When I looked back to the questions I ve done for two years in my ib life, I cannot understand how I solved the questions now!!!! Especially for calculus.... I tried some past papers, still not feeling comfortable solving the questions which I did before.. Worrying about my coming math exams..unconfident....

Hello, I finished my math IA a while ago and it didn't go so well. I did it on investigating infinite fractions, and I struggled to get a good grade on it. I wound up with a 50 % on it 10/20. That what the teacher gave me, however I felt I did better. The real problem for me is that I'm predicted a six in Math, and I need a six inorder to get into university. I'm struggeling to get above 72% on both my paper 1 and 2 exams for next month on past papers I'm doing. My question is, will the grade boundaries come down at all for this years exams? Or will it stay pretty much the same?

Hello all, SO I am currently taking my Mock Ib examinations, and I realize that I NEED to get my act together with my mathematics or I am actually in danger of not passing the exam, after two years of just about scraping by (5s and the occasional 6 or 4) in my classes. We've covered all of the material in class - but I am quite weak in many areas, flat out don't understand a couple, and overall, my main problem is that I simply can't seem to remember how to solve questions! I don't want to have to work through my entire maths book again - but how can I really sit down and revise otherwise? Any tips?

Hey all, my exploration includes the study of trigonometry to find the optimal ball placement on a standard 9ft billiards table, my exploration will include diagrams of sorts to depict things like, the pockets of the table, 2 cue balls, etc... I was wondering how do I go about making such diagrams. Also is there any possible way to incorporate angle of deviation into the study, modified to instead depict the cue ball hitting the other balls, along a predicted trajectory? Thanks

Hey guys I was doing a past paper (Thursday 7th may 2009 Paper 1) and a question came up that just made sit there for 10 minutes like this -> even AFTER looking at the mark scheme.. For those of you who have it, it's question 6b. I'll type out the full question for those of you who don't. I have no problems with 6a but b just left me blank (maximum mark: 7) Let f(x)=e^(x+3) a) i) Show that f inverse of x = lnx-3. ii) Write down the domain of f inverse. b) Solve the equation f inverse = ln(1/x) The problem is: How do you solve if it isn't equal to anything????? I'm just stuck because all it tells you to do is solve but I'm confused since what do we solve for??…

Hi People! I just managed to drop and break my casio fx-9860GII, first year mock exams are coming up and i am in need for a cheap and good graphing calculator, i was wondering if casio fx-9750GII is good enough for SL math? If anyone in IB2 has been using it and can conclude that its good enough i would appreciate that a lot! In advance thanks!

A few weeks ago we had our mock exams. To practise for the mocks I did the old math sl exam papers from 2011 and scored around a 65/90 (a score 5). However when we did the specimen paper I got 40/90 points (score 3). This kind of result seemed to be consistent through out the class. And we all wondered, " Where were all the logarithms? Where was the ordinary math?" Our teacher thought the same, that the specimen paper was really hard and only contained the things in the new syllabus. Such as differentiation using substitution and wierd trigonometric identities. So firstly I want to ask: Is my class the only one that saw these kinds of results? Secondly: Do you think th…

Hi, I have a Math SL question about trigonometry, well my question will easily be explained through the solution of this problem found in a past paper where it solves the critical points of f1(x)= cos x + sin x It follows: f1(x) = cos x + sin x 0 = cos x + sin x cos x = sin x x = π/4 and 5π/4 (apparently use your knowledge of the unit circle) Now how did they get those two values? Sorry I don't know where to ask for a quick answer and so yeah it'll be nice if you can help ._.

I just started my IB Diploma Programme and i plan to take the Math SL this year, because i heard that i will get really busy and occupied next year. Do you guys had any experience about this or are currently facing the same dilemma as me? What does it take to take the exam this year? My senior did it last year and she told me she did 50 past year papers, and sacrificed a lot of time on other subjects. But, she got 7 in the end.

Hi guys, I'm doing my Math SL IA, and have found it incredibly hard to get started. Mainly because my teacher has 0 experience, never went for official training etc and is a new replacement for the old Math SL teacher who left. So I'm stuck on my own, and the new syllabus doesn't help. I've tried reading some sample IAs and they didn't really provide much guidance. I'm doing mine on betting systems (which can also be used in stock trading etc), such as the martingale. I would like to just explore the topic, pros and cons etc, but I heard that I must also design my own system with improvements to the original one. Is that true? How would I go about doing that? Because al…

Hello there! So I've been struggling with studying for this class, and it's been driving me nuts! You see, I took this class last year, but I had my schedule a little too packed and I really neglected the homework and such. Needless to say, I got a less than satisfactory grade on the final exam. So this year, I'm retaking it. Every day, or as many consecutive days and I can manage up to the date of the test, I'm going to post a math question with a worked example, or as worked as I can get it, asking for assistance. This way, if I get the answer correct, it can help anyone else out there struggling, and if I don't, someone else can hopefully provide insight? I also encou…

Hi there! I'm solving past maths papers and I'm stuck on the question 10 from M10/5/MATME/SP2/ENG/TZ1. The question I'm having trouble with is (b)(i) I see that the solution says the answer is z = -1.64, but I have completely no idea where did it come from, so please if anyone would explain it to me, I would be really grateful. Note that the standard deviation is not given - the next question is about finding it having known the standardized value.

Hello everyone, I haven't even decided on my exploration topic yet but I need to hand in my introduction and sources tomorrow. I'm thinking of doing something related to the correlation between life expectancy and countries GDP. I will connect that to Chapter 10 Bivariate Analysis. I am just not sure whether this topic is enough (this may not be 1000+ words) for SL exploration. I actually found this idea in the textbook and I can easily find data on the internet. But I don't want the whole paper filled with graphs. Can anyone advice something? How can I lengthen it? Or how can I relate this to the maths more? Thanks in advance:) Ill really appreciate your help IB fellows…

Hey guys, Alright ill be straight forward, I'm in Math SL right now, and I am getting an average 4. I don't want a 4, I want to at least get a 6. Also, dont give me the advice to go down to Math Studies, because I know I can do this, but I just feel like I dont have the right resources. Does anyone, have a guide, or maybe a whole overview (study guide) which might have some questions at the end or something. Just want to do this over break so I can be set for when I go back to school. Thanks so much everyone, I will +rep anyone who can give me this.

Going into 11th grade next year, and from the stories I've been hearing, I'm terrified. One particular aspect that I'm uncertain of is math. I'm taking SL next year, our school is not offering HL, due the fact that there are only 7 people that are planning to take SL - Only one wants to do HL. Now, I like math. I don't love it, but I don't hate it as much as everything else. I'm reasonably good at it, I can do a lot of problem solving, but I'm not brilliant, once I understand something it's easy though. We're currently doing Algebra 2, chapter 7 of the McDougal Littell math book. Now, due to a few issues happening at the beginning of the year, we have had little time to …

Hi everyone, We're doing an IA in my IB 1 Math class as our summative as well as practice for the IA we'll be writing next year. I'm wondering which topic I could choose that would only require what I've learned from the syllabus so far. We haven't done calculus or anything. My teacher said that an easier one to do would be statistics, but how would I approach this stream of math without my IA being too simple? I was thinking of a topic along the lines of organ donation in my province but I have no idea how to turn it into a question. Coming up with a topic seems really tough and I'd really appreciate your help! Thank you

Hi all, my math SL ia question is on the use of trigonometry and geometry to help find the optimal place to set the cue in a game of pool. My set topics would be trigonometry and geometry, and my teacher said it would be good to add in angle of deviation, but it would be tricky. Im really having trouble applying any theoretical knowledge as my math is really weak (failing), and the IA draft is due in a couple of days, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Right now for my math exploration, I am thinking of doing something that involves the electoral collage. More specifically using mathematical analysis in order to determine if the mathematical collage is a viable method in which to elect a president. So for example some of the math that would be involved would be looking at how the votes were distributed between the states, if that is "fair" and comparing roughly the number of votes a state has to it's population. And then perhaps looking at the possibility of a election candidate "losing" the election, by having less than 50% of the votes, yet "winning" the election. However, I don't think it falls under a specific math…

So here's the deal: I took Math SL last year and got a 3 on my exam. I'm trying realyl really hard to study this year around and retake the exam, but the problem is, I'm a very visual lerner,a nd in most cases, need to be able to see someone complete the process. Does anyone have any suggestions? I was talking to my teacher from last year, but she doesn't have a free period when I do anymore. Short…

My math exploration is on the topic of norm distribution curve grading, where i examine how teacher can use norm distribution, z-score to alter students' scores, aka scaling My aim is to see who benefit the most from the class if a teacher do scale a test so ill be using a hypothetical set of raw scores from students as raw data, calculate the average, standard deviation, then i would use them to calculate the z-score of each student's raw mark decide what should teacher's "ideal distribution" would be, and plot in the z-score of raw mark to the new ideal bell curve to see the scaled mark and to see which student get bumped up the most ... does it sound too easy? am i us…

Hello, My math IA is about replicating a medieval math formula for calculating direction between cities. Whilst doing it, I feel puzzled - my approach to the question is a very original one (don't want to post the exact reason why), but doing the calculation, I feel like my explanation is just 'lifted' from the two textbooks that explain the formula. Is this plagiarism? How do others do their IAs? Thanks.

Hi, We're really far behind on our syllabus in math, which means we need to do the exploration pretty much entirely by ourselves, and I'm lost so I thought I'd ask for help here first My topic is cryptography and my plan is to use matrices. I know this isn't in the SL syllabus anymore but my teacher said it was at the right level for the IA. Regardless, is it okay to only use matrices or should I bring in something else? (If so, suggestions would be greatly appreciated - I'm planning on using simple arithmetic to explain the history of cryptography in my introduction, but that would be very brief and simple) Also, I'm a bit lost as to what to do in the exploration itself.…

Hi, so my IA's due on tuesday, thats 3 days from today, and for the most part, i. am. DONE. (': lol. so my question is, do you guys have any pointers or guidelines that i should check for, to get as high a mark as possible? My topic is the relation between listening to music and mathematical proficiency. It has a whole bunch of statistical analysis involving: IQR, standard of deviation, variance, outlier range, measures of spread, measures of central tendencies. also, i was wondering if i should add anything into it. I'm looking into adding z-scores through my histograms, and possibly throw in a variance number.

Hey guys! Just had a few questions about the Math SL IA, since we're about to start thinking about ideas. 1. Do the teachers give you certain ideas, so that you can choose, or do you have to think about them yourselves? 2. How long does the IA have to be? 3. Is there data collection involved? If yes, how are we expected to process the data? 4. How much does it count for in the course? Answers to these questions would be a great help! Thank you...

as you all might know, the Internal Assessment (IA) for SL Math has changed this year because of the new curriculum. Now we have to find a topic ourselves, and investigate it [ t(-_-t) to IB ]. Like maybe traffic vs. construction or reaction time vs. time of day. but these have already been taken. So i desperately need suggestions for some topics. please help. )':

Hey there, fellow IB survivors! I need help for my math IA topic and suggestions for what to do with it. Well, getting right to it... My math exploration topic is about prime numbers and I'll be exploring them in depth to find how many prime numbers are there To start with, I will explore sets of 10 meaning 0-10, 10-20, 20-30, 40-50, 60-70, etc up until like 1000 or something and plot the chart. I'll then graph the data and create a function for this curve. With this curve, I'll see if there are any x-intercepts I'll then explore different sets of numbers, for example... from 0-50, 50-100, 100-150, 150-200. up until like 10,000 and then create a function for this curve a…
