hey guys!! Im currently doing math SL's IA, and got some ideas but not sure if they allow sustain investigation :I If anyone can give a tiny little feedback(s), then please!!! any!!! ideas: 1) Modeling earthquake question: log can be involved by richer scale, any other suggestions? 2) swimming and math: surface area and buoyancy?! question: too simple? 3) Possibility of hitting a jackpot using combination question: which mathematical area can i use from ?

Hi everyone! I have to do my math IA right about now, and I started with the idea of discussing horse jumps (where the apex/ maximum height is always the same) and then linking it to something like graphing the jump as a parabola where the start and end distance from the maximum are the same but im really confused as to what type of math topic i could use.. math equations and parabolas? (too simple? ) kinematics and projectile motion? (if yes, HOW?) displacement? PLEASE help with ANY idea possible or any suggestions! Thanks

Hi there! Are we meant to be using the population or the sample standard deviation, or both? My maths teacher taught us both, but didn't make it clear which to use, and it never seems to be specified in exam papers. Thank you!

1) For the line defined the parametric equations x = 3 + 2t , y = 4 - 3t, z = 1 + 5t find the coordinates of where the line crosses the x-y plane. 2) Find the coordinates of the point where r = [-2, 5, 3] + t [-1, 2, 1] intersects the x-y plane. I don't get how to do them. Please help

Hey guys! My year was asked to think about ideas that we would do for our maths exploration, and I've been searching for the past week for any ideas. I have a few ideas, however I'm not sure whether they'd be sufficient for SL Maths. Also, one huge problem I have is that I might have a stimulus, or a general idea I'm interested in, but I'm a little unclear on what I should do to explore further. We'll get to ask our teacher for feedback in about a few days' time, however I want to get your feedback as well so that I can make changes asap So my ideas are: 1) Cyclic pentagon - I watched a video online, and they were suggesting something about measuring the ang…

Hi, for my maths IA I want to investigate if it is possible to predict stock prices using probability. I will look at the firm apple and see by how much each month the price has changed for 2 years. With that data I want to calculate the probability for the price to rise again if it has risen the past two years.. however I am not quite sure how to do that, since i can't use the normal probability equations since there is a lot more possible and total potential outcomes... my question is basically how do I do the maths??? thank you in advance for anyone who is willing to help me out

Hello! So I've decided to write my IA on the topic of "can stock prices be predicted mathematically?" What I am going to do is I am going to take 6 companies, 2 of whiches stock prices were pretty much only rising/falling (for example Apple) - this would be a "control group", and 4 of whiches stock prices were shifting around constantly (haven't found a good example for that yet). I will then collect the month-by-month stock price changes (how much the price rose/fell from the start of the month to the end of it - e.g. at the begining of month X the stock price was $2 per share and at the end it was $3 per share, so the change will be +$1 per share) for the past 3-5 year…

Here's the question: Find the Cartesian equation of the line that passes through point (4, -2) so vector [4, -2] and has a normal vector given by vector n = [2, 5] Now here's what I did: vector n = [4, -2] therefore slope of the normal = 2/5 thus the slope of the line is -5/2 so the direction vector of the line is [-5, 2] The vector equation would then be r = [4, -2] + t [-5, 2] And the parametric equations would be x = 4-5t --> t = (4-x)/5 y = -2+2t reduces to y = -1+t --> t = y+1 * Was this my critical error? Reducing when I wasn't supposed to? So then (4-x)/5 = y+1 4-x = 5y+5 5y+x = -1 But that's not the answer...it's supposed to be 2…

My math mark is not what I need it to be right now so I was wondering if there's anyone who is willing to help me for my last unit (somehow boost up my term mark) and exam prep. Or if anyone has any resources. I know term mark doesn't even count in the end but with the bell curve, I'm sitting at around an 88 when I need at least a 93. My teacher says I can push it up in exams since they're easier than our tests...and I've tried really really hard on our tests but it's just kind of deflating when you study your butt off for a test and still get nothing higher than a 3/4 (and that's the HIGHEST mark I've been getting). It's just tests though...in class stuff and homework…

Hello everyone, I'm working on my Math SL IA, and I was interested in exploring the 17 different types of symmetry which can be found in everyday objects. I would take pictures myself and analyse the symmetries present within them However, I'm unsure as to whether this topic contains enough mathematics for Criterion E. Should I go ahead with it anyways? Thanks

Stopping Stupid Mistakes

Hey all, I just needed some quick advice. I just got back my results for my first Maths test which was just on prior learning to make sure it was up to scratch, and I'm pretty disappointed with my mark. There was one obscenely ridiculous mistake on the first question, in which I simply ignored my working out and subtracted instead of added, which is pretty humiliating considering I got top of the grade in Maths last year There were also just one or two other stupid mistakes, which would have ensured I got full marks, so I'm pretty annoyed about it. The problem is, I've had this issue with stupid mistakes for years, and whilst it's decreased from maybe 10 stupid mist…

Hey! Would an Exploration on the golden ratio, specifically "Exploring the Golden Ratio - Discovery, Calculations and Applications", be too general/vague? id be planning to discuss/show its discovery and the calculations involved, then display its applications in art and nature, proving or disproving that the ratio applies to several objects. also, would the maths used be too basic for SL maths? thank you!

Does anyone recommend any particular books to self-study and practice maths for the May 2016 exams? I have the Oxford one, while I think it has a nice amount of exercises, I find the explanations poor and not very engaging (in other words, dislike it). Any other ones you could recommend me? I've been thinking about the Pearson one, but I'm scared of buying it since I have both of their textbooks for sciences and I'm well aware they REALLY like talking and adding extra content a little too much! Thanks.

Hi all, I have my Math mock exams in 1 day and basically no zilch about any of the content . Unfortunately, I have not payed much attention in class this year although once I get the hang of a topic I am quite decent, I will need a 5 on my exam in May and I am aiming for the same score on the mock exam. Would anybody here be able to give me advice on the best way to succeed in the minimal amount of time? I don't believe I have time to watch all of Mitch Campbell's videos for example but at the same time I don't think I am ready to just do practice questions without learning the content properly. Please Help!!!

I decided to do my exploration on climate change by comparing changes in temperature in different continents over the past few decades. I'm going to collect data of annual temperature and temperatures across 10 years or so to make exponential functions and sin functions with my GDC (line regression). The problem that I have is I don't quite get how the IA works. Is the whole idea that I set something to investigate using mathematical knowledge and concepts and come up with a conclusion of what I've found? In my case, is what I can investigate is which continenet is the most vulnerable to climate change and to what extent climate change has affected global temperature? T…

I'm studying for my math test and there's this one question I'm just not getting. A particle moves along a horizontal line with velocity given by v(t) = 2t^2 - 11t +12 where t is greater than or equal to zero. Find the total distance the particle travels from time 2 seconds to time 5 seconds. The question also asks to find acceleration and "a" and "b" if the particle is moving left for a<t<b. Both of which I have figured out. It's just the total distance I can't figure out. We've done other problems in class and I figured them out. My teacher said just to graph it and write out an expression based on the graph and I tried doing that but...I'm getting a reall…

Any ideas on how I can make this more complex for SL (instead of something SL appropriate?)
