Hey guys, I'm having a little bit of trouble with the Math IA since now we can choose our topics we can basically do anything. I first came up with the idea of fractals and had almost a clear idea of how to develop it, I talked to my math teacher and I was going to use sequences for Geometric Fractals or just linear algebra for Algebraic Fractals...however, I was browsing through the Math IA Topics on here and came across many threads related to fractals and many moderators told users not to chose Fractals as their Math IA topics. After looking for many other topics I finally decided to do it on Kaleidoscopes. I'm interested in it since I'm also a Physics SL student and i…

Hello I was wondering if anybody could help me come up with a topic for my math exploration. Ive been trying to think of one for a few days now, and theres just no way I can. I need one desperately right now. Im interested with doing anything with probability, expectation or statistics, from a math point of view, and from a topic point of view I was thinking either sports, or cards, or lottery. If anyone could help me it would be really greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot Luka

I'm having a total brain freeze. Can anyone give me the answer (including steps) for the following? f(x)=x^-1, g(x)=3-x (fog)(x+1) I know the answer is 3-4x+x^, but I cannot work out how to get there. TIA.

Hello, I really need some suggestions for my IA Math topic. So far, I am interested in doing something related to my dad's company, which is about environmental management. There are all kinds of data-base available for me to use (e.g. amount of carbon dioxide released in the air, air monitoring, testing the chemical substances in wastewater from the factories). I am thinking about doing something statistical-related. But I am not sure which variables I should be doing or comparing to. Is there any suggestion that I can apply these kinds of data to my IA? Please help, thank you!

Hi friends I'm thinking doing IA on projectile motion in Angry Bird. The thing is I don’t know where and how to start… I was thinking of finding velocity, acceleration of the each bird then find the maximum point and the height of the trajectory. I have no clue at all... Am I allow to use physics formulas for this exploration?? Projectile motion has to do a lot with angles but then if I find an angle would that be considered as trigonometry or something like that? Is it possible for me to find angle if I do my exploration on calculus? or should I just give the angle by measurement or something along those line. Thank you in advance!

Hello! I'm doing my mathematics exploration, and i have to hand in the fisability plan, but i don't know how to state it. I know my question is quite confusing but im completely lost with how to write/structure it. I know what im going to do, its just the formal structure that confuses me. Im doing it on beauty and ratios and to test my hypothesis (if beauty is really in the eye of the observer, of if it is defined in the ratio and angles of the face) thanks!

Hello everyone! So being Math SL my weakest subject, I am now having trouble choosing an IA topic and I must have an idea of what I am going to make for friday. The topics I find the easiest are statistics and vectors, yet I don't know how to find a statistical problem that is SL level and not Studies level, and I haven't come with any idea with vectors. My passion is music, but the ideas i have thought of relating to this, require very hard work in collecting data and I don't wanna kill myself doing this because I got tons of other things to do. So any ideas with something that won't take me a century collecting data and is between my interests or at least from statisti…

Heya! So a while back we had to pick our IA titles and from the ones I checked out on the internet ''Squaring a Circle'' fascinated me the most. After talking to my teacher we agreed that it's a good start, she said that I should start my reading on it as soon as possible. The problem is that now, when I have started reading the proofs and solutions to the problem, I am a bit dumbfounded as in where to start. Am I supposed to prove or solve the problem on my own terms in the Internal Assessment or am I asked to simply reiterate upon what has already been proved? How should I approach this correctly?

Just settled on an area for my Mini Maths IA, "To what extent can you predict the probability of winning the powerball (lotto)" I was wondering if this question gives me enough scope to to write the exploration please note that because this is my Mini IA the page count is only half of what the real one has to be I think it is 3-6 pages. Also could I possible involve calculus into this not looking for calculation help just some direction so I don't go mindlessly looking. Cheers in advance for all the help Shadvertiser

So i have to propose a final topic (and its scope) to the teacher, but one of the criteria for the exploration is the ''Personal Engagement'' one (i think it was 0 to 4 points). We went through several samples in the class, and i did see some personal POV in them (e.g. one where there was a guy who was saying how he chose the topic because he was some athlete and was curious about the probability of scoring a goal) I know i'm really interested in biology, especially microbiology, but i'm not sure how can i combine that with mathematics (and keep it ''challenging enough for SL level''). I was also thinking about the topics ''fractals in nature'' and 4D geometry, but …

Hey, so i thought about exploring the Basel Problem and how Euler solved it after 100 years. It basically asks for the precise summation of the reciprocals of the squares of the natural numbers to infinity, i.e, 1+(1/2^2)+(1/3^2)+(1/4^2)+... So would it be appropriate to investigate the methods and concepts used by Euler and how Riemann managed to build on it years later to define the basic properties of the series using his developed Riemann Zeta function? What i'm trying to ask is whether this would be appropriate or not. Thanks for any feedback.

Hi! My math teachers told us to find math IA topics and have an outline (with the topic and some of the actual math for the IA on it) and I have some sort of idea as to what I would like to do my IA on, but I still don't understand the concept of the "IA" itself and so I don't know what math to include. Could someone please help me? These are my topic ideas (if they are useful to know): - RSA Public Key (encryption) - Harmonic Series (Music and Sequences/Series) - Modelling Diseases that are infectious Thank you!

Hey everyone So lately I have been wondering whether our maths teacher has been teaching us the right syllabus, as he is new to the IB and this part isnt in our book. We are currently studying statistics, and the last thing we were taught was Pearson's product moment correlation coefficient and the linear regression line... Is this truly part of the Maths SL syllabus? Thanks!

Hey guys, I am doing my IA about the proofs of pythagorean theorem and I am almost done with it until I figured it might be too easy for the level. My teacher told me a while ago that if the topic is too easy, I will not be able to achieve the highest grade possible. The proofs I am doing are the vector proof and a dissection proof. I had consulted with my teacher and he confirmed that it is too easy. He told me that I should find a way to make it more mathematically challenging for my level (math sl) I am out of ideas of how I could improve it, any help from you guys will be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Hey guys! So I've been trying to make up my mind on whether to switch to Math Studies from SL. Math has ALWAYS been a struggle for me. I've had Math SL since IB1 and have continued with it in IB2; however, my grade has been constantly a 2, close to failing, but I've just passed my Mocks (basically by taking advantage of method-points.) Anyway, so the student counselor said it might be a risk for me to take the Math SL final exam what with my grade being a 2. I'm just afraid that if I switch down to Studies that it might close lots of doors to unis for me. My intentions, though, have never included studying more math or going into a career in which math is essential (…

Okay, so I've been racking my brain for a possible math exploration topic, of which a proposal is due to my teacher the week after next. I've been looking at topics related to math in art, since art is my life. However (as I should've figured), a lot of these topics are on geometry, something we're not going to cover much of, if any, in my class. So I've just started considering a possible IA on vectors, and I was thinking...is it possible to do a subject on vectors and the golden ratio? Any suggestions on either or? Thanks in advance!

I found a topic I am interested in for my IA, but I don't know if I can use it. My topic is the Eight Queen's Puzzle in chess. Basically, you have to find ways to place queens on a chess board so that they will not threaten each other. The only problem is that the work is readily accessible on Wikipedia. Would that be a problem and would my topic work for my IA?

Hey guys. So, after a ton of research i thought of something that i find quite interesting, to say the least. It's basically about infinite series' and sums and the sub topics that i would discuss, if anyone is familiar with them, would include: 1) Convergence and divergence. 2) Maclaurin series 3) The Basel problem, solved by Leonhard Euler. All this really fascinates me but i would love some input to whether or not this would be an appropriate topic. Thanks in advance!

Hello! I'm a Maths SL student with a strong interest in politics, and therefore I'm trying to write my IA on that topic, however, I'm having a very hard time focusing in on an area to address. The working title right now is "Independent Votes: How Registered Independents In US Swing States Vote During National Elections", but I feel that it is both too long, and maybe too difficult to address. I've only just started the probability/statistics block of the course, so would anyone know what specific maths topic (from the SL syllabus) I could address? Anyone have any experience writing an IA in this field? Thank you in advance!

Hi Guys, hope you are doing well. I was wondering if you could help me with my IA on mathematics SL. I am doing a demostration of the existence of Pi, by geometric probabilities. But it's just basic experiments and later I am doing calculations. (buffon and Montecarlo) Is it a good topic? ps: If I have pictures of me doing the experiment, that belongs to the apendix section??

So I've started brainstorming some topics for my SL IA coming up soon, I need an intro done by September 30 and am panicking. So far I've looked at electricity and AC Current, but couldn't find any topics I can expand on. I generally like electricity and like exploring electronics. Anyone have any ideas on what I should do? I own basic electrical supplies that I can use to experiment and play with which may help in deciding what I will investigate (multimeter, wires, breadboard, arduino, etc) I don't really like statistics and absolutely hate probability, I didn't want to choose something along the lines of stats because it seems like most people only do statistics …

I'm having serious trouble thinking of anything for my IA. I'm in calc BC right now, so I'm basically limited to doing it on integration, series, or sequences, as that's all we've covered. I'm interested in applying it to video games somehow, but it's all higher level math that, as far as I can tell, is almost never used. So, any help/ideas would be appreciated.

Hello guys I'm having problems coming up with a topic on Math IA. I wanted to go with health/medicine related topics exclusively and I came across the topics of BodyMassIndex change over time, as well as a spread of Infectious disease model (I'm attaching both as well as a specimen paper - Example 11 - I found was awesome and super concise albeit quite simple and I would like my study to be somehow similar!). The BMI study essentially portrayed the distribution of percentiles for each country (in page 5) as well as the change in BMI from 199something-200something (in page 7). If someone could take a quick look and/or suggest anything I could do with relation to BMI it wou…

Hi Guys! So for my Math IA, I've chosen the topic of the Martingale Betting System; I find it extremely interesting, but am encountering some problems. Firstly, I'm not quite sure how to relate it to the SL Math Syllabus; obviously I am focusing on probability and statistics, but what specific topics? For instance, it has been suggested that I try to develop a probability tree diagram: how would I go on to do that? I have modelled the series and made a google spreadsheet, showing the effects of this betting system in the long run vs the short run. The function is also exponential; perhaps I could expand there? Thanks a lot, I'm just looking for some ideas and …
