I need help. My IA is about demographic in a certain country's crime rate and analysis of what factor which likely cause the change of the crime rate. I need help on the mathematic application on this one. The only thing that I could think of is regression line and find the most similar trends out of the factors. But isn't too easy for a Math SL IA? Anybody can help me any other mathematical application which I could use? Thanks!

Hi, I need some help finding a topic for my math SL IA. I would really want to do something related to engineering or aerospace (obviously at a doable level), but I'm also interested in topics regarding sports (particularly tennis) and music/piano. Thanks in advance.

Hi! I've finished my maths exploration, but I want to ask something before I send it to my teacher. Are the appendices included in the page count? My exploration is 10 pages long on its own, but I have 6 pages of raw data which my teacher thought would be a good idea to add to the IA so I did. But he or any other IB teacher in my school wasn't able to tell me for sure whether the appendices would count into the 6-12 page limit. I imagine that they wouldn't count, but I don't want to take the risk of losing marks if they do count. Thanks! EDIT: Another question: Should I cite formulas that I have gotten from the textbook or somehow say that they are from the textb…

IA Math SL IA: What defines plagiarism? I am panicking!

Hello all, I recently submitted my Math SL IA, and yesterday I stumbled upon an IA online that was the same topic, and was similarly structured. The two IAs had pretty much the same layout and solutions, but different work. My IA went way more in depth and had lots more information, but the IAs looked very similar so I am just scared for plagiarism. The writing is different, the work is different, but aside from that, they look very similar. I worked so long, and so hard, that I can't bear being accused of plagiarism. What are the regulations on the IAs? Will I get in trouble? Please respond fast, I am panicking and this is ruining my christmas break.

Greetings, lovely students! I'm Mitch, and I'm an IB math and physics teacher (and examiner and curriculum developer). I posted lots of resources in the past - I wanted to let you know that if you have your Math SL exam this November - gulp - that's next week - then I have something for you! I've been making an online revision course to get students ready for the exams, and you can see the entire Algebra topic is free. http://studynova.com/lecture/math-sl/algebra/ I went through every past exam and did a crazy detailed analysis of every question, how tough they are, what topics show up most often, etc etc. I used that to design a course to help you get ready for the…

Hey so im on a break between the first and second year of ib and we're suppose to think about our maths ia; the exploration. I know that the second year will be alot more intense that first year so i want to finish the first draft of the ia now. Trouble is, i dont know what i want to write it on. The things that im interested in dont really have anything to do with maths. So im just wondering if you guys have any tips on picking a good topic? Thank!!!

Hi guys, so I'm in the middle of a dilemma right now. In university, I plan on going into animation. The problem is, I don't know whether to stay in SL Math or to drop to Math Studies. I don't think I'll need Math SL, but I've heard that universities in Europe tend to not count Studies as a subject.. So should I stay with Math SL or drop to Studies?

I'm currently taking IB Math SL as a junior at my high school and will be taking IB Math HL next year. My teacher is suggesting that I sit for the AP Calculus AB Exam in May, and she said that she will be giving me work to make up for the lack of calculus in SL Math that AP Calc AB covers. Is this something that is advisable? Calculus in Math SL comes very easily to me, but I know that it's very surface-level material. If the AB exam is advisable, does anyone know the extra calculus topics I should be focusing on to get prepared? Thanks!

Hey guys I'm thinking of basing my maths IA around the Gabriel's Horn. Over the next two months, we have to come up with an idea to do for our IA and I was thinking of showing how the paradox can be explained by proving that the volume is finite and the surface area is infinite etc. I'm just not too sure whether this might be a little advanced for SL level? I'm currently on a 6-7 for maths consistently and find it quite enjoyable, however I wasn't too sure whether picking an overly advanced topic may pull me down. It's just that I remember my teacher saying that we need to clearly understand and explain all of our calculations so I want to make sure it's a doable t…

I got access to an IB Math Questionbank where I can make tests for practice and I was wondering if someone could map out the changes to the curriculum because it questions that are on there don't seem to match up to the order of our book, so it's kind of hard to make a test for chapter 12 "Basic differentiation and its applications" when the bank has Topic 6 - Calculus: 6.1 For example Chapter 12 now has 12A to 12J which includes first principles, max/min, optimization but in Topic 6 those are all in different subgroups 6.1, 6.3, 6.3 respectively. Notes: We are using the cambridge book in our class but I assume Chapter 12 is the same for every book made for first exam…

Hiya! My Maths IA is due in less than a week and I'm really struggling in terms of my topic: it's on Eratosthenes and his measurement of the Earth's circumference 200 B.C. using the distance between two cities and the sun ray's angle and I've written a few pages so far. But really, the only Mathematics involved is the circumference of a sphere formula, and I really need to put in more mathematics in it. I'm also talking about the significance of knowing the circumference and how its applied to things today such as satellites and navigation. But does anyone have any suggestions as to what further aspects I can look at in terms of the circumference of the Earth itself or …

I know I need to use the binomial theorem to explain the pattern but I am having a little difficulty showing why the square pattern exist using binomial coefficients. Hello I am writing here since my maths teacher is new, and she barley know about IB stuff. Because I am very interested in human body and anatomy, may my topic of investigation be...? Proportions and relationship in human body I would like to check various mathematical relationships in human body, e.g. golden ratio, 8 head division etc. Is it appropriate for IA purposes? Cheers

Hey, For my Math IA (sl), I wanted to do the spread of disease using SIR model based on the method suggested by a website, but I'm worried that I might end up not getting a good grade because of personal engagement criterion. Hey guys! So, I just found out my math IA grade (that my teacher gave me, yet to be moderated) and I am not very happy with it at all. I got a 12/20, but I feel like at least 4 of the points I lost were for kind of bogus reasons. For example, I lost two points on personal engagement, but I wrote my entire paper on the correlation between asthma prevalence and air pollution levels (I'm asthmatic, want to be a pulmonologist, and am an ES&S student). Other people in my class scored poorly as well (someone got a 2). I was wondering if any of you knew the likelihood of IB moderating the scores up. I've only heard horror stories about them dropping the grades, never th…

Hello everyone. So I've been revising for my exponentials and logarithms exam that's coming up next Tuesday, and I ran into an exercise which causes me some trouble. I am not in IB yet, though my teacher gives us IB SL and HL questions (not the super hard ones of course) in order to practice for the IGCSE Additional Mathematics exam. The question says: "Solve for X." (The chapter is the change of base rule so I'm assuming that's exactly what I am supposed to do here) a) log_3(x) = 4log_x(3) b) log_2(x) - 4 = 5log_x(2) c) 2log_4(x) + 3log_x(4) = 7 I got the answers sheet as well, and it says that for a x = 9 or x= 1/9, for b x= 1/2 or x=32, and for c x= 2 or 64. I …

My plan for my Maths SL Internal Assessment is to investigate the mathematics behind genetics The reason for this is that Bio is my favorite subject, and I find genetics very interesting. My "research question" is: Is it possible for parents with brown hair to have a child with blonde hair? I chose this, because then I can make it personal (I am an example of this). But my only problem is, will the maths behind it be too easy for SL??? I will look at the punnett squares and also probability. I am just not used to writing an essay about maths, so I find this rather difficult. Any help is very appreciated

IA IB MATH SL IA Topic: Biology

Hello. The title pretty much explains itself, I need a Math IA topic that is related to Biology and the rate of growth of ANYTHING. I did have previous ones, but all of them were HL, so that was out of my league. The one that really caught my eye was "How contagious is Ebola?" and you use Frank__ W function with complex numbers and differentiation, and SL students don't learn this, which is sad. I've looked at the IB Math IA topics website, and a lot of them are HL and ones that I'm not that interested in. Please help me. This is due next week. I need to get started.

So i'm looking for ideas for the IA, but i'm just so stuck. I have already thought about like 3 different topics but i found that all of them were too simple for even SL (e.g. tesselation). I know that i love biology, especially microbiology, so i would like to do an IA which has some sort of maths relating to biology.. However, the problem is....what kind of math could i even use for biology? I don't think i know any topic in biology which would contain maths that is at least SL level.. TL;DR : Any IA topic ideas which are about biology, please? (also, what kind of math would it involve). Doesn't matter if the mathematical process is extremely difficult, as long …

Good day to everyone. I was hoping someone could guide me a little with my Math IA. I planned on doing it on 'Curve Fitting', where you know you have a Curve, or a logo perhaps to be more precise, and you to try to find the mathematical expression to plot the same. For example, if you see the attached screenshot, courtesy of Wolfram|Alpha, you can see a batman logo for which an equation has been provided. How does one get these equations? If I have a particular logo in mind, how should I go about, or what method or technique can I follow to get the equation? If someone could provide me with names and if possibly any guides/links, it'd be much appreciated! T…

Hey guys! So I really need to get started on my Math IA and i have a few ideas and wanted to get your input on them. I want o pick an IA that strikes a balance between simple real world application and mathematical complexity. I narrowed it down to the following topics 1) Determining the best place to shoot a penalty in football through probability and statistics - In essence, I will be taking the statistics of penalty success in a variety of situations. What period of time is the game on, foot of the player, most sucessfull areas, where goalkeepers dive the most. I would get the statistics and create various decision trees based on the data I acquire. It would then …
