I'm doing a Math IA on pokemon, I'm about 9 pages in but when I look over it I have a hard time figuring out how to work math at the course level into it, since most of the mathematics I can think of being relevant to this topic is basic probability. Any thoughts? So far I've done probability of getting a shiny Pokemon, specific IV, specific moveset. I'm considering doing conditional probability for Pokemon breeding.

have two possible topics that I want to do. I just need ideas as to how I should implement the maths into them? 1.I wanna measure the responsiveness of touch screens. I have plenty of phones and other touch based devices at home of different variations to help me compare them. 2.I've constructed a sort of automatic button pusher in order to click 5 different phones at a specific spot. That spot activates advertisements in a game/app and gets me some easy in game currency. I'm thinking maybe I could use this as a topic .... What kind of math would you guys use here if this idea is good enough? Should I combine the ideas and use touch screen responsiveness as a factor? What…

I'm doing my math IA on comparing growth of other animals compared to humans because humans reach maturity a lot later than other animals, so I thought it would be interesting. Unfortunately, I really don't know where to go from there, and my rough draft is due Tuesday. I figured I could do exponential curves and compare them, but that's definitely not enough math. Or maybe I could find a logarithmic function from them? But I don't know how I could compare them. Another thing is my other animal is a golden retrievers because I thought it would be easy to find data, but all I found was this http://www.goldenretrieverclubofsandiegocounty.org/Slow_Grow.php I am confused an…

For my IB Math SL class, we were required to complete our rough drafts in mid-November, and they were graded and returned to us this past week. My topic was about mathematically modelling the drops of roller coasters using cubic regression or sin curves (this modelling is actually model of the position, so the graph would look exactly like the picture of the drop). To make these, I needed to scale photographs of these drops and use a graph to find coordinates of points that the track of the roller coaster lay on. After doing so, I would either find the equation for the sin curve that would fit the data or use cubic regression. I did not really clearly explain how exactly …

So I was searching for topics for my math IA and I came across a youtube video where a guy proved the binomial theorem using algebra. I was desperate to finish my IA on time, so I ended up with the same topic for my IA. I was halfway done with my IA but I suddenly started thinking if I was actually plagiarising someone's ideas because the method in which I solved the binomial theorem is the exact same method the youtube guy used. I did keep referring to the video while doing my IA. However, I gave slight explaination on Pascal's triangle and factorials as that was needed for the main body of my IA (proving the theorem). The youtube guy did not explain anything on Pascal's…

So I'm doing my ia on statistics and I realized that there is a narrow range of "math" to explore and thus I realized that only by going beyond the curriculum e.g. chi square test a bit will the ia seem more complex and developed . However, the level of the math is still commensurate with the curriculum. I was wondering if I will be penalized for this or if this will improve my ia score as I honestly do not know how to apply some of the math in the curriculum to my ia. For example in this ia, the math goes beyond the sl syllabus but receives a high score of 5 out of 6 :https://drive.google.com/viewerng/viewer?a=v&pid=sites&srcid=Zy5jb3BwZWxsaXNkLmNvbXxjb3BwZWx…

G'day guys I'm just sitting down to start my math IA and the idea I originally had is not going to work (effect of rate and resistance on a rowing machine 30 second test) I have now started looking for another idea and I'm interested by the 100 prisoners problem. I was told by my teachers that IAs which revolve around probability often lack mathematical depth (Criterion E) which i the most heavily weighted area? I will talk to my teacher about this again via email; however, I wanted the opinion of an extra source. Would this IA work? i believe it could be interesting; however, I have no idea if it will be mathematical enough? Cheers Lads P.S well done for…

Hey Guys! It's time for me to do my Math IA and I have a idea I think would be interesting. I am going to see how different cleats affect things such as dribbling, and shooting of players (my friends). I have a bunch of data for it and I thought I would do a statistical analysis such as getting the r-value and what not? Does this seem good, and if so, what suggestions do you guys have? Thanks

Hi everyone, I'm in IBY2 and studying Maths at SL. Our teacher for the past two years has been horrendous; she blasts through things and then gets angry when we don't understand, which eventually lead to a huge confrontation between her and some members of our class and the head of department getting involved. Although theres not quite as much resentment, I (and the rest of the class) still feel awful about the actual maths; I'm practising a maths past paper as we speak, and there hasn't been a single question I can do without looking up how to do it. I need at least a 5, completely non-negotiably, and preferably more, but I'd be ok with a 5. Is there anythin…

Hey guys, I was just wondering about what the rationale of the math ia is specifically asking for as the ia booklet our teachers gave us wasn't so clear. If it helps my topic is investigating how family income may have a correlation with sat score. I wanted to kind of emphasize my curiosity in questioning whether or no the standarized testing is actually that fair if we consider how other factors may play an indirect role in the score received. This could also link to my experience with taking standarized tests but I'm a little lost still... Any help is appreciated! Thanks again, Tony

Hi guys, So I'm working on my good copy of the math IA and I'm just wondering what a good rationale will be like since the ia booklet our teacher gave us was not really specific. If it helps my topic is on the relationship between family income and SAT scores. I kind of wanted to emphasize how I was curious to understand whether or not a standarized test score is really fair way of determining one's intelligence as certain people may be at a disadvantage to begin with e.g. family income situation. This could also link to my experience with taking many standarized tests as well but I'm not sure how. Any feedback is appreciated! thanks! Thanks again, Tony

So I have chosen to do my SL IA exploration about the population growth of microorganisms. This was inspired by my EE, which was in Biology (analyzed a fungus species growth rate in different light conditions)... Now what i am wondering is...what i could write about for the topic? Should i write stuff like the general idea for the curve (which forms like an S shape as it plateaus at a certain point), and then try to use the data i have acquired (from my EE) and try to find out some additional information about the microorganisms that i had (e.g. i can find the inflection point of the curve, where the growth starts to slow down?). Should i somehow try to prove the popul…

Hi guys, I'm currently in grade 11 IB in Ontario and I'm taking standard level mathematics. I'm currently taking advance functions in the first semester and calculus in the second semester. I'm wondering whether or not the IB mark after the conversions will replace the OSSD (Ontario Secondary School Diploma) mark on the report card. Say if I did poorly on the IB exam and my converted mark is not as high as my OSSD mark, would it still replace my current OSSD mark in the course. Also, I would like to know whether or not the IB mark only applies to the second semester calculus mark and not the first semester advance functions mark since there are no conversions in the fir…

Hi! I've decided to model BMI for my Exploration IA but it has come to my attention that something similiar was done as a SL Portfolio back in 2009.. My teacher approved my topic, just to clarify. My IA is due in 3 days so I am not keen on changing the topic, but are there any ways I can avoid falling parallel to the portfolio? Thanks. By the way, for people who are doing proof IAs, doesn't a lot of their work show up as plagiarism? How does that work? Thank you in advance!!

Hi all! I'm really struggling with Math, halfway through IB1. I've always been below average with sporadical understanding of topics, but I really need to do well in my Math exam. Just going through the book trying to understand everything is making me anxious and confusing me even further. If you have any tips on how to get a handle on Math, please share your tips, I'd really appreciate it!

Hello, I've just recently been given the Math IA information and examples with no real help from my teacher (who doesn't really know what they're doing and have only been doing IB for 2 years). I'm decent at math when I have a teacher and can learn from websites too. Quite frankly I'm confused how to search for a topic and make sure its on the syllabus. I'm very interested in cardiology and researched into possibly doing my IA on the fourier series. I saw that this is only suggested for HL, but I'm very interested in it. I was hoping that anyone could let me know whether I should attempt to do something with fourier series or something else and possibly what I could do. I…

Hey guys So last maths test a few weeks ago I got a 4. (I usually get 6's and 7's last year and this year the teacher changed and she started with the calculus topic). I got determined for the next test (which was today) to do really well and go back up to standards.... That didn't really happen. I got a reaallyyy low 3 and I knew I screwed up once I left the classroom. So, any tips or help on how to do better on calculus?? Mocks are in a few weeks and I'm getting kinda desperate Should I ask my old teacher to stay after-school for extra lessons? Practice more? All help is really appreciated!!

Math SL or Math Studies?

Hi everyone! I've recently entered a new school which previously taught a different Math curriculum compared to my old school... I've missed out on some of the knowledge and skills. I've done well in the first quarter of the year, being at the top five of the class. However, since I've never liked Math before, I kinda slacked off the second quarter and did very poorly. Plus, there were things I didn't learn in my old school that weren't clearly explained by my teacher and there was limited time to how much I can do the exercises... and so I've failed the last two tests. I'm thinking of whether or not if I should drop from Math SL to Studies... Math SL is required in…

Hello everybody! I need some help on my IA topic. So what I decided to do is "Perfect day to run if one has seasonal allergies"! I chose this because I actually am a cross country/track runner (personal engament criteria?), and suffer from seasonal allergies. My teacher wants us to have a rough draft of our IA when we come back from winter break in Jan, and I'm having difficulties on exactly what type of math I can use to solve this. Hey, I'm doing my maths exploration on the harmonic series, specifically I would be investigating the strange properties of it, including some paradoxes concerning it as well. However, I don't really know how to show personal engagement. Like, what am I supposed to do/write to show the examiners. I chose the topic because it is music related, hence the name, and since I'm a keen musician myself, i thought it would be a good idea to see how maths is connected. Thanks in advance. Any advice on anything at all about the exploration itself would be greatly appreciated also.

I'm planning to do my math IA on roller coaster but I'm not sure on how to approach this topic. I research and it might require lots of math such as geometry, trig, polynomial and calculus. But i'm not sure whether these three math methods are related in designing a roller coaster or not. I'm thinking of designing a thrilling but safe roller coaster. This way I might need to find the slope/height of first drop, turns and loops which means I might need to make up these numbers. Or should I just find these numbers from a real life roller coaster? Or should I research on modelling of the segment of a roller coaster? Any suggestions on how to approach this topic? And t…

So I've decided that I'm going to do my maths exploration on the topic of Price Elasticity of Demand (PED), as I also take Economics. I think I have the theory down and everything, and my teacher seems to think it's an alright topic, but I'm stuck when it comes to a specific research question. I have no idea what kind of question to answer with this theory. I was thinking of connecting it to Total Revenue (TR) and Revenue Maximation and do something along the lines of "To what extent is a knowledge of PED important for a firm seeking to maximise revenue?" Although I think that might be a bit TOK. I was also considering something like "What is the link between PED and T…

Hey friends! I decided to do math IA on Newton's law of cooling which is based on calculus. However I don't know what Im supposed to do. So far I only just "modeling" the formulas but then I dont know what to add next :/ I planned to find numbers and substitute in the formulas and I was also thinking of adding graphs but I dont know how to explain. Here is my brief outline: - rationale - introduction - modeling law of cooling - find some data and substitute into formula (maybe 3 conditions) - do graphs - conclusion I'm quite sure this is not enough but I have no idea what to add more. Please help. Thank you!

(Updated Nov 28, 2014) Hi everyone. My name is Mitch Campbell, and I've been an IB Physics and Mathematics teacher (and examiner) since 2002. I've been working on a series of video tutorials designed to help you get through the Math SL syllabus. (I also have Physics SL/HL) in another thread. As a result, I have a few hundred videos I put up on youtube. Of the 6 topics from Math SL, I have 5 of them up! (I just put up the vectors videos today). Whenever I need to use a calculator, I use an emulator version of the TI 84, and I show you every step I use to calculate and solve. You can see the playlists I made here: Topic 1: Algebra (sequences and series, exponents, …

Hello, I'm in IB1 right now and my dad sort of pushed me to do maths SL. I debated whether I'd be able to because even though I was in higher maths at my MYP school, I know it's not the same as SL in the IB. Right now I'm getting a 4 in the class, and I don't know whether I should keep it. I understand things in class, but I lack transfer and don't do well on exams when questions are worded differently. I don't know if I could just get a 5 by working harder, but I'm tempted to go to studies and maybe get a 7. The problem is, I don't know what I want to do at university, so I don't know if it will require maths SL. I like both science and art and would ideally study …

I've been talking with someone about universities and such, and we discussed the fact that I need a 5/6 to get into the faculty of science. Currently in my math class, I'm "struggling". Hint the " " because I can do fine on assignments such as homework, but when it comes to tests I do poorly (in my eyes). I believe that the real problem lies in my studying habits. I've been trying to push myself to review class work, do practice questions and so one, but I never seem to be able to do so. If you guys (with experience or good grades) have any advices or tips for me it would be great help. Thank you.
