chance of winning something? Thanks, Jule

Hi, everyone! Currently behind on collecting data for my IA, I need to collect a few scores and data with this survey. Current and past students welcome. Thank you! -Math grade (letter and percentage)/ IB Points received: -GPA unweighted (if applicable): -Do you listen to music while studying and doing math homework? -If yes, what genre? -How much time do you spend on homework and studying for your math class?

Not the bees not the bees! OH GOD! Crappy Nicolas Cage movies aside, I'd really like to do my IA on the Fibonacci sequence and the way it relates to honeybee family trees. Here is a pretty solid description of the basic principle. It seems a bit simple though. I was wondering if anybody had some ideas as to how I could complicate it a little to make it more relevant to SL Math. Any and all help is much appreciated!

I'm starting off writing my Math IA, and I don't completely understand exactly what the point of it is. I'm pretty sure I want to write it about basketball- possibly the correlation between field goal percentage and where on the court the basketball is shot. I don't understand how I'm supposed to develop this into a full fledged essay though? Any help would be much appreciated..Thanks!

I've chosen to do my Math IA on bitcoins, since I figured there's a lot of good math topics relating to it. Unfortunately, I know there's a lot of good ideas, I'm just not sure which would best tie in with this math course for the IA. Can anyone who knows about bitcoins think of a good focus that I could write about? Thanks!

My teacher has given us three weeks to complete our IA with giving us NO information besides it should be in between 6-12 pages. I did mine. I completed it about half way then she told me I couldn't do that topic. It's due on Friday and I am yet to come up with a new topic. What should I do?

As weird as this is, can you guys help me by listing your heart rate, for 5 minutes. All you have to do is check the number of pulses that pass in 10 seconds and multiply it by 6. Repeat this process after 5 minutes for 5 trials. Record your data and help me out by commenting your heart rate for 5 mins (5 trials) and age and gender. Also, please help me by taking readings after a short sprint/jog. I'm so sorry if these seems like an imposition, but i need live data from - A woman - A man - A child - An Old Man - An Old Woman soooo if you can check for your grandparents too! I don't have any! PLEASE HELP! thanks

While searching for past papers, I realized that there are only mathematics method and math studies before 2005. Is mathematics method same as 'mathematics SL' that we are attending now? Or is it a different subject? Anyone know about this. please tell me.

I am taking exam in 2 days on Math SL next week. I have problem with the normal distribution questions which ask for what x-value gives probability of P, or find P(X<x) those kinds of question where mark scheme specifically highlights the need for the use of Z-values. This is hugely absurd to me because I have used CASIO fx-9860 II for past 2 years of IB and even though I have knowledge of what Z-values are, this calculator is not able to Find Z-values according to the possibility, nor interpret Z-values. For 2 years, I have wrote method as 'Using g.c, Normal C.D' or 'Inverse Normal'. So, I am kind of really lost with a day or two left until the exam, What should I do…

Hello, I have chosen gambler's fallacy as my topic for my maths IA which my teacher has approved. Now I regret it. None of the math is up to the level of the course and the topic is really simple. Someone suggested I do simulations but I don't even know how to do that. Is this topic too hard to write a good maths IA on and should I change the topic?

For the exploration portion of my math IA, I want to explore the delinquency rates between New York City and Oslo from 1950 to 2000. Do you think I'd be able to extract enough information from this? Or should I change it. My math teacher is not extremely helpful when it comes down to details like this and few people in my class have a good idea of what we're even doing with the exploration.

Hello fellow IB students, I've yet again, hit a dead end. For my math IA I thought I could use latin square and esoteric mathematical theory to show how to solve a sudoku puzzle, therefore investigating how to perform this. I haven't really found out a formula for the latin square, nor the explanation for it or how to apply it for sudoku, I just know it's mentioned as sudoku being a typical latin square. So I wonder, are my idea for my IA any good? Am I allowed to do this? And if someone would be kind enough to help me understand what the latin square is so I can apply it. I just know its a latin rectangle and that it's arranged in such a way that no orthogonal contain…

So of course for IB it's necessary that I do an IA. My idea was comparing the math grades (or possibly overall gpa) of students and whether they listen to music while doing their homework/studying. This is my fist IA and I'm not exactly sure how this idea would be graded, is it too simple, not complex enough? Any information, comments, or a way to expand this idea?

Hey Guys, I was just working on my exploration but I'm a bit confused with the structure. So, bascially...the main things I want to know are: Do I need to give a hypothesis at the start of the exploration? What kind of things should I include in the evaluation/conclusion?How should I organise the exploration, i.e. what format should I use?Do you have any tips for getting full marks in the exploration?Any help would be appreciated!

As you may have seen, I have done some Youtube videos geared specifically towards IB Math SL and IB Physics. I had been going through past exam questions, showing exactly how to solve them step by step. However, I was notified by the IB that I must take them down, and so I had to comply. My intention was to help you all out in any way I could. I’ve been an IB teacher for many years, and enjoy helping out more than just my own students. With this in mind, I am willing to do a series of Youtube videos about specific topics within the IB Math SL curriculum. So if there are specific topics that you’d like to see done in detail with lots of examples, just post it in thi…

Hello people, So I'm finished with my Math IA but the only thing left is the reflection. I'm not exactly sure about what to write. I looked it up online and it says that I should discuss the implications of my results, state the significance, limitations, extensions etc.I stated the limitations but I'm not exactly sure about what 'implications' refers to here. And what does extensions mean? I'm lost about how to analyse and evaluate my exploration. And my topic is Modelling Population of the world, if it helps answering my question. Please help. Thank You =)

Hi! I'm currently thinking of a good topic for my Math Exploration, and I decided to take "The Handshake Problem" as my topic. However, I do not know exactly how to outline/start my IA. Like, i was thinking of applying the "N choose R" in it because we actually discussed that in class. But, I don't know how to make my IA even more sophisticated from then on. I was also thinking of applying this in a more practical sense, like "how many handshakes in a certain country," but isn't that too simple because i will simply just use the formula? Or, how should I explore the exponential growth (curved graph) of the increasing values of the handshake problem? But, I don't exactly k…

Hello, I've been changing my Math Ia topic so much I just feel so lost I was thinking about doing the Fibonacci sequence and maybe doing the golden ration together with it but I'm not sure if ti would have enough math in it. My teacher said it has to have a good amount of math but he doesn't directly tell me if this will or will not result in an enough amount ): I was also thinking about doing patterns in the pascal's triangle but I think that's way more limited.

hi so ive got to write an IA for Math SL and i decided to do it on the side effects of the type-2 diabetes drug "actos," which is known to increase the risk of developing heart failure. so far my idea is something along the lines of finding out how many adults in the US could get heart disease as a result of taking actos, assuming that all adult type-2 diabetes patients take actos. my outline: - how many adults there are in the US (its online) - how many of them have type-2 diabetes (its online) & what percent of all the adults in the US do they make - the probability of an adult with diabetes developing heart failure (its online) & the percentage of these actos p…
