I am struggling to decide upon a decent topic for my Mathematics Exploration. I want to employ some economic theory into my investigation, as Economics is my HL subject and I want to apply calculus in the work. I was thinking about taking a firm such as Monsanto, regard as a monopoly, and pose some question about its efficiency or something. I could take real life figures about the sales from the Internet, and then make graphs or functions and calculate whether the revenue covers the costs etc. I could add some details like "will it pay off for Monsanto to sell their products at a price for a luxury car". Do you think any of this makes sense? Please help, I feel I'm maki…

So I am having to start my Math SL IA real soon. I was thinking about doing something with roller coasters if that is even possible. If it is does anyone have any idea what I could do with it. My teacher said soemthing like just one specific part of the building process but I feel like that won't be even 6 pages long to be honest. I need help ASAP. Thanks

Hi guys, I am trying to work on exploring Fundamental theorem of calculus because I wanted to see the proof of how integral and differential calculus are inverses of one and the other (beyond the formula). I seem to be able to do this but i cannot make it personal enough, I feel like I'm just presenting the thought of other mathematicians in my own simpler words. Do anyone of you know what else could I talk about? What about any ideas with optimization?? Economics perhaps? Any suggestions? Please help me (Dying...)

Hi guys, Can you help me pick a topic for my Maths Exploration? It has to be somehow related to Art, or else I won't do it... Things I've in mind are: Escher's Art Maths in Photography I have no idea how the Exploration is supposed be, so if you have the time can someone please explain it to me? Thanks,

My initial topic for my exploration did not pan out very well, so I was hoping to do my exploration on Probability and Statistics (most likely relating to veganism either by comparing nutritional data of various diets or something else along those lines...) but I'm not sure how to make this very sophisticated. Math is not my strongest subject, which is why I'm hoping for a less difficult topic, but I don't want to make it obvious that I'm taking the "easy route" and therefore flunk my "Use of Mathematics" criterion. My teacher isn't much help, as she is as confused as I am about this new IA format, but I really don't understand how to make Prob/Stats seem advanced and IB-…

So i chose to base my exploration around the number of possible grids of a sudoku puzzle, but i can't seem to find much use of advanced mathematics. It seems most of the mathematics in sudoku is based around permutations and summations, which im afraid might not be advanced enough...also i feel as if im just copying down what other people have already published and explaining the process behind it...i guess what im trying to say is what is an exploration?

Hi everyone! So I have this exercise and it's messing with my brain very hard. a) Expand Σ7r=4 2r as the sum of 4 terms. That's ok Σ7r=4 2r=240 b)Find the value of Σ30r=4 2r And we're supposed to come up with a formula. I've come across exercise like this a lot but not given methods of solving the question... Do you know any? Thank you!

Hello. I have already completed a first draft of my math IA, but my (severely limited) feedbacks from my teacher tell me that it is really poor right now. I have chosen a horrible topic but I have to stick to it as I don't have enough time to explore a new one. Basically, I am exploring the properties of hypercubes (tesseracts more specifically -- 4th dimensional cube), as inspired by the book Flatland. I have explained how one can go about finding the coordinates, vertices, edges, facets, and diagonals of a tesseract (and dimensions beyond), but my math is still severely limited since the most complex property I'm working with here is the pythagorean theorem. I have res…

I would like advice on how I can set up good outline for my topic. In addition, refining the topic to make it a great question seems to be necessary. Am interested in exploring to what extent dimensions higher the 3rd be mathematically proven. is it good or is it too broad? Tips on how to go by it would be great. Thank you have a good day.

Hello guys, First post here and great to be part of this community. So, straight to the problem, I was doing my IA on Torricelli's Trumpet (which is a solid formed by 1/x and rotating about the x-axis) and I've run into a problem. http://mathworld.wolfram.com/GabrielsHorn.html Here is more or less a simplified version of calculations but under surface area, I cannot for the life of mine, figure out what happened between step 1 and step 2. Where does the root(1+y'^2) go??? I've searched this up and the farthest I've ever seen it going was taking derivative of 1/x, squaring it, and then it jumps forward to y. Can someone please explain what happened?

Hello! I'm struggling with my math SL exploration due in February mainly because my topic is pretty complex (not really). Hello beautiful people, I am trying to search for a topic for my Math IA as my teacher has decided to get us started looking for ideas, which I've found to perhaps be the hardest step (since my teacher is new, has not much knowledge about IA, much less the new syllabus, etc etc). I think I might do an exploration on something to do with games/casino/economics. The question is, although I will narrow down the idea to maybe a theory or system, there are still multiple SL topics within it, such as probability, statistics, exponential/logarithmic graphs/equations, since I will use a range of mathematical concepts to explain, highlight and prove the theory/system. Is it oka…

Hello! I'm having a bit of trouble with my math IA. I chose to do it on time dilation, since I am really passionate about space and time and I thought it would be quite interesting. Except I have a bit of a problem, I can't seem to figure out my thesis. I was planning on making this an investigation about the effects of time dilation, it's applications, and significance but I can't seem to form a thesis from that. I would be much obliged to any suggestions or help, thank you!

I know this is probably a really stupid question, but with the math IA are we supposed to come up with our own sample questions or can we get them offline and go through them step by step? I'm citing where I get everything, and for the first Bayes' Theorem medical problem I went through, I used the example online simply because it was a really basic example and I thought it would be easy to explain, but now I need another medical example before I move on to like how it affects the legal system. Or maybe I won't see how it affects the legal system. IDK what in the world I'm doing. I just have that one question at the top for now basically.

Another IA thread, yiiieho. Anyhow, I'm writing my IA on the spread of influenza and trying to focus on influenza A and be local so, in Sweden. What I have for now are numbers from 2012-2013 on how many (per 100.000) got influenza A in different ages. I have wikipedia of course http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mathematical_modelling_of_infectious_disease which helped me out a lot and then a million other links which does give me some insight into the whole thing as well. My issue is that I tend to go more biology-way than maths-way and I don't really know what to do at this stage. I would love a few suggestions on how I could continue as I'm really stuck right now. Hello everyone! Looking at the criteria it tells me I need organisation, personal engagement etc. I was wondering what the purpose of the exploration is though. Is it to take a math theory and apply it directly to my own life in a self-conducted experiment, or to go through a mathematical concept step by step and relate it personally? Is there any specific structure that it must follow? Does it need citations? Thank you in advance!

Hi everyone, This chapter is giving me a hard time... So a few questions: 1) I have U4=17 and U20=67 and I need to find U40. The answer in my book is 125 but I get a fractional answer.... 2)How can you find the nth term of a U3=45 and S7=2735 (its the geometric sequence) find U1 and r. How? 3)In an arithmetic sequence U1=28 d=50. in a geometric sequence U1=1 and r=1.5. find the least value of n such that the nth term of the geometric sequence is greater than the nth term of the arithmetic sequence. At the beginning of my equation everything's fine but when i have to use ln it starts going crazy. Thanks for your help! best

Hi everyone! Happy New year! *back to intense ib math* Well it's probably not that intense but I don't understand how to solve it... The length of a rectangle is 5 cm more tha 3 times its width. The area of the rectangle is 1428cm2. Find the length and width of the rectangle.So.. if I got it right, we can write L(+5)=3W right? and L*W=1428. Then.. I don't know. I feel extremely dumb... Could you help? Thanks a lot!

Does anyone know how to do the question( provided in the pic) ? If you know, would you not only provide the answer (which matches the answer key) and explain why it is so , and further, mention where the reference in ib hl math textbook is. If possible, I would be very happy if you can provide me with really useful revision notes for math hl. I'm about to have my final in 2 days, and I'm now working hard for it. Thanks!

Hi guys, I'm considering blackjack for my topic. If I am going to do Blackjack, do you think the math is on par/lower/higher than our Math SL level? I am not that smart in maths though.... Personally, I think that Blackjack will only involve card counting (probabilities... EV... hypergeometric distribution, standard deviation/normal distribution)? What about other aspects that I can touch? permutations and combinations? Thank you!

So, I was going through the list of possible IA topics our teacher as examples and I found the Bayes' Theorem really interesting and simple enough for me to understand!!! I was wondering how I could make it into a good IA topic. Maybe," How can Bayes' Theorem be used in the Medical Field?" Or, "How can Bayes' Theorem be used in today's legal systems?" Are those too narrow? Should I just make it as simple as "How has Bayes' Theorem contributed to today's society?" I know I'll need to give a few examples to show how it works, but I just don't know how narrow I should make the topic! Please help! Thanks!!

Hey everyone, I was wondering if anyone could help me out generating some ideas for my exploration. So, my Math IA rough draft is due Thursday. Only 1 person in our class of 15 people have started (I know we are all horrible procrastinators seeing as we learned about our IA's in October). But I seriously can not find an interesting topic. I'm not a great math student, but I'm pretty decent in Sequences and Series, and Probability and Statistics. I was trying to think of a topic that dealt with music or something medical that would be easy enough for me to do but still at (or above) my level so that I will score decently. Is the rate at which an epidemic spreads (Such as Swine Flu?) a good topic? I'm really confused on what I'm supposed to be doing. Can anyone help pleas…

Hello, so I have this Math IA proposal due next week. I am struggling on how to find my data needed for IA. I have looked at sample Math SL IAs, and they all seem like they are researched on brand new topics that are not supposed to be taught in Math SL class at all, so my guess is that they all got the data from somewhere outside the classroom; it's obvious that all those theorems and data did not spring out from their brains. My question is, how do you find the data for Math IA at all? It's not like you can trust the Internet for that. Especially for something like statistics, data is very significant. And the theorems, formulas, designs that they came up by usin…

Hi guys, I have a problem with developing my exploration. I chose the topic of probability in genetics - conviced that it would be interesting and supposedly easy to write. However, it is quite the opposite. Although I have already written a bit, I feel like it involves math at a REALLY basic level (punnet squares, sum rule etc.) I don't know how to complicate at all... I try to look for probabilities with different sets of features and I am stuck at this stage. Any suggestions what to write about/ what to focus on? Thanks in advance!!

So after a series of 4-5s in my math tests, I decided to step up and gain 6s-7s. The problem with my school is that the math textbook is too easy. The test questions isn't from the textbooks, as they are a few times harder than in the book. So I need a textbook that has hard questions for me to practice on, so I am not dazed by the test questions. I'm asking you guys for help on which textbook to get for more practice: - Which publisher? (Pearson, Oxford, etc.) - Which level? (SL or HL, as currently my SL textbook is too easy and the test questions are too hard) - P.S. price doesn't matter Thanks!
